ichael Wilson is a highly creative fine artist, a sculptor in wood, who fashions massive slabs of native hardwoods (black walnut, ash, cherry, oak) into chairs, tables, floor lamps and other functional pieces that are also strikingly beautiful works of art. The panoramic vistas and rugged terrain of Wimberley encompass the hilltop workshop where Michael designs and builds high end custom furniture. Up until about 17 years ago, he had no experience in woodworking or construction, which is hard to fathom, considering the stellar quality of his work. His introduction to working with wood began when he decided to fix up an old house in California, where he and his wife, Cynthia, were living. After that, he began to build furniture to go inside the house. Bolstered by these successes and by his enjoyment of the work (certainly more than he enjoyed his job as a sushi chef), Michael continued to teach himself. He read some books on design and woodworking, however, since he is undoubtedly an experiential learner, most of his self-education was accomplished with a hands-on approach, learning by doing. Gallery offers art for enthusiasts of all levels

at Art on 12 Gallery and Studios in Wimberley, enthusiasts can find a collection of art from more than 50 Texas artists in mediums including photography, painting, sculpture, jewelry, and mixed media - in subjects of cityscape, landscape, western art, portraiture, and abstract. The gallery opened its doors a few years ago, after several local artists came up with the idea to share this space just south of the square.

Art on 12 is staffed by its artists, which allows customers the opportunity to mingle with the artists and ask questions about their work. Bob Cook, resident artist, explains, “The one thing we have that is different from anyone else is that we have a bunch of different artists — more than anyone. It’s a big gallery. This is a passion we all share.” Customers are enjoying their “Take Me Home program,” which is available to any client who is considering purchasing a piece of art but wants to make sure

it is a proper “fit” in their home. Clients can take a piece of art home for seven days to ensure the perfect “fit.” Art on 12 Gallery and Studios also takes a photo of customers with their art when a purchase is made, then shares it on social media. Bob smiles, “It’s fun to come in here.” Open 7 days a week, Art on 12 currently allows open juried exhibitions and also offers artist studio space for rent. The gallery accepts commissions, and they are happy to ship your Art on 12 purchase anywhere in the world. The gallery also hosts workshops in painting, photography, woodcut prints, alcohol ink, and Photoshop. There’s plenty of room in its 5,000 square feet space. The building was built in the 1920’s, and still retains its original charm. It’s a beautiful setting to host an event surrounded by art, and it even has a special event room available to rent for private events such as cocktail parties, weddings, workshops, book signings, yoga, and other events. The gallery also allows guest artist shows. Art on 12 participates in Wimberley’s Second Saturday Gallery Trail, when many local art galleries stay open late the second Saturday of the month so art enthusiasts can stroll gallery-togallery and enjoy the collections of art while mingling with the artists and enjoying wine and light snacks. Approximately a dozen Wimberley galleries participate in the monthly event. Bob says the gallery is often categorized as one in which all art enthusiasts — whether beginning or seasoned — can enjoy. He explains, “I think what makes us different is the number of artists and the fact that if you read our reviews, people are saying that we are a middle-class art See ART ON 12, page 7

town in the Texas Hill Country. “We were in Texas to attend a wedding,” Cynthia says. Even though this was in July, when the intense summer heat often turns all but the most intrepid individuals against the idea of living in the Lone Star State, Michael recalls, “I thought I must be dreaming – this was not my idea of Texas. I expected everything to be dry and brown and flat.” Honestly, that’s a fairly accurate description of vast stretches of the state, but it is in no way true of the Wimberley

area, and that’s where they decided to relocate. Michael’s work is quite labor intensive. He mills the wood, hand-carves all the designs, and does his own welding. He uses many varieties of wood, but two of his favorite woods to work with are walnut and ash. “Ash takes a stain very well,” he says, “and walnut already has good colors.” Walnut carves well and walnut furniture can last a lifetime, or several lifetimes, which makes it timeless. These materials are complementary to Michael’s modern designs, which also have a timelessness that transcends society’s fickle nature and infatuation with the latest styles. Regarding his creative process, Michael believes it is important not to spend more time mulling over something than is necessary or productive. He says, “If you simply pay attention, the material (the wood itself) will tell you exactly how it will be.” He approaches each new task with the unspoken assumption that he’ll figure it out, and then he works at it until he gets it. It is a form of complete immersion into the process “that sometimes escapes more intellectually based people, who are maybe thinking a lot about what they’re doing,” he says. “I am perhaps immature, but when I set my mind to do something, the possibility of failure disappears,” Michael says. “There’s a tendency as people age

