Festivity of Lights LEAKEY H Don’t miss the 5th Annual Festivity of Lights in Leakey this holiday season. The fun begins with the courthouse lighting Thanksgiving evening at sunset and runs through the third week of January. You’ll be amazed at more than 30,000 lights on the Real County courthouse and grounds brightening the City of Leakey to kick off the holiday season. Entertainment will be provided by local musicians and photo ops abound among the beautiful lights. The annual project includes the installation of commercial lights around the top of the courthouse, lighted wreaths, and lights around beautiful oak trees on the courthouse lawn. Donations from individuals and businesses fund the project, and many volunteers and professional lighting stagers work multiple days on the installation. Downtown and community businesses also take part in the lighting of buildings and property, adding to the beauty and festivity of the holiday season. Leakey Festivity of Lights has a non-profit partnership with Downtown Leakey, Inc., a local 501(c)3 organization. Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 402, Leakey, Texas 78873. LOCAL FAVES Vasquez Restaurant UVALDE H Vasquez Restaurant, known as “The V,” is a go-to destination for freshly made foods using premium ingredients. Stop in to experience the clean and modern environment and taste of family recipes that have served The V well over the generations. This “little restaurant that could” was founded by Jesus and Margarita Vasquez on May 6, 1935, in the 100 block of East Main. The couple had a dream of serving freshly-made food. In 1942, the restaurant moved to 601 West Main Street into a building built by Jesus, a carpenter by trade, and was called the Vasquez Cafe. In 1962, the restaurant (renamed Vasquez Restaurant) moved while the current building was constructed, with a grand opening at the current location on July 17, 1968. Here, operations have continued for 50-plus years. In October 2018, the restaurant was extensively remodeled and reimagined into its current modern space. The

family is proud of what they have accomplished over 87 years in business and are to continue the legacy Jesus and Margarita started. Vasquez Restaurant is at 601 W. Main in Uvalde. Hours are Wednesday to Saturday from 11 am to 8 pm. For information, call 830-278-5112 or visit the website at www.vasquezrestaurant.com. Photos courtesy Vasquez Restaurant.

Created in honor of Wylden Blain Hubbard of Leakey, the youth rodeo offers activities from youth saddle-bronc riding and mutton-busting to bull riding and goat roping. Wylden was taken to be with his Lord and Heavenly Father sooner than expected, but in his 13 years on Earth he left behind a gift to others that will never be forgotten. Proceeds from the annual event go to the Wylden Hubbard Memorial Scholarship Fund given to a local graduating senior who understands and exemplifies the legacy that Wylden left behind. DORA’S NURSERY

H

ill Country folks just love green, growing things. Maybe that’s why they’re here in the first place – tenderly tending gardens, passionately planting attractive, colorful and interesting foliage and even, delightedly diversifying the local flora a bit. It’s just our thing. Well, for the lucky that live in (or visit) Leakey, there’s a likeminded lady that’s into the same who delights in sharing her incredible (admittedly beautiful) bounty that a lifetime of experience and selftaught expertise continues to produce. Meet Dora Trejo, the founding mistress of Dora’s Nursery who, through example and output, endeavors to encourage one and all to “greater greenness.” And, as evidenced throughout Real County (and beyond), she seems to be cultivating quite a following. Ka-bloom! Although the nursery first opened in 2006, Dora’s horticultural roots extend much deeper going back to her home country of El Salvador. Raised in a rural environment, she was taught to appreciate and respect what the land could produce, an attitude she carried with her on her immigration to the United States in the early 1980s. Settling in Leakey with her husband , Isrrael, who initially did ranch work and welding, Dora started out cleaning houses and cabins. But, as before in El Salvador, she always had “growing things” brightening their new home. Later she became a valued employee of the local school district until illness eventually forced her to quit. At a loss and not happy during this difficult time, it was Dora’s daughter Silvia who suggested starting the nursery. She knew of her mother’s exceptional skill with and, love for plants and flowers, and believed that this might provide the solution for restoring happiness within the Trejo household. The first modest retail efforts consisted of displaying potted plants colorfully arranged in their front yard. And, so attractive were the preliminary offerings that it wasn’t long before a trade was established that resulted in Dora’s (and Isrrael’s and Slivia’s) enterprise to quickly blossom! Today, a much-expanded Dora’s Nursery resides on two colorful acres of the family’s property boasting greenhouses and other structures (all built by Isrrael) along with myriad, sectionalized areas each featuring a large selection of native plants and trees, evergreens, succulents, bedding plants, shrubs, herbs, veggies and more – many grown at the nursery. Everything offered is excellent for the Central Texas climate, including staples like Texas Purple Sage, Red Yuccas, Esperanzas, Live Oaks, Red Oaks, Maples, Sycamores and other floral must-haves. When there, be sure and check out the very unique Brazilian Red Cloak plant. Supplementing the living inventory is a large selection of potting soils, organic compost, mulches and fertilizers. And, as an adjunct, Dora also stocks a popular assortment of Mexican pottery and metal art. Taken all together, it’s a wonderful collection of

