arch through September on a ranch near Concan, you can watch in awe as 10- to 12-million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from Frio Cave at Frio Bat Flight. The private 10,000 acre property where the cave is located has been continuously owned by the same family since 1874. Bain and Kirstin Walker run the tours, each season hosting a whopping 3,000 to 4,000 visitors, all who come to see the second largest bat population in the world (that’s open to the public). Bain takes questions from the audience as the crowd waits for the bats to begin emerging from the cave about 30 minutes before sunset. These bats will travel up to 35 miles from the cave every night, covering several hundred miles in one evening. They are insectivores, preferring to dine on agricultural pests. “Scientists have discovered the bats eat, on average, their body weight nightly. That amounts to about 100 tons of insects a year!” says Bain. FYI • Bats emerge from Frio Cave March through September. Frio Bat Flight entry is $12; $10 for kids 10 and under; and $11 for seniors. hen you’re out and about, be sure the Hill Country Nature
Center is on your list of places to visit. Here, you’ll find fossils, arrowheads, and Texas snake, bird, bat, butterfly and insect displays highlighting the natural attractions of the Hill Country River Region. You can even see the happenings inside a bluebird nestbox, thanks to some neat technology.

Perhaps best of all, you’ll find the knowledgeable and friendly LeAnn Sharp, founder of the Hill Country Nature Center, who has for years made it her mission to share the natural wonders of the area with guests and locals alike. It’s a great chance to learn all about birding, bats, native plants, champion trees and the natural history of the area. Hill Country Adventures offers plenty of educational tours. With six past state champions, 11 state champions, and five national champion trees, plus the largest tree in Texas and the oldest tree in Texas, there’s plenty to see on the Champion Big Tree Tour, offered year round. Guided birding and nature tours offer participants a chance to drive to and hike on private Hill Country Ranches and State Parks along the beautiful Frio and Sabinal River Valleys. And, when river conditions are prime you can travel down the Frio River on a guided three- or four-hour Nature By Kayak Tour March through September. The beautiful nature trails at Indian Blanket Ranch (adjacent to the Nature Center) cut through the valleys and hills providing a picturesque path for hiking, jogging and mountain biking. To hike or bike, just check in at the Nature Center. Trails hours are Monday through Friday from 10 am to 6 pm, admission $5 per person for the day. To get an earlier start, call the office at least one day in advance; for weekend reservations, call by Friday. Another attraction at Indian Blanket Ranch is the Bluebird Trail — 30 nestboxes and six viewing stations with benches where you can see small cavity nesters including Eastern Bluebirds, Black-crested Titmouse, Bewick’s Wren, Ash-throated Flycatcher, and Carolina Chickadee with nests, eggs or baby birds. Nestbox Trail Birding Tours are available March through June — advance reservations only. There’s plenty more spectacular birdwatching on the ranch with 126 species of birds sighted — you might see a Golden-cheeked Warbler, Black-capped Vireo, Vermillion Flycatcher, Zone-tailed Hawk, Hummers and more. Bring your camera— photo opportunities abound. Giant oakin Rio Frio The Rio Frio Landmark Oak, State Champion (Texas Escarpment Live Oak Tree 1988) stands on the east side of the Frio River on Farm Road 1120. According to the marker at the site, the “mighty oak served the early settlers as a social, religious, educational and political gathering place. During the early 1870’s, a school house was built just west of the tree. It was constructed of native Cypress lumber and its walls were filled with caliche. Between 1880-1891, N.M.C. Patterson laid out the town of Rio Frio using the tree and schoolhouse mountain to the east as bearing points.” Photo by Melissa Ball

Oh! the tradition of GARNER State Park
G
arner State Park encompasses 1,774 acres and 2.9 miles of beautiful Frio River frontage, including 11 miles of scenic trails. Whether you’re camping overnight or visiting for the day, with swimming, fishing, biking, geocaching, dancing, hiking, picnicking and more, there’s plenty to do and see. Since the ’40s, folks have been gathering for the familyfriendly jukebox dances at the Garner State Park Pavilion. Dances are Monday through Saturday during Spring Break, and Saturday nights ’til summer. Then in summer, you can enjoy a dance every night of the week, with post-summer dances Saturday evenings. One fun diversion is putt-putt golf at Stinkin’ Sweet Candy Shop and Mini Golf (located at the Park Pavilion), with rentals $5 each ($2 for kids 3 and under) including a putter, ball and 18 holes. Want to go for round two? Play again for only $2 per person — any age. You can golf 7 days a week from 10 am to 10:15 pm through the second week in August, Saturday and Sunday only during the off season (closed December through March). See Garner SP, page 22

