Hill Country Care hosts annual Crawfish Boil I By Laurel Robertson

t’ll be another wild and crazy afternoon at Hill Country Care when the sixth annual Crawfish Boil and Cajun Celebration takes over the nursing facility on March 25. Crawfish fresh from Louisiana with all the fixings will fill every plate, while music from Charles Thibodeaux and the Cajun Aces fills the air. At this year’s Crawfish Boil, Hill Country Care will ratchet that nursing home staple, Bingo, up a notch with the help of hens from their backyard flock. Chicken Poop Bingo (just what you imagine it is) promises to become an instant favorite with residents and visitors alike! Homemade desserts and handmade baby blankets will be sold and raffled. Antique car clubs, Centex Tin Lizzies and Road Relics, will bring their Model

Free tax services, help Free assistance with income tax preparation is available through DSISD Community Services, which is sponsoring the AARP Tax-Aide program, located at the Dripping Springs Independent School District Administration building at 510 West Mercer Street. Volunteers are available at this site on Tuesdays through April 18 (except during spring break) from 2 pm to 7 pm. Tax returns will be filed electronically. To make an appointment, leave a message at 512-858-0954. The local tax assistance group is part of the AARP Tax-Aide program. Each year, the volunteers are trained and certified by the IRS. Although AARP focuses on the needs of older taxpayers, the Tax-Aide program has no age limits. The local site will continue to provide assistance to taxpayers of all ages. Tax-Aide assistance is limited to returns within the scope of the Tax-Aide training. Taxpayers who have their returns prepared by Tax-Aide must bring photo identification, social security cards for all family members, all W-2 and 1099 forms for 2016, forms showing coverage by health insurance, a checkbook for direct deposit information, and any other relevant information about 2016 income and expenses. You also must bring their 2015 tax return as a change to new software does not allow access to data from previous years. FYI • For more information about the scope of the program, taxpayers may leave a message at 512-858-0954.

Brass nameplates honoring their donations can still be seen on residents’ doors in the facility today. The non-profit group ran the Nursing and Rehab Facility for more than 20 years, when it was purchased by a forprofit health care group. The Bluebonnet Auxiliary still plays an active role in HCC today, providing additional services and enrichment residents wouldn’t otherwise receive: monthly birthday parties, holiday dinners and celebrations, sometimes clothes and special purchases for residents. With proceeds from past fundraisers, the Bluebonnets created outdoor gardens and a chicken yard at Hill Country Care for the enjoyment of residents and their visitors. They added a shaded outdoor patio with a path winding down to the henhouse. “Grandma’s Hideaway” was designed make visits with grandparents more fun for all family members. More gardens, a rainwater collection system, an automatic drip irrigation system and a hydroponic garden are planned for the future. une McCarty, a founding member of Bluebonnet Auxiliary and Hill Country Care, died February 25 at the nursing facility, where she had been a resident for three years. June was born in 1921 in Salt Lake City and was widowed during WWII. She and her second husband, Lynn McCarty, moved to Henly in the 1950s, where they raised a son from her first marriage and their two children. Lynn served as a Hays County Commissioner for 25 years. June served the Henly, Dripping Springs and Johnson City communities as a PTA board member, a charter member and first president of the Henly Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, a charter member of the LBJ Hospital Auxiliary, an early organizer of the Dripping Springs Public Library, and as a charter member of the Bluebonnet Auxiliary. June taught Sunday School at Henly Baptist Church for 28 years and for many years managed the Hill Country Senior Citizens Apartments in Dripping Springs. June was active for more than 20 years in the Bluebonnet Auxiliary, which built and ran Hill Country Care until 2006. Many of her co-workers and Auxiliary members claim that without the work and dedication of June McCarty, Hill Country Care would not exist.

hen our night skies become dulled by excessive night lighting, we lose more than a clear view of the Milky Way, researchers say. We risk a number of health and environmental problems linked to the diminishing natural darkness above our cities and suburbs. The Texas Night Sky Festival, coming to Dripping Springs March 18, will celebrate the beauty and wonder of the night sky — and illuminate the risks posed to all forms of life (including humans) caused by light pollution. The International Dark Sky Association (IDA) of Texas, the City of Dripping Springs and the Hays County Chapter of Texas Master will co-host this second Night Sky Festival at Dripping Springs Ranch Park’s Event Center. The entire event will be free and open to the public. Inside the Event Center all afternoon, attendees will be able to enjoy nine sky shows in two mobile planetariums, listen to speakers and live music on two stages, view the sun through solar telescopes, walk a scale model of the solar system, and sit in a tepee to hear mythical tales of the constellations from European and Native American traditions.

They’ll learn from industry experts about the most tech-appropriate night lighting that promotes safety, convenience and effectiveness. Paul Bogard, the author of the awardwinning book, The End of Night: Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light, and the anthology Let There Be Night: Testimony on Behalf of the Dark, will share his findings about a world where nights are increasingly as bright as day, and eight out of ten Americans can’t see the Milky Way. Citing evidence that exposure to artificial night light is a factor in conditions from poor sleep to cancer, Paul will shed light on what we’ve lost, what we have left and how we can restore starry nights - one of nature’s most thrilling wonders. Space physics instructor Bob Mahoney will talk about “Stars, Orbits and Spaceships,” and local lighting expert and IDA Texas Leader Cindy Luongo Cassidy will present “Life on Earth Depends on Darkness.” Locals can find out about Dripping Springs’ Be a Star Award that recognizes residents’ efforts to protect the night sky. Other hungers can be satisfied at a host of local food trailers: Crepe Crazy, Yapa Empanadas, Skull and Cakebones, Ybor Café, Rosarito, Your Mom’s and Rolling in Thyme and Dough. Live music by the Hot Texas Swing Band, Dripping Strings, and the Kincheroffs will keep everyone stepping lively as they explore the many wonders available ato them at the festival. After dark, activities move to the Ranch Park’s Observation Field (weather allowing) for a Star Party. Curious minds can talk firsthand with professional astronomers and hear Tales of the Constel-

The next morning, enthusiasts can breakfast with dark sky experts from all over Texas and hear Bill Wren of the University of Texas’ McDonald Observatory speak about their ongoing fight to keep West Texas free of light pollution. Dark
