nyone who has spent any time around Wimberley knows the VFW’s 4th of July Rodeo – three days of non-stop action and excitement rated the “Best CPRA Rodeo of the Year” in 2006. Though that one big event is enough to put the Oldham-Cummings VFW Post #6441 on the interest radar of everyone in the area, there’s much more going on at the Hall than the once-a-year big event. Every Friday night of the year (except when pre-empted by the 4th of July Rodeo), the most popular Bingo tournament in the county brings in

scores of regulars and (always) some new faces. Two large electronic scoreboards on the walls of the VFW Hall display the number count; at the Concessions stand VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary members keep the crowd fed and happy with hot dogs, sausage wraps, nachos, popcorn, cold drinks, snacks and desserts. At least 14 hotly contested games of Bingo result in jubilant winners claiming cash prizes ranging from $75 to a possible $500 for a winning board in “Blackout.” Downhill from the main hall, Boy Scout Troop #127 regularly meets in the Hut they created in the last See WIMBERLEY VFW, page 7

VFW Post members were hands-on with help remodeling the Hut and lend an ongoing helping hand to the Troop. Adjacent to the Boy Scout Hut, The Barn is the hangout for VFW members on Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings, where they get together to pitch horseshoes under a big oak tree and “just talk,” according to VFW Quarter Master Larry Merkin – who often takes part in the gatherings. The old building is the original structure on the 24-acre site known as the Wimberley Valley Veterans Park and remains pretty much in its original state – a barn, reports Merkin. (The better for pitchin’ and spittin’.…)

Future Farmers of America (FFA) and 4H Groups also use the Hall and Veterans Park for their activities. The 4H holds their annual Memorial Day Weekend Rodeo in the VFW’s large arena and the FFA holds their annual bullriding competition and barbeque cookoff on the VFW grounds each fall. The community at large also rents the VFW Hall for weddings, birthday parties, family gatherings and other events. The newest addition to the traditional celebrations is a gigantic fireworks display in the VFW rodeo arena on July 3, says Michael Harthcock, VFW rodeo chairman. Michael promises “the largest fireworks display we’ve had in the Wimberley area”– the result of combining three separate nightly shows, as done in previous years, into one really big show one night. “We did that last year and it was such an impressive sight, that we’ve decided to make it even bigger this year. “ The show is co-sponsored by the Wimberley Chamber of Commerce and free to the public. “We have plenty of room,” Michael assures. “Last year we had 4,500 attend— our arena can seat 5,000. We’ve also expanded our parking and will have Hays County sheriffs and constables on hand to help with traffic and crowd control.”

The evening’s events will include food vendors and a fun mini-bull riding competition in the arena just preceding the fireworks display. Live music from Broken Glass (and another yet-to-be-determined band) will entertain the crowd after the firework display. But, of course, the annual 4th of July Rodeo is the biggest event of the year. For three days – July 4, 5 and 6 – the VFW plays a huge part in Wimberley’s annual Jubilee celebration that includes live music and a parade on the Wimberley Square. FYI • The Oldham-Cummings VFW Post #6441 is located on Jacob’s Well Road (CR 182) off Ranch Road 12 north of Wimberley. Entertaining locals make up “amazing theatre”

W

By Laurel Robertson

imberley Players was born in an elementary school cafeteria and spent its formative years on a small stage in a converted greenhouse, surviving rising floodwaters and midnight invasions by mysterious critters. In 2009, the group graduated to the spacious and modern Wimberley Playhouse. Through all the years and more than 140 productions, the Players have remained focused on their original goal:

bringing the magic of live theater to the Wimberley community. That community, says volunteer and Board member, Julie Ray, is now growing beyond Wimberley into the larger Central Texas area. “What was our little community theater is rapidly becoming a destination stage, attracting widespread audiences,” she reports. At the end of performances, those audiences are so often overheard uttering the same phrase that The Players have adopted it as their new tagline:

“Amazing Theater!” With an expanding population of new talent and new audiences, the Players regularly stage five productions a year –two musicals and a mix of dramas and comedies. Most performances sell out the 110-seat Playhouse Theater. This 2013 season opened with a revival of Arthur Miller’s classic “Death of a Salesman.” Coming right up, April 12 through May 5, is “The Canterville Ghost” – a musical adapted from the short story by Oscar Wilde, about the unlikely pres-

