Hill West Sport Summer 1 2015

HILL WEST SPORT SUMMER 1 2015 With so many 1st, 2nd and 3rd finishes , this half term has truly been a successful one. In school, our fantastic Arthur Terry lessons have continued with year 1 learning about athletics. Year 3 have been swimming and have also had Clayton, from On the Edge tennis, teaching them lots of different net skills. Finally, the money raised from our sponsorship event last term has resulted in lots of new, exciting equipment.

Results

After the success of last term’s sponsorship event, we were able to order a large amount of equipment which will benefit both curriculum lessons and lunchtime activities. The equipment brought included:

A big well done to all children who

   

5 new Frisbee targets and 40 new Frisbees A standing long jump mat, two indoor hurdle mats, two tunnel mats and a standing high jump target board. Games for lunchtime such as quoits, bats, balls, juggling balls and plate spinners. Vortexes

Already the Frisbee set has been used by the children (and Mr George!) and they have thoroughly enjoyed aiming for the targets. This has helped to spark an interest in a different sport as well as providing the children with a different way to practice aiming. Similarly, the lunch time equipment has gone down really well. Providing the children with sports equipment at lunchtime has helped to develop their interest in sport and keep them active. The indoor athletics equipment will be utilized in the winter, helping children to be best prepared for extra curricular sporting events.

Once again, I’d like to thank everyone who got involved with the event. The benefits are already clear to see.

Pupil Spotlight Hi! My name is Adam and I’m in year 4. I enjoy running and playing football. Outside of school, I attend Walsall Pheonix Football Club where I have made lots of friends. Normally I’m a striker or play in midfield on the left. I really enjoy playing because I get to pass the ball lots and get the opportunity to score goals! This year, I have represented the school in Cross Country. My highlight this year was being the fastest year 4 boy in the league. My best position was 17th, which I achieved in the championship race last term. It’s been great experience racing against lots of children who are older than me and I feel like I’ve really improved. As well as cross country, I also played in the school tennis team, helping them to come 2nd overall. It was lots of fun! I also did the Hill West fun run again this year and came 4th overall (1st out of the year 3/4 boys!) I like the course at Sutton Park because it goes over fields and tracks. I have also enjoyed visiting different places when running in the school team.

Y6 Football Team - Quarter Final of the Birmingham Shield On Friday 17th April, Miss Rowe and Miss Hyde set the Sat Nav up ready to take the football team to Colemore Primary School in Kings Heath. Hill West got off to a good start and soon the visitors were in the lead after a well worked team goal. Unfortunately, though, this was short lived as Colemore managed to put one in the back of the net to make the score one all.

Y6 Football Team - Rotary Football Tournament

However, Hill West did not let up and another goal by player of the match, Jamie, meant that Hill West were once again in the lead. Again, though, this was to be short lived as the home team slotted in a free kick which only a goal keeper on stilts would have been able to stop. Despite great team work and play, Colemore managed to take the lead with just 5 minutes left of play. With another goal just seconds before the final whistle, the home team secured a place in the semi finals.

The football team were invited to attend the 6-a-side rotary football tournament at Coles Lane. Unfortunately, the team lost the first match 1-0, taking a little while to get into the swing of things. However, they did not let this get them down and they came on to reach the semi-final. After a nail-biting penalty shoot-out, then team managed to see off the opposition, making it through to the final. Again, the final was to be a close encounter as it went down to penalties. The Hill West team persevered though and were crowned champions of the tournament!
