Women On the Goldfields

Ellen Clacy describes how women were treated on the goldfields, this is her diary entry: “Dear Diary, The way we are sleeping is indescribable, women are relied on to keep their mans tent clean for when they come back from a day on the field, they came back sometimes empty handed. Some of the tents have sacks with ragged edges as floors.it was uncomfortable but still had to be done to get the money”. On the treatment of women on the gold fields, Clacy notes: “Although they come across as rough and mean they treat me like I’m a $1000 gold nugget that weighs 200 pounds, with out them my life would have no meaning. Sincerely; Ellen Clacy Catherine King