20

plant and related matter that, as one satisfied customer attests, “really gets the green juices flowing.” Additionally, couple the substantial offerings with Dora’s in-depth knowledge and how-to advice (she is almost always on hand) and, it’s easy to understand why the nursery has so much repeat business – from locals and visitors alike. Lastly, when queried about the success of Dora’s Nursery, the humble proprietress offers, “I believe people enjoy coming because they see the love Isrrael, Silvia and I put into the business.” A love evident in everything growing thing encountered. How neat. Ka-bloom! FYI • Dora’s Nursery is at 1090 S Highway 83 in Leakey. For more information, call 830-232-4122 or find them on Facebook at facebook. com/dorasnursery or on Instagram @dorasnursery. Closed Tuesday but open the other six days from 9 am to 5 pm (open to 4 pm on Sunday).

CONCAN

DID YOU KNOW? ... How Concan got its name

T

heodophilus Watkins first settled at Con Can and built the first log cabin with a chimney in 1862. When a Post Office was to be established in 1880, a name had to be chosen. One story of how the community of Concan got its name goes like this: “The men of the community gathered on Saturday afternoons and played dominoes and ‘coon can,’ a Texas card game. ‘Coon can’ was a variation of ‘Conquian,’ the earliest known rummy game, played since at least the 1880s. When word came that a Post Office was to be located there and a name for the town had to be decided on, the men decided that they would send in ‘Coon Can.’In Washington, no one had heard of such a game or such a word, so they thought the Texans must have misspelled the word and meant Con Can (now spelled Concan).” Story excepted from Lora B. Garrison’s book, “Texas Pioneer Families.”

STATE PARK

G

arner State Park encompasses 1,774 acres and 2.9 miles of beautiful Frio River frontage, including 11 miles of scenic trails. So, whether you’re camping overnight or visiting for the day, with swimming, fishing, biking, geocaching, dancing, hiking, picnicking and so much more, there’s always plenty to do and see. Since the ’40s, folks have been gathering for the familyfriendly jukebox dances at the Garner State Park Pavilion. Dances are Monday through Saturday during Spring Break, and Saturday nights ’til summer. Then in summer, you can enjoy a dance every night of the week, with post-summer dances Saturday evenings. One fun diversion is putt-putt golf at Stinkin’ Sweet Candy Shop and Mini Golf (located at the Park Pavilion), with rentals $5 each ($2 for kids 3 and under) including a putter, ball and 18 holes. Want to go for round two? Play again for only $2 per person — any age. You can golf 7 days a week from 10 am to 10:15 pm through the second week in August, Saturday and Sunday only See GARNER SP, page 32