Beat the heat with treats from Wimberley Shave Ice

S

cott Owens has been known as the Sno Cone Dude in Wimberley for the past 24 years; the Sno Cone Dude whose frozen treats put smiles on the faces of kids of all ages. Just ask any kid in Wimberley what their favorite summer treat is, and one of the more than 120 flavors of shave ice at the legendary Wimberley Shave Ice (formerly known as Tropical Snow) will surely top their list. What makes this ice treat so special? Unlike a crunchy sno cone, shaved ice is fluffy and soft, and Scott uses natural and organic flavors, some sweetened with agave. And quite a few of Scott’s 120-plus flavors were created at the whim of Wimberley kids. You’ll find concoctions such as Bubble Nut, Candyloupe, Drunken Monkey, The Governator, Mount Baldy, The Mominator, Blood and Guts, Sweet Tart and Worm Gutz. Of course you’ll also find the normal Cherry, Lime, Root Beer, Strawberry and other favorites. Sno Cone Bucks are also very popular, as well as Scott’s best marketing tool. The Bucks—worth $2 off shave ice purchases—are a favorite of teachers who use them as incentives and rewards for their students and parents who use them birthday party favors. Bucks can even be imprinted with a business name to be used as promotional giveaways. And at the end of each season, kids look forward to “Free Day,” the final day of the sno cone season, when all shave ice cones are free ’til the syrup runs out. Scott also operates his concession at Wimberley’s Lions Club Market Days through December. There, in addition to shave ice, he offers delicious hot Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee and hot chocolate to warm up the vendors, volunteers

Fortunately for Scott, there’s not much call for shave ice during the winter months. So, December through February is the perfect time for him to enjoy his second life as a Jamacian traveler. His love for Reggae and the “no problem mon,” laid-back lifestyle of the island call him back to Jamaica every year from December through February (or when his funds runs out). Scott Owens has the best of two worlds and “life is good.” FYI • Wimberley Shave Ice is located in the alley between King Feed and Brookshire Brothers on Ranch Road 12 and at his booth at Wimberley Market Day the first Saturday of each month from March through December. For more information and hours, call 512-847-6010 or visit the web site at www.wimberleyshaveice.com.

Wimberley Arts Fest at Blue Hole Regional Park

T

he Wimberley Arts Fest at Blue Hole, sponsored by the Wimberley Valley Art League, will welcome fine artists to the fifth annual event April 27-28, 2013. Friday evening, April 26, enjoy a free concert in the park, sponsored by the City of Wimberley. The Wimberley Arts Fest runs Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. During the festival, guests can enjoy a juried fine arts show featuring works in all media, Cajun and Texas folk and jazz music, food and drinks, a plein aire paint-off on Saturday, children’s art corner and a vintage car show. Great finds, shopping at Wimberley Market Days

T

he first Saturday of the month, from March through December, brings treasure seekers and shopaholics to the little village of Wimberley, a popular getaway offering lots of shopping, dining and lodging choices. Wimberley Market Days, the oldest and largest outdoor market in the Hill Country, hosts 475-plus vendors and welcomes thousands of shoppers. Wimberley Market Day. Photo by Madonna Kimball. Market Days is not your typical flea market. Stroll the peaceful grounds, where you’ll find arts and crafts, plants, jewelry, fossils, clothing, antiques, collectibles, food, toys; things that will jog childhood memories, handmade items, new and unusual items as well as old but not forgotten. Shoppers can enjoy a break at the spacious pavilion beside the BBQ House; sit in the shade, eat, drink and enjoy the sounds of local musicians. There is no admission charge for Market Days, but there is a fee for parking in the conveniently located lots. lights of shopping fancy take wing at On a Branch, a delightful boutique located in The Quarter Shops in downtown Wimberley. In the mood for shopping? Walk into this happy shop and you certainly will be. You’re likely to find yourself smiling as you survey the treasures within. Add to the airy ambience the genuinely friendly and helpful staff, and you’re in for a oneof-a-kind experience. Traci Ferguson and her mother, Lynda Pyle, opened On a Branch in August 2012 and on any given day and you’re likely to find the two of them, along with one of Traci’s four daughters—Lauren, Brittany, Victoria and Emily— in the boutique. “ This truly is a family affair, explains Traci— even the men help out. “Our husbands are our general contractors, maintenance men, furniture movers and assemblers, whatever we need,” she says. The shop’s recent move to a larger space means “a bigger store with more room for more fun,” she smiles. And merchandise suggestions from her girls help keep the shop in touch with the younger set. “With all these women, we have a lot of opinions,” Traci explains. Her daughters’ input, combined with the tasteful choices of Traci and Lynda show in all that On a Branch offers—from trendy clothing pieces in a wide range of styles, to jewelry, accessories, gifts and much more—appealing to many generations. “If you’re a girl, we can find you something here,” says Traci. Traci tells the story of an 84-year-old woman who came to the boutique with a group of friends and, on a whim, tried on a colorful dress that on first glance looked to be for someone of a much younger age. When she emerged from the dressing room wearing the dress, Traci recalls, the See ON A BRANCH, page 17

Bright, happy shopping at On a Branch boutique

lights of shopping fancy take wing at On a Branch, a delightful boutique located in The Quarter Shops in downtown Wimberley.

