Message from Robert
E
Dear Friends, ach Thursday morning I talk with our Lower School students in Chapel. I eventually connect my message with one of that day’s Biblical readings, but I always begin by whispering the same question to a nearby child: “What’s on my tie today?” Since I favor ties with animals, it’s not a hard question for my young congregation, but it’s the start of three of my favorite minutes each week. Whether it’s comparing a whale pod to a devoted family or a sea turtle’s instinct for its home beach to God’s enduring love for humanity, Chapel talks help me know and nurture our youngest students.
2
The mission of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School is to know and inspire each child in an inclusive community dedicated to exceptional teaching, learning, and service. Exceptional teaching is not a special event at St. Andrew’s; it’s a daily goal and expectation. It’s a small, happy way for me to contribute to the mission of St. Andrew’s. I’m blessed to work in a community where knowing and inspiring each child is what draws my colleagues to campus each day. The relationships between and among teachers and students are the heart of St. Andrew’s, and always have been. Those caring relationships, coupled with our faculty’s extraordinary intellect and curiosity, are the source of St. Andrew’s signature strengths: exceptional teaching, learning, and service. That’s why our new mission state-
ment—a single sentence that captures our distinctive purpose—rings so true. I love how the boldness of our mission statement—particularly the promise of exceptional teaching for each child— matches its simplicity. Exceptional teaching is not a special event at St. Andrew’s; it’s a daily goal and expectation. Our teachers’ current skill and their constant growth catalyze our students’ confidence and achievement. Excellence requires growth, in education, as elsewhere. This year St. Andrew’s completes its preschool-grade 12 sweep with our new fifth grade. In the midst of adding Lower and Intermediate Schools over the past three years, many parents and friends have commented on the smooth transition, and how teaching and learning at St. Andrew’s continually improve. Careful planning and communication have been essential and so has our faculty’s shared commitment to exceptional teaching. I am tremendouly hopeful and excited about the new school year. Our new fifth grade and dynamic partnership with Teach for America are just two indicators of the creativity that infuses St. Andrew’s. We have enrolled a record number of new students for the 2010-11 school year, and the school has never been more broadly diverse. The success of the Touchstone Endowment Campaign and our annual giving program demonstrate the generous love of hundreds of families, alumni, and friends. Thanks to your steadfast support, St. Andrew’s is filled with promise and joy. And rest assured, I have a tie to match that spirit! Faithfully,

academic News goodbyes
Farewell and thank you for all you did for St. Andrew’s! Susan Burke
W
hat were you doing in 1980? Maybe you weren’t born yet, or can hardly remember, or were having a baby or were in elementary school. For Susan Burke, the answer to the question has always been easy—that was the year she came to St. Andrew’s as administrative assistant to the headmaster, Jess Borg. September 1, 1980 was the beginning of St. Andrew’s 3rd year—the school was located in the former Clara Barton Elementary School in Cabin John over the Post Office. Susan was one of four staffers; there were five full-time and 10 part-time teachers.
Susan was Associate Director of College Counseling and mistress of a gumball machine that dispensed peanuts and conversation. Over the years, Susan weathered the tripling of the student body by 1981, enjoyed commencement ceremonies for the first graduating class in 1982, witnessed the addition of a 6th grade in 1990 and later an entire preschool and elementary school, moved to two different campuses and became Secretary to the Academic Dean and later Administrative Assistant for College Counseling/Admissions. For the last many years, she was Associate Director of College Counseling and mistress of a gumball machine that dispensed peanuts and conversation. Susan, we will miss you!
Donna Thomas
W
hat can you say about a friend who is willing to channel Tina Turner—with full wig and full voice— at the annual faculty/staff party? Donna Thomas, Administrative Assistant for the Athletics Department and Transportation Coordinator, has played many roles at St. Andrew’s, from managing the school store, to riding herd on three seasons of athletic teams, 6
to making the buses run on time. More than most staffers, she got to know many students over the years, and probably has as many fans as Tina Turner. Donna began her job a few days before students flooded the Postoak campus for the first time, in August, 1998. She’s part of our history—an inimitable part!
Elaine St. Clair
E
laine St. Clair has been part of campus life since 1992, when she joined the Business Office as Administrative Assistant. Over the years she managed employee benefits and claims, handled maintenance for equipment and all kinds of purchasing. Ordering new file folders is one thing, but for the science department who need their frogs or chemicals just right, “purchasing agent” is a title that belongs in stars. Physics teacher Kurt Sinclair—who made exacting orders of astronomy equipment—called Elaine “a good friend who would gladly listen to my concerns and share her wisdom.” Elaine’s favorite job was eliminated by technology: ordering and sorting books for the entire student body. “It was a lot of work but so satisfying to see all the textbooks sorted and laid out for the entire student body to start the year.”
David Tomlinson
D
avid Tomlinson came to St. Andrew’s as tech director for the Performing Arts Department in 1998. His affable nature and can-do spirit endeared him to faculty and students alike. “Mr. T” had a gentlemanly streak and a certain style—with an opening night tradition of giving a red rose to each female member of the cast, crew and band. His excellent carpentry and creative work on sets, lighting and sound for musical and theatrical productions helped to transform students into performing artists.