Garner State Park Song

GARNER SP, from page 30

In the Western part of Texas ninety miles from San Antone, there’s a place I go each summer when I get the urge to roam. I’d stand out on the highway, if I couldn’t get a ride I’d walk to Garner State Park. There’s the cutest girls from Texas and from everywhere. They trade their city slickin’ clothes for some boots and western wear. We swam all through the day and we danced when it got dark at Garner State Park. She was the cutest girl around. We walked down to the water found a big rock, began to talk at Garner State Park. Next thing I knew it was 4 a.m. She said my mother’s surely worried about where I am and with the Texas sky above, we couldn’t help but fall in love at Garner State Park. Well, the summer it was over and we had to say goodbye. We said we’d see each other next year, as a tear fell from her eye. When I came I knew no sorrow; now I’m leaving with a broken heart at Garner State Park. Oh, but I’ll be back again next year...

RIO FRIO

Landmark Oak Tree

The Rio Frio Landmark Oak, State Champion (Texas Escarpment Live Oak Tree 1988) stands on the east side of the Frio River on Farm Road 1120. According to the marker at the site, the “mighty oak served as a social, religious, educational and political gathering place for early settlers. During the early 1870’s, a school house was built just west of the tree. It was constructed of native Cypress lumber and its walls were filled with caliche. Between 1880-1891, N.M.C. Patterson laid out the town of Rio Frio using the tree and schoolhouse mountain to the east as bearing points.” Photo by Bailey Photography, courtesy Women Who Wander.

rom March through September on a ranch near Concan, you can watch in delight as 10- to 12-million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from Frio Cave at Frio Bat Flight. The beautiful and private 10,000-acre property on which the cave is located has been continuously owned by the same family since 1874. Bain and Kirstin Walker run Frio Bat Flight tours, each season hosting a whopping 3,000 to 4,000 visitors, all who come to see the second largest bat population in the world (that’s open to the public). Bain takes questions from audience members as the crowd waits in anticipation for the bats to begin emerging from the cave about 30 minutes before sunset. These bats will travel up to 35 miles from the cave every night, covering several hundred miles in one evening. They are insectivores, preferring to dine on agricultural pests.“Scientists have discovered the bats eat, on average, their body weight nightly. That amounts to about 100 tons of insects a year!” says Bain. FYI • Bats emerge from Frio Cave March through September. Frio Bat Flight entry is $12; $10 for kids 10 and

Welcome to the Hill Country River Region 2022

The history, folklore, legends and natural history of the Southern Hill Country is a rough blend of frontier hardship, country wisdom and tough personal experience. These volumes are based on numerous interviews of the area’s elders and presented in their own words, along with photos, maps and sketches. The story of this region is worth knowing, for it illustrates much of what makes Texas a special place.

“These books of interviews with old-timers of the Sabinal Canyon are models of what such works should be.” — John Graves, The Rivers of Texas (2002)

BY ROB MCCORKLE Texas Parks & Wildlife Department

T

he Sabinal River and its several tributaries have carved limestone canyons through the nearly 3,000-acre park straddling Bandera and Real counties at the western fringes of the Edwards Plateau. Here, the canyons’ moist, cool microclimates support a remarkable diversity of plant life found few other places in Texas. The bigtooth maple tree ranks as the park’s marquee species. In late autumn most years, the stands of old-growth maples set the canyons ablaze in a riot of red, orange and gold foliage, drawing upwards of 50,000 leaf-peepers to the state natural area.

