Wild art at Austin Zoo Revue through May 9

ome of the most unusual animals you’ll ever see—a patchwork pig, a landscape llama, a bejeweled rooster, an accordion armadillo—are at The Austin Zoo through May 9. Even though upkeep on these amazing animals is low (they don’t need food or shelter), the Zoo will be sending them home with the highest bidders following a Gala in their honor on the evening of May 10. Austin Zoo Revue 2014 is a fanciful new fundraiser for the non-profit Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary that gives local artists, amateur and professional, a blank canvas in the form of a fibreglass animal to interpret in their wildest imagination. Last summer, a dozen artists were chosen from scores of applicants by prominent painter and printmaker Leon-
ard Lehrer and given different fibreglass animal forms with which to “go wild.” The artistic results were premiered at the Zoo in February and have been on display for Zoo patrons to view and vote for their favorites. Winning entries will be announced at a Gala held on the Zoo grounds the evening of May 10. A People’s Choice award will be chosen by vote of Zoo visitors; a Zookeepers Award will be selected by the Austin Zoo staff; a Best of Show award will be determined by show juror Leonard Lehrer. After a dinner catered by Gourmet Gals Catering, served with local beer, wine and spirits, a Live Auction will offer Gala guests chances to bid on the art animals and other treasures such as: a week at Outpost Wilderness Adventure See ZOO REVUE, page 2

Proceeds from this first (to be annual) Zoo Revue will benefit and support the Zoo’s mission to assist animals in need through rescue, rehabilitation and education. The non-profit organization is the largest zoo in the Austin area and serves as both a zoo and an animal sanctuary – more than 95 percent of the 300 exotic animals at the zoo arrived as rescues, were surrendered by owners that could no longer handle them, or are retired lab or service animals. The Zoo’s animal population includes dozens of large mammals (lions and tigers and bears!) and an extensive menagerie of monkeys, exotic birds, and reptiles. There are also some unusual animals you may never have seen: a coahtimundi, servals, spotted genets and a binturong. One of their the Zoo’s recent acquisitions is a baby kangaroo. And for petting, there are more common animals: goats, sheep, ducks, and—wandering the grounds—chickens, guineas and pea fowl. DRIPPING SPRINGS H Hays County 4-H members spent part of their Spring Break participating in a 4-H Clothing Workshop at Val & Kim’s Quilt Shop in Dripping Springs. The workshop kicked off with a scavenger hunt of the store. 4-H’ers then made bags from drink pouches and learned about the new Texas 4-H Trashion Show in which 4-H’ers transition trash into fashion. Participants also learned about many other 4-H clothing project opportunities including Fashion Storyboard, Quilt Challenge and Fashion Show. The highlight of the workshop was making several quilts to be donated to children at local hospitals. hat do you get when you mix great hickory-smoked barbecue with craft beer, live music on an outdoor patio, an old-style shuffleboard table and a children’s playground - and top it off with a pretty bar keep that calls you “Hon”? You get Smoke ‘n Hops, Dripping Springs’ barbecue brewpub with a family-friendly, weather-flexible attitude. Located on Highway 290 just west of Sunset Canyon, the new restaurant and music venue opened last August and continues to innovate and improve. After creating an ingenious reversible bandstand that can face the outdoor patio in good weather and turn to face the indoor tables in inclement weather, Smoke ‘n Hops added a large fenced playground that is easily viewed from the patio tables. Next up is moving their brewing operation from the present one-room shed into a new two-story brewing facility with a lab and grain mill upstairs and a 217-gallon brewhouse downstairs. An old train station from Goliad is being moved to the three-acre property and renovated into the new brewhouse. Plenty of parking wraps the building and stretches into the acres behind. The layout of the restaurant accommodates many needs: there’s a quiet area at the front with tables for conversation. A long hall holding their vintage shuffleboard table separates the front area from the tables and bar at the back where nine large-screen TVs and a regulation pool table entertain happy hour patrons. The patio is visible and accessible through the wall of glass doors that opens wide to bring the outdoors in during beautiful spring and fall weather. Between the patio and bar area the dynamic stage is filled two or three nights each week with live music from top local bands and on Sunday afternoons with a special Children’s Music Time with local musician Tommy Mojica. Co-owner and pitmaster Rick Day has been dreaming about and conceptualizing Smoke ‘n Hops for more than 15 years and says now he’s working his dream job. When Rick began catering and competitive barbecue cooking 20 years ago, he became friends with a well-known Texas spice maker and the two friends created rubs which Rick uses today in his distinctive barbecue. His attention to every barbecuing detail includes using only pecan and hickory wood in his wall-sized smoker (large enough to cook 50 briskets at a time). The rich, smoky flavor they instill in the meat

Bouncing from tending a vat of boiling mash to savoring the unusual flavors of his 1,000-year-old German recipe Gose beer, brewmaster Jorge Espino is a man clearly in love with his craft. Jorge started his brewing career in college, making beer for himself and his friends, then followed his passion for beer crafting to Austin where he worked at two brewhouses, learning his way around a production brewery. When Jorge met Smoke ‘n Hops owners Rick and Lloyd Lee, his dream of brewing in a brewpub setting became reality. At any given time, Smoke ‘n Hops has on draught at least three housebrewed beers and a wide assortment of beers from other local breweries: Twisted X Brewery, Real Ale, Circle Brewery, Live Oak Brewery, Deep Ellum, Shiner and Lone Star. They also stock their full-service bar with a variety of Texas liquors: Dolce Vida Tequila, Deep Eddy Vodka, Dripping Springs Vodka, Paula’s Texas Lemon and Orange, Red River Bourbon and Rye, and Spirit of Texas Rum, along with several selections of wines from Becker Vineyards.
Besides plates and sandwiches featuring barbecue brisket, sausage, pulled pork, ribs and chicken (with trimmings), Smoke ‘n Hops offers an unique array of appetizers. There are Brisket Poppers (jalapenos stuffed with brisket and cheeses) and Brisket Rolls (a deep-fried brisket-infused interpretation of the eggroll). You’ll find menu selections for kids and a Hemp Seed Vegan Burger for the non-meat eaters. Desserts include cobblers (made in-house) and cheesecake from Austintatious.