’m jotting notes at daybreak on March 24, 2010 from the height of a massive outcrop of sandstone, one of the mountainous islands of rock that emerge from the red desert of Wadi Rum stretched all around us. Our camp is near. I can see Corbin and Marco stepping from their tent and stopping suddenly to look at the blaze of geology enveloping them. Katerina, absorbed in her thoughts, is walking toward the stone patio near the long, community tent. Betsy and Steve, parent adventurers extraordinaire, have just sat down, chatting warmly with our Bedouin hosts. I’m suddenly craving the sage tea we were greeted with late last night under a crisp moon, with kindness, deep in the raw ancient wilderness of southern Jordan. The hospitality of the Bedouin, despite our arrival after 11:00 p.m., was striking. They are generous, with affectionate humor, with openness, with accomodation for us and our curiosity. We feel entirely welcome. This journal entry from the spring is really part of a much longer contemplation of our school, of education, and of community. What I know firsthand is that we’re serious about learning being transformative and inclusive, about knowing our students and inspiring them. That’s the reason
I work here. And, it’s this ethos that captures the spirit and the grit of our Jordan and Jerusalem program and, indeed, that defines all of our global travel programs and our domestic service learning programs. Learning is real. Travel confronts. Inspiration is key.
Knowing and Inspiring Through Global Learning
nother moment: It is late June 2010 in Urubamba, Peru. We are in a rural village with our guides Miguel and Francesca, and with our teachers today, Jorge and several members of farming families — women, men, and children who have just fed us a mid-morning snack of roasted potatoes, corn cakes, and chicha morada. The Andes dominate the horizon. Their presence puts your heart in your throat — the unquestionable natural fortress of the Sacred Valley. Jorge walks us to a field where two oxen stand yoked by a wooden apparatus leading a hand-guided plow. Each ox is larger than an automobile. They are magnificent and intimidating and burdened. Then, Jorge explains some
farming practices and a bit about daily life for the indigenous people taking care of us. A man guides the oxen skillfully; they move with the power of breathing bulldozers. Then, it’s Kevin’s turn. And, Sarah’s. Matt’s. Kesia’s. Everyone who wants a turn has one. Some of us have a hard time wielding the plow and keeping pace with the oxen. All of us are sweaty and tired after just one turn in the field. We learn that the farmers plow for hours. What that means sinks in. Later, Rubin, in the woven colors of his ancestors, leads us through the Inca city of timeless renown, Machu Picchu. It exceeds its extraordinary reputation. The site is shocking. How can this exist? We really have stepped into a fairytale, a history book, a cloud forest. With scholarly precision, Rubin points out the intricacies of design, the Inca mastery of environmental architecture, the use of astronomy, lost principles still trying to be understood by archaeologists from every nation. The students, the parents, the teachers: we’re all sponges. Sometimes we’re snapping photos feverishly. Sometimes we’re
too awestruck to lift the camera. Some spend the rest of the day hiking the site. Some ask questions in Spanish. Some draw, explore, and lie in the sun on one of the thousand terraces of this city atop its jagged green peak. Dare I say it — inspiration may be an understatement for the experiential education of those days. The connection with Francesca is strong too; her rapport with the students flows; they facebook her immediately.

