Fall family fun at Great Hill Country Pumpkin Patch

t’s that time of year again, when the Hill Country begins to change colors marking the beginning of the fall season. Maple trees, cooler weather and bright orange pumpkins are a sure sign fall is here, and nobody celebrates the season better than Medina’s Love Creek Orchards— home of the Great Hill Country Pumpkin Patch Saturdays, Sundays and Monday October 1-31. Love Creek Orchards —pioneers of the Texas apple industry — has been hosting the Pumpkin Patch for 24 years. Nestled in the heart of the Hill Country on Highway 16 North in Medina, Love Creek Orchards is a perfect setting for

the fun family festival, designed to both entertain and educate children at the same time. The Great Hill Country Pumpkin Patch and was voted one of the top pumpkin patches in Texas in 2015. Guests enjoy hayrides, scarecrow building, pumpkin painting, pony rides, games and photo opportunities, plus a petting zoo, hay maze, apple orchard tours, cider making, even processing apples on the apple line. 17th Annual Texas Furniture Makers Show

he American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language defines furniture as “The movable articles in a room that render it fit for living or working.” That’s fine as far as it goes. What the definition lacks, however, is the explanation that, with creativity, craftsmanship and considerable skill, furniture can become much more than simply a “movable article.” It can be art. And, for those who require proof, the

upcoming 17th Annual Texas Furniture Makers Show in Kerrville has got it by the roomful, but be prepared to be amazed and come early if you want to get “the best seat in the house.” Co-sponsored by the Kerr Arts and Cultural Center (KACC), a non-profit organization devoted to the promotion and practice of the arts and WOODCRAFT®, the show has proven to be an yearly hit with state’s finest custom furniture makers and those seeking that “something special” for the home or office.

expecting even bigger numbers. But, what’s even neater for shoppers (and the makers) is the ability to place, directly, additional orders for custom furniture.” The 2016 event will showcase the talents of up to 40 of Texas’ most capable craftsmen sharing 40 to 60 of their best works, many created exclusively for the show. All participants were selected by jury ensuring an extremely high level of quality, technique and diversification. Each entry will be vying for a share of the $8,000 in prize money and merchandise, as well as the coveted “best of show” and/or “best of style” recognition in one of five categories. Items on display range from massive slab dining table to a petite and delightfully delicate writing table. The beautifully crafted rocking chairs are always a favorite of show attendees. Each year there are at least one or two bits of ‘magic’ built into the furniture; a hidden drawer or door that seemingly disappears into nowhere. or the third year in a row, the Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival will rock downtown Dripping Springs with personal performances by some of the nation’s most accomplished songwriters. Festival-goers will have the opportunity to enjoy the talents of dozens of top songwriters performing on six different stages in Dripping Springs’ historic districts – and all for free! Not a big mega-concert, the Songwriters Festival is an up-close and personal chance to see, hear, and get to know some very talented performers who have a deep love for the art of songwriting, says Laurie Halfpenny, festival organizer. “The Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival is all about finely crafted SONGS and the talented folks who write them,” she emphasizes “You may not know their names or faces - but you’ll know their songs,” adds Dave Niemeyer, co-organizer. The Songwriters Festival is quickly becoming a well-known event in national songwriters circles, as well as the Central Texas music scene. In fact, this year’s headliner performance on Saturday night has already sold out, says Jim Halfpenny, a third festival organizer. “We sold out the reserved tickets in eight days,” he marvels, “and the rest of the general admission tickets last month.” But that leaves an entire weekend with 63 shows on six festival stages, Jim points out. He thinks folks should look on the bright side – “Every show is free now!” The three-day musical event starts Friday at 2 pm and continues until 10:45 pm that night at six different venues within safe walking distance of each other on and near Mercer Street. Spectators can stay at one location to hear a dozen performers, or follow a favorite performer around to the other venues, which include The Barber Shop Bar, Mercer Street Dancehall, Mazama Coffee Company, The Mercantile, The Sidecar Tasting Room and Hudson’s on Mercer. Every venue will have food and drink available. Saturday will see a similar game plan, beginning with free shows at Mazama Coffee House at 11 am; the remaining five stages open at 12:30 pm and will continue until 7:30 pm. The Headliner Showcase at 8pm on the Mercer Street Dancehall stage will feature two-time Grammy-winner Rodney Crowell, with Drew Womack opening the show. sk any full-blooded Texan what he or she considers the entertainment essentials for achieving a true “cowboy” experience and the answers will invariably include steaks, steers and two-stepping – usually in that order. Yep pard’ner, in these parts, having a “good time” for the denim-clad, Stetsonwearing set usually starts with a fortifying, perfectly grilled piece of beef, followed by the heated competition that only a world-class, multi-event professional rodeo can provide, then closes with