to approach new ideas with trepidation, and they are always worrying that it’s going to be too difficult or take a long time,” he says. By contrast, children often lose themselves, or certainly lose track of time, when they are engrossed in play or in a project that interests them, so in this sense, he may be immature but as Cynthia clarifies, “immature in a good way,” adding that “Michael is a true artist who has an amazing work ethic,” another perspective that rings true. Michael has designed many museumworthy items that are equally at home in an art gallery or a private residence – the Kyoto floor lamp, the Python lamp, the somewhat outrageous spidery-legged coffee table that was actually inspired from hearing the Bob Schneider song “Tarantula” a few too many times on the radio. But, he says, “Work for me is not about what I like the most. I’m in my shop engaged in a personal relationship with whatever I’m working on at the time. I don’t have any particular piece that I think of as my favorite, rather, it’s just whatever is in front of me.” Michael is currently working on a commissioned project to design and make a very large bar for an Austin Hotel. Feeling creative? Display spots are still up for grabs. “If you have a need to decorate, contact us here at the EmilyAnn,” says Ann with a smile. Exhibitors can begin setting up and decorating November 1; displays must be completed by November 20. Don’t miss the grand Opening Ceremonies November 25 from 4 pm to 6 pm. Highlights include Santa’s arrival by fire truck at 5 pm and the lighting of displays and the hilltop tree at dusk (about 5:40 pm). After the official tree lighting, the Trail will be open from 6 pm to 10 pm. Awards for displays in several categories will also be presented. The “ART Stage,” built in memory of Andrew Travis Reding, provides a special setting for Christmas entertainment by area musicians, choirs and talent most evenings. If you or your group would like to perform, contact Bridget at the EmilyAnn Theatre. A menorah will be lit in celebration of Hanukkah at the Trail of Lights December 12-20. “It is a not to be missed experience,” says Ann. Admission to the Trail of Lights is free (donations gratefully accepted) and open to the public November 25 through

December 28 (weather permitting) Sunday through Thursday from 6 pm to 9 pm and Friday and Saturday from 6 pm to 10 pm. “And please remember that, as we grow and on very busy nights, parking is available at Wimberley High School and a lighted path provided,” says Ann. In the spirit of the holiday season, the EmilyAnn Theatre is accepting gently used books to be distributed at Trail of Lights by Rotary Club of Wimberley volunteers. “It’s a wonderful way to share with the community,” says Ann. The season continues at the EmilyAnn with “Pride and Prejudice” February 22-25, 2018 (Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2 pm). n the beginning, there were four sisters – Doris, Diana, Donna, and Linda – who always enjoyed spending time together on shopping weekends. These sometimes stretched into shopping weeks, with frequent stops at off-the-beaten-path thrift stores, yard sales, and flea markets. Still traveling and shopping together after all these years, they recently went on a road trip to Tennessee and Alabama. This shared passion for shopping and finding treasures for their homes and for themselves turned into something more when the two middle sisters, Diana Stanley and Donna Morris, decided to open a store together. (The sisters had a store for 3-1/2 years in Cave Creek, Arizona, before setting up 4sisterShop about a year and a half ago in Wimberley. ) Donna grew up in Arizona, and she lived in Austin for many years before moving to Driftwood three years ago. She says, “Wimberley has always been a great little town and I spent quite a few long weekends here with friends,” she says. “There is such a strong sense of community which we are so happy to be part of.” Diana says, “We love the area where our shop is located, with the creek so close by. Once we settled in here, we closed the store in Arizona.” Their creekside store offers customers an eclectic mix of merchandise – rustic, vintage, industrial, handmade, and new. Metal kitchen canisters, also new although they hearken back stylistically to the 1940s, share shelf and wall space with genuine vintage and handmade articles. The harmonious effect of all these different styles, time periods, and even national origin, grouped together is a tribute to the decorating skills of Donna and Diana. Diana is the artistic, creative sister who likes to paint furniture and repurpose thrift