The western cousin of the eastern sugar maple retained a foothold in the Hill Country canyons after vast sheets of ice advanced southward across North America almost to present-day Texas, and then retreated. (For an explanation of the park’s geological history and information about the bigtooth maple and other indigenous p l a n t species, visit the exhibit hall in the park headquarters.) Lost Maples State Natural Area is home to the state’s largest known species of the bigtooth, also known as the Uvalde bigtooth maple and canyon maple. The 40-foot tall maple with a 45-foot crown spread stands at the head of the park’s most popular trail, the .8-mile Maple Trail, just a few steps from the day-use area parking lot. However, to really appreciate this wondrous arboretum, visitors should park their vehicle and stroll the wooded canyon trails that traverse the upland canyons of the Sabinal River, as well as Can, Hale Hollow and Lane creeks. But no matter the time of year, Lost Maples SNA makes a worthwhile destination that will not disappoint. Visitors hoping to enjoy the park under less crowded conditions of late October and early November when the maples’ color peaks should consider an early fall visit. Nights tend to cool off and during warm, sunny days, the waters of the Sabinal and spring-fed swimming holes prove tempting spots to take a soothing splash. Almost 11 miles of well-marked trails lead to scenic overlooks, spring-fed ponds populated by Texas’ state fish, the Guadalupe bass, prime birding habitat and 30 primitive backpack camping sites. Composting toilets near several backcountry campsites make the wilderness experience a bit more pleasant. See LOST MAPLES, page 60

The Maple Trail provides the easiest access to the park’s natural wonders, traversing mostly flat terrain through a moist, shaded Sabinal River canyon. Mature bigtooths share fertile canyon habitat with monstrous chinkapin and Lacey’s oaks, Florida basswood, pecan, black willow, green ash and American sycamore. Boulders the size of a subcompact car sit in the middle of the river and at the base of soaring limestone cliffs. Because of the canyonlands’ microclimate effect, the park contains numerous species of plants and animals of both eastern and western affinity, as well as rare species endemic to the Balcones Escarpment. Found here are the unusual Texas madrone tree, three kinds of buckeye, witch hazel (common in Mississippi), six different kinds of oaks, Texas mock orange and sycamore-leaf snowbell whose white clusters of flowers bloom in late September. The park’s birdlife reflects Lost Maples’ location in the North America’s central flyway, as well as its diversity of habitat that includes grasslands and scrublands; mixed evergreen and deciduous escarpment woodlands; and streamside woodlands. Birders from around the world visit the park to catch a glimpse of the endangered golden-cheeked warbler and black-capped vireo, as well as specialty birds such as the green kingfisher and zone-tailed hawk. Water-and-electric campsites are at a premium at Lost Maples SNA. The 30 campsites, which also feature in-ground barbecue pits and shaded picnic tables, book up to five months in advance for the peak fall foliage period. Other times of the year, booking reservations early is recommended. In keeping with Lost Maples’ state natural area designation, the park has limited development and facilities. However, young and old alike can enjoy nature photography, hiking, camping, bird watching, backpacking, fishing and swimming. Photos courtesy Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. FYI • The day use-only park entry fees for persons 13 and older are $6. You can pre-pay entrance a month ahead of your date of arrival to assure entrance during busy seasons. Hike-in campsites are $10 a night and water-electric sites are $20. Lost Maples State Natural Area is located about an hour’s drive southwest of Kerrville and five miles north of Vanderpool on Ranch Road 187. Parking at Lost Maples State Natural Area is limited to 250 cars, so schedule fall trips during the weekdays, if possible. All reservations should be paid in full at the time they are made.