lm Creek Stables offers trail rides from 9 am to 5 pm. You can take a ride about two miles long with gorgeous trails and great scenery for only $30 per person. Pony rides are available for the younger kids for $10. Adults can also enjoy a High Trail ride (about 2.5 miles) for $45. The stables are extremely busy in summer, so remember to call ahead for a reservation. All proceeds from the trail rides and petting zoo at Elm Creek Stables go to the Frio Canyon Horse Rescue to help with the cost of vet bills and feed. Donations to are welcome, much appreciated and tax deductible.

“a riot of red, orange and gold foliage, drawing upwards of 50,000 leaf-peepers to the state natural area” 34
he Sabinal River and its several tributaries have carved limestone canyons through the nearly 3,000-acre park straddling Bandera and Real counties at the western fringes of the Edwards Plateau. Here, the canyons’ moist, cool microclimates support a remarkable diversity of plant life found few other places in Texas. The bigtooth maple tree ranks as the park’s marquee species. In late autumn most years, the stands of old-growth maples set the canyons ablaze in a riot of red, orange and gold foliage, drawing upwards of 50,000 leaf-peepers to the state natural area. The western cousin of the eastern sugar maple retained a foothold in the Hill Country canyons after vast sheets of ice advanced southward across North America almost to presentday Texas, and then retreated. (For an explanation of the park’s geological history and information about the bigtooth maple and other indigenous plant species, visit the exhibit hall in the park headquarters.)

The park is home to the state’s largest known species of the bigtooth, also known as the Uvalde bigtooth maple and canyon maple. The 40-foot tall maple with a 45-foot crown spread stands at the head of the park’s most popular trail, the .8-mile Maple Trail, just a few steps from the day-use area parking lot. However, to really appreciate this wondrous arboretum, visitors should park their vehicle and stroll the wooded canyon trails that traverse the upland canyons of the Sabinal River, as well as Can, Hale Hollow and Lane creeks. point. Visitors hoping to enjoy the park under less crowded conditions of late October and early November when the maples’ color peaks should consider an early fall visit. Nights tend to cool off and during warm, sunny days, the waters of the Sabinal and spring-fed swimming holes prove tempting spots to take a soothing splash. Almost 11 miles of well-marked trails lead to scenic overlooks, spring-fed ponds populated by Texas’ state fish, the Guadalupe bass, prime birding habitat and 40 primitive backpack camping sites. Composting toilets near several backcountry campsites make the wilderness experience a bit more pleasant.

