This book is a celebration of a community’s generosity, a portrait of a school touched by visionary giving. Each of these faces — engaged, energetic, alive with the possibilities of great teaching and learning — illustrates the power of St. Andrew’s mission. Your gifts helped ensure the great school they deserve. The Touchstone Endowment Campaign made bold promises to our children, today and in the future. Your response to the $12 million challenge shattered all records of giving. Together, let’s celebrate the eloquence of our mission — it’s alive and stronger than ever. Thank you!
The mission of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School is to know and inspire each child in an inclusive community dedicated to exceptional teaching, learning, and service.
1
We promise the best teachers in the Washington area.
We are committed to finding the best teachers, the best communicators, the best advisors—people who can make meaningful connections with our students. Because they understand the myriad ways children learn, our teachers are able to reach and inspire each child. The Touchstone Endowment Campaign honors great teaching with competitive faculty compensation.
3
We promise that our children will have a richer, more varied experience as part of a culturally diverse student body.
To prepare our students for the complex and interconnected world they will inherit, students must work and play with classmates from every background. Economic and cultural diversity in the student body is an invaluable teacher. The Touchstone Endowment Campaign helps fund the growing budget for financial aid.

We promise to make service learning at home and abroad a transformative experience for all students.
We teach service learning as part of the school day because we believe that serving others teaches valuable lessons about the humanity and dignity of people in need. Your support through the endowment allows us to provide an ever-richer service experience for our children.
7
We promise a faculty that will never stop growing professionally and will always be committed to learning.
Professional development opportunities are sunshine and fresh air for great teachers— people who love learning. As endowment expands opportunities to enrich their knowledge and skills, teachers invigorate the classroom with creative teaching. Bringing the latest research on how we learn to the entire faculty through All Kinds of Minds workshops has been as illuminating for our faculty as electricity was in a one-room schoolhouse.

9
We promise to nourish the spark in each of our students.
The essence of great teaching is to inspire each child to be a great learner and a compassionate and responsible citizen of the world. Thank you for your support of the Touchstone Endowment Campaign.

My family and I were compelled to participate in the Omidyar Alumni challenge because we share a deep commitment to this great school and value the power of education, grace, and service to do good in the world. St. Andrew’s cultivates these gifts in every child to ensure that its graduates, one by one, are actively engaged in making the world a better place—the chance to be even a small part of making that possible was an opportunity we simply couldn’t refuse. Omidyar Challenges Pierre Omidyar ’84 made two challenges in the spring of 2008 — one to the Board of Trustees and one to alumni. Pierre challenged the Board to donate an additional $1 million beyond the $2 million they had already given which he would match with a $1 million gift. The challenge to alumni was more complicated: Pierre challenged a minimum of 10 alumni to give a gift of $10,000+ which he would match 5:1 up to $1 million. Both challenges were successfully met— raising an additional $3.2 million for the campaign. The success of the challenges demonstrate the extraordinary leadership of the Board of Trustees and the deep commitment of St. Andrew’s alumni who stretched to make these 20 major gifts. Kathy and I believe that an educational institution’s real assets are not its physical facilities, but its faculty and administration. This was the underlying reason for our endowing the Librarian’s position at St. Andrews. Beautiful facilities without the support of excellent teachers is simply an empty shell. Jody and Kathy Dreyfuss • Paige Dreyfuss Cooper ’93
Our three sons—each with different interests and motivations—had the benefit of maturing into young adulthood in an environment where they were known and appreciated for who they were, but also challenged to become who they were meant to be. That gift can only be offered in an environment like St. Andrew’s, where there is an embracing sense of community and an unwavering dedication to each child. The hard work of the people named on this page, and the generous donations of the people listed in this report, raised an unprecedented $12 million.