Donna is the organizer and planner who is always on the move and constantly adding new things to the store. She also likes to decorate, but takes a somewhat more measured approach than Diana. The Gypsy Market features women’s bohemian Hill Country chic clothing and accessories, including artisan-made items such as beaded bohemian bags, and Benchmade leather purses and wallets by Juan Antonio. The shop also offers a large collection of jewelry, including contemporary Bohemian pieces by B.b.Lila, gypsy style chokers, timeless gemstone and pearl jewelry by seventh and eighth generation native Texan mother-daughter team JoJoRose, and one-of-a-kind gemstone vintage jewelry by Gypsy & the Blue. If that isn’t enough to have you running for this adorable gray cottage tucked back in the Wimberley Square, the shop also offers a beautiful collection of highly-collectible Native American turquoise and coral jewelry. The Gypsy Market was established in 2015 by mother and daughter team, Becki and Claire Jackson. “I found heaven on earth when I moved to the Hill Country in 2012 when my daughter Claire started college at Texas State University,” Becki smiles. She grew up in a small ranching community in West Texas. After earning

a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin, Becki moved to Dallas. She stayed there for 27 years, during which she worked the complete gamut in the fashion industry as a buyer and in management. She worked for Scarborough’s in Austin, The Carriage Shop, a group of upscale Dallas boutiques, then went on to the wholesale end of the business and owned two showrooms at the Dallas Apparel Mart. There, she owned another boutique

he close emotional bond between humans and canines is unmistakable. Not only has everyone who has ever had a dog experienced this phenomenon, but several recent scientific studies have shown that the only case of interspecies interaction that causes the mutual release of oxytocin (the most important of hormones that bonds mothers to their babies) is the interaction between humans and dogs. With such a long history of mutual love and affection, it’s only natural that we humans don’t want our canine friends to be abandoned, neglected, or otherwise mistreated. At Wimberley Adoption Group & Rescue (WAG Rescue), “there is a lifetime commitment to the dogs.” says Barbara

Foss, who is a long-time volunteer and WAG Rescue Board member . This year marks the eight year anniversary since Pat Davis and Debbie Nordyke recognized the dire need for a local organization to rescue and care for the large number of abandoned, lost, and unclaimed dogs in Wimberley and Western Hays County. WAG Rescue was incorporated in June 2009 to address this problem. Today there are 75 to 100 volunteers involved with various WAG Rescue activities as well as the three local veterinarians who offer discounted services and are sponsors of the annual WAGala fundraisers. attie lived on the streets in a rural area of Comal County, Texas. WAG Rescue has no idea how long she was on the streets, but based on her physical condition, they assume it was over a year. Without even the most basic care, it wasn’t surprising that she was pregnant, underweight, infested with intestinal parasites, and had severely damaged teeth. After Mattie delivered 12 puppies in early May, local residents contacted WAG Rescue and they were able to save Mattie and five of her puppies. Then began the process of caring for the mother and her pups and nursing them to health so they could be adopted. All of Mattie’s surviving puppies have been adopted into loving homes, and despite all of her problems, Mattie’s resilience and sweet nature endures. She has a new smile, and she loves her stuffed toys. Mattie demonstrates trust and affection and is a loving, friendly dog.