The Maple Trail provides the easiest access to the park’s natural wonders, traversing mostly flat terrain through a moist, shaded Sabinal River canyon. Mature bigtooths share fertile canyon habitat with monstrous chinkapin and Lacey’s oaks, Florida basswood, pecan, black willow, green ash and American sycamore. Boulders the size of a subcompact car sit in the middle of the river and at the base of soaring limestone cliffs. Because of the canyonlands’ microclimate effect, the park contains numerous species of plants and animals of both eastern and western affinity, as well as rare species endemic to the Balcones Escarpment. Found here are the unusual Texas madrone tree, three kinds of buckeye, witch hazel (common in Mississippi), six different kinds of oaks, Texas mock orange and sycamore-leaf snowbell whose white clusters of flowers bloom in late September. The park’s birdlife reflects Lost Maples’ location in the North America’s central flyway, as well as its diversity of habitat that includes grasslands and scrublands; mixed evergreen and deciduous escarpment woodlands; and streamside woodlands. Birders from around the world visit the park to catch a glimpse of the endangered golden-cheeked warbler and black-capped vireo, as well as specialty birds such as the green kingfisher and zone-tailed hawk. Water-and-electric campsites are at a premium at Lost Maples SNA.The 30 campsites, which also feature in-ground barbecue pits and shaded picnic tables, book up 11 months in advance for the peak fall foliage period. Other times of the year, booking reservations early is recommended. In keeping with Lost Maples’ state natural area designation, the park has limited development and facilities. However, young and old alike can enjoy nature photography, hiking, camping, bird watching, backpacking, fishing and swimming. I remember the day the barn burned
W
hen I was four years old we lived on the ranch near where I live now; 10 miles west of Utopia, Texas. And I was real bad to play with matches. The cowboys would drop their matches around where they were smoking. Since I was small and close to the ground I could see them; so I would pick them up. I always had some matches stashed away somewhere, because I liked to get off by myself and build a fire. Well, this one particularly cold January morning just before my fifth birthday in March, I was still in bed asleep when Mama called me to get up. “Lora B., Lora B., It’s time to get up. We have a lot to do today. You’ve got to get in some wood for me to heat the wash pot.” Oh, how I hated to get out of that nice warm bed, because I knew it was awful cold going across that back porch to get to the kitchen. We had a porch on both sides of the dining room, and the only way to get back to the kitchen was to go across one of these porches. Mama had a big wood stove back there with a fire going in it and biscuits in the oven; so I just made a dash for the kitchen. And Mama was waiting, with my clothes all warmed up by the wood stove. We always had oatmeal and biscuits, every morning. If you have never eaten oatmeal all spooned over your biscuits you don’t know what you are missing. That’s the best stuff in the world. We had oatmeal with fresh rich cream from our cow, Ol’ Bean. The other children had left for school an hour earlier, by horseback. I looked forward to the time when I too would make the five mile ride to the little three-room school house. It was lonely being left at home with no one to play with. Saturday was my favorite day, then I had someone to turn the rope for me to jump and someone to practice yodels with. But it was five more days until Saturday, so I didn’t have anybody to play with. I had a little brother, almost one year old, but he wasn’t big enough to go outside and play yet. So he was there in the baby bed. “Lots of work to do,” Mama told me, “Don’t dawdle, there’s lots of work to be done today.” My job was to carry wood to keep the fire going under the big black iron wash pot, while my mama punched the clothes with an ol’ broom handle and lifted them into the galvanized wash tub, where she would scrub them on the rub board. Mama had all the family laundry sorted out there on the ground, she had a pile of sheets, a pile of colored clothes, a pile of towels, a pile of shirts and everything like that.

I carried in wood for a while until I thought I had about enough wood gathered. Then I lay down on the pile of sheets that were waiting to be washed, watching the sky I tried to find fleecy lambs in the clouds. Well, that was what I was adoing. The sun felt good, but soon I felt cold and moved back near the wash pot to warm myself by the fire, pulling my red coat closer around me and buttoning it up to the collar. I got it new that year for Christmas, not a hand-me-down, and after a week the pride in possessing such a beautiful coat was still fresh. I smiled as I spread my hands across the front and felt the soft fabric. A flock of Canada Geese honked overhead, circling as if they had lost their leader and didn’t know which way to go. As I watched them head off for the south, my mama said, “Sure feels like there is a Blue Norther coming in right on their tails.” The geese slowly disappeared off over the south field where I could see Au¬thur, my oldest brother, plowing with Big Gus our mule pulling. Authur liked to tease and play games with us smaller children. He often carried me around on his shoulders, depositing me on high places. Then, stepping back, he would tell me to jump! I had jumped from just about every high place on the ranch, except the barn and the windmill. He would have had me jump from there too, but Mama wouldn’t let him. She had already told him I was too little to jump from that high up. Papa rode up on his saddle horse; he had been out early checking on the livestock. Mama and Papa discussed the weather, “Well, Mama, looks like we are going to have a mighty cold winter. I expect it’s going to be one of the coldest we’ve had for a long time. Those geese are in a mighty hurry to get where it’s warm.’’ Mama nodded in agreement, “Yeah, I’m thankful we had good crops and See Barn Burned, page 42

