Tiger Tri Youth Triathlon in Highpointe May 22

ids from Dripping Springs’ Tiger Splash Swim Team will swim, run and bicycle their hearts out to help spread the word that no child is drownproof. The Tiger Tri Youth Triathlon May 22 will raise money for Colin’s Hope, an Austin-based non-profit whose mission is to prevent childhood drowning. Named in honor of Colin Holst, a 4-year-old Austin boy who drowned in 2007, the group works to educate children, parents and lifeguards on drowning prevention. This is the fifth year the Tiger Splash Swim Team has supported Colin’s Hope through work projects and fundraising. Though every child on the swim team can swim at least the length of a pool, they are all aware that “drowning is not limited to non-swimmers.” Colin, they know, was an accom-

plished beginning swimmer who drowned one summer afternoon in just a few short moments, though he was surrounded by adults and lifeguards who were looking out for him. Since drowning is the number one cause of death for children under the age of four, and a leading cause of death for all children, they’re committed to helping Colin’s Hope promote simple water safety tips and rules that might make a difference in the life of another child. In previous years, the swim team assembled water safety packets that were given away throughout the area. Last year they held a Fitness Fair to promote swimming and water safety. Club members raised money through pledges towards how many laps of the pool they swam. The Triathlon is open to all kids in the See TIGER TRI, page 2

It will take place in Highpointe subdivision, with swim racing in the community pool, foot racing through the park and green spaces, and bicycling on Cool Spring Way (the loop through the neighborhood). Three age groups will compete with varying race distances: “Rookies” (ages 5-6 years) - 25 meter swim, .5 mile bike, .3 mile run; “Juniors” (ages 7-10 years) – 100 meter swim, 2.1 mile bike, .6 mile run; and “Seniors” (ages 11-15 years) – 200 meter swim, 4.4 mile bike, 1.2 mile run. All participants will receive a medal and a t-shirt; there will be trophies for top finishers in each age group. The Tiger Splash Swim Team begins practice in May, holding its first swim meet Memorial Day weekend at Founders Park pool. The team will continue to participate in swim meets throughout the summer, competing against teams from Belterra, the Dripping Springs YMCA. Circle C, Southwest Parkway and other regional swim clubs. A primary goal of the team is to “build a love of swimming in a fun environment,” says Nicole McGilvray, president of the Tiger Splash Board of Directors. MAY 2016 HILL COUNTRY GUITARS, from page 4 He’s gotten a lot of help, he says, from the folks at Collings Guitar, luthier to the stars who produce their world-famous guitars right here in Dripping Springs. Hill Country Guitars is the third leading seller of Collings Guitars nation-wide. Dwain relocated his guitar store to downtown Austin in 2014 to better serve a growing clientele of successful musicians, entrepreneurs and professionals who sought him out while they were in town for music festivals and conventions. Though he regularly deals with famous people (Jerry Jeff Walker, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Joe Walsh and Ray Benson are among his customers), that’s nothing unusual for Dwain, who grew up in the company of movie stars, Apollo astronauts and even the King of the Zulu Tribe on the YO Ranch outside Kerrville. “My dad was head of maintenance and my mom was the cook there,” he explains. “We were 45 miles from the nearest town.” Though the actors, astronauts and government officials were glad to spend time talking with the local kid on the exotic hunting ranch, Dwain says he learned to respect their privacy and “give them space.” That attitude of respect and people skills has served him well in dealing with rock stars and others who have sought him out to find their dream guitar, he believes. Though supplying high-end instruments for the discerning musician has been his business model to this point, Dwain is shifting gears somewhat with the new store in Dripping. While the shop will maintain the inventory of high-end instruments, ”we also want to meet local needs by including guitars and band instruments for beginning students,“ he says. He’ll stock higher-quality beginning instruments, because “a child deserves the best chance to succeed, with an instru-

The new guitar store is housed in a 1910-era building on Mercer. With deep leather couches, thick rugs, and warm-colored woodwork, it invites shoppers to sit back and enjoy playing the instruments. There’s a separate room in the back for trying out electric instruments with amps. Dwain particularly enjoys placing some of the higher-end pieces into the impressionable hands of beginning players. “It teaches them respect for the instruments from the start,” he claims. Besides acoustic and electric guitars and amps, Hill Country Guitars sells resonator guitars, mandolins, ukuleles, banjos, and “walkabout” dulcimers, made in Wimberley by the Olympia Dulcimer Company. You’ll also find instrument accessories (strings, picks, tuners, valve oil, slide grease, mouth pieces, reeds, etc.) and they even offer repair services. “We’ll do repairs here, or send out to other shops when it’s something that needs a specialist. We’re experienced enough and humble enough, to know our limits,” Dwain says in his plain-spoken way. FYI • Hill Country Guitars, LLC, is located at 302 Mercer Street. Hours are 11 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday. For more information, visit the web site at hillcountryguitars. com, find them on Facebook, or call 512-858-7100.

Register now, fun summer theatre camps for kids 5-16 AUSTIN H Since 1980, kidsActing has been a place for kids in ages 4-18 to sing, dance, act and express themselves on stage. Two full-scale professional productions are on the docket this summer for the kidsActing stage. For three weeks in June, performers 7 to 18 years old are invited to take a fantastical journey beyond the Wall in search of a magical fallen star in “Stardust.” “This play is full of wonderful characters, like conniving princes, sky pirates, and evil witches” says director Dylan Kittleman, “It’s as fun as The Princess Bride, with lots of magic, humor and adventure, but it’s got more plot twists and quirky characters. I’ve been wanting to direct this play for ages.” In July, kids ages 8 to 18 will cut loose and kick off their Sunday shoes for four lively weeks as “Footloose” takes the stage. Campers will be guided by professional director and choreographer, Courtney Jacobs, and music director, Tyler Mabry, to strengthen vocal, dancing and acting skills, with iconic music from the mid-1980s, like “Footloose,” “I Need A Hero,” and “Let’s Hear It For The Boy.” “Most of us have seen one of the movie versions of “Footloose,” and yet, there is nothing like being in it, on stage,” says Courtney. “It’s exciting, presents a theme still relevant to young people, and has these memorable songs, that are just so much fun to sing and dance to.” Both full-scale productions will be performed in the 160-seat venue at Center Stage Theatre, including professionally produced sets, costumes, lights, and live accompaniment. In addition to multi-week full-scale productions, kidsActing offers their ever popular, award winning one-week summer camps all summer long for children ages 5-16 in 16 locations in and around Austin. Kids can have a great time becoming characters, singing and dancing like a pro, sword fighting, and playing lots of hilarious and engaging theatre games. FYI • KidsActing summer camps in Dripping Springs include: “Wizard of Oz” June 20-24 (ages 6-12); “Wizardry” July 11-15 (ages 6-13); and “Annie” August 15-19 (ages 5-11). These camps will take place at Dripping Springs United Methodist Church at 28900 Ranch Road 12. For more information, visit the web site at www.kidsactingstudio.com.