In recent years, we’ve sponsored thriving programs in Honduras, South Africa, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Spain, Quebec, Dominica, Chicago, and Appalachia. ur long-term goals for global learning at St. Andrew’s build upon the strong foundation of our past and present success; they are progressive, confident, and exciting goals appropriate to the demonstrated expertise of our faculty and staff. Among our goals are these: First, we will maintain and, in some cases, expand our standing connections

(as with our language immersion programs) and we will develop new long-term connections with partner institutions overseas and at home. On this latter front, Rev. Luther Zeigler has been working to establish a partnership with another Episcopal school in Haiti —

as he describes it, “a sustained, long-term relationship that will allow us to keep Haiti in our hearts, in our minds, and in our prayers. It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to connect culturally with another group of teachers and students to do service and to deepen our relationship with a new part of the world.” Second, we will seek innovative ways to enable as many students as possible to participate in our overseas and servicelearning travel experiences. This is a challenge in any economic climate, but comprehensive planning and new initiatives will seek to increase an already outstanding rate of participation: Almost 25% of our upper school student body participated in global learning travel programs or summer domestic servicelearning travel programs this year! Third, we will make St. Andrew’s global learning and domestic servicelearning travel programs more widely known in the greater D.C. metro community. Our programs are exemplary. When our students, parents, and teachers tell their stories, the result is powerful. St. Andrew’s is also committed to international students who seek to study in the U.S. Not only do we have inspirational experiences abroad each year, but students from Honduras and South Africa become part of the St. Andrew’s community annually, bringing new cultural perspectives to campus and building lasting relationships. An important piece of our global learning involves initiatives to welcome international students who study here for three weeks, six months, a year, or multiple years. Much is on the horizon to be shared and celebrated. llllll

Middle School Trips he trip each Middle School class takes either at the beginning or the end of the school year achieves some of the same benefits, with a short distance, that long distance travel gives to Upper School travelers. The challenge of a ropes course, education on the Chesapeake and service learning downtown take students outside of their comfort zones and encourages them to expand their ability to identify with others and the broader world. Says Chuck James, who coordinates, with Ginger Cobb and Luther Zeigler, service learning for Grades 4-12, “True community depends on us seeing in others a being like our self. It is then that we understand our shared commonalties and we fully offer our care, our respect and our nurturance to others.

