A Letter From the Sanggu President Dear ASHS Batch 2020, This is it. Before you walk the white hallways of the Ateneo; before your first org sessions and Sanggu meetings; before Fair, Prom, Ball, and everything in between; before you have your processional down the Covered Courts in your blue toga and take your final bow – this is where your journey starts. The coming years will be an adventure marred by turbulence and difficulty, but as with any flight, the sights you’ll see will be unforgettable. Are you ready to take flight? In the preparation of this year’s Senior High School Orientation Seminar aptly named ‘Pasinaya’, a Filipino word meaning ‘inauguration’, we all had to deal with discovering our new beginnings. For us seniors, Pasinaya is a transition from being the welcomed to the welcoming, taking on the roles of being your student moderators and offering what we can to inspire you to take flight. For you, this marks the start of the school year, a new system, and a vast world for you to find yourself and find your own path. Pasinaya’s main theme is a hot air balloon flying higher than ever before, fueled by fire and a thirst to seek adventure. In the Ateneo, an adventure is never just aimlessly searching, but a never-ending discernment of growth to go beyond and be persons for others. With this, I welcome you to the Ateneo de Manila Senior High School! This is our home, and perhaps the best thing I have fallen in love with. In the coming days, I hope you fall in love with it too. Fall in love with the many opportunities the Senior High School presents, and don’t be afraid to chase after your dreams. Find a cause greater than yourself in orgs and committees; the Sanggu is always open. Grow from each person you meet and every interaction, and enjoy working with perhaps some of your closest friends for life. As I see it, the white walls of our building are a blank slate – the next two years of your life is up for you to paint, in the colors you want with the strokes you wish. As we take flight and reach beyond, serve always in all ways, and love in all ways, always. Only then can our flight be truly meaningful. This is it—this is the place where we belong. Let’s get fired up, Senior High!

While it’s common practice to greet teachers in the corridors, it’s also a good idea to familiarize yourself with the other staff. From the lunch lady to our school nurse, the security guards, and guidance counselors, it’s important to know who to turn to when we lose our belongings, need to reserve a room for a meeting, and even when we need advice regarding personal conflicts.
Go to Study Halls Whether you have to pull up your grades or need a mere confidence boost before a long test, study halls could be of great help! They offer consultation with the subject teachers and additional exercises. Plus, it’s free!
Save Money This is an old one for sure, but you know what they say: a penny saved is a penny earned. We’re all on a student budget, so spending wisely is a must. Take the e-jeep instead of paying 20 pesos for a trike ride and use the water fountains scattered across the building instead of buying bottled water in the cafeteria.
GETTING INVOLVED:
Student Committees to Join This Year
by Matthew Varona
It’s the ultimate new school question: “How can I make the most out of my time here?” The Ateneo seeks to create well-rounded individuals, and that includes being active in extracurricular activities such as committees. Here are just some of the committees you can join to do meaningful work and help other people in the process:
Get Involved
Matanglawin Matanglawin advocates for environmental sustainability and awareness in the Ateneo. Last year, Matanglawin collaborated with other student organizations to launch a year-long information campaign for environmental issues called The Green Initiative.
Fair Committee
Sandigan Committees Sandigan, founded only last year, is a group of four committees that cater to social advocacies. If you’re passionate about a particular cause, consider joining one of these:

The Batch Project Committees for Grades 11 and 12 are usually in charge of planning Junior Prom and Graduation Ball, unless the batch chooses a different batch project.
Communications Team The Communications Team creates and designs all posters and promotional materials of the Sanggu. CommComm usually composed of graphic designers, artists, photographers, feature writers, and videographers. Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions How can I join a committee? Application policies vary per committee, and committees start taking in applicants at different times of the year. Generally, however, all committees announce their sign-up processes on the ASHS Sanggunian Facebook page. What kind of work will I end up doing in a committee?
Most, if not all student committees tend to have multiple subcommittees under them. Depending on the needs of a committee, these subcomms can range from finance, promotions, design, logistics, sponsorships and more. Make sure to find out what subcommittees exist for the committees you want to join, and choose according to where you think you will fit best.
How many committees should I join? When choosing to join any committee, make sure that the work is something you are passionate about and that your schedule can handle it. While it’s great to show initiative and get involved, spreading yourself too thin will only end up making things hard for yourself and others. Get involved, but do so smartly!
