HILL WEST SPORT Autumn 2015 Even with the building work starting this term, there have still been lots of things going on with P.E. at Hill West. The Year 6 football team began their football season in fighting style , Year 1 and 2 had a successful multi-sports event and we have welcomed Veseyans Rugby Club in to work with Y6 and Y5. As well as all that, we have continued to use the Sports funding money to develop the love of sports in our pupils with funded Swimming, Hockey and Rugby sessions.

Funded Clubs Scheme The government have extended the sports funding scheme for another year and at Hill West, we are committed to using this money to develop a love of sport. As such, we want to give children the opportunity to try new sports. We also recognize the specialisms of clubs in our community and so were pleased when Veseyans Rugby Club and Streetly Hockey club agreed to join with us as part of our clubs scheme. Children from Hill West were given the opportunity to attend sessions with the clubs, at a discounted price or for free. The Children who took up this opportunity really enjoyed the sessions and encouraged many of their siblings to join too! Veseyans Rugby club have also been working with children during their curriculum time, passing on their expert knowledge to teachers and inspiring children to play tag Rugby. If you would like any contact details for either club, then please speak to Miss Hyde who will be happy to pass them on to you.

Pupil Spotlight - Jack A (Year 6) Hi my name is Jack and I’m in year 6 at the moment. I play football for Sutton Town Cyclones, Sutton District and of course the Hill West football team! I started off as a striker and tried this out for a year. However, when I saw my brother in goal, I decided to ask my manager if I could be in goal also. The first time I tried being in goal, I did really well and so I asked if I could stay in goal. Now, I’ve been playing in goal for 5 years and I’m doing really well. At the end of last year, I took part in trials for the Sutton District under 11’s football team. I was successful and became one of the first students from Hill West to play in the district team for the last two years. I really enjoy playing for the team and making new friends from other schools. The coaching I’ve received from my coach has also helped me to improve my reaction speed and save more goals! Over the rest of this football season, I hope to keep improving my football skills and maybe even one day play for a premier league team!

Y6 Football Team - 2nd Round of the U11’s knockout cup competition With a bye through to the 2nd round of the cup, Hill West travelled to Hollyfield to begin their knockout competition. Everyone in the team was really focused as they set out to show that they were real contenders in the running. Their positive attitude paid off as they quickly went in to the lead . From then on, the goals didn’t stop coming as Hamish, Harry, George and James netted the ball. The final score was 7-0 to Hill West, meaning that they are now through to the quarter finals of the cup against Maney Hill. A BIG thank you to all parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles who have watched the matches so far this season. We really value your support.

Y6 Football Team - Debut League Match V Wylde Green For their first league match this season, the new year 6 football team welcomed Wylde Green to Hill West. All the children were really excited about playing their first match of the season and they showed off just how well they worked together as a team. Excellent passing between the team meant that Hill West dominated for most of the game and they soon found themselves in the lead. There were plenty of goals gained as Hill West secured a 7-0 win. An excellent start to their season!

Cross Country Results Only the top 6 boys and top 4 girls for each team had their places scored and totaled to give their team a score. The winning team is the team with the least number of points. For league races, the teams get points for the place where they finish, which determines the end result after three races. Hill West had at least 6 boys and 6 girls, from Y4-6, running in each race. They represented Hill West well and really did the school proud. Below is the results from the first two races. Race 1 - Bishop Walsh 22.9.15 In this race, there were 124 boys running and 116 girls. Hill West Boys - 5th out of 1 9 teams, with a score of 262 (1 st place was 138). This gives them 15 points towards the league total. Hill West Girls - 1 3th out of 1 9 teams, with a score of 1 48 (1 st places was 46 points) This gives them 7 points towards the league total. Race 2 - Bishop Vesey 13.10.15 In this race, there were 124 boys running and 116 girls. Hill West Boys - 6th out of 20 teams, with a score of 233 (1 st place was 151). This gives them 15 points towards the league total. Hill West Girls - 1 2th out of 20 teams, with a score of 1 89 (1 st places was 67 points) This gives them 9 points towards the league total. The next race is on March 14th. Look out in the Spring Sports newsletter for the result!

Other Sporting News! Arthur Terry Sessions With the sports funding money, we have been able to continue our sporting partnership with Arthur Terry. This has meant that children have been able to go over to Arthur Terry and benefit from using their facilities. Sainsbury’s School Equipment Thank you for collecting the vouchers and bringing them in to school. We have received lots of super PE equipment that the children are enjoying using at lunch times and during their curriculum PE lessons. Sending Sports Equipment to Tanzania When Miss Brown and Miss Jones went to visit Tanzania, they took with them lots of sports equipment donated by Hill West. The children loved them! Both Miss Brown and Miss Jones taught them new games that they could play.
