A blind, Restless Night

By Genevieve Hart

After another hot, tiring mining experience, the day had finally come to an end. The clear, blue sky had almost turned black, only a small amount of light still left.

I was ready to go to bed for a good nights rest (for once) , but the others insisted on going on an ‘’evening stroll’’. I would have refused to come, if it wasn’t for the time of night and that I wouldn’t have dared to go back to the camp alone. I made my brother promise that this walk would only be a short one, but if you read on, you will find it was indeed very long.

About 5 minutes into the walk, the sky turned black. It was then that I demanded we go back, and the rest of our panning team agreed. After 10 minutes of walking the other way, my brother feeling our way with a stick, not getting us any closer to camp, it came to my attention that we were lost. I gave a yell for help, and remarkably, we

Got a reply! Imediatley we ran towards the voices which were now much louder.’’ I’m coming’’ I shouted, as I ran towards the calls. But it was too late when I got close enough to hear what the men were saying, because I slipped and fell into a hole that had been filled with water. My brother and the rest of the miners claim that the men were calling stop, because they knew that the holes were there. That hole cost me my ankle for two weeks along with cuts and bruises too.