aymond Cook Czichos passed away less than a year ago, but he will always be remembered, especially in Wimberley, as the man who brought great joy to thousands of people who spent their summer vacations at 7A Ranch and who still recall their adventures at Pioneer Town. He was renowned for his humorous portrayals of Pecos Bill in the Gay ’90s show and the drunk cowboy in the Medicine Show, and greatly admired for his sense of humor, flair for storytelling, and generous hospitality. The 7A Ranch started with five rock cottages and a rock recreation room in 1946, when Ray was eight years old and his parents, Raymond Louis and Madge Wood Czichos, purchased seven acres of land on the banks of the Blanco. They bought more land, added and rented out more cabins, and in 1956 built Pioneer Town, a charming replica of a Wild West street complete with a saloon and a Victorian-era Opera House. We are preserving the legacy of Mr. Czichos, the man who built 7A, and his original goal which was to provide modern fully equipped cottages on the Blanco River.” The flood that devastated Wimberley in 2015 over Memorial Day weekend uprooted many of the towering cypress trees on the river bank along with washing out a number of the cabins at 7A Ranch. Thankfully, no one was injured, but there was severe damage to the property, and less than a year later, the resort was sold to a new owner. “We lost 15 cabins in the flood and closed for a while to rebuild,” says Amanda. “Some of our new cabins were built up from the slabs of the original cabins.” Today, there are 12 brand new river-front cabins that were built in 2016, three lodges with 10 rooms each, and two four-plexes available for groups large and small. Summer vacationers are returning

t Aloe Skin and Body, the licensed estheticians and massage therapists focus on overall wellness, with skin care that combines the latest technology with high quality organic skin care products, and massage therapies for relaxation and relief from a number of stress-induced and physical ailments. Skin care has always interested Tracy Bethel, owner of Aloe spas in Austin and, more recently, in Wimberley. “From the time I was very young, I loved going to the grocery store and looking at the different masks,” Tracy says, “or buying food to make my own completely natural masks.” After Tracy earned her MS in Communication Disorders, she worked as a speech pathologist and moved around quite a bit (Washington DC, Boston, Denver), but she never lost her early interest in skin care and was always “looking into programs to become an esthetician.” “When my family and I moved to

garage apartment. “At one point I had to set up my facial room in our bedroom,” she says, “and see my clients there while we were moving into our new home.” As Tracy’s skin care business grew, she added a massage therapist and opened the first Aloe spa in a busy west Austin neighborhood, creating a peaceful retreat for her growing number of customers. That calm oasis offering individualized skin care and massage was recreated last year with a second spa in Wimberley. “I was at Blue Hole with my kids and my sister, and I saw the space and it just pulled me in,” she says, “I love the vibe in Wimberley.” With exfoliations, extractions, masks and microneedling among the many skin care treatments on the menu, it can be daunting for first-time clients to decide where to begin. “I like to tell people to start with the aloe pure facial, our signature face lifting massage, and then move on to the aloe pure plus hydrafacial that includes extra masks and massage,” Tracy says, “customers never have to worry about artificial fragrances or chemicals in any of our products.” Two of the spa’s favorite lines, Eminence and Arcona, are both dedicated to keeping things environmentally clean and green, while providing amazing changes to the skin. The customized massages at Aloe Spa are a blend of swedish, deep tissue, and Thai massage. Marie, who is the manager and one of the therapists, describes a couple of the massages that are perhaps a little less familiar – craniosacral and the castor oil detox massage. “Craniosacral therapy is a full body treatment that concentrates on the head and spine to release tension in the back, neck and head,” Marie says, “clients find it very relaxing and they also report improvement for a wide range of issues

im Moore is a native Texan who grew up in the oil fields of north Texas near Wichita Falls. After attending school in Lubbock, he and his wife, Brooke, spent 15 years in the western Colorado town of Paonia, where Tim was minister for the Paonia Church of Christ. everend Wes Cain is a product of God’s amazing grace and work within the United Methodist Church. Born and baptized in Burnet, he has deep roots both to the Texas Hill Country and what is now the Rio Texas Annual Conference. Wes attended college at Texas Lutheran University. There he graduated Summa Cum Laude in December of 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in Theology with a Minor in Biblical Greek and, more importantly, met and married the love of his life, Jessica. Wes then attended Princeton Theological Seminary, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a Masters of Divinity. The emphasis of his learning was on ministry to young adults/young families and creative preaching. Wes has pastored a number of churches in a variety of capacities both here in Texas and in New Jersey. everend Denham and Molly moved to Wimberley from South Padre Island where Jim served as resident Chaplain for Chapel by the Sea since 2008. From 1999 to 2008, Reverend Denham served as Senior Pastor for the Chapel in the Hills in Wimberley. Jim has also served as Director of Chaplaincy Services for the Seton Hospital System, Pastor of Austin Heights Baptist Church and Hospice Chaplain for Girling Home Hospice. “Wimberley” is an area made up of the incorporated Village of Wimberley, the incorporated City of Woodcreek, and unincorporated areas of central Hays County 15 miles northwest of San Marcos, 40 miles southwest of Austin, 60 miles northeast of San Antonio. The population was 2,626 at the 2010 census.