Board of Trustees
Thank You to Our Departing Trustees
The Board of Trustees is
Ted Cage ‘85 served three years as an ex-officio member while he was President of the Alumni Association and four as a full trustee. Throughout his service, he was a presence on campus, renewing his relationships to faculty and forging new friendships with staff. He was a valuable member of the Master Planning Committee because of his background as an architect, and he served on the Committee on Trustees. Among the first alumni to serve on the board, Ted was a defender and champion of the school, recalls Robert Kosasky, who adds, “I have been grateful to be able to count on Ted as a clear and strong supporter of what the school’s mission is and as someone confident that St. Andrew’s growth and change was for the better.”
the governing body of an independent school. St. Andrew’s is fortunate in its trustees, who take their responsibilities very seriously. In June, four hard-working trustees—Ted Cage, Ann Michel, Richard Shackleford and Tina Silberman—cycled off the board. This fall, two alumni and two current parents will begin contributing their wisdom and expertise. We thank the retiring trustees for their service and introduce the four newcomers.
22
Ann Michel, mother of Stephen ’06, Jeffrey ’07 and Greg ’10, played a leadership role in fundraising for St. Andrew’s since her first year as a parent. She served six years on the board, chairing the Committee on Trustees, the Touchstone Campaign Steering Committee and Annual Giving, and ending as Vice Chair of the Board. Blessed with a friendly, open, and unassuming demeanor, Ann was a master of making people feel welcome. St. Andrew’s benefited from her conviction about its strengths, even while she worked to make it better. “One of her greatest gifts,” remarks Kosasky, was her “deep love and understanding of serviceoriented communities— churches and schools. She is a person who understands how people will feel about issues, and knows how to respond.” Ann was given the PALS Award (for parent leadership and service) in 2010.
Richard (Shack) Shackleford’s daughter Carla graduated from St. Andrew’s in 1993. Eleven years later, he generously came back to serve two terms as a trustee, from 2004-2010. He always served on the Diversity Committee and served many years on the Finance and Trustees Committees. Board Chair Anne Wallace called him “the most dependable, reliable trustee. He came to everything. He and his wife, Cafiner, served in every way we ever asked.” She also credits him with a unique ability to understand and convey the characteristics of risk management. He has also been a stalwart of the Admission Office, attending fairs, open houses and personally testifying to the strength of the St. Andrew’s experience. “He has a magic ability to convey the spirit of St. Andrew’s,” observes Kosasky.
Welcome New Trustees
Tina Silberman began her board service as an ex-officio member when she was SAPA President and went on to serve four years as a trustee. She’s a standout for her energy and enthusiasm, so full of life that her leadership was a draw to others to participate. She would note the need for attention somewhere and then volunteer to do it, bringing people in to help her. She chaired two auctions, co-chaired the yearlong 30th Anniversary celebration, was a founding member of the Diversity Committee and served on the Touchstone Campaign Steering Committee. “She helped build community,” Anne Wallace said. For the Head of School, Tina’s “intellect and her courage in saying what she thought was the right thing for the school” were equally valuable contributions to her trusteeship. Bob and Tina Silberman’s three sons —Rob ’09, Chris, and John—all attended St. Andrew’s.
And now, please welcome new trustees Uchenna AnyaEze, Aris Mardirossian, Erin Wright-Gandhi and Michael Di-Paula Coyle:

Uchenna Anya-Eze came to St. Andrew’s two years ago when her oldest child entered 7th grade. She has been active on the school’s Outreach Committee. She has worked in bank management and customer service in her native Nigeria and in Los Angeles, and has operated a toy exporting business and an online cosmetics business. Uchenna and Anthony Eze have a bi-continental life, with Anthony employed fulltime in Nigeria and Uchenna and the three children (4th graders Ify and Ugo, and 9th grader, Ekene) joining him for summers.
Aris Mardirossian, engineer, holder of a variety of patents, and businessman, is President and CEO of Technology Patents, LLC. He has served on the board of Suburban Hospital, the Governor’s Commission of Judiciary Selection for Montgomery County, and the University of Maryland’s Board of Visitors for the School of Engineering—to name just a few examples of his engrossing civic commitment. Aris and Marianne Mardirossian have a son, Matthew, in the 5th grade and a second child at Our Lady of Mercy School.
Erin Wright-Gandhi ’96 recently stepped down from a position as Acting Director of Advancement at Washington International School to accompany her husband, Koonal Gandhi, to San Francisco. The move coincides with Erin’s completion of a term as President of St. Andrew’s Alumni Council. During her two years as an ex-officio trustee, she served on the Sustainability Task Force, the Strategic Planning Committee, and chaired the Mission Statement task force. The Board is delighted that Erin will accept the invitation to join as a full, albeit long-distance, trustee, flying or tele-commuting to meetings. Please read all about the fourth new member of the Board, Michael DiPaula Coyle—new President of the Alumni Council—in the Alumni News section, page 55.

