Preface I was on vacation in Korea in early 2006 when I stumbled upon a grand mountain range stretching down the entire peninsula, and yet unknown to outsiders. The Korean people called it the Baekdu Daegan (백두대간). I was intrigued to find that there is a long trail on its crest that many Koreans strove to trek, or at least aspired to. With little information and no language skills, I set out to discover it. What I found was a riveting mountainscape that exposed to me fascinating concepts of Korea’s homogeneous culture, language and identity. Along my saunter, Korean trekkers would instruct me of the symbolic and spiritual significance of the Baekdu Daegan, and that trekking it was more than just pleasure; it was for them a pilgrimage that made them more truly Korean. It quickly captured my imagination. In 2007, I returned to Korea and walked it again, this time producing a guidebook in English with fellow hiker and friend Andrew Douch. The research for the guidebook reaffirmed to me what the Koreans had told me on the trail. Writing it became a phantasmagoric journey into what I term “Korean Mountain Culture.” Its lure grew. In 2009 I returned to Korea again where I began a six-month wander of the Baekdu Daegan’s subsidiary ridges, sleeping rough; never knowing what each day would bring, I seemed in-place. Flashes of enlightenment would occasionally hit me. These uncanny moments combined with an endless maze of mountain ridges and new cultural finds convinced me to seek permission within Korea to actualize my fascination with its mountains. Koreans called this draw I felt, in-yeon (인연) - an unexplainable fate worth pursuing. Naturally, the idea to explore the Baekdu Daegan’s entire length on a peninsula snarled by division ensued. I decided that the fairest way to do this would be photographically. I took my idea to Pyongyang, where I discovered that the Paektu Dae San Julgi (백두대산줄기), as it is titled there, was also an icon of the national spirit. My new idea was warmly received. And so in 2011, I took my first steps on the unexplored mountains of the Baekdu Daegan in the northern half of the Korean Peninsula. I returned again in 2012, and completed my photographic expedition for the ‘first edition’ of this photographic study. A book that would for the first time document the entire Baekdu Daegan, North & South, featured together, a torn nation unified by mountains. As I began putting this photo-art book together I found myself emphasizing mountain photography with minimal text; I would let the viewers decide what the images meant to them. But I do have a voice. The past seven years have seen me travel quietly to many places on this peninsula. Koreans of all kinds encountered along the pathways have always reacted with great enthusiasm about my project, and have helped me accomplish it at many different levels. My social contacts were always memorable and educational. It was all very moving and humbling. My fond memories of these wide travels tell me that the Koreans were wholesomely Korean regardless of