Old fashion fun at Pioneer Day September 24

ook and feel 100 years younger this September 24 as Pioneer Day comes to life at the Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead in Dripping Springs. Pioneer Day re-creates and celebrates life as it was on Dripping Springs’ original homestead during the late 1800s. Participants can stroll beneath giant oaks on the historic grounds watching girls in bonnets chase large wooden hoops and boys in suspenders shoot marbles in the dirt. They can watch a spinner tease wool into yarn, a blacksmith hammer metal at a forge, a flint knapper craft arrowpoints from stone, an outdoor cook make German pancakes in a Dutch oven, - and many more demonstrations of crafts and skills that were essential on the Texas frontier. In this year’s expanded Children’s Area, young participants can try their

hand at candledipping, sewing quilt cards, shaping clay pots, carving quill pens, crafting cornhusk dolls, and six more hands-on activities that would have been familiar to pioneer children. Along with each activity, they’ll learn about life on the Texas frontier that made those skills important. They can take part in a one-room schoolhouse and hold baby animals in a petting zoo. Kids can exert themselves in traditional sack races, washer-pitching contests, hoop-and-stick chases, corn toss games and stilt walking. They can also rest with quieter activities such as checkers, chess and Lincoln logs. Civil War and cowboy reenactors will be there in authentic costume: men in woolen military uniforms and leather frontier garb, women in hoop skirts and bonnets. Along with other authentic era See WESTCAVE ROADRUNNER, page 2

The popular Pounds Grounds cafe will offer its usual bonanza of homemade pound cakes, for sale by the slice or by the cake, accompanied by coffee courtesy of Mazama Coffee Company. The Silent Auction will offer a unique selection of valuable and historic pieces - added to this year by a special sale of antique furniture and household items being collected by the Heritage Society. And, of course, there will be tours of the Pound House, led by docents in period dress. Built in 1854 by Dripping Springs’ first settlers, Dr. Joseph Pound

and his wife Sarah, the home was originally a two-room log cabin on the edge of the Texas wilderness. The cabin, eventually expanded to a six-room house, was the community center for early pioneers of the area. The Pounds raised nine children there; four generations of their family occupied the farmstead over a period of 130 years, until 1983. The house and outbuildings have been painstakingly restored over the last two decades and today are the centerpiece of the five-acre Dr. Pound Histori-

Photo exhibit tells story of Cynthia Ann, Quanah Parker

T

he dramatic and true story of Cynthia Ann Parker, taken captive in 1836 at age nine by Comanche raiders, and her son Quanah Parker, who became a dominant figure in Comanche history, is told through 40 rarely seen photographs at the Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead Museum August 27 through October 16. The traveling photo exhibit, “The Cynthia Ann and Quanah Parker Exhibit, a Woman OF Two Worlds and a Man IN Two Worlds,” is sponsored by The Texas Trail of Fame and organized by The Texas Lakes Trail Region. The rare photo exhibit will make just 10 stops during its year-long tour around Texas. In 1836, a Comanche raiding party took Cynthia Ann from her family in Texas and over the following years, she became wife to a Comanche chief and mother to three children, Quanah the oldest. After Cynthia Ann was recaptured by Texas Rangers in 1860 and taken back to her Anglo family, Quanah went on to become one of the most important Comanche leaders. He led his people in both war and peace and spoke for them with the American leaders – President Teddy Roosevelt among them. The story of Cynthia Ann and Quanah is important to the history of the time and offers an insight into the lives of both native peoples and Americans on the frontier. Biographer Bill Neeley wrote of Quanah: “… he never lost a battle to the white man and he also accepted the challenge and responsibility of leading the whole Comanche tribe on the difficult road toward their new existence.”

rivers along Highway 290 just east of Ranch Road 12 might notice something new popping up along the roadside each Wednesday afternoon: a row of cheerful signs picturing the tastes and treats that await them at the Dripping Springs Farmers Market, just behind the signs. Dozens of white awnings dot the grassy field of Veterans Memorial Park on Wednesday afternoons, filled with booths selling virtually every vegetable or fruit in season in Central Texas, along with specialty produce, such as locally grown mushrooms. Farmers and ranchers bring freerange eggs, honey, grass-fed beef and lamb, pastured chicken and natural pork. Shoppers can also find artisan cheeses, locally pressed olive oils, fresh-squeezed juices, gourmet sauces and salsas, simmered bone broths, and baked goods (sweet, savory, and gluten-free) at the market. Regular customers and curious tourists wander the aisles, sampling tasty wares and filling their shopping bags with produce picked only hours before. Children play on the grass and dogs enjoy an afternoon outing, while patrons sip wine and coffee at picnic tables in the shade of large oaks. Live music fills the air as smiling shoppers meet and greet friends from all over the Dripping Springs community. Hungry shoppers can enjoy ready-togo, authentic global cuisine, hailing from Chile to Thailand, India to Ireland. Freshly popped corn, gourmet gelatos, organic popsicles, roasted nuts, handmade chocolates, and yummy baked goods make for delightful (and healthy!) snacking. Hill Country wines are available by the bottle or glass. Specialty booths offer bath soaps, natural cleaning products, children’s clothes and kitchen linens, lavender products, alpaca and mohair goods, and more – all made by the vendors themselves. The Dripping Springs Farmers Market is a Texas Department of Agriculture-certified, “producer-only” market, explains Board member Marianne Simmons – every product is grown or made

The City of Dripping Springs has owned and operated the Farmers Market since 2009 and is witnessing phenomenal growth in the number of vendors and customers coming to the market in the last year. “Right now, we have more vendors than we’ve ever had,” says Market Manager Laurel Robertson, “and this fall, I expect even more.” Autumn, she explains, is the best season for farming and gardening in Central Texas, with a larger variety of crops available to bring to market. “We also have a number of craft vendors who will bring their handmade creations to our Holiday Markets in November and December.” The Farmers Market, See FARMERS MARKET, page 5

The market wouldn’t be possible, Laurel says, without the support of the city and the dedicated work of the Farmers Market Board of Directors and Marketing Committee, who volunteer hundreds of hours each year to keep the market moving forward. Just getting the new signs permitted took months of effort on the part of several volunteers, headed by then-President Marianne. “I wrote a Master Sign Plan and filed two applications for variances,” Marianne explains. She shepherded the plan through two city commissions and on to City Council, where she says it met with overwhelming approval. She told Council that the signs will help the Farmers Market fulfill its mission of providing a community gathering place where producers sell directly to consumers, and where consum-

ers can access locally grown and prepared food and hand-made crafts. FYI • The Dripping Springs Farmers Market is held, rain or shine, every Wednesday from 3 pm to 7 pm (or dusk) at the Triangle formed by Highway 290, Ranch Road 12 and Mercer Street – also known as Veterans Memorial Park.
