Bandera Riverfest, fun on the Medina
S
By Genie Strickland
eventeen years ago, the Bandera Business Association decided to show off one of the city’s best assets — the beautiful Medina River. Bandera Riverfest, the ultimate riverside picnic was born. Bring the family June 28 and experience Riverfest for yourself. This celebration has always been all about the river, so wear your river shoes and swim suit and get ready for the River Rodeo. There’ll be kayak races and a river rescue race. Races are easy to enter and do not require any special equipment— the Bandera River Yacht Club provides the tubes and kayaks. An added attraction...no entry fee is charged for any of the events, aside from adult’s admission into the park. At Riverfest there is something for everyone. You’ll find plenty of games for the kids, arts and crafts, great food and drink and an Open Car Show. Add into this mix the Lone Star BBQ Society’s sanctioned barbecue cook-off and the finals of the Bandera Idol Competition. And don’t forget the live music. There’ll be plenty. Come sit in the shade, enjoy a beer, margarita or lemonade, bring the kids and enjoy. If you find a beach more to your liking, no worries, the Bandera Coastline – graciously donated by Bandera Rock & Road, will be the perfect place for you to unwind. You can come on down for some fun, sun, & sand. With or without the kids, building sandcastles is a fun way to spend the day, and you can grab a shovel and bucket and get creative. The kids will love the giant slip and slide. A highlight of Riverfest is the “Anything That Floats Regatta.” That means every merchant, every sailor worth his

There is no entry fee for the regatta, and no rules except that your entry must float. So decorate up your best row boat, kayak, inner tube, raft, tractor tire tube, stryo-packing material…well you get the picture. If it floats, you can enter it in the parade. And trolling motors are allowed for those not wanting to paddle. Awards in six categories include: Best Business, Best Nonprofit, Best Individual/Family, Best Western Theme, Best Event and Admiral’s Award. FYI • Bandera Riverfest is a great day of familyfriendly fun at the Medina River at Bandera City Park June 28. Gates open at 10 am. Tickets are $10 for adults, guests 55 and older are $5. Children 12 and under get in free, as do active Military (with identification). All riverside games and water activities are absolutely free. Weeklong gathering is deeply rooted in history

hough no Confederate veteran has been there to answer Roll Call in more than 60 years, descendants of soldiers in the War Between the States will still gather—for the 118th year in a row— at Camp Ben McCulloch near Driftwood. They’ll camp under the giant oaks, swim in the deep holes of Onion Creek, share meals, play dominoes and bingo, fiddle and dance at the Camp Ben Reunion in honor of ancestors who fought in a war so long ago. “It’s like a family reunion,” says Sandra Coe, one of the Reunion’s directors. “At least half of the campers are fifth generation and camp in the same spot every year. It’s amazing how many of the adults who attend today were brought to camp as babies and several married couples first met at the Reunion.” Sandra goes on to explain that in the last few years, the group has moved beyond a strictly Confederate focus and has become more of a general community gathering. “Everyone is welcome here,” she stresses. And with an entertainment lineup offering eight live bands in eight days, June 20-27, there’s plenty to show up for. Evening dances will feature the Michael Myers Band, People’s Choice, Hot Texas Swing Band and Keen Country Band and the newly-resurfaced floor of the Dance

Custom coops simplify urban egg production

here’s just nothing like a farmfresh egg. These flavorful, nutritious and oh so edible poultry popouts (directly from of the nest) have been delighting the discriminating diner for millennia in their fried, poached, scrambled, deviled and/or myriad other won-
drous and delicious forms. The problem for many, however, is acquisition. While most of us live in cities, chickens live in the country – right? And, while getting any old egg might not be hard (via the supermarket) getting one collected that morning can See ALL KOOPED UP, page 7