what ideals they embrace. Their language, hearts and inner mannerisms are absolutely identical -- facts that we sometimes let outside influences coerce us into thinking aren’t so. Although the Baekdu Daegan is on a divided peninsula, its backbone is geographically intact as one mountain-system. As an outsider who can pass across the barriers between the two, then, this book is the fruit of my desire to share the oneness of the Baekdu Daegan with the Korean people and everyone else who currently cannot experience it. 2006년 초 나는 휴가로 한국에 왔다가 우연히 한반도 전체에 뻗어있는 거대한 산줄기를 알게 되었습니다. 한국 사람들이 백두대간(白頭大幹)이라고 부르는 이 산맥이 그때에는 외부인에게 별로 알려지지 않았습니다. 나는 그곳에 긴 등산로가 있는 것을 알게 되어 흥미를 느꼈습니다. 많은 한국인이 그곳을 힘들여 트레킹하고 있거나 그렇지 못하더라도 언젠가 등산하기를 열망하고 있었습니다. 나는 정보도 없고 한국말도 몰랐지만 백두대간이 어떤 곳인지 알아보기 위해 나섰습니다. 내가 발견한 것은 황홀한 산 경치였습니다. 그런데 그것은 한국의 동질적인 문화, 언어 그리고 정체성의 매혹적인 개념들을 나에게 보여주었습니다. 내가 산행하는 동안 한국 등산객들이 백두대간의 상징적 및 정신적 중요성을 알려주었습니다. 그리고 그곳에서 걷는 것을 단순한 즐거 움 이상의 것으로, 그들을 더 진정으로 한국인이 되게 하는 순례와 같은 것이라는 것도 알게 되었습니다. 곧 백두대간은 나의 마 음을 사로잡았습니다. 2007년 나는 또 한국을 방문하여 백두대간을 다시 종주했습니다. 그리고 이번에는 친구이자 동료 하이커인 앤드류 더우츠 (Andrew Douch)와 더불어 영문판 백두대간 안내서를 만들었습니다. 이 안내서를 위해 조사해보았더니 백두대간 산길에서 한국인 들이 말했던 내용이 다시 확인되었습니다. 안내서를 집필하다보니까 “한국 산문화”라는 변화무쌍한 세계에 내가 빠져들어 갔습 니다. 백두대간의 매력이 자랐습니다. 다시 나는 2009년 한국에 와서 6개월 동안 백두대간의 여러 지맥들을 등산했습니다. 노천에서 자면서, 매일 매일 새로운 것을 경 험했는데, 내가 한국의 산에 잘 어울리는 듯싶었습니다. 가끔 깨달음 같은 순수한 정신의 고양을 느꼈습니다. 끝없는 산 능선들의 미로를 헤매고 새로운 문화적 사실을 발견하면서 이런 초자연적인 것에 대해 순간순간 느꼈는데, 그것으로 인해 내가 한국 산들 의 매혹을 실현하기로 작정했습니다. 한국 사람들은 이런 끌림을 인연이라고 부릅니다. 그것은 설명할 수 없는 운명인데, 추구할 가치가 있다고 생각했습니다. 자연스러운 일이지만, 한반도 전체의 백두대간을 탐색해보고 싶은 생각이 들게 되었습니다. 나는 백두대간 전체를 등산하는 가장 적당한 방법이 사진을 촬영하는 것이라고 결론 내렸습니다. 내가 북한측에 내 구상을 타진했습니다. 북한에서는 백두대간을 “백 두대산줄기”라고 부르고 있는데, 역시 그곳에서도 그것은 국민정신의 상징이었습니다. 북한측은 내 제안을 쾌히 수락했습니다. 그래서 2011년 한반도의 북쪽에 있는 백두대간의 미답의 산들을 내가 처음으로 등산하게 되었습니다. 나는 2012년 다시 북한에 가서 이 사진집을 위한 촬영 원정을 마무리 지었습니다. 이 책은 남북한 양측 백두대간의 산들을 처음으로 함께 기록한 것인데, 국가는 분단되어도 산들에 의해 연결되고 있음을 보여주고 있습니다. 그러나 이 책은 남북한 산들의 사진집 “초판”에 불과합니 다. 나는 이 사진집을 편집함에 있어, 설명문을 최소로 하고 산 사진을 강조하려고 했습니다. 독자가 사진의 영상을 보고 의미를 직 접 느끼기를 기대합니다. 그러나 내가 말하고 싶은 것이 꼭 있습니다. 지난 7년 동안 내가 한반도의 여러 곳들을 조용히 여행했 는데, 길에서 만난 여러 분야의 한국인들이 늘 나의 일을 크게 성원해주었고, 많은 어려운 경우에 도와주어 이 일을 완수할 수 있게 했습니다. 나의 한국인들과의 사귐은 늘 기억에 남을 만한 것이었으며 교육적이었습니다. 그것들은 모두 아주 감동적이었고 나를 겸허하게 만들었습니다. 내가 한국의 여러 곳을 여행하여 얻은 기억들 중에서 내 마음에 드는 것은, 한국인들은 어떤 이상 을 품고 있든 간에 근본적으로 한국인이라는 사실입니다. 한국인들의 언어, 심성, 그리고 심리적 습성 등은 완전히 동일하다고 봅 니다. 그런데 이 사실들은 때때로 외부의 영향으로 인해 우리가 그렇지 않다고 생각하게 만듭니다. 백두대간은 분단된 반도에 걸 쳐있지만, 그것의 중추는 지리적으로 하나의 산계로서 손상되지 않은 채 남아있습니다. 나는 국외자로서 양측 사이의 장벽을 통 과할 수 있었는데, 이 책은 백두대간이 하나임을 한국인들과 그리고 현재 양쪽의 백두대간을 경험할 수 없는 사람들과 함께 공유 하고 싶은 나의 여망의 결실이라고 봅니다. 로저 셰퍼드(Roger Shepherd) 속리산 법주 계곡에서 2013년 6월