came obvious to the founding pair that additional opportunity existed. As Yancey recalls, “We initially sold refreshments – beer, sodas and snacks – but folks wanted more and, watching a fast-paced rodeo is hungry work.” Barbecue began being “casually” served and proved to be a natural adjunct to the competition. But Tejas Rodeo’s food story wouldn’t stop there. More on that later. As was mentioned, what’s cowboy entertainment without a little two-stepping? Trey and Yancey also began staging very well-received post-rodeo dances which quickly became “part of the package.” As Trey recalls, “Our admission fee covered both the rodeo and the dance. It was like getting two great things for the price of one. Our guests loved it.” Featuring a variety of local musical talent, couples started packing the initial dance area ultimately requiring the construction of a much larger pavilion – one that today can comfortably accommodate hundreds of twirling twosomes. By 2011, another decision was made to notch up the food service with the establishment of the Tejas Steakhouse and Saloon – a top-tier, sit-down eatery specializing in superior-quality cuts of meat prepared in a variety of mouth-watering ways complemented with delicious sides. Everything is served up in a welcoming setting festooned with myriad historic relics and curiosities from the “Old West.” One particular eye-catcher is the “Yellow Boy” Winchester rifle, a Model 1866 that was manufactured in 1870. But, while the décor is incredible, it’s the beef that keeps patrons coming back. Pets, pranks, pumpkins on the Square this fall WIMBERLEY H Wimberley welcomes fall with a beloved seasonal tradition, as scarecrows and pumpkins decorate the Square the entire month of October. The Wimberley Square offers plenty of unique shopping every day; shops stay open late on Third Thursdays, this month on October 21. Don’t miss the annual WAG (Wimberley Adoption Group & Rescue) Costumed Pet Parade Saturday, October 15, where pets of all kinds are invited and welcome. The fun begins at 10 am at the lower Ozona Bank parking lot. Bring your pet (in costume) to participate, or bring a chair and sit and watch the show. Registration is just $5 per pet, all proceeds benefit WAG. Looking for your own canine companion? Following the parade, WAG hosts its monthly Adoption Day, with plenty of lovable and available rescue dogs looking for a forever home. Scarecrow Invasion, antiques COMFORT H Head to Comfort this month, where you will find plenty of fall fun. October 15-16, enjoy the 30th annual Comfort Village Antiques Show in Comfort Park. There, you can find real antiques — from early country, gardening, architectural, southwestern and Indian to American Oak, stoneware, textiles, baskets and more. Hours are Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. Admission is $5 (good for return visits) and kids 12 and under get in free. Each year, Comfort has an invasion of scarecrows— just in time to deter any marauding blackbirds that might be coming into town to pester visitors attending the annual Comfort Village Fall Antiques Show. The town and surrounding countryside will be filled with scarecrows and fall decorations. Scarecrows start appearing around the first of October, but prime viewing time begins around October 8. Judging of the creations will take place in the middle of October. One of our infamous winning categories is “Only in Comfort” and another is “Best of Invasion.” Watch for these and other award winners!
