By Laurel Robertson

cott Garner has spent his entire adult life giving people rides in black cars. For 23 years as a police officer and Army MP, he mostly took them to jail. These days, he happily delivers folks safely to their own front door – or whatever destination they choose – as owner and head driver of Deer Run Chauffeur Services in Dripping Springs. “I like to keep people safe,” Scott explains, simply. “And I like making them feel important.” He thinks his new role as a professional chauffeur combines both worlds. “As a police officer, I was really in the business of customer service – this is not all that different. I was trained to be accountable – if I say I’ll be there, I will!” Scott’s reasoning in starting his chauffeur service was simple: “Everyone wants to go somewhere,” he says. Deer Run Chauffeur Service opened in December

of 2012 with one black Suburban, mainly taking group wine tours to Hill Country vineyards. Word of his customer service, reliability, and great rates soon spread and by February he’d added a limousine to his business. Today, Deer Run’s fleet includes three Suburbans, two Mercedes Benz vans, one stretch limo and a 24-passenger party bus. Scott still does much of the driving, though he employs seven drivers to help out with the increasing demand. He hires mature people, runs background checks, and rewards them well for their service, so passengers can feel safe in their hands, he claims. “They’re the backbone of my company,” he brags “and they know the back roads of Hays County better than Google Maps!” He points out how often online navigation services are confused by the Hill Country’s winding lanes and See CHAUFFEUR, page 2

detours for flooded low-water crossings Another benefit of his hometown service, Scott says, is that instead of talking on the phone with a distant dispatcher, customers will be conversing directly with the person who will book and likely drive their tour, and make sure their limo is safe, serviced and impeccably clean. Deer Run offers transportation for wine tours, couples’ nights out, airport runs, business trips and special events: weddings, proms, anniversaries, quinceaneras, birthday parties, etc. Scott, who has driven high-profile clients such as Rick Perry in his car, knows that driver discretion is important for folks to feel free to have a good time. “What happens in the limo, stays in the limo,” he says with assurance. Besides delivering locals and Austinites to their desired destinations, Scott’s cars and vans frequently deliver food and goods for local non-profits. He recalls a recent instance where a regular customer called him with an urgent request to deliver food for an after-school program. “I jumped right into the van and did what they asked,” he says. “I feel that serving my community in whatever way I can is part of the job.” FYI • Deer Run Chauffeur Services, LLC, offers sedan and limousine service to any destination in the Central Texas area. Local musicians helping kids By Laurel Robertson

Exceptional Saturdays

t’s Saturday morning, and Bill Paige is arriving at Hudson’s on Mercer Street with guitar in hand and hundreds of songs in his head to share with the special needs kids who join him weekly for Exceptional Saturdays at the Dripping Springs music venue. Most weeks, four to five students come; on this January morning, a single participant arrives for the class, along with Bill’s friend and fellow musician, Jerry Kirk. Together, the two musicians keep Brandon Rummel singing, clapping and laughing through an hour of Beatles tunes – his favorite music. Brandon, who lives with cerebral palsy, is fully engaged and focused for the entire session – not always an easy thing to accomplish, says his assistant, Holly Cantalupo, who’s been bringing Brandon to Exceptional Saturdays since last August. “He really uses his voice here – the whole experience makes him very happy,” she says. Bill, who’s spent his life as a musical performer and music journalist, has donated his time and talents to Exceptional Saturdays for more than a year now. He first became interested in the special needs community years ago as a reporter for UPI, covering McDonald’s plans to make Braille menus available in thousands of their restaurants. “I found myself interested in the needs of those trying to navigate society without certain cognitive or physical abilities,” he remembers. Later, he helped one of his community college students launch “Handicap This!”, a touring play that

When Bill retired to Dripping Springs a few years ago, he took a part-time job as an aide for special needs students on DSISD buses and began bringing instruments - ukuleles, harmonicas, etc. - for the kids to play on the bus. Watching their enjoyment gave him the idea for Exceptional Saturdays. He proposed the idea to Chad and Natasha Hudson, owners of Hudson’s on Mercer, and they agreed to donate space for the program. Bill tries to focus on meeting his students “where they are – not where our expectations are.” At Exceptional Saturdays, he lets the participants lead in their own cognitive and physical development by playing songs they request, putting in-

struments in their hands and letting them play along with the songs, and helping them gain body control and social skills making music on their own terms. “One girl just wanted to straighten the microphone cords,” he recounts – which he let her do. Meanwhile, she was enjoying and internalizing the music, he knows. See MUSIC, page 4

kuleles can change lives, claims Tommy Mojica. They certainly changed his, says the Dripping Springs musician and music teacher. When he was a ten-year-old at summer camp, Tommy became fascinated with the music from a musician there was playing on a small stringed instrument. The man showed Tommy a few simple chords on the ukulele and let him borrow it for the evening. The young boy sat on his bunk and worked until he had learned to play all his favorite songs on four strings, using just three chords. He was hooked! Fast forward several decades, and the BA in Music Education lands in Dripping Springs to care for an ailing family member. He quickly found work using the talents he was most passionate about - music and working with kids – through Dripping Springs Independent School District and several private academies. He also taught private ukulele and guitar lessons to students, eventually forming the Dripping Strings, an all-ukulele performance group. The group has performed at festivals and fundraisers all over town, including Founders Day, Christmas on Mercer, the Tomato Round-Up, the Texas Night Sky

Festival, Drippin’ with Taste, and at venues such as Nutty Brown Café, Homespun, Smoke ‘n Hops, and Westcave Winery. He adds that Bill Paige, of Exceptional Saturdays (accompanying article), often helps with drums, guitar, vocals, and sound systems for the group. From his musical connections, both as a teacher and a performer, Tommy learned there were a number of kids in the community without the resources to afford lessons and instruments - and the joy that comes from those. Remembering this own childhood pleasure with a ukulele, Tommy determined to bring the gift of music to those kids. With its low cost, compact size, nylon strings, and simple strumming pattern, the ukulele makes the perfect beginning instrument, he thought. See MUSIC, page 5

Photo courtesy Tommy Mojica. Two years ago, Tommy decided to provide ukuleles for the boys at the local Burke Center for Youth. He needed $500 to buy 20 instruments, so he posted a plea on a local Facebook page asking for help with that. Within four days, locals had donated $1,500 to the cause! When checks and cash kept showing up in his mail box, under his door mat and from people just driving past, Tommy decided to start a non-profit, Ukuleles for Others (UFO). He was assisted in the endeavor by his friend and children’s book author, Wendy Parnell.Since then, Tommy has been teaching ukulele lessons at the Burke Center once a month, with help from other local musicians.

He’s donated ukuleles to Bill Paige’s Exceptional Saturdays and Dripping Strings has started giving away ukuleles at their performances. Tommy says he’s noticed a resurgence of interest in the ukulele nationwide in the past few years. The current goal for UFO is to raise enough funds to bring ukuleles and lessons to every foster care home in Texas. Tommy also intends to pursue grants to teach residents of children’s homes, battered women’s centers and cancer wards to play the instrument that has brought so much pleasure to his life.