Barn Burned ~ from page 40 the barn is full of hay. There will be plenty for the animals to eat.” While they were talking and their attention was on the wash, I wandered off to the barn. Another one of my jobs was to gather eggs. I liked to gather the eggs. When I reached the barn’s big front entry, loose hay was scattered about on the ground where some of the animals had been fed the night before. Gathering up a bunch of hay and placing it in a pile, I reached into my coverall’s pocket to find a match I had hidden there. Of course, matches were forbidden to four-year-olds; but today I thought a little fire to warm my hands by won’t hurt. As the hay burned very hot, I soon became too warm and took my red coat off, hanging it on a nail on the wall. This was a big ol’ barn with an open front on it, and a loft upstairs. I remember it was just full of hay; all the fall crops were stored in it. A brand new Model-T Ford was in there, some horses, cows, chickens and just all kinds of animals. It was a big barn, a big three-story barn with a big loft. Of course, you know, they had been feeding the animals in there, and the hay was just all over the ground. Climbing the stairs to the barn loft I startled a chicken, and she flew from her nest. Leaving that nest full of eggs to collect later, I crawled into a tunnel that went deep into the stacked hay (that was meant as a vent to let the heat out). This was my favorite place to play, a hideaway from the world. The chickens had made nests in the hay tunnel, and I found exactly 14 eggs there. Counting the eggs and playing like it was Easter, time passed quickly, but I had stayed in there for a long time. In a little while, I got too warm and began the crawl back to the opening in the hay; but when I got there, I found fire all around me. The little fire I had left unattended had caught in the scattered hay and now it was filling the barn with flames and smoke. I thought, oh my goodness; I’ve got to get out of here. I tried to go back down the stairs, but I couldn’t get down them. I walked over to the big closed window that was used to hoist the hay up into the loft, and tried to push it open. I was thinking it would be better to jump out and break my neck when I hit the ground than to stay here and burn up alive. I knew it would be bad to burn up alive; I probably had been warned about it. I pushed and pushed, but I wasn’t big enough and I wasn’t strong enough and I couldn’t budge the heavy wooden window. Then I started calling out for help. Even though Mama and Papa weren’t more than 30 feet away, the barn muffled the sounds of my cries, and they didn’t hear me. Once, Mama asked Papa, “Did you hear something? Sounds like someone calling,” “It’s just a hen cackling out in the barn,” Papa answered. Desperately, I tried to go down the stairs, which were n-w burning, but the heat waves were so intense I could only force my way a few feet. I was still carrying an egg in each hand; I never did let go of them.

The heat waves were all coming up those stairs, and I was trying to force my way down. And those heat waves were burning me. I put my hands up over my eyes to keep them from stinging and tried again. The backs of my hands were burned very badly and the rest of my face. I guess if I hadn’t put my hands over my eyes I probably would be blind today; because it burned my skin real deep, that skin never did heal on the back of my hand. I tried the window a second time and was beginning to cry. Well, there I was in some predicament, wasn’t I? When Authur turned the plow at the end of the row and started back toward the house, he saw the smoke from the barn. He knew immediately his small sister was responsible. Hadn’t he taken matches from her just yesterday? Dropping the reins, he started running as fast as he could across that plowed field, and shouting to get someone’s attention. Mama and Papa heard the shouts and ran out from the wash shed to see what he was shouting about. Then they saw the barn in flames. No one had to tell them who started the fire either. Authur reached the open front of the barn and the first thing he saw was my little red coat. Then he knew for sure I was in there. He didn’t have much hope of getting me out. But he began calling, “Lora B, Lora B! Where are you?” Perhaps he really didn’t expect an answer, but there just above the burning hay appeared my small frightened face. Quickly he began climbing up the side of the stacked hay bales, wondering if he could reach me. He could only go about half way up; then he remembered how many times he had told me to jump to him. Authur shouted, “JUMP!” Once was enough, I jumped through the flames. He was holding on with one arm and he caught me in the other. He got me down out of there and I was so happy to be saved. But I wasn’t happy long. When Authur reached safety with me, he turned me over his knee and gave See Barn Burned, page 44

Barn Burned ~ from page 42 me the gosh awfulest whipping I ever had in my life. They had all worked hard to put up that hay; and he knew it was all going to be gone. There wasn’t any way once that barn got started burning they would be able to put it out. Authur scolded and sent me to the house. “And stay there,” he told me. I went to the house, I remember crawling up on my Mama’s bed, and realizing for the first time that I still held the two eggs in my hands, and they weren’t broken. I lay there and cried while my baby brother watched me with eyes of wonder from his baby bed.
Neighbors’ Help
The smoke had been seen for miles, and the neighbors began arriving to help. Our closest neighbors, the George Hoovers, arrived with my playmate, Burns Hoover. Someone cut a hole in the end of the barn and pulled out a few bales of hay. The men formed a bucket brigade from the water tank and tried to put out the fire, but it was of no use. The fire didn’t burn out until a week later. Many chickens, horses and cows as well as the new Model T Ford were lost, along with this year’s crops and my new red coat. In my child’s mind, I didn’t realize the loss this fire represented. It was years later before I realized fully what a lose this day had meant for my family. When Mama finally came to the house to see about me, the pain from my burned hands, face and body had already become intense. My eyes had been protected by my hands, which were closed tightly over the two eggs. The backs of my hands were burned the deepest. Mama used the last of an ointment she had on my face and desperately searched for something to use to stop the pain of my burned hands and the rest of my body. Then she got an idea. There were several gallons of black strap molasses put up in the fall, perhaps this would do. But how could she get it to cover all the burns, and keep it there? Then she thought of the galvanized washtub. While she cut my clothes off, she had someone go for the tub, and put it in the back yard. And Mama sent someone else for the molasses. Mama put me in that washtub in the middle of the back yard, and she poured molasses all over me. Of course it cut the air off and that stopped the pain. I have wondered how in the world they ever got the molasses off of me; that stuff sticks like glue. So there I sat in that washtub while Mama kept pouring those molasses, until finally I was looking just like Tar Baby in those “Uncle Remus Tales.”

