he Hill Country Sun first shared Jared Paul Wilson’s inspiring story in early 2013. At that time, the accomplished 31-year-old, even though recently challenged by serious illness, had already established a (justifiably-earned) reputation as one of Texas’ premier Western artists whose compelling works rendered in an exacting photo-realistic style not only convey the natural beauty of his beloved native state but, on a more sublime level also seem to, emotionally, hint at something spiritual, perhaps even secret but, above all truly wonderful. Since that initial introduction, young Jared, in spite of a secondary health crisis, has remarkably continued to accomplish, grow, learn, communicate and, of course, create as only he can by expanding into alternate mediums that build on (and complement) his outstanding studio work. Fired by his deep commitment to others, this faith-driven, yet appreciative, artist, author, actor and more is now able to share his God-given talents and blessings with an ever larger, eagerly receptive audience. Born in 1981 and raised in and around Dallas to an old-school Baptist preacher of modest means, an alwayscurious Jared grew up in a loving environment where he was encouraged to explore the natural world around him. And, after these many explorations, the youngster would invariably retreat indoors where, as he recalls, “With pencil and pad, I attempted to put on paper everything I encountered.” While wildlife themes generally took precedence, sometimes these “doodles” evolved into entertaining and adventurous “picture stories” that would include such famous Texan icons as Sam Houston, Davy Crockett and others – basically, storybooks. In high school, a pair of Jared’s teachers recognized and responded to this rare

Determined to teach, nurture and encourage the eager teen, technical skills were imparted that further enhanced his natural talents. His work grew steadily in competency and sophistication, so much so that, after graduation, Jared received a full academic scholarship in art to Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls. Earning his bachelor of fine arts degree with a certification to teach, Jared found himself ready to joyfully embark upon a career built around what he most loved to do – create. Blessed with so much innate ability, after a seven-year stint as a high school teacher, Jared decided to “turn pro.” This was a little frightening because, a few years earlier, (a now newly-wedded and soon-to-be father) Jared was ironically stricken with cancer of the eye. While successfully “beating” the disease, it was his employment within the school district that ensured on-going health coverage. On his own, acquisition might be difficult. But he followed his heart, and within a year and a half as a full-time professionSee JARED PAUL WILSON, page 5

he Blair House Inn presents the “2015 Vintner Dinner Series” the weekends of January 31, February 7, 21, and 28 —an opportunity to enjoy local wines and learn about the vintner’s wine making process, all while savoring a five-course gourmet meal prepared by Chef Maher. This year marks the 14th annual series, although it will be the first for new owners, Chris and Lois Mahoney, who purchased the Blair House Inn in July 2014. “This has been a lifelong dream of

Lois’ to own an inn,” explains Chris. The couple searched for the perfect property to fulfill that dream for 10 years before finding the tranquil retreat on Spoke Hill, the perfect fit to draw them to Wimberley from the Dallas area. Chris says very little has changed around the Blair House Inn since he and Lois took over, aside from the arrival of executive chef and instructor Chef Brian Maher. Creek in Dallas, and Julia Child’s Kitchen in Napa Valley. The February 7 Vintner’s Dinner features wine from Bell Springs Winery paired with Chef Maher’s gourmet Country French cuisine. There is no vintner dinner planned Valentine’s Day weekend. “We’re known for romantic getaways, so everything we do revolves around that focus,” explains Chris. “We have romance packages, various things to enhance the romantic getaway experience.” These include flowers, champagne, even picnic baskets, year-round. “We have ways to make it really special for couples. At a lot of nice hotels, you get a chocolate on your pillow. Our version of that, we call it ‘turndown.’ We give you a glass of wine and a piece of dessert.” Chris laughs, and adds, “It’s popular.” The Vintner series resumes February 21, featuring Dry Comal Creek Vineyards and gourmet Cajun cuisine. February 28, enjoy wine from Stone House Vineyards, which Chef Maher will pair with mouth watering, gourmet Italian cuisine. Each Vintner Dinner consists of five gourmet courses. The evening begins with wine at 7 pm, followed by a fun and informative discussion by the evening’s featured vintner beginning promptly at 7:15 pm. Each vintner will showcase three wines, switching wines before the salad and again before the entree. The Vintner Series has proven a great partnership between local wine makers and inn. “The feedback I’ve gotten is that the guests really like it,” Chris shares. Chris says he and Lois are thrilled to be living their lifelong dream, and are excited to be taking part in this favorite Blair House Inn tradition. The Blair House Inn is a popular place for couples celebrating anniversaries, birthdays and special occasions. Chris says, “It’s not unusual to have a quarter of the (dining) room be on a wedding anniversary. It’s a romantic, intimate setting. We make it fun. We recognize special occasions.” Chef Maher is accustomed to working with those who have dietary restrictions or intolerances, so don’t let gluten or lactose restrictions hold you back. In addition to fine dining, the Blair House Inn also offers a perfect Hill Country getaway. The property sits on 22 tranquil acres on Spoke Hill and boasts a nature trail, two ponds, abundant wildlife, a swimming pool and day spa, along with 12 cottages and rooms. “We’ve got a lot of nice, peaceful places to sit and enjoy the scenery, enjoy See BLAIR HOUSE INN, page 5

