If you are organising a holiday for a group of friends, a walking club or charity event we can arrange a bespoke itinerary tailored perfectly to your requirements.

This is a very popular holiday and the feedback we’ve had from guests on the scenery, route directions and quality of the hotels has been great.

For groups of 6 or more we can offer group discounts, varying holiday lengths and walks as strenuous or as relaxed as you would like.

Guided holidays Our guided walking holidays make sure you get the most out of your stay in the Pyrenees. Our team of qualified guides have an intimate knowledge of the area. We can take you straight to the most beautiful spots, many of which are off the beaten track and often we'll have the mountains to ourselves.

Small group holidays Our policy of only taking small groups means you’ll never be in a long line of walkers. It also gives us the flexibility to alter the itinerary according to the groups needs and is key to us giving you a fantastic week of walking.

Dual Level Walking Our dual level holidays are very popular. On these we offer two guided walks each day - a shorter option and a longer harder day in the mountains. We talk through the walks for the following day in the evening and each morning you can decide which walk you’d like to join. Dual level holidays are perfect if you’re not sure which level would suit you best, if you’d like to do a couple of longer days but don’t want to commit to a whole week of hard hikes or for couples or friends that walk at differing levels.

We take care of everything

Our Valle de Tena Explorer (page 10) and Discover Ordesa (page 20) holidays offer dual level walking.

With our guided walking holidays we look after everything, meaning that you can just relax and enjoy the walking, scenery and your holiday.

Walking grades

The day starts with a choice of cooked or continental breakfast and we’ll usually take a short drive to the trailhead for the day’s hiking. A generous picnic lunch (with homemade cake!) is provided which we eat while out in the hills. After each walk we have a briefing (usually over a cold beer) where we discuss the following day. Transfers are provided to and from Zaragoza airport or train station on Sunday evenings either to meet the Ryan Air flight from Stansted or the train from Barcelona or Madrid.

4

We offer four grades of walking holidays with itineraries to suit all levels of walkers. Our grade 1 and 2 walks are at a relaxed pace with plenty of time to take in the scenery and stop to look at the wild flowers and birds. Grade 3 and 4 holidays venture into the higher mountains with rougher, rocky paths and some steep sections.

“The knowledge that Phil has about the history and culture of Spain, the Pyrenees and the fauna and flora make the walks much more than just a trip into the mountains” John

Grade 1: Relaxed

Grade 3: Strenuous

Walks: 5-7 hours Ascent: 300-500 metres Paths: Good paths, not steep

Walks: 7-10 hours Ascent: 700-1000 metres Paths: Rocky, steeper paths

Walks are at a relaxed pace (we’re big fans of two lunch breaks!). We’ll pass through areas with superb flora. If you’re a fairly fit and active person these walks should be fine for you.

For those that like long days in the high mountains. Routes are steep in places with rocky rough paths. Some routes have sections of easy scrambling. Good level of fitness required.

Grade 2: Moderate

Grade 4: Challenging

Walks: 6-8 hours Ascent: 450-750 metres Paths: Good paths with some steeper sections

Walks: 7-10 hours Ascent: 700-1500 metres Paths: Steep!

Walks are still at a relaxed pace and on good paths but are a bit longer taking in some summits and with occasional steeper sections.

Tough steep hikes on high mountain paths often spending nights in Refugios. Previous hiking experience and a good level of fitness essential.

Self guided holidays Our self guided walking holidays are designed to help you enjoy the Pyrenees on your own but still get straight to the best hikes in the area. We’ve a choice of villages in either the Ordesa National Park or the Valle de Tena. We take the hard work out of organising your holiday by arranging accommodation, providing detailed route cards, maps, weather forecasts and picnic lunches. Several times during the week we visit the hotel to offer advice and talk through your options for the following day.

Choice of hotels

Pyrenees information pack

Arrive on any day

We’ve two villages in the Valle de Tena for you to choose from - Hotel Almud in Sallent de Gállego or the 4* Hotel Tierra de Biescas in Biescas. For the Ordesa National Park choose between the 4* Hotel Ordesa superbly placed at the entrance of the valley or the rural Casa Capella in the remote village of Bestue. All are excellent bases for walkers with plenty of hikes in easy reach of each hotel.

Before your holiday we'll send you a full planning pack. This contains the most accurate hiking map of the area, a hiking guide and a Pyrenees guide full of information about the flora, fauna, geology and history of the area.

Our self guided holidays are totally flexible and you can arrive and depart on any day you wish, staying as long as you like.