SABINAL Canyon BY GREG WALTON

T

... a treasure in the Texas Hill Country

he Sabinal River Canyon, like many of the river canyons of the Southern Edwards Plateau, is a beautiful and unique place. It lies along the southern edge of the Texas Hill Country, in the transition zone between the Edwards Plateau to the north and the South Texas Plain to the south. Topographically, one could consider the Edwards Plateau to be the southern edge of the Great Plains. Limestone is brittle stuff, and when the Balcones Escarpment was formed, the uplifted edges splintered and quickly began to erode, creating hills, ridges and deep canyons. It has been suggested by some that the Texas Hill Country could more accurately be named the Texas Canyon Country. Much of what we assume to be upthrust hills are in fact uneroded fragments of the Edwards Plateau, long limestone ramparts reaching south before they disappear entirely. It is the canyons which represent dramatic geological processes, not the “hills.” Underground streams soon found their way to the surface, creating springs and rivers. In this way the watersheds of the Devil’s, Nueces, Frio, Sabinal, Medina and Guadalupe Rivers were formed. Moisture from the Gulf, encountering the Escarpment, is sent skyward, only to return as torrential rainstorms. The canyons themselves developed steep sides and a flat fertile bottom generally on a north/south axis. The land in the Sabinal Canyon is broken into medium and small-scale agriculture operations and undisturbed woodland pastures. Many old ranches are still in the hands of families who originally settled them. Hub Thompson (1901-1991) whose grandparents were the first white family in all of the Southern Hill Country, recounts, “To settle this part of Texas all you had to do was fight the Comanche, the bears and the wolves, survive the floods and outlast the droughts, and the land was yours”. As in many small communities in Texas, the people here, the history and the natural environment are inextricably bound together. We who know this land, most of us anyway, recognize that we are not the first culture here, and we won’t be the last. For 20,000 years or more native people explored these same canyons and streams, hilltops and springs. They hunted and fished and cherished this area as we do today. They left middens, cook stoves, tools, weapons, bones and skeletons behind, as they made their homes here. No doubt they admired the trees and river, the sunsets and serenity we too appreciate. Likely it was as sacred to them as it is to us. We carry that knowledge with us, and it becomes yet another reason for protecting and preserving this landscape. The most remarkable tree here, though, and the one for which the river was named, is the bald cypress (taxodium distichum), or “Sabinal” in Spanish.

Welcome to the Hill Country River Region 2022

As the early Spanish explorers made their way east across Texas in the sixteenth century, they named each of the rivers and creeks for its dominant feature. The Nueces was named for the abundant nut (pecan) trees, the Frio for its cold, spring water. Further east one finds Seco (Dry) Creek and then Hondo (Deep) Creek. The Sabinal River was named for the large stands of bald cypress. In the Spanish language an individual cypress tree might be called a sabino, but when one is referring to a large group of them the Spanish language attaches an “al” to the end of the word, converting Sabino into Sabinal. The bald cypress is the tallest tree See SABINAL CANYON, page 64

species in Texas (some specimens are up to 130 feet high), the oldest tree in Texas (some exceed 2,000 years old), and the oldest species of tree in Texas (going back to the Pleistocene Era, when dinosaurs roamed what is now Texas.) Their closest relatives are the redwood and sequoia of California. Uncommonly, they are both deciduous and coniferous. Along the Sabinal, one finds innumerable stretches of crystalclear water, deep turquoise waterholes and cypress. Everywhere are cypress, in all configurations. It is not uncommon to find cypress along the river in excess of 1,500 or even 2,000 years old. Their tall gray-white trunks remind us of columns in an Old World cathedral.

The cypress cathedrals, like those of their tree cousins, the redwood and sequoia, give one a sense that the Creator dwells here. Roy Walton (1903-1995) was born along the Sabinal. He said, “It is easy to see that God did some of his finest handiwork here.” Some of these trees stand tall and erect, six and even eight feet in diameter, giants among their own kind. Some are long and slim, leaning out over the water, creating long green tunnels in the summertime. Some, even large trees, lean downstream, survivors of innumerable floods over the centuries. The Sabinal Canyon, like the canyons of the Nueces, Frio, Medina and Guadalupe, is a unique place worth protecting.