GEOGRAPHY

Wimberley is nestled in the Blanco River Valley where Cypress Creek flows into the Blanco River. Extensive deposits of limestone make up white rocks and white river bottom common in the area. It is about 1,000 feet above sea level on the Edwards Plateau.

In the 1850s, Wimberley had a grist mill, tannery, store, shoe shop, and a school that was also used as a church and meeting hall. By the 1870s, it also had a blacksmith. By 1880, the Post Office was set up. By 1900, nine houses were built around the square. By the 1920s, the county finally started to improve roads in and out of the village (the road to San Marcos was paved in 1921). By 1939, electricity was available. The population tripled from 1880 to 1947, based on estimates by the Post Office, to a little more than 400 people.

Born and raised in San Francisco, CA, Linda attended San Francisco State College, majored in Business, and then spent more than 25 years in retail management for major retailers. Vintage Soul is ideally situated in a vine-covered historic building that is more than 100 years old and was once a pharmacy on Mercer Street before it was moved to this location in the 1950s. “I could not have asked for a better building,” Julie says, “There’s no running water, no bathroom, and no storage, but it’s perfect.” What the location lacks in modern amenities, it more than makes up for with historical authenticity and ambience. The store is somewhat short on space, but don’t be deceived by this. Vintage Soul is floor to ceiling chock-full of treasures large and small, yet surprisingly easy to navigate and not at all cluttered. ulie Crawford’s first love is interior design and her signature decorating style imbues Vintage Soul with magical beauty and whimsy. “Home decorating is my passion, beginning in my own home and moving beyond that to decorating for friends and then for friends of friends,” says Julie, as a way of explaining how her interests and enthusiasms developed naturally over time until the only logical next step was to open her own shop, which she did three years ago this summer. There is no doubt that everything in Vintage Soul – the hand lettered signs, the antique French shutters, mahogany dresser, and mirrors that anchor the eclectic newer collections, the carefully selected reproduction and new mirrors, chandeliers and artwork, vintage crochet doily dream catchers, religious statues, cute blouses, handbags, scarves, and jewelry – is there because Julie likes it, and because it is in some way a reflection of her personal style. With her husband and four sons, Julie is outnumbered by the men five to one at home, and from that perspective, she says, “This shop is my girl. This is the where I get to fluff up and play. I love decorating and redecorating the shop.” Julie describes her shop as “a vintage-inspired boutique” – even though all of the items are not by definition vintage according to their age, they look and feel true to that earlier time period. And because Julie is “always looking for the story,” seeking out anything from bangles to bunting and burlap that hearkens back to an earlier era, she chooses pieces that are very much at home with the actual antiques. And don’t miss the cotton boll wreath hanging high on the wall or the funky old framed picture of George Washington, unsmiling as always, but quite comfortable there on the shelf with twenty-first century eyeglass cases and bowls of bracelets. Julie’s hand painted signs have been favorite shop items since the beginning and, acquiescing to her customers’ requests, she now puts her artist’s signature on them. She painted the ear-

lier signs on reclaimed pallets, but now more often uses old barn wood, ceiling tins, and even door panels. The washed fabric trucker style caps that send a message – Yes Ma’am, No Sir, Sweet Dripping Springs, Hey Y’all – are also Julie’s designs and exclusive to Vintage Soul. A portion of proceeds from sales of the Heart of Texas cap goes to help support the Heart of Texas Pregnancy Resource Center.
