BACK TO REALITY By: Danielle Line It's the end of July and back to school time is just around the corner. Where did the summer go? My daughter just finished kindergarten in June. I look back to when she entered kindergarten last fall; I was so unprepared and confused. What did we need to get? Where did we need to go? What forms did I need the doctor to send in?
I am looking forward to an easier transition this year. I have some real back to school parenting experience under my belt and my daughter loves her school. An added benefit this year? She's been attending a summer day camp at the school so the environment is still familiar and friendly to her. Are you where I was last year, new to

your child's school and unsure of what to do? Or maybe you just haven't started thinking about it yet? Read on for some steps you can take to help you prepare for back to school time. Vaccinations and Checkups Make sure your child's vaccinations are up to date. Most schools require your child to have certain vaccinations as well as an up to date physical examination and dental checkup. If you are unsure, contact your school as early as possible so you have time to schedule the necessary pediatric and dental appointments. Your pediatrician may also require extra time to fill out any forms your school requires.
School Supplies & New School Clothes Shopping for school supplies was always my favorite back to school ritual when I was a kid. I loved to pick out new notebooks and folders with my favorite cartoon characters and pop stars on them. Most kids also love getting a new wardrobe to go with their new grade level, even if your school requires the children to wear uniforms.
so we go to bed later; which means we may sleep in later. Early August is a good time to start reinforcing bed time as well as wake up time. Believe me, this will save a lot of hurried mornings caused by over-sleeping or crankiness due to lack of sleep. Many parents provide their kids with workbooks of age appropriate homework assignments to do throughout the summer. For those of us who don't, now is a good time to start it up. You can buy the workbooks at the Back to School sales. You don't have to overload your child with assignments; just enough practice to refresh their memory should do. Play Date Time It's easy for kids to fall out of touch with each other over the summer. Families go on vacation and get involved in summer activities that keep them busy. Now is a good time to set up play dates with school friends your child hasn't seen since school let out. They will feel more comfortable when school starts if they are surrounded by friendly faces. If your child is attending a new school, try to meet parents at registration and arrange play dates to acquaint your child with other kids in their grade level.
Retailers have already started their Back-to-School sales where you can find rock bottom prices on all school supplies, school uniforms and kids clothes. If you haven't received your child's list of required supplies, it's a good idea to start stocking up on the basics like paper, pencils, pens, glue and crayons. You'll need them for homework assignments and you may want to have extras on hand to donate to your child's classroom throughout the school year. Get Back into the Habit Most of us tend to break the rules when summer comes. Daytime lasts longer
Take a Trip to the School Make a visit to their school to get them familiar with the environment. Many school offices do not open until August. If your school isn't open yet, walk around the outside and talk about the school layout. Go back when it does open and let your child explore the inside as much as is allowed. Back to school can be an exciting time for kids and parents alike. With a little planning ahead, the transition from summer to school can be organized and stress-free for all. www.hillcountryparents.com

By: Andrew Stratton Your child's academic career begins early. It's understandable that you want the best for your youngster. Consider the many benefits of preschool education as you plan for your child's future. Once you realize this importance, you can then find the best school for your little one. Kindergarten Preparation Today's kindergarten is far advanced from the kindergarten of yesteryear. Children need academic preparation to succeed in kindergarten. With preschool placement, youngsters can receive important preparation in literacy and math subjects, enabling them to jump right into the curriculum that will be presented to them once they enter the standard school programs. Kids can also become comfortable in a classroom setting when they have experience in programs prior to kindergarten.
Social Engagement Youngsters can benefit from learning how to spend time away from parents and other immediate family to prepare them for school. When a 3-year-old or 4-year-old becomes comfortable away from family, interacting with teachers and peers, the little one develops valuable social engagement skills. The teachers 12
www.hillcountryparents.com
working in a preschool should have a warmth that nurtures a positive relationship with children. In turn, youngsters will receive practice in social skills, managing frustration, connecting appropriately with peers, and resolving conflicts. Emotional Growth As little ones spend time in the classroom environment, they practice important skills of emotional growth. They learn how to follow rules, take turns, develop empathy for others, listen while others speak, and communicate thoughts and feelings effectively. Many of these skills require ongoing practice, which children receive with classroom attendance. Structured Environment Attending preschool can provide kids with exposure to a structured environment, which is an excellent way to prepare for ongoing academic instruction. Classroom rules, schedules, and activities will help children learn how to adapt to these routines. The environment also provides little ones with ongoing opportunities for social interaction, which helps to strengthen these abilities. Sparking Curiosity Kids have a natural curiosity about the world around them, and a preschool environment can help spark and direct this curiosity. Kids can learn more and pursue additional learning opportunities with this type of learning support. Teachers have the resources to nurture the natural curiosity and imagination present in a youngster by providing plentiful opportunities for discovery. Many facilities have extensive imaginary play areas and outdoor space, which can foster pretend play and active play in children.

By: Nathan Thompson There are very few things in life that can rival spending time in the great outdoors with the ones we love. Roasting marshmallows, hiking through the woods, and telling late-night ghost stories are just a few of the unforgettable memories family camping can create. In order for you to have the best time on your next camping trip, we put together this Fall Family Camping Guide just for you.
research, find, and secure your ideal camping spot, visit the Texas State Parks website at www.tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks Pick your camping style. Texas State Parks allow for a variety of different camping styles. Each of which has its own unique charm, so you’ll have to pick the style that best suits your family’s needs. Each park also provides for different camping styles, so make sure to do your research in order to provide your family with the camping experience you're looking for. Overnight Cabins: The style of cabins vary from park to park, but the idea is the same. Renting a cabin can be a great idea for those who love the outdoors, but do not necessarily want to sleep outside, such as families with very young or elderly members.
Getting Started So, you’ve made the decision to take a family camping trip: now what? Especially with younger children, this moment can be where excitement meets anxiety. Will the campsite be safe? Will there be drinking water? Will we have enough food? Choosing where to camp. Here in Texas, we have some of the most incredible and diverse State Park systems.