Lora B. Davis Garrison, a native of Uvalde County, Texas, was
a historian, a storyteller, rancher, newspaper columnist and folklorist. Born and raised a Texas ranch girl, without electricity or running water, learned to cook on a wood stove, chopped wood and hauled water. She rode horseback to a three-room schoolhouse; and was descended from 1821 settlers in Red River County, and the Texas Hill Country. Lora B. traveled the world with her late husband, Col. Roger William Garrison, during his 30 year career with the U.S. Air Force. They raised their five children in locations such as Guam, France, Texas A&M, Washington, D.C., Bangkok, Thailand, and US. She and Roger moved back to the Hill Country near Garner State Park in 1972 when he retired. After the death of her mother at the age of 93 in 1978 (a true pioneer woman), Lora B. became concerned about the stories being lost. She began collecting Oral Histories from contemporaries of her mother in 1979. A collection of her stories appeared in her twice-weekly columns “My Stomping Grounds,” in the Uvalde Leader newspaper for 10 years. Lora B. became a wonderful storyteller, sharing pioneer stories at schools, libraries and events, including the Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio for more than 11 years. She lived on the family ranch where she grew up, between Utopia and Rio Frio, Texas, until she was 87; writing, passing on history and telling stories. Lora B. passed away in November 2017. She loved people and adventure, and she never met a stranger. Lora B. is missed by family and friends around the world.

Graff 7A Ranch Corn Maze in Hondo Hondo is the home of the South Texas Maize – get it? A corn maze. Open weekends in the fall, there is so much more to do than try to find your way out of a 7-acre maze, although that could keep kids and grownups occupied for a while. You can also pick out pumpkins, jump on giant pillows, slide down a corn mountain, take a hayride, ride a cattle train, sit by a campfire. This huge corn maze is part of the 7A Ranch, a working cattle ranch where Ken and Laurie Graff are the fifth generation to live and work on the ranch. The corn maze is really sorghum that grows about 12 feet high. Last year’s maze, a tribute to the military, was divided into two parts and took 15 to 30 minutes to walk each part. Bats at Devil’s Sinkhole in Rocksprings Devil’s Sinkhole may be the largest single-chamber cavern in Texas – a 50-foot wide opening gives into a 140-foot shaft that drops into a 320foot diameter cavern with a total depth of more than 350 feet. The cavern is enormous and is home to one of Texas’s largest colonies of Mexican free-tailed bats. From late spring through early fall more than 3 million bats leave the sinkhole every evening. The Devil’s Sinkhole Society offers evening tours to see the massive bat colony as well as nature walks, birding walks, day tours to see the sinkhole, and motorcycle tours. I’m telling you, fall hikes and bird walks might be the way to go. All tours begin at the Rocksprings Visitors Center in Rocksprings on the square – and this is the only way to visit the sinkhole. Texas’ oldest operating Theater in Uvalde Uvalde’s Grand Opera House on North West Street, built in 1891, is the oldest theater in Texas. The Grand Opera House is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The two-story Romanesque style theater quickly became a social center in Uvalde and a leading venue in the area for plays and musicals and cultural events. Motorcycle Museum The Lone Star Motorcycle Museum, four miles north of Vanderpool, is open Friday through Sunday (March to November) from 10 am to 4 pm. The museum features an impressive display of machines from around the world, dating from the 1910s to modern day. Admission is $7 for adults, $6 ages 65 and up.