Riding the Three

A

lthough the list of Hill Country roads is long, many motorcyclists claim The Three Sisters as their favorite ride. This trio of Ranch Roads—337, 336, and 335—is located in the southern portion of the Edwards Plateau.Whether you travel on two wheels or four, you should make it a point to get out and experience this amazing drive. As Ranch Road 337 departs Medina, it becomes a roller coaster ride. Shallow creeks tell long-forgotten tales of times when they carved through now-exposed limestone bluffs. Stately ranch houses cling to mountain tops, commanding some of the best views in Texas. The hills become dotted with maple trees as the road approaches Vanderpool. These and other deciduous trees make nearby Lost Maples State Natural Area a “must see” destination in the fall. The highway makes a long, steep climb out of Vanderpool. For the next few miles, the road narrows and weaves through sheer canyon cuts, offering slow curves with dramatic drop-offs to the valleys below. This is the “real” Texas Hill Country. The approach to Leakey crosses the Frio River. Motorcyclists congregate at the Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop and Bent Rim Grill, but the hangout is open to all visitors. Some travelers may turn south in Leakey on US Highway 83, toward Garner State Park and Concan. North of the courthouse in Leakey, Ranch Road 336 splits off and parallels the upper Frio River. This beautiful road makes sharp curves and steep mountain climbs before breaking onto

Sisters BY TOM WILEY

a dry plateau near its terminus with Texas Highway 41. A favorite stop in the area is the Garven Store, just north of Highway 41 on US 83. There, you can load up on several varieties of jerky; sample one of their home-recipe sausage wraps; or sit out on the deck with a cold beverage. You can continue on Ranch Road 337 west from Leakey towards the small communities of Camp Wood and Barksdale. From Barksdale, Ranch Road 335 travels 30 miles north, tracing an upper arm of the Nueces River. This route sees little traffic and, yet, offers some incredible views before also “T-ing” into Highway 41. Hill Country travelers who have never visited this part of the state are always amazed at the scenery they have been missing. The remoteness of this area makes the winding roads and distant vistas even more special. Other highways tap into The Three Sisters and provide access to Bandera, Utopia, Concan, Rocksprings, and other popular tourist destinations. B&Bs, country cabins, and quaint inns provide opportunities to escape the work week and dangle toes in chilled streams or hike hills teeming with wildlife. And if the question comes up about where to eat, just follow the motorcycles!

Welcome to the Hill Country River Region 2022

he Nueces Canyon area is part of the region known as the “Land of 1,100 Springs” featuring the headwaters of the Nueces River, one of Texas’ clearest streams, fed by the many springs and creeks. Here, you are always moments away from a favorite swimming or fishing hole. Alonso De Leon named the canyon’s river Rio las Nueces, the “River of Nuts,” after the abundant pecan trees growing along its banks. Year-round activities in the beautiful Nueces Canyon make this area a major travel destination. The Canyon covers portions of Real, Edwards, and Uvalde counties along Texas Highway 55 and Ranch Road 335 on the western fringe of the Texas Hill Country. The Nueces Canyon is a travel hub to many nearby attractions such as the Briscoe–Garner Museum and historic Janie Slaughter Briscoe Opera House in Uvalde, Garner State Park in Concan which hosts a dance tradition that started in 1941, and Lost Maples State Natural Area near Vanderpool with hiking, birding, photography, and nature study opportunities. The Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area in Rocksprings boasts Mexican free-tailed bat emergence tours during summer mornings and evenings. Kickapoo Cavern See NUECES CANYON, page 75

State Park is located near Brackettville. In Camp Wood, you will find Charles Lindberg Park and Mission San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz State Historic and National Historic site. Fly-fishing the Nueces River may yield the native Guadalupe bass, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, or pan fish such as the Rio Grande perch, rock bass, redbreast sunfish, and green sunfish. Floating, kayaking, and canoeing are enjoyed year-round. The Nueces Canyon also boasts rare native flora and fauna species. The Coppery Dancer and Comanche Dancer damselfly’s U.S. range is limited to a handful of Hill Country areas. Since their prime nesting grounds are on the Edwards Plateau, the endangered

