“To create architecture is to put in order. Put what in order? Function and objects. –Le Corbusier This trip was a total whirlwind for me. We traveled every day and experienced so many new places that I was worried that I would not be able to take in everything. I am sure there is a lot that I missed, but the knowledge I gained from this trip is invaluable. It was only once I returned to the States that I realized just how much I had learned. When I was in Europe, I was so immersed in everything around me that it was difficult to see the differences that became so apparent when I returned to Kansas. I can now see the progression that modern buildings have made. I understand how they rose from their precedents, building on stable ideas and incorporating radical theories. Modernism did not just rise out of nothing; it was completely built on the past and a desire to make buildings that functioned effectively. After seeing this progression of process first hand, my design process has been strengthened. I am better able to visualize the different stages of design that I need to work through in order to produce a cohesive design scheme. I am sure that I will continue to discover lessons that I learned during my time in France and apply them to my current designs. My only regret from the trip is that it did not last longer. I learned so much during my time in France, both educationally and culturally. I will always look back on this summer as one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. I am excited to continue my work with my new understanding of the world and truly cannot wait to get back to Europe to learn more.