It’s Been a Banner Year
L
ast year, our two campuses were festooned with banners which read The Touchstone Campaign: Our promise to each child. The big, colorful banners drew attention to the largest and most successful fund raising campaign in St. Andrew’s history. Gifts from our parents, alumni, parents of alums, teachers and staff raised $12 million dollars for the school’s endowment, dedicated to the promise the school has made to reach each child—at whatever age and whatever current ability—to foster and nurture a true love and understanding of learning. Community-wide belief in the mission of the school made this campaign successful. Parents, alumni, students all realize the importance of the strong student-teacher relationship, the need for a diverse student body and the importance of service. I have heard so many wonderful stories from you about what St. Andrew’s has meant to your family—be it in preschool or high school. St. Andrew’s also has enjoyed a very successful year on many other fronts. We surpassed our annual giving goal of $750,000 and had a wonderful auction. We also welcomed our first Intermediate students with the start of our new 4th grade. The Potomac Village Campus continued to grow in size and in spirit, and hosted a whole calendar of fun-filled events, from Italian Night to the Fun Fair. Volunteers made possible all of these St. Andrew’s events. Hundreds of parents helped out in SAPA-sponsored events,
24
from Homecoming to Arts Week; alums came back to campus to participate in the Alumni Council or play in alumniteacher-student sporting events and reuned with their classmates. Teachers, students and parents all worked together in the new Campus Kitchen service project. We are fortunate to have such an involved and giving community at St. Andrew’s. What’s in store this year? You may have noticed the new banners displaying the key words of our mission statement: The mission of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School is to know and inspire each child in an inclusive community dedicated to exceptional teaching, learning, and service. The School can successfully carry out this mission because of the incredible generosity from all of you. Thank you to the entire St. Andrew’s community—I look forward to another “Banner Year”.

Oliver T. Carr III
During the year, we welcomed Mark McKnight as Chief
Treasurer
Financial Officer, succeeding Walter Manning who retired last fall. We appreciate Walter’s service to the school and welcome the new energy that Mark brings to the position. St. Andrew’s finished the 2009-10 school year with a marginal surplus. These results were achieved through careful expense management in the face of decreased operational revenues. During the year, discretionary expenses were aggressively managed resulting in an overall expense reduction. It is very important that the school continue to stay vigilant about expense management to ensure that St. Andrew’s maintains profitable operations for the foreseeable future while at the same time, committing to reinvest in our faculty, physical plant and critical program initiatives. On the balance sheet side of the ledger, St. Andrew’s was able to reduce our debt through wise management of our resources. Reduction of the school’s annual debt service and the school’s leverage is valuable during economic times when financial flexibility is so important. An important highlight for the year was the successful completion of the five year, $12 million Touchstone Endowment Campaign. Achieving this important milestone speaks volumes about the strength of the broader St. Andrew’s community and its extraordinary generosity. Thank you for your investment in the future of St. Andrew’s.

Senior Parent Legacy Gift 2010 It has been 25 years since the parents of the Class of 1985 began donating their graduating seniors’ initial enrollment deposits to the school as a parent class gift. This year, the parents of the Class of 2010 designated their gifts to the Faculty Professional Development component of the Touchstone Endowment Campaign. A number of parents in the class (noted in bold) made separate gifts in addition to returning their deposits, bringing the total donated from parents of the Class of 2010 to $518,505. Touchstone Endowment Campaign
D
onors celebrated the successful completion of the Touchstone Endowment Campaign in May—the $12 million campaign is the largest fund-raising effort in St. Andrew's history.
With Mike Beach ’88 waiting in the background, current parents Corey and Siobhan Davenport speak to Touchstone celebrants.
Former parents Jerry and Julie Gilbert with Murray Simpson, center.
Three former board chairs gathered around Head of the Upper School Joanne Beach: John Finneran with his wife Catherine Cotter, David Mayhood, and Carter Keithley with his wife Fran.