be near on impossible. Enter All Kooped Up, Cathy and Dan Ellenbrook’s exciting new urban coop company that literally brings chicken ranching (with its fabulous fresh egg production) right to the metropolitan homestead. And to citybound egg lovers, that’s nothing to squawk at! The Ellenbrooks, originally hailing from Colorado but, for the past 27 years, residents of the Lake Travis area, have always been nutritionally health-conscious folks – to quote, “We are what we eat.” To that end, personally growing and then consuming good fresh food has always been paramount to this hearty suburban-gardening pair’s lifestyle. But beyond the homegrown tomatoes, cukes, corn and beans, it wasn’t until 2011 that Dan and Cathy hit upon the idea of “keeping chickens” as well. With that in mind, the determined duo began an education process exploring all aspects of the favored fowl including how best to house them. That’s when Dan, an accomplished carpenter and cabinet builder, realized he could construct a custom coop for his backyard that would be better than anything else the market offered – and (for Cathy and the chickens), he could even make it pretty. A year later, Dan’s finished coop resided comfortably in their backyard and was home to five happily laying hens lorded over by one protective rooster. Fresh eggs, naturally lower in cholesterol and higher in several vitamins and omega-3 acids, quickly became a daily staple within the Ellenbrook household. That first coop (which didn’t resemble the traditional at all in design or size) soon garnered lots of positive attention from friends and neighbors – so much so, that the Ellenbrooks realized there might be a demand from other folks who lived on limited acreage but also “had a yen for the yoke.” By 2012, All Kooped Up as a business was born, producing multiple original designs and actively marketing its products to egg-eager customers across the state. Currently, All Kooped Up offers two very affordable models – the omelette house and the soufflé suites – which provide housing for between two to six birds respectively. A new 10-capacity model is also in the works. All are constructed using topgrade materials and engineered for easy maintenance and years of attractive functionality. Some of the models are even designed for backyard mobility with the addition of wheels. Most importantly however, as Dan proudly crows, “Chickens just love ‘em!” Basically, when properly set up, an All Kooped Up coop with its attached run provides a protective and nurturing environment conducive to healthy, happy, egg-producing chickens and that, in turn, as Cathy delightedly clucks, “makes for a very pleased customer.” FYI • For more information about All Kooped Up, its products and pricing, visit the web site at www.allkoopedup.

VALLEY RANCH RETREAT, from page 9 As in the Great Room, the bedroom wing is a blend of ambience and practicality. Each room has a private bath and doors to both the inner hall and a back porch, plus interior walls double insulated for sound. “Some people sew all night long and other retreat organizers will tell you to bring ear plugs,” says Sue, “so I had the bedroom walls double-insulated for that reason.” The 10 bedrooms (four ADA compliant) can accommodate up to 36 guests. Several have three twin beds allowing for more affordable lodging. The walls wear soothing shades of pink, lilac, blue, green, and yellow and the decor is Victorian with shabby-chic accents. Elegant chandeliers beside beds cast a cozy glow into the rooms. Sue scoured estate sales and antique shops to find treasures that fit both her budget and her decorating scheme. “I love iron beds,” she says, “but couldn’t buy 32 iron headboards!” Instead, Sue’s longtime friend, accomplished watercolor artist, JoNell Richardson, painted faux headboards above many of the beds. (JoNell will lead a “Water Color In The Canyon” workshop at Valley Ranch Retreat June 10-13.) The middle wing of the center holds a lounging area, a dining room, and a dream of a kitchen where meals are prepared for groups with overnight stays. Delicious meals, charming rooms, and inspiring views make Valley Ranch Retreat the perfect venue for any organization wanting a memorable getaway.

Photo courtesy Valley Ranch Retreat. “The location is so peaceful and relaxing,” says Carol Steely from Floresville, who’s experienced Valley Ranch Retreat with her quilting group twice this year. “I was able to photograph the sun slowly slipping down behind the hills each evening. We were visited by a small group of deer munching on grass and a jack rabbit outside the sewing room windows. How fun is that!” Soon Sue plans to offer spa services at Valley Ranch. That addition to the center’s amenities might generate yet another slogan: “Peace and Pampering in the Valley.” FYI • Valley Ranch Retreat is located at 105 Mockingbird Lane in Camp Wood.