Hill Country Science Mill’s grand opening February 14

I

By Laurel Robertson

t’s been a place of innovation since the 1880s—first as an Industrial Era steam grist mill and cotton gin. A century later, it became a restaurant and entertainment complex, catering to tourists on the new Texas Wine Trail. But innovations like these—glowing silicone fractals, video games replicating molecule creation and a hands-on biology lab growing bacteria that can power batteries—mark a new high for the old gristmill in Johnson City. February 14, prepare to fall in love with science at the Hill Country Science Mill’s Grand Opening. The entire family will be entertained with activities that engage them in interactive learning and creative thinking. While many hands-on science centers are geared for the elementary age group, the majority of the Hill Country Science Mill’s exhibits are targeted for middle and high school students—to help expand their understanding of science, spark their curiosity and inspire them to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. Each exhibit includes career-oriented information describing what field of science or technology engages in that kind of activity. At the beginning of their Science Mill experience, visitors receive a passport and create a personalized, animated 3-D avatar that serves as their tour guide through the exhibits. The QR code on their passport keeps track of their day’s experience—progress, favorite exhibits, etc, so they can revisit those experiences online and learn more about them in the days and weeks following. A Paludarium (an enclosed, self-sustaining ecosystem, much like a large ter-

rarium) in the lobby was created by a designer from Buda that makes similar installations for museums world-wide. The mill’s original grain silos have been converted into unique exhibits that make use of their height and roundness. In one silo, a 36-foot tall LED board reacts to electromagnetic waves (like those generated from a cell phone), creating a light display. The only other board of its kind is in Slovenia—as an art display there. A second silo is lined in limestone rocks and places the visitor deep in an imaginary Edwards Aquifer well. Computer screens on the wall display footage shot underwater at Jacob’s Well Natural Area and the personal avatars teach about water quality, conservation, and the life cycle of a raindrop. A third silo explores the intersection of math, science and art in a stunning exhibition of brightly-lit silicone fractals (in the shape of Romanesco broccoli) that demonstrates the Fibonacci sequence. There’s a 3-D sandbox, with topographic lines projected on the sand that shift as it’s moved and piled. A simulation of rainfall on the sandbox shows the flow and retainment of water by the topography. The Energy Game, sponsored by Pedernales Electric Co-Op, challenges participants to work together to balance an electric grid, supplied by five power sources (nuclear, coal, natural gas, solar and wind) as it goes through typical daily variations in power needs. A biology lab, under the supervision of science director Bob Elde, is currently experimenting with zebra fish and a variety of microorganisms grown in cultured pond mud. Other exhibits include a virtual human body that can be explored using sciSee SCIENCE MILL, page 7

A three-dimensional sandbox exhibit has topographic lines projected from above. As you change the shape of the sand, the topographic lines adjust. Then, you can watch as a computer simulates rainfall on the terrain and see how the watershed functions. Photo by Jeanine Christensen.

Johnson City High School art students created a mixed-media mural next to the race track, where visitors can build, test and solve problems to create the fastest auto. A second wing of the facility houses exhibits more accessible to a younger set, including a magnetic wall with moveable ping-pong ball chutes, a play area for toddlers and a 3-D movie theater showing 20-minute videos. There’s also the Lady Bird Lane Cafe with indoor and outdoor eating areas. The Science Mill’s CEO and founder, Bonnie Baskin, a retired scientist and entrepreneur, believes it’s critical to build STEM skills in youth, leading to higher education in STEM-related fields. “Bonnie is someone who does things,” says Science Mill Executive Director Renee Williams. When a friend pointed out the old mill was for sale, Bonnie began envisioning what could be created in it. In October 2012, her newly-formed non-profit 501(c)(3) organization purchased the old mill and set a goal of “igniting the curiosity, ambition, innovation and problem-solving potential of the next generation through an innovative, immersive experience that enhances the community’s understanding of and appreciation for STEM.” At its Grand Opening, the Science Mill will host a day-long carnival of hands-on science fun including mad scientist face painting, Doctor Kold and his freezing science experiments, science from Bamburger Ranch Preserve, a performance by Bobby Flores and the Yellow Rose Band and more. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Science Mill’s Scholarship Program. The Science Mill is funded solely by grants from private foundations, corpo-