St. Andrew’s Leadership Circle St. Andrew’s is blessed with a group of donors who provide exceptional philanthropic leadership. Their generosity makes it possible for St. Andrew’s to improve existing programs, create new ones, and guarantee the future of others. The St. Andrew’s Leadership Circle was established to honor this circle of friends, and recognizes those whose lifetime support of the school in cash gifts surpasses $100,000.

nn Connors, mother, animal lover, celebrated cook and half of the heart and soul of the St. Francis— and later St. Andrew’s—Pre-Kindergarten, died on August 27 of brain cancer. She arrived at St. Francis Episcopal Day School in 1989 and taught Pre-K up until late spring at St. Andrew’s. Known for her humor, keen artistic sense and creativity, Ann left an enduring impression on countless St. Francis and St. Andrew’s families. Ann’s partner in the Pre-Kindergarten class, Peggy Best, recalled her friend’s generosity (“She would give you anything!”), her dry sense of humor which even the youngest children “got,” and her love of cooking. “She cooked with the kids, and one time she won the DC Chili Cook-Off!” Peggy recalled. Her menagerie included dogs, rats and a pot-bellied pig.

alumni news & Notes
H
ow can I adequately thank all the alumni who have helped out this year? Whether it was calling newly accepted students and encouraging them to come to St. Andrew’s, talking to classmates and reminding them to support the faculty at St. Andrew’s with a gift to the Annual Fund, or offering to host a happy hour, you made a difference. One thing that I continue to hear is how important networking is to you. If you are interested in connecting, either professionally or socially with other St. Andrew’s alumni, just join one of our networking groups: l LinkedIn.com and search for the group St. Andrew’s Episcopal School MD Alumni l www.facebook.com/StAndrewsEpiscopalSchool l Search on Facebook for St. Andrew’s Episcopal School (MD) Alumni Association group I am especially excited about our LinkedIn group which I hope you will find helpful. With this group you can connect with a St. Andrew’s alum in the same industry or find a new career opportunity on the group’s job board. One final thing. If you or one of your St. Andrew’s friends have any news, let us know. Whether it is a new job, a promotion or a family addition, give me a call at 301-983-4725 or send an email to callen@saes.org.

t. Andrew’s is fortunate in Michael DiPaula-Coyle—when he gets an invitation, he considers it seriously and says yes. That has made him an active participant at St. Andrew’s over the last few years and last June, it put his name at the top. As the new President of St. Andrew’s Alumni Council, Michael says he’s excited to continue the great work that Erin Wright-Gandhi and others have done over the past few years. “This is an exciting time in St. Andrew’s history,” he says. “I’m happy to work with the Alumni Council to help guide the direction of the school in the coming years.” After graduating from St. Andrew’s in 1998, Michael went on to attend the University of St. Andrew’s in Scotland, where he majored in History and International Relations. Following university, he moved to London where he completed a Master’s degree at King’s College before returning to Washington. He has volunteered and worked for a number of political campaigns, including the 2000 Bush/Cheney campaign. Upon returning to Washington Michael took a job in the Bush administration, spending five years working on trade and national security policy. From 2004-2007, he worked as a policy advisor and speech writer at the Bureau of Industry and Security, the U.S. government agency that develops and implements national security policies regarding high-technology trade and dual-use export controls. He then went on to serve as chief of staff at the International Trade Administration, where he served as the agency head’s staff member, political advisor, and speechwriter and as a member of the senior management team. Since 2008, Michael has been the Director of Policy at the U.S.-India Business Council, a business advocacy organization under the auspices of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Founded in 1975, the Council works to enhance bilateral investment and trade flows and serves as a direct link between business and government leaders. He travels frequently throughout the country and to South Asia to help expand business and investment ties between the two countries.

