Git fit at new local studio, Move 2 Improve

B

By Laurel Robertson

ecause the rest of her life – as an educator, wife, mom, and business owner – is so demanding, Dawn Rudolph tries to “keep it simple” at Dripping Springs’ newest fitness studio, Move 2 Improve Fitness. She requires no contracts, no membership fees, no childcare fees and creates a relaxed, non-competitive atmosphere in the studio. “We’re all moms here,” she explains with a smile. “We understand if you have to come in late, leave early – even leave in the middle of class to pick up a child and then come back to finish!” Fitness that fits family lifestyles is the main focus at Move 2 Improve – along with fun! Evening Zumba classes are packed with participants of all ages, shapes and sizes rocking out to Latin

beats in the dark nightclub-like setting, illuminated mainly by dancing lights from a disco ball. While Zumba classes are the most numerous and popular, Move 2 Improve also offers a full schedule of daytime and evening Pilates, Yoga, Body Fit and Boot Camp classes. After teaching Zumba through local community education classes, Dawn opened her fitness studio last December in a spacious building behind Cowgirls and Lace. Her goal, she says, was to create a local spot for the number of fitness enthusiasts in Dripping Springs who were driving into Austin for workout classes. Her business model includes paying more for her staff than for rent. “I hire the best of the best and pay them well because people come to classes for the instructors,” she believes. In addition to See MOVE TO IMPROVE, Page 2

Dawn’s commitment to serving busy moms also includes providing a supervised kids’ room for toddlers and older kids at no extra cost to class participants. Two of her own teenage children often help out by staffing the kids’ room during evening classes. The best result – and biggest surprise – from opening the studio, Dawn reports, is the number of wonderful people she’s met and made friends with. “I have five sets of mothers-and-daughters in classes – and three sets of sisters,” she says with amazement. “ I’ve met students who are doing Zumba to address serious health issues, and they share that with me…. D

ripping Springs High School senior Cambria Sawyer figured out a way to convert unwanted pocket change into change for the better in one small town in Mexico. The Penny Drop project that she designed and carried out at DSHS this April raised more than $600 for the Pan de Vida Mission in Sandoval, Mexico, which provides a home for orphaned children and battered women. Cambria first learned of the shelter and its programs when she traveled to Sandoval on a mission trip. “I fell in love with the place, their spirit and the children,” she remembers. After returning home, Cambria remained in contact with the Mission and learned that they were trying to raise money to replace their deteriorated fence with a new one that would provide more security for the residents. Local Dripping Springs’ businesses allowed Cambria and her volunteers to place coin collection jars by their cash registers and some individuals provided personal donation to the project. After collecting donations for two months, the fundraising group converted all the donations into pennies and spread the coins out on the floor of an empty classroom at the high school. They invited students to stop by the room throughout the day and contribute what pocket change they could to the floor fund. As an extra little incentive for the students, Cambria convinced head basketball coach Chris Payne and history teacher Jeff Bixby to act as “human basketball hoops.” The two donned protective helmets and stood in the middle of the penny pile while students aimed coins at them. A flood of kids showed up with change in hand to pelt the pedagogues with pennies (and nickels and quarters….). The project accomplished more than one goal: it raised funds for the Mission, raised awareness at DSHS of the Pan de Vida Mission’s programs - and was a whole lot of fun, reports Cambria. Mission accomplished!

he Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary is seeking artists (including artist teams) to participate in creating art on fiberglass animals for a fundraiser to benefit and support the Zoo’s mission. Participating artists must live within a 50-mile radius of Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary. All entries are welcome and greatly appreciated, and will be accepted through July 20. Home to more then 300 animals —including 100 different species— the Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary is a private, non-profrt 501 (c)(3) zoo rescuing animals and serving the Austin community. Situated in the beautiful Hill Country just outside of town, Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary is visited by hundreds of thousands of people each year. The facility encourages emerging, amateur, and professional artists from various cultures and ethnic backgrounds to apply to participate in the art competition. Artists may request specific animals— including a lion, tiger, bear, bobcat, wolf, rooster, lamb, longhorn, peacock and llama— as their “canvas.” The entries will be juried by Leonard Lehrer, a painter and printmaker whose work has been seen internationally for decades, including 47 solo exhibitions (including New York City, Philadelphia, and throughout the U.S., Germany, Austria, Spain, and Italy) and five one-person museum exhibitions). His work has been collected by the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the National Gallery of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. Mr. Lehrer has curated intemational exhibitions and presented numerous papers, including the keynote address at Fulbright’s International Meeting in Marrakesh, Morocco. He is a Professor Emeritus of Art at New York University, and Founding Trustee of the International Print Center New York (TPCNY). The completed artworks will be on display at Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary for public viewing from February 1 through May 9, 2014. The Gala and Auction will take place on May 10, 2014. The artists, title of the piece, and name of any sponsors will be displayed by each piece. Artists will also be recognized in various printed materials, media events, on the Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary’s web site, Facebook page, and at the Gala and Auction. FYI • The call and application form are available on the Zoo’s web site at austinzoo.org. The call for artists runs through July 20. This is a juried art competition and there is no fee to enter. Throughout the summer, The Art Garage will come alive with activity morning ‘til night. From themed summer art camps to story times, tie-dye Fridays, adult workshop nights and a few special events, there’s something for anyone who has creative curiosity. Summer camps, which run weekly from June through August, will be offered for mixed ages and featuring mixed art media: ceramics, hand-building with clay, drawing, painting, fused glass, jewelry, tie-dye, color theory and more. Campers in each week’s camp will complete eight to 12 art projects and celebrate on Friday with a pARTy. Camps generally run from 10 am to 2 pm, with aftercare available from 2 pm to 6 pm. Friday mornings’ Storytime Art is geared to the pre-school crowd (although older kids are always welcome) and include a book (or two) and a related art project. Wednesday night Family Nights from 6 pm to 7 pm bring the whole family together through the creative process. The once-a-month events will offer individual themes with special discounts in the studio and free art projects. Adults and kids can get colorful at TieDye Fridays, a once-a-month open studio time to tie-dye t-shirts and other clothing in need of expression. A special ‘Red, White and Blue” tie-dye event on Sunday, June 30 will get everyone and their shirt in a patriotic spirit for the Fourth of July. Six Friday nights in June and July will host Workshops – special evenings for adults without the supervision of children. Participants may enjoy their own wine, beer, and snacks while they explore the wonders of fused glass, canvas painting, batiking, and painting pottery. The 1,800 square-foot building that is home to The Art Garage contains a classroom/party room with seating for 20-plus and a spacious studio with room for artists to spread out. In the center of the building is the kiln, where hand-built clay creations, fused glass and painted pottery are fired. Kelly feels that centering her studio around the kiln is like centering the home around the kitchen. “It’s important for kids to see their pieces go into the kiln and come out again to understand the whole process,” she says. A trained artist (she holds a Bachelors degree from Florida State University School of Visual Arts), Kelly says the experience of motherhood opened her eyes to the importance of making the world a better place for children. She decided to teach art to give children opportunities to explore, experiment and develop their creative talents. After completing graduate school and teaching high school in Florida, Kelly moved to Austin in 2008 and began to teach art to friends’ kids in her garage studio. That’s right, the Art Garage really be-

As an educator and artist, Kelly is convinced the best thing for a child between ages four and 10 is to really experience art – that is, to try a lot of different kinds of art. At The Art Garage, Kelly works with four other teachers to share her love of creating with kids and adults in her community. FYI • The Art Garage is located at 11190 Circle Drive in Southwest Austin, about 10 minutes east of Dripping Springs.