Choose between full board with picnic lunches provided or bed and breakfast. See page 32 for more details of the hotels.

Self Catering Apartments In Biescas we offer one and two bedroom self catering apartments in the lovely Rincon de Andrea. Each is well furnished and equipped with microwave, hob, washing machine, fridge, TV and DVD player.

The hiking guide contains summaries for over 200km of the best hikes in the area, a recommended kit list and everything you need to know about your holiday.

Easy to follow route cards On arrival you’ll receive a pack of easy to follow route cards for each trail. These give detailed directions along with the length of walk, height gain and what you’ll see on the way. We’ve a huge choice of routes ranging from easy rambles through to long days in the higher mountains so there’s something for everyone.

Two centre holidays In Ordesa we offer a two centre holiday staying in both Torla and Bestue. From Torla you can walk in the Ordesa Canyon and the western side of the park while Bestue gives you access to some excellent hiking in the east of the park - the walking is markedly different in both locations. The remote village of Bestue is a fantastic place to get away from it all and Casa Capella is a beautiful and special place to stay.

“We have really enjoyed our self guided holiday - enough independence with the knowledge we had informed experienced back up if needed. Great walks in a beautiful area” Karen and Annette

You’ll need a car to make the most of the area (apart from our Village to Village holiday). The roads are good and we provide driving directions. Zaragoza is the closest airport to hire a car from and Barcelona, Bilbao or Toulouse are all also in easy driving distance. For more information on getting to us see page 30 or give us a call.

Which base will be best? The Valle de Tena and Ordesa National Park both offer fantastic walking but the terrain varies in the two areas. The Ordesa National Park is stunning with kilometre deep canyons and cliffs. There are walks of all levels in the park from very gentle through to strenuous hikes including some vertiginous cliff hugging paths. However the peaks in the park are not accessible to day hikers as they’re too high. If you like reaching peaks then the Valle de Tena would suit you best. There are some superb summits to be reached here - some easy and some long days involving scrambling. The Valle de Tena also has excellent meadows, lakes and access to cultural walks passing medieval villages and monasteries for those that prefer gentler walks.

5

Valle de Tena From it’s alpine meadows to it’s rocky three thousand metre peaks the Valle de Tena really does have walks to suit everyone. Deep wooded valleys with streams and waterfalls give way to bare rocky high mountains scenery as you climb towards the summits. The valley stretches twenty kilometres from the cliffs of the Sierra de Partacua and Tendeñera north to the French border and is flanked by numerous peaks on each side. Several deep side valleys mean you’ll discover new vistas with each corner you turn. Mountain villages with stone houses and winding streets are nestled amongst the mountains and our Village to Village self guided holiday lets you stay in some lovely spots.

Alpine meadows Wide flower-filled meadows lye under impressive cliffs and are perfect for walkers who prefer gentler days without forsaking wonderful scenery and views. Great walks follow bubbling mountain streams with waterfalls cascading down the sides of the valleys, others lead to mountain lakes or through wonderful beech and silver fir woods.

Challenging peaks One of the reasons we love the Valle de Tena is the huge choice of peaks it offers to day hikers. There are dozens of peaks between two and three thousand metres all with fantastic views. These hikes range from fairly gentle 5 or 6 hour round trips to some really big ascents up three thousand metre peaks and into wild high mountain scenery. The pointy summit of Pico Anayet is one of our favourites. It looks impossible when you first see it but an ingenious path - helped by a chain across one section - guides you quickly to the top for birds eye views across the valley.

Biescas - lively village At the southern end of the Valle de Tena, Biescas is perfectly positioned to reach several excellent and diverse walking areas including the Valle de Tena and the Ordesa Valley. Biescas makes a great base if you’d like to do a mix of walking during your week - a few higher peaks up the valley, some gentler walks between semiabandoned villages with Romanesque churches and a day over in the Ordesa Valley. It’s also an excellent option early or late in the season as there are excellent hikes south of Biescas which stay dry if the weather’s not so great further up the valley. At the heart of the village is the plaza - the centre of every Spanish village. Surrounding the plaza are several bars, cafes and restaurants. There are a few shops and all of the amenities you’ll need.

Sallent de Gállego Scenic mountain village Nestled under the high peak of Foratata, Sallent de Gállego is everything you imagine a mountain village to be. As you wander through it’s maze of narrow streets you get constant views of the mountains that surround you. With it’s twelfth century church and old stone houses Sallent de Gállego is very picturesque. There are several excellent walks that leave straight from the hotel. Although there are several good shorter walks in the area, Sallent de Gállego comes into it’s own for walkers who want to summit some of the higher peaks in the valley with lots of superb challenging routes on it’s doorstep.