Entrepreneurial Alumni Make Their Own Opportunities Meet Justin Ross ’02 and Jack McMackin ’04
ith well over 1,500 alums, there are graduates from St. Andrew’s in almost every field. Whether it is in medicine, law, finance, or education, our graduates have made their mark and continue to make us proud in what they have accomplished. Two of our alumni, Jack McMackin ’04 and Justin Ross ’02 have decided to take a different path and create their own opportunities. In this era of economic uncertainty, they both have created something that fits a
60
need. Justin is the owner of Justin’s Café located at 1025 First St NE in Washington DC and is one of the very few places you can go for a good meal before or after a Nationals game. Jack is leading a team that is developing an interactive website to teach young adults the importance of saving and how to save and invest your money. While they have opened up businesses in different industries, Justin and Jack both mentioned St. Andrew’s as an important place for their development, and not just for its academics.
Justin remembered an algebra class with John Holden as the place where he learned about accountability. Mr. Holden refused to let Justin get by and move on without completing all of his assignments and after completing summer school, he had learned his lesson and carries that with him every day. For Jack, the lessons that he learned in robotics with Ian Kelleher continue to resonate. He mentioned that the decision making process in this class is something that comes up on a regular basis. In this class he was forced to choose between
several possible solutions. As anyone in the business world knows, being able to quickly analyze and make the correct decision is the difference between success and failure. Over the next five years, Justin hopes to take the skills that he has learned with Justin Café, and expand to different locations, eventually running his own restaurant development company. Like Justin, Jack feels extremely lucky that he has been able to find something that he enjoys doing so early in his professional career. He feels confident that he will be working in a similar line of work going forward. We wish them the best of luck with their new ventures and are happy that St. Andrew’s has been able to help them on their career paths.

Alum Featured in International VSA Festival By A ma n da H . A ll e n ‘ 9 8
This summer, the International VSA Festival included “The Iron Upright” — a kinetic art installation in which an x-ray of Cathy’s rodsupported spine is mounted in front of a moving light source — the electronics for which Cathy designed and built as part of the artwork.

urgery. A brace. Being grateful that the dress code at the time allowed grunge
fashion. If Cathy Larson ’98 hadn’t had surgery in 1993, her spine would look noticeably different from most people’s. Our classmates, however, probably wouldn’t come up with “disabled” if asked to describe her. Creative, artistic, imaginative and resourceful would come to mind instead. Scoliosis bent Cathy’s spine and provided a medium for much of her art. This summer, the International VSA Festival included “The Iron Upright” — a kinetic art installation in which an x-ray of Cathy’s rodsupported spine is mounted in front of a moving light source — the electronics for which Cathy designed and built as part of the artwork. It was displayed along with a viscosity etching she made based on a well-known engraving of the human nervous system and a piece

featuring a series of resistors illustrating the pressure exerted by the curvature of her spine. VSA is an organization highlighting art produced by people with disabilities, including hidden disabilities. “Eventually everyone becomes disabled,” Larson said. “The more people I meet, the more I realize they have metal in them, or have learning disabilities, or even ADHD. Those are all considered a disability even though they look fine on the outside. That’s the point of the VSA, they’re inclusive and they’re trying to give people opportunities.” Cathy’s other recent art includes bird nesting boxes decorated through woodburning. She’s currently honing her already impressive carpentry skills, building a classic Morris chair. Why that kind of furniture? “Every time I want to branch out [with her art] from my spine, I get another idea,” she said. “So, I figure. I’m gonna make a chair
that’s comfortable for me.” Cathy’s “Iron Upright” was on display from June 8 through August 29 at the Smithsonian International Gallery. To learn more about Cathy Larson’s art and inspiration, visit her website: www. catherinelarson.com

I’m pretty sure I added a few extra gray hairs. We love it here in North Carolina and my job is going well. I work for a dam design company called Schnabel Engineering. I mapped my first dam foundation as a geologist this past year which was quite nerve racking, but certainly gave me a ton of experience. In the next few years I hope to become a licensed geologist for the state. In the Spring 2010 magazine, we regrettably made a few mistakes. In the alumni notes section we stated that Marian Goddard would be attending American University’s MFA program for Creative Writing. She will, in fact, be working on an advanced degree at the University of Maryland at College Park. Emily (Clark) Williams was wrongly listed as Emily (Williams) Clark. In the story about the dance program, Debby Kanter’s name was incorrectly spelled. We apologize for the errors and are thankful that they were brought to our attention.