The Identity of the Baekdu Daegan 백두대간 The literal translation of “Baekdu Daegan” is White Head Great Ridge. Its name originates from the very mountain that the Great Ridge emanates from, Paektu-san (san, 산; mountain), 2750m at its summit. Located on the border with China, it is Korea’s highest and most sacred mountain, where a volcanic plateau reaches up to windswept peaks that embrace a heavenly caldera filled with sapphire-blue water. It is an enchanting and powerful place. Its summit remains snow-capped almost the entire year, hence the name White Head. Although Korean territories once stretched into Manchuria, two mighty rivers that stretch to the west and east of Paektu-san, spilling respectively into the Yellow Sea and East Sea, now form the modern-day boundary with China. As a result, the only land-bridge that connects the spirit of the Korean peninsula to the Asian continent is that mighty massif. It is from this isolated land-node that Korea’s genealogy of mountains begins, scattering a tapestry of endless mountains that consumes seventy-five percent of the peninsula’s landscape. From Paektu-san the Baekdu Daegan stretches and twists continuously for some 1680km south towards the sacred peak of Cheonwang-bong (bong, 봉; peak), 1915m. Along its course, the ridgeline is never cut by water, making it the watershed of the entire peninsula. Korea’s jutting landscape has always had an animistic influence on its people. Korea’s earliest native traditions were themed around respect for mountains. Their founding leader, King Dan-gun (단군; b.2333 BCE), was said to have achieved the immortal status of Sanshin (산신; Mountain spirit) instead of his death. Local people have always paid frequent respect to their village’s local Sanshin. To protect and respect their mountain’s spirit meant to take care of the land’s bio-ecology – providing better water and air quality for their village crops and themselves. Natural energies were appreciated for their life-giving vitalities. In the greater holistic realm, Paektu-san is seen as the birthplace of all this natural energy, making it the foundation of all civilized Korean life on the peninsula. It transmits this vitality called ji-gi (지기; Earth-energy) throughout the peninsula, via the Baekdu Daegan, according to traditional Pungsu-jiri (Geomancy; feng-shui; 풍수지리) theories. From the Baekdu Daegan twelve subsidiary ridges called Jeongmaek (정맥) disperse this energy further, channeling the passage of Korea’s greatest rivers to her seas at the same time. This combination of energy, land and water is transmitted via the lesser ridgelines even deeper into the very heart of Korean civilization and culture. This anthropomorphic exercise creates an image of the Baekdu Daegan as the spine of the nation, with a central nervous system of natural energy running through it. Its greater and lesser ridges are like the skeletal structure of a human body, providing rigidity and posture. Korea’s waterways and streams are therefore the arterial networks that provide a pulse to the people. The clean air generated from this overall mountain-body is life’s own breath. This is how the Korean people are intrinsically related to their mountains. It is part of their homogeneous identity, mountain-born vitality ingrained into their very DNA. Together they are a family that populates this peninsula -- to damage the Baekdu Daegan, is to damage the life of the Korean people. They are one.