7

Lakes & Valleys - 7 night guided walking holiday - Grade 1 - relaxed walking - Superb mountain scenery - 4* hotel with pool and sauna The Pyrenees are full of beautiful mountain lakes and green valleys. Our Lakes & Valleys holidays are ideal for those that prefer more relaxed days in the mountains. You’ll discover stunning secluded spots and meadows full of flowers as we show you some of the hidden treasures of the Pyrenees.

Relaxed walking This is a week of relaxed walks with the emphasis on finding quiet beautiful spots with breathtaking scenery, rather than scaling high peaks. Therefore the walks will not be overly strenuous and suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. Our qualified guides are knowledgeable about the local area and in particular the flora and birdlife you’ll see while out in the mountains. The holiday is ideal for nature lovers with walks passing through meadows full of orchids, gentians and alpine flora - particularly in early summer. A number of the walks will pass through sites of historic interest such as the 10th century monastery of San Juan de la Peña. On the rest day we’ll visit Jaca, the ancient capital of Aragon, for a guided tour and an evening of tapas and vino.

Lady Slippers Orchid

4* Hotel Tierra de Biescas

The magnificent Lady Slippers Orchid is one of Europe’s rarest orchids and we’re lucky enough to have a flowering group in the Valle de Tena.

Holidays are based at the excellent four star Hotel Tierra de Biescas. The hotel has excellent facilities with a sauna, indoor pool and an outdoor pool set in lovely gardens which are great to relax in after a days walking.

The orchid’s huge flowers act as traps for insects who enter to feed on nectar and then get covered in pollen while trying to escape the slippery sides. The orchids usually flower in early June and we’ll take a trip to see the orchids on our Lakes & Valleys holidays on the 26 May - 2 June and 2-9 June and the Valle de Tena Explorer on June 9-16.

8

The lively village of Biescas makes an excellent base from which to explore the surrounding area. Read more about the hotel on page 24. The hotel serves an excellent buffet breakfast with cooked and continental options. Three course evening meals are taken at the hotel restaurant each evening.

"Blue skies, bright sun, a bubbling brook, soaring cliff faces, snow topped mountains and the chime of cowbells; all this in the first hour of our week of walking." Iain and Mary-Anne

Vegetables and salads are taken straight from his vegetable garden next door - you can’t get much fresher than that!

The Ordesa National Park Established in 1918 the Parque Nacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido is Spain’s first national park and an undisputed highlight of the Pyrenees with some of the most magnificent scenery in Europe Kilometre deep canyons are carved into the limestone and lye beneath snowcapped peaks. At the centre of the park lies Monte Perdido - the third highest summit in the Pyrenees. Another dozen three thousand metre summits are strung along the French border along with the famous pass of Breche de Roland. In 1997 the park was made a UNESCO world heritage site for it’s incredible diversity of flora and fauna. If you’re a nature lover you’ll love the park which is famous for it’s birds of prey and one of the few remaining homes of the lammergeier one of the largest vultures in Europe. Our nature guide will help you identify what you’re seeing and let you know what to keep an eye out for.

Dramatic Canyon Walking The four deep canyons of the park offer dramatic walking and each canyon has trails of all lengths and difficulties. You can walk in the beautiful beech woods admiring the cliffs above or climb up to the dramatic ‘faja’ paths - narrow ledges that wind around the cliff faces. We offer two walking bases from which to explore the Park - Torla and Escuain. The Ordesa Valley and the western side of the park are most easily reached from Torla. Bestue is on the eastern side of the park and there is excellent walking there above the Añisclo Canyon and the Garganta de Escuain. For self guided walkers a two centre week staying in both Torla and Bestue is an excellent option and gives you access to a fantastic range of walking.

Torla - gateway to Ordesa

Bestue - tranquil & remote

Known as the gateway to Ordesa, Torla makes an ideal base to explore the western side of the National Park in particularly the walking in the magnificent Ordesa Valley.

A wonderful tiny village perched high on the mountainside. With just 9 year round inhabitants Bestue is quiet and remote and the perfect place to get away from it all.

The old town’s winding streets and stone buildings have the cliffs of Ordesa as a backdrop, Torla is a lively village in summer with a good choice of bars, restaurants, shops and a small supermarket. Hotel Ordesa is in a lovely, quiet location 20 minutes walk from the village centre.