rations and individuals. Memberships offering unlimited admission and other benefits are available. A scholarship program helps defray costs for field trip transportation, admission, and enrollment in science programs and camps for qualified students. Skilled volunteers are sought in several areas. FYI • The Hill Country Science Mill’s Grand Opening is February 14, 2015 from 10 am to 6 pm. The Science Mill is located at 101 South Lady Bird Lane in Johnson City. ere’s some artsy news: Texas state parks and VSA Texas, the state organization on arts and disability, have partnered to host arts workshops in state parks this month “State parks across Texas are wonderful places to inspire the artist in each of us,” says Chris Holmes, director of interpretive services for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. “We developed some non-traditional programs to pique the interest of both frequent and new visitors who typically wouldn’t visit state parks.” In the Texas Hill Country, we will have arts workshops at Inks Lake, Government Canyon, and McKinney Falls state parks. All workshops are free with park admission, but some require prior registration. Native Fibers, February 14 and 28, 1-3 pm At Inks Lake State Park, learn techniques of hand paper-making using a portable Hollander beater attached to a bicycle. Learn about native and non-native plants of the region while pedaling your way into the creative arts. Open to first 30 participants (children and adults). Register by contacting Inks Lake State Park headquarters at 512-793-2223, ext. 6. Malachi Muncy will teach the course. Mandalas in the Park, February 1 and 22, 11 am-2 pm At Government Canyon State Natural Area, create a group mandala using found objects from nature in the surrounding environment. Biodegradable materials allows artwork to blend into landscape. Bring local sticks, branches, rocks, acorns. Open to first 20 children and adults. Register by calling Niki Lake at 210688-9055, ext. 292 or niki.lake@tpwd.texas. gov. Workshop led by Salina Loriaux. When Nature Sings, February 7 and 21, 2-4 pm. At McKinney Falls State Park amphitheater, learn about indigenous Taino spirituality through inspirational anecdotes, role playing, music making featuring native flute. Open to children and adults, and led by Tekina-eirú, proud blood descendent of the native Tainos of Puerto Rico. No registration required. The arts workshops are being offered in wheelchair accessible locations. To request further accommodations, please contact the park at least two weeks prior to the workshop. Texas Master Naturalist Classes And what about this? Have you ever wanted to know more about nature and its flora and fauna? Several Hill Country chapters of the Texas Master Naturalist program will start classes that run through the spring and summer months for volunteers wanting to learn about natural resource management and do some local

volunteering. Volunteers will receive a minimum of 40 hours training from educators and specialists from universities, natural resource agencies, nature centers, and museums on a variety of topics, including interpretation and management of natural resources, ecological concepts, eco-regions in Texas, and natural systems management. Graduates are asked to provide 40 hours of service a year in community education, demonstration, and habitat enhancement projects to maintain certification as a Texas Master Naturalist. Georgetown, Good Water Chapter Training begins March 3, ends May 12, register before February 17, classes Tuesdays 1-5 pm with some Saturday field trips, email Wayne Rhoden at mgardener@suddenlink.net, www.txmn.org/goodwater. Marble Falls, Highland Lakes Chapter Spring training February 26-May 14, Thursday classes, fee of $140, contact Melanie Huff at amhuff@281.com, txmn.org/ highlandlakes/. San Antonio, Alamo Area Chapter Session February 19-April 25, Thursday classes 5-9 pm and four Saturday field trips, contact Pamela Ball at pball12@satx.rr.com or http://txmn.org/alamo/. San Marcos, Hays County Chapter Session February 10-October 13, Tuesday evenings 6-9:30 pm and two Saturday mornings, haysmn.org or Dick McBride at 512-749-1055, docdik@grandecom.net. Local Grants for Community Parks And some really good news for local parks: Last month Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved $8 million in competitive grant funds for community parks, funding 25 of 55 proposed projects, including several in the Hill Country. The grants are funded by sales tax on sporting goods and offshore gas royalties. In the Austin area, Colony District Park in East Austin will be upgraded with trails, ball fields, a pavilion, and picnic tables; Lakewood Community Park in Leander will acquire 125.4 acres, a nature trail, backstops, pavilion, picnic tables, benches, canoe and kayak launch, fishing pier, and a dedicated open space; the city of Troy will develop Trojan Park with a splash pad, shade structure, benches, and walkways. In the San Antonio area, the San Antonio Botanical Garden will be further developed with nature play elements, a restroom and concessions building, and interpretive signs; the city of Uvalde will be able to renovate an existing swimming pool with pool decking and landscaping. Alrighty then, art in nature, people in nature, and getting more people out into nature. Parks. It’s where nature is.