Ulli Johnston, Wimberley’s Boot Whisperer

T

By Laurel Robertson

hey’ve lived a lonely existence, stashed away in closets for years: fine western boots - unwanted, unworn, unloved - not because they weren’t beautiful, but because they just didn’t fit! Now they fill the shelves of the Wild West Store, eagerly waiting to be perfectly matched with their pair of forever feet by the magic of The Boot Whisperer…. Ulli Johnston can take one good look at a pair of stocking feet and walk right over to their true soul mate in leather among the hundreds of colorful and unique boots that fill her small shop just off the Wimberley Square. “I’ve never paid attention to sizes,” explains the blonde with the magnetic smile. “I look at the whole person – short legs/long legs, wide feet/narrow feet, high arch/low arch – and a pair of boots will just pop into my mind. I can’t explain how I do it – but 80 percent of the time, I’m right!” Years ago, an amazed and delighted customer dubbed her “The Boot Whisperer” and the name stuck. Now Ulli “boot whispers” people from all over the world who come to Wimberley to be matched with their perfect pair of boots. And the choices are staggering! Though the sign outside advertises “Over 500 Pairs of Boots” – that’s a very conservative estimate, concedes Ulli.

At present, she figures she has at least 700 pairs on hand. Lined up on shelves, clustered in corners, resting on fixtures and furniture – even hanging from the rafters – boots fill the senses. There are riding boots, dancing boots, tall top boots, shorties, solid color boots, boots with stitching, boots with tips, leather cutouts, with images ranging from cactus to Hula girls tooled into the leather. All of the boots are vintage and in excellent shape. Many have never been worn at all. Ulli explains that in the late 1980s, major boot makUlli Johnston, the Boot Whisperer. Ulli recounts the unlikely trail that led Tony Lamas from the ‘40s that still look her to be a Boot Whisperer in Wimberley, new. Mixed in with the boots, The Wild Texas. As a child growing up in Germany, West Store has other western parapher- she always had a fascination with cownalia: belts and buckles, cowboy hats, boys and Indians. “I have pictures of me as a little girl dressed western and I always liked western movies.” In 1988, Ulli traveled to South Texas to visit a friend and ended up at an auto auction. The auctioneer there was smitten with Ullli and to get her attention, he pretended that her habit of “speaking with her hands” had accidently caused her to win the auction. She was flabbergasted. Four weeks later the two were married at Blue Hole and have lived in Wimberley since.

“I never felt like I belonged in Germany,” she muses. “I never fit with the culture there. Coming into the Wimberley Valley, I felt like I was coming home.” In the beginning, the auctioneer and his new wife sold vintage and antique items at shows. Ulli noticed that cowboy boots always sold well. Under the tutelage of an older dealer, she learned the ins and outs of the vintage boot trade. In 1993 she opened The Wild West Store in Wimberley and moved it to its present location in 1995. Business grew steadily over the years and her fame as The Boot Whisperer spread. Her amazing abilities have been featured in articles in the New York Times, the London Financial Times, Southern Living, See BOOT WHISPERER, page 19

ill Country Accommodations trades in more than just places to stay. They offer vacation guests memorable experiences – of sipping wine on a stone patio while savoring a rosy sunset, of chasing fireflies with your cousins at the favorite family reunion spot, of relaxing into a deep claw foot tub after a day at the market. Wayne and Mary Kochenderfer know what guests want in a vacation rental. Not that long ago, they were visitors to the Wimberley area themselves, travelling from corporate jobs in Houston for weekend getaways in the Hill Country whenever they could. After retiring from Exxon in 2000, they moved to Wimberley and in 2004 bought Hill Country Accommodations, which came complete with office manager and Girl Friday Karen Dawson, who had been with the previous owners for years. Karen and the Kochenderfers list over 175 privately-owned rental units within a 15-mile radius of Wimberley, ranging in price from $90 a night to more than $1,000 a night. They know each property personally and can custom-fit an individual or a group to a place with the skill of Mr. Ollivander sorting wands. (What! You still haven’t read Harry Potter?) Karen has spent most of this morning on the phone helping a woman on a self-described “social security budget”

The view out the large picture windows overlooking Cypress Creek is pure Hill Country classic: a grassy slope leading down to the spring-fed creek shadowed by bald cypress trees just putting on their spring leaves. Georgie Girl, favorite office dog adopted during a WAGS event in The Quarter last year, feels at home in the cozy sitting room. “We’re like a little visitors’ center,” beams Mary, and waves her hand at a wall full of brochures and maps detailing everything to do in the area. “We love to help people have a good time!” Guests can count on them for informed recommendations on local restaurants, shops, entertainment and points of interest. She reports that some of their most frequent guests are family reunions, wedding parties, and girls’ getaway weekends. Wimberley, she points out, has been

a vacation destination since the early part of the last century, and hidden-away retreats are pleasurable and plentiful. The busiest weekend of the year in Wimberley, according to Wayne, is Fourth of July, with its parade, VFW rodeo, and fireworks. Hill Country Accommodations regularly book reservations for rentals a year in advance for that holiday, he advises. Most of their business is conducted over the internet and by phone, report the Kochenderfers. Each rental is listed with photographs and a description of the accommodations and amenities. There is an online rental request form and a community link that connects the visitor to complete information about the Wimberley area. The next best thing to being on vacation, say the Kochenderfers, is helping people enjoy theirs. Their business motto reflects the pleasure they find in their work: “The best place to find the right place to stay!” FYI • For more information, call Hill Country Accommodations at 512-847-5388 or visit the web site at texasvacation.com.