From Bestue you get fantastic access to the eastern side of the park and as the village is so high you get easy access to the meadows above the Añisclo Canyon for spectacular views into it’s depths. The lammergeier feeding station in the Garganta de Escuain is also easily reached from Bestue.

Discover Ordesa - 7 night guided walking holiday

Choice of 2 walks each day

- Choice of two walks each day

There will be a choice of two guided walks each day and you can decide each morning which walk you’d like to join.

- Dual level: grade 1 & grade 3 - 4* hotel with pool The spectacular Ordesa National Park is a highlight of the Pyrenees and a fantastic walking location. Choose from two guided walks each day - a lower level and a higher level option. A perfect holiday if you fancy doing a couple of longer days but don’t want to commit to a whole week of long hikes or for couples where one partner likes to walk farther than the other.

One option will be a grade 1 or 2 walk at a relaxed pace with plenty of time to soak up the views. These walks will be on good well graded paths and visit the alpine meadows and valleys of the park. Walks will be between five to seven hours with three or four hundred metres of ascent. The second option will be a grade 3 or 4 hike on one of the spectacular high level paths the park is famous for. A good head for heights will be needed for some routes and there will be steep sections on most days. These hikes will be six to nine hours with six hundred to a thousand metres of ascent so a good level of fitness is required.

The last Ibex Sadly something you won’t see is the Pyrenean Ibex. These magnificent member of the goat family had huge curved horns and were once found throughout the Pyrenees. By the early 1900’s over hunting (there horns were prized by hunters) had reduced the population to just one herd in the Ordesa National Park. By 1990 only ten individuals remained and tragically during a storm in 1998 the last known female was killed by a falling tree in the area around the Faja de Pelay. The species became extinct shortly after.

20

Hotel Ordesa Accommodation is at the 4* Hotel Ordesa. Fantastically situated with views of the Ordesa valley the hotel has excellent facilities including an outdoor pool, bar, restaurant, lounge and spa with steam room and jacuzzi. Three course evening meals are served in the restaurant each evening (apart from the rest day when we’ll visit the nearby town of Ainsa). The pretty village of Torla has a range of shops, bars and all of the amenities you’ll need and is less than 15 minutes walk away.

“Walking with Hike Pyrenees is a special experience - Phil and Hannah are knowledgeable, expert and friendly guides, Anna’s pack lunches are the stuff of legend and the scenery is stunning.” Sheena

Refugio Week - 7 night guided walking holiday - Grade 4: Challenging hiking - Climb Monte Perdido (3355m) - 4 nights in mountain huts Staying in a mountain hut or ‘refugio’ allows you to reach the wildest areas of the Pyrenees. Following the GR11 you’ll explore trails out of the reach of day hikers and make the classic ascent of Monte Perdido. Staying at three of the best situated refugios in the Pyrenees, we’ll explore both the Valle de Tena and Ordesa National Park.

Challenging hiking This is a week of demanding hiking with long days and steep ascents. A good level of fitness and some hiking experience is essential. Trails will vary with a mixture of good paths interspersed with scree and boulderfields. There are several exposed sections. The highlight of the trek is an ascent of the ‘lost mountain’ - Monte Perdido. At 3355m this is the third highest peak in the Pyrenees. The ascents are not technical and do not require technical experience. Crampons may be required (particularly in June) but you will be instructed on all the necessary techniques during the holiday. We’ll send you a detailed kit list before arrival and can provide crampons and ice axes if required.

Ramond & Monte Perdido

Accommodation

Ramond de Carbonnieres made Monte Perdido famous when he exclaimed: “When you've seen the the most beautiful of the granite mountains (Mont Blanc), You must see the most beautiful limestone mountain: Monte Perdido”

For the hike in the Valley de Tena we will stay at Refugio Respomuso & Refugio Bachimaña. In the Ordesa National Park, Refugio Goriz will be our base. Both serve three course evening meals as well as snacks and drinks. We’ll sleep in large mixed dorms. The facilities at Goriz are fairly basic but Respomuso and Bachimaña are more modern with hot showers.

Ramond is widely credited with the first ascent of the summit in 1802 but in fact the two guides he sent ahead to scout the route reached the peak four days earlier. They in turn were shown the way by a shepherd from the Valle de Pineta who is thought to have known the route from a previous ascent.

22

When not in the mountains we stay at Hotel Almud with a final night of luxury in the 4* Hotel Tierra de Biescas where it’s sauna and pool are the perfect way to end a great weeks hiking.

