Super-efficient garden irrigation with ollas

T

By Laurel Robertson

he most ancient, low-tech garden irrigation system known to humans may be the newest, most efficient watering method now available to Hill Country gardeners trying to produce a bumper crop of tomatoes in withering summer heat. Ollas are unglazed clay pots buried and filled with water to provide irrigation to surrounding plants. The water seeps through the unglazed porous clay at a rate influenced by the “pull” of the plants’ roots, never wasting a single drop. According to City of Austin Water Conservation 2006, “Ollas virtually eliminate the runoff and evaporation common in modern irrigation systems, allowing the plant to absorb nearly 100 percent of water.” And since they need filling only a

couple of times a week (via the olla’s small neck that extends above the soil), they make the perfect watering system for hot and dry growing conditions – like here! The only drawback? “I couldn’t find any,” recounts Lori Haynes, owner and entrepreneur behind Dripping Springs OLLAS. After a career traveling the world as a military spouse, Lori couldn’t wait to put down roots in the Hill Country and begin gardening. And like many in this region, she depended on rainwater collection and needed a water-wise way to irrigate. Lori researched ollas and was interested to learn they were believed to have originated in Northern Africa with evidence of use in China more than 4000 See DRIPPING SPRINGS OLLAS, Page 2

DRIPPING SPRINGS OLLAS, from page 1 years ago and are still used today in several countries, including India, Iran and Brazil. After searching unsuccessfully for ollas within reasonable shipping distance of her new Dripping Springs home, in 2011, Lori began producing and distributing her own brand of Dripping Springs OLLAS to garden centers and retail locations around the Hill Country. Lori designed and field-tested her Dripping Springs OLLAS to offer ample water storage with a 15% porosity and contracted a family-owned factory in Baja Mexico to manufacture them from pure

Tecate clay, with no paints or glazes. Demand grew quickly. Friends and gardening centers in other parts of the US began begging Lori to ship them the water saving wonders and offered to market them in their own regions. “We’re selling Dripping Springs OLLAS in gardening centers from Florida to New York, with a particular concentration of stores in Washington DC and Virginia,” she reports with amazement. Last year, Dripping Springs OLLAS went international, with new markets in Canada. Beyond water savings, ollas offer a multitude of other benefits, Lori points

out. Ollas distribute water directly to the plants’ root zone, leaving the soil surface dry, resulting in fewer weeds and no soil compaction – a significant drawback of surface watering. With no splashing of water on the surface of the leaves, soil-borne diseases are less prevalent. Liquid fertilizers and nutrients can be added directly into the olla to be fed to the plants’ roots, meaning less fertilizer is needed. While ollas are generally used in gardens and landscaping with soft-rooted plants, Bloom! plant nursery in Dripping Springs has had great success using them to nursery young fruit trees. On a row of four young trees, the two trees watered with an olla are roughly twice as big as the trees without ollas. Tim King, owner of King Feed in Wimberley, raved about his container-

grown tomatoes using ollas. Lori makes Dripping Springs OLLAS available at low- or no-cost to several non-profit organizations in Austin working to feed the hungry and encourage home gardening. Sunshine Community Garden (of Austin Community Gardens) has been using ollas for several seasons and is spreading their praises. Mobile Loaves and Fishes, an organization working to create a village for homeless people in Austin, has created a huge garden watered exclusively with Dripping Springs OLLAS. Lori also makes ollas available to school gardens at affordable rates. FYI • Dripping Springs OLLAS are available at garden centers and retail locations throughout Texas, the eastern US and Canada. For full information on OLLAS and where they can be purchased, visit the web site at drippingspringsollas. com, or find them on Facebook.

vid yogis tout health benefits ranging from stronger bones to calmed nerves, improved flexibility, and a sunnier outlook on life — but for those who don’t know a downward-facing dog from an extended side angle pose, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the jargon. Longtime life coach and certified yoga instructor Elaine Christine hopes to dispel any and all doubts with a brand new series of classes tailored especially for beginners, to be held at her spacious Hill Country studio — or oasis, really — Yoga for You. Classes begin August 15 and continue for eight Thursday evenings, from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm, offering a thorough but manageable sampling of gentle

stretches, breathing, and core work. Elaine first opened Yoga for You in 2002 after moving to Austin from Galveston, where she taught fitness classes at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) and the Galveston Health and Racquet Club for over a decade. “I was teaching step aerobics, and I was the only instructor who incorporated a lot of stretching,” she explains. “It really reignited my interest in yoga, and the students loved it, so that’s when I got certified.” Elaine emphasizes the complex interconnections between body, mind, and spirit in her practice — particularly, how to become fully present in one’s life. The goal is not to change external factors beyond one’s control, but rather, See YOGA FOR YOU, Page 5

She specializes in classes for mature practitioners of all levels and backgrounds, and has worked with patients and administrative staff at Austin State Hospital, as well as students with traumatic brain injuries. “When people feel stuck, or want a partner to help them shift directions, they often use a life coach,” says Elaine. “You can move through roadblocks, and see things you may not have been able to see before, with someone holding your hand the whole way.” While yoga is not necessarily integrated into her coaching, it can be a helpful addition. “A twist, for example, does three things in particular that are highly beneficial,” she advises. “It calms the nervous system, balances hormones for both men and women, and releases toxins from the body.” In addition to the upcoming beginners’ series, Elaine recommends her 8 a.m. Level 1 classes on Tuesdays and Fridays for budding yogis. “They’re really and truly for anyone, beginners to advanced,” she says. “You’ll have the opportunity to stretch every muscle in your body and walk out feeling relaxed, fluid, and peaceful.” FYI • For more details about Elaine’s beginners’ series, starting August 15, and a complete class schedule, visit the web site at www.yogaforyou.com or call 512-308-YOGA (9642).