백두대간의 정체성 백두대간은 백두산(2,750m)에서 시작한 큰 산맥을 일컫는 명칭입니다. 백두산은 중국과의 국경에 자리 잡고 있으며, 한국에서 가 장 높은 산으로 가장 신성시 여기는 산입니다. 정상부에는 화산 분화구로 만들어진 사파이어 청색의 물이 담겨진 큰 호수가 있고 그 주위에 첨봉들이 둘러싸고 있습니다. 그리고 그 아래에 화산으로 형성된 고원이 펼쳐져있습니다. 백두산은 매혹적인 산이며, 강한 기(氣)가 서려있는 곳입니다. 정상 부근은 거의 일 년 내내 눈에 덮여있어 이름이 백두(흰 머리)가 되었습니다. 옛날에는 한 국의 영토가 만주까지 뻗은 적도 있었는데, 백두산에서 발원하는 두 강인 압록강이 서쪽으로 흘러 황해로 들어가고 두만강은 동 쪽으로 나아가 동해에 이르고 있습니다. 이 두 강이 현재 중국과의 국경이 되고 있습니다. 결과로 한반도의 정신이 아시아 대륙 과 육지로 연결되는 곳은 바로 이 거대한 대산괴인 백두산입니다. 한국 산들의 계보가 시작되는 곳이 바로 이 백두산입니다. 한반도는 75%가 산악 지대로 되어있는데, 그들 수많은 산들의 줄기가 백두산에서 퍼져 내려가고 있습니다. 백두산에서 뻗기 시작한 백두대간은 남쪽으로 약 1,680km 내려가 지리산의 성스러운 주봉인 천왕봉(1,915m)에 이릅니다. 백두대간은 이렇게 뻗어오는 동안 한번도 물에 의해 차단되지 않으며 오히려 한반도 전체의 분수령이 되고 있습니다. 한반도의 풍광은 예전부터 주민들에게 애니미즘적인 영향을 주었습니다. 한국의 초기 토착적인 전설은 산에 대한 숭배와 관련되 어있습니다. 최초로 나라를 세운 단군왕검(서기전 2,333년 출생)은 죽지 않고 산신이 되어 불사의 존재가 되었다고 합니다. 예전에 주민들은 지역의 산신에게 자주 경의를 나타냈습니다. 산신을 보호하고 산신을 숭배하는 것은 땅의 생물생태를 소중히 여기는 것 과 상통했습니다. 즉 주민 자신과 마을의 농작물을 위해 더 좋은 물과 공기가 마련되기를 기원하는 것이었습니다. 삶을 마련해주 는 생명력을 위해 자연 에너지의 중요한 역할을 이해했던 것입니다. 더 큰 전체관적 관점에서 보면, 백두산이 이런 모든 자연 에너지의 발원처인데, 이 자연 에너지가 한반도에서의 한국인의 문명된 삶의 기반이 된다는 것입니다. 전통적인 풍수설에 따르면, 지기(地氣)가 백두대간을 통해 한반도 전체에 전파되고 있습니다. 그리 고 백두대간에서 가지쳐나간 12개의 부차적인 산맥인 정맥(正脈)들을 통해 이 에너지가 더 퍼져나가고, 또한 바다로 나가는 큰 강 들을 따라 전해지고 있다는 것입니다. 땅 그리고 물과 결합된 이 에너지가 더 작은 산 능선들을 통해 한국의 문명과 문화의 핵심 으로 깊숙이 전파되고 있습니다. 이런 의인론적 관점에서 보면, 백두대간은 나라의 등뼈가 되어 자연 에너지의 중추신경이 이를 통해 전해집니다. 백두대간의 크고 작은 산맥들은 인체의 골격처럼 형체와 자세를 마련해주고 있습니다. 그래서 한국의 강과 내 들은 사람들에게 맥박을 제공하는 대동맥의 망이 됩니다. 이 전체 산에서 만들어지는 맑은 공기는 생명 자체의 숨인 것입니다. 이것이 한국인이 내재적으로 산들과 관계된 모습입니다. 이것이 한국인의 동질적 정체성의 한 부분입니다. 산에서 생긴 생명력이 그들의 유전자에 깊이 뿌리박고 있습니다. 한국인들은 함께 한반도에서 살고 있는 한 가족입니다. 백두대간을 해치는 것은 한국 인의 생명을 해치는 것입니다. 그들은 하나입니다.

Photography & Captions The photography in this book has either been taken directly from the Baekdu Daegan ridge or from nearby peaks that are a part of its topography, or that offer great views of it. In the past the Baekdu Daegan acted as a cultural frontier between kingdoms. These days it is a natural border between provinces. Where the Baekdu Daegan is shared between provinces the caption for that photo does not necessarily claim that the mountain belongs to that province, but may instead offer an idea of which province I used to get to the mountain, or which provincial direction that photo faces.
사진 설명 이 책의 사진들은 직접 백두대간의 능선 위에서 찍거나 근처의 고봉 또는 좋은 조망을 보이는 곳에서 촬영한 것입니다. 과거에 백두대간은 왕국들의 문화적 전선 역할을 했습니다. 오늘날에는 이것이 행정구역을 나누는 자연적인 경계가 되고 있습니다. 백두대간이 여러 행정구역에 속하는 경우 백두대간이 반드시 사진 설명에 적힌 행정 구역에만 속하는 것을 의미하지는 않습니다. 대신 그것은 저자가 흔히 산행할 때 갔던 곳이거나 사진이 담고 있는 광경의 행정구역입니다.