"The whole experience was a real adventure" Nick "What a fabulous holiday with amazing hikes, incredible scenery and wonderful knowledgeable guides. Thank you for a great time!" Karen

When Roland reached the impassable cliffs he drew his sword and cleaved a huge cleft in the cliffs through which he escaped into France.

We’ve route cards for all of the best walks in the valley. There’s a huge choice of walks of all distances ranging from gentle walks in alpine meadows to long days in the high mountains. The Posets-Maladeta Park The Posets-Maladeta Parque Natural takes it’s name from the two highest massifs in the Pyrenees and contains the largest concentration of three thousand metre peaks anywhere in the Pyrenees. Formed in 1994 the park has stunning scenery with meadows, beech and pine woods in the valleys and rocky summits with glaciers and exposed ridges. The park is split in by the Valle de Benasque with the Posets to the west and Maladeta to the east. The northern frontier of the park is a long ridge running along the French border. Our Tour of Posets holiday explores the impressive massif of Posets and we do a complete circuit of the summit during the week. Porous limestone areas form many ‘foraus’ where streams disappear into large caves and holes and travel underground. The parks granite zones have beautiful mountain lakes which lie under the rocky peaks.

3

With the Pyrenees’ two highest peaks - Aneto and Posets - contained in the park it’s no surprise that there’s some fantastic hiking in the area. We love the variety of being able to walk in a green valley in the morning and by lunchtime be scaling a three thousand metre summit. Rocky ridges are a feature of the park and there are several great airy scrambles to summits - the most famous being the ‘steps of Mohammed’ the final obstacle in reaching the summit of Aneto. It’s a great area for hut to hut hiking with well placed huts giving you access to remote valleys, dozens of peaks and allow you to really get away from it all.

Benasque The village of Benasque lies in right on the borders of the park and is the ideal place to explore the park from. It’s attractive streets all have mountain views as there backdrop and there’s a pretty plaza and thirteenth century church. A lively, fairly large village Benasque has a good collection of outdoor shops, cafe’s and bars.

Hiking in the park

4

The village has a real outdoor feel and has long been known as the place for mountaineers in the Pyrenees with the Spanish mountain school based in the village.

“Amazing week with Hike Pyrenees! The mountains, the guides and the spirit of our group were just lovely. Very well organised trip.” Sarah

Tour of Posets - Hut to hut walking holiday - Grade 4: Challenging hiking - Full circuit of the Posets massif - 5 nights in mountain huts A 6 day circuit of the Posets massif including an ascent of the Pyrenees second highest peak itself. An absolutely stunning week of hiking with really varied scenery from wooded valleys to bare rocky peaks and a chance to reach five 3000m summits.

High mountain scenery The scenery is superb throughout the week with a lovely mix of green wooded valleys and bare, rocky summits with panoramic views for miles around. If you like high mountain scenery and long days in the hills this is the holiday for you.

Challenging hiking This is a demanding weeks hiking with some long days and a good level of fitness is required. There are several steep climbs and you should be capable of ascents of over one thousand metres. Several of the summits are side trips so there is the option to shorten two of the days by waiting while the rest of the group do the summit or to take a rest day in the middle of the week. Paths are generally good but on the side trips there will be some exposed sections and scrambling and sure-footedness is required. Each day we’ll walk between six to ten hours.

Refugio Biados Lying in idyllic meadows in ancient summer pastures dotted with old shepherds huts, Refugio Biados is our favourite hut in the Pyrenees. Why do we like it so much? Hot showers, beds not bunks, excellent food and a superb wine list are a good start. And we’re sure that when you’re relaxing in the surrounding meadows, soaking in the magnificent views of Posets glowing red in the setting sun that you’ll agree with us that time in the mountains doesn’t get much better than this.

Ferries from the UK

Driving through France

Brittany Ferries have three routes from the UK to Spain: Portsmouth-Bilbao, Portsmouth-Santander and Plymouth-Santander. The ferries are a great way to travel and have private cabins, restaurants, bars and viewing decks. All of the routes allow you to take your own car and crossings take around 24 hours.

Driving through France is a great way of coming in your own car. Allow about 15 hours driving from the northern ports. Taking the ferry from the UK one way and then meandering back through France over a few days is an excellent option.

The drive to Hike Pyrenees from Bilbao takes four hours, from Santander four and a half hours. Visit www.brittany-ferries.co.uk for timetables and prices.
