Handball

Results

After lots of PE lessons where the children practiced and learnt the rules of handball, 8 children from year 5 were selected to play in a tournament against 7 other teams in the Wilson Stuart partnership. After some fantastic results, the team came 2nd overall! Here’s what a couple of them thought of the event:

Pupil Spotlight Hi! My name is Emily and I’m in year 4. My main sport is running and I’m in the school cross country team. Outside of school, I am part of an athletics club and I sometimes go running with my mum and dad. At my athletics club, we do three different training activities: sprinting, hill reps and track work. I like the hill reps (where we have to run up and down a hill lots of times) and I like jogging over to the hill that we run up. My favorite race this year was the Bishop Vesey race because it’s got lots of hills! Training at the athletics club meant that I was really prepared for the race and was able to face the hills positively. My biggest achievement this year was being winning the cross country league for my age group; I’m proud of my gold medal!

Y6 Football Team Quarter Final Match V Maney Hill After a long break over the winter months, the Y6 football team were excited to get back on to the football pitch. They were up against Maney Hill in the quarter finals of the cup . Hill West got off to a determined start and despite a late start, the boys were focused. On several occasions, they looked close to scoring before Mikail finally broke the 0-0 score line and placed the ball in the back of the net. However, this did not last long as Maney Hill came back to level the score at 1 all. Despite this knock-back, Hill West remained the dominant team and came back with goals from Sam(2), George and Hamish to give a final score of 5-1 to Hill West and a ticket to the semi-finals of the Sutton cup. A BIG thank you to all parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles who watched the match; we really value your support.

Cross Country Results The end of the Spring term was a busy time for the Hill West Cross Country team. Sporting their new green running tops, they stood smart on the starting line against 120 other runners. It certainly made it much easier to spot them as they ran around the course! Overall League Results (Team) At each race, the children are given a number of points according to their position. Therefore, unlike most sports, the team with the lowest number of total points wins. In each race, the first 6 boys and first 4 girls for each team have their scores totaled. Over three league races, this is how our teams got on: Boys: 4th out of 20 teams. Girls: 1 0th out of 20 teams. Boys and Girls combined: 6th out of 20 teams. Overall League Results (Individual) For those children who participated in every race, their results over the three races were calculated to give them an individual total. These were then broken up into year groups. Year 5

Boys - Adam Taylor (1 st) Thomas Smith (3rd) Year 4 Girls - Emily Symes (1 st) I’m sure you will join me in congratulating the whole team in their efforts this season; they have really done the school proud. We have a lot of talented runners coming up through all the year groups and I look forward to what the next season has to offer! A big thank you to all the parents for all their support with each race.

Other Sporting News! Health Week From the 14th-18th March, Hill West had a big focus on being healthy. As part of this week, Y6 enjoyed netball taster sessions while Year 5 were busy following fitness routines! Sutton District Football In our Autumn newsletter, there was an article about Jack A in Year 6 who successfully gained a place in the Sutton District football team. Since then, his team has won Sport in Sutton ‘Junior Team of the Year’ and on top of that, Jack has been keeping lots of clean sheets for his side. Well done, Jack! Veseyans Rugby Club Veseyans Rugby Club have been in to work with most year groups during their curriculum PE lessons. They have really inspired and motivated the children with tag rugby. If you would like any information about the club, please talk to Miss Hyde.