black-capped vireo and golden-cheeked warbler can be viewed here. The threatened Texas snowbells, Texas wild rice, Tobusch fishhook cactus, Rock quillwort, and the delicate Basin bellflower are Hill Country inhabitants. Historical markers are located in Montell, Camp Wood, Barksdale, and Vance. This area was formerly the territory of Comanche and Lipan-Apache tribes and prehistoric civilizations. The area is rich in fossils and Native American artifacts. The marker for San Lorenzo De La Santa Cruz Mission, founded by the Franciscan missionaries in 1762, is in the Nueces Canyon next to the town of Camp Wood. No buildings remain standing at the site, but wall foundations are visible, and five interpretive signs and paved walking tour available. In June of 2017 and 2018, Texas Tech University and Texas Archeology Society excavated the mission site. The elevations of the Hill Country range from 500 to 2,250 feet above sea level. The karst topography is reminiscent of France, Andalusia, and Ireland’s west coast. Agate jasper, cinnabar, fluorite, topaz, calcite, opal, petrified wood, and tektites are stones that are commonly collected by lapidarian enthusiasts visiting Texas and are used in jewelry making, art pieces, and stained glass designs by local canyon artisans. The limestone deposits of Central Texas and the Edwards Plateau are good locations to search for calcite-filled geodes. Biface prehistoric tools are often found in caches in this region. Edwards Plateau chert is abundant. You may even find an antler remnant used as a soft hammer in flint knapping. See NUECES CANYON, page 78

The Hundred Mile Loop encompasses rolling hills, steep cliffs, breathtaking drop-offs, multiple serpentine curves, and serene valley views along Ranch Roads 335, 336, and 337 which have made the Three Sisters a must-see destination for motoring and cycling enthusiasts. Ride Texas magazine voted Ranch Road 337 the “number one road to ride in Texas” and the Nueces Canyon area as the third most popular motorcycle ride in the state. For the same reasons, the Nueces Canyon is a favored area of bicycling enthusiasts, and is an official part of the Southern Tier 4 bicycle route. The Hill Country is known as the cycling capital of Texas, and its gorgeous scenery and challenging terrain provide for excellent cycling. The area is steeped in a rich history of sheep and goat ranching. Local artisans still produce mohair textiles recognized internationally. Some of the best exotic and native species game hunting in the state can be found in the Nueces Canyon. Whitetail deer, angora, bobcat, red stag, fallow deer, puma, javelina, Russian boar, axis deer, black buck antelope, aoudad, and Rio Grande turkeys roam the canyon. Local grocers and merchants have some of the tastiest native and exotic jerky and cuts of meat you have ever basted, roasted, barbequed, or tasted. Whether your Nueces Canyon destination is Barksdale, Camp Wood, Montell, or Vance, we are sure you will find the perfect Hill Country hideaway, adventure, restaurant delight, and a Texas-sized warm welcome. The Great Hill Country Pumpkin Patch MEDINA H The Great Hill Country Pumpkin Patch is designed to both entertain and educate children, and has been consistently voted one of the top Pumpkin Patches in Texas. Love Creek Orchards — pioneers of the Texas Apple industry — hosts the event each October for 26 years. Nestled in the heart of the Hill Country in Medina on Highway 16 North, Love Creek is the perfect setting for a children’s festival. The event includes hayrides, scarecrow building, pumpkin painting, pony rides, games and photo opportunities, plus a petting zoo, apple orchard tours, cider making and processing apples on the apple line and more. “We want children to experience a day on the farm and fun, says owner Bryan Hutzler. “But we want to make it a learning experience as well. What a great way to learn about agriculture and how apples are grown and harvested.” It’s pure family fun, featuring pig races, storytelling and playing an instrument in the Great Hill Country Symphony. You can bring a picnic lunch or enjoy food from onsite vendors, offering hot dogs, hamburgers, apple pie, pumpkin pie, apple ice cream and of course, fresh squeezed apple cider. You’ll also find a huge largest variety of pumpkins, gourds, hay bales, corn stalks and squash available to purchase. The Great Hill Country Pumpkin Patch opens on October 5 and is open every Saturday, Sunday, and Monday in October from 10 am to 4 pm. Admission is $7, and includes free hayrides, petting zoo, pumpkin painting (you buy the pumpkin and paint is provided), tours and entertainment.
