How to Improve Test-Taking Skills

Students are periodically tested to gauge their progress on a variety of subjects. Although testing can be an effective way to determine a student’s understanding of a given subject, not every student performs well on tests. Test-taking comes easily for some but not so for others. Nerves or trouble concentrating can foil the best students. However, there are ways for students to improve their test-taking skills. Preparation - Most tests are given with prior notice, enabling students to prepare for them well in advance. Sometimes teachers and professors will surprise students with a quiz. These pop quizzes are used to judge how well students are absorbing information and if they have been paying attention. When in class, continually jot down notes and create an outline of important information. The teacher may provide hints about the upcoming test, including emphasizing specific areas of focus or even revealing the format of the test. Contrary to what some students believe, teachers want their students to succeed. Therefore, your teacher may offer a review session the day before or be open for questions prior to the test if further clarification is needed. Studying with others can shed new light on a subject. Studying difficult subject matter with peers may help students grasp the materials better than they did in class. Classmates may have some tricks they’ve developed, including pneumonic devices for putting facts together. The day before and the day of the test - Prior to a test, make sure you eat and get enough rest. Review the material and put the main ideas or formulas onto a sheet that can be quickly reviewed. Review it many times and then put it away. Have a good meal, relax and try to get at least eight hours of sleep. On the day of the test, wake up and arrive on time or even a few minutes early for your class. This can help to calm your nerves and enable you to squeeze in some last-second studying. The test itself - Make sure you have the supplies needed for the test. This may include pens or pencils, a calculator, a textbook if you are allowed to reference, or any other supplies the teacher allows. Try to remain positive through the test. If you feel yourself getting nervous, take a few deep breaths and regroup. In addition to these tips, there are other ways to approach the test. * Do the easiest problems first. If you do not know a question, skip it and move on. There may be clues later on in the test that help you go back and answer skipped questions. * Always read the entire question. Skimming could find you missing important instructions. * Look for words that may help you determine the answer, such as “all,” ”never” or “none.” They may present clues to the answer. * Pay attention to your work and only your work. Do not be distracted if others finish before you. * If there is time, go back and look over the test. Make sure that all the questions have been answered and check for any careless mistakes. Proofread any essays and short answer questions. Preparing well for a test, remaining calm and checking over your work can help students who struggle with test-taking do their best. 6

The Connection Between Nutrition and Neurobehavioral Disorders

What do ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have to do with diet? According to recent studies, the two may be more connected than previously thought. In fact, there are more and more studies emerging that reveal the connection between the food we eat and symptoms of learning and behavioral disorders. Research has shown that 46 to 85 percent of children with ASD suffer from gastrointestinal symptoms. Furthermore, a recent study released by the ADHD Research Center in the Netherlands stated that in 64 percent of children with ADHD, the symptoms were caused by food. Brain Balance Achievement Centers of San Antonio, a supplemental education center that helps children with learning and behavioral disorders through a drug-free approach, is educating families on how food impacts learning and behavior. The experts at Brain Balance know from experience that food plays a role in learning and behavioral disorders and that they must closely examine a child’s diet for a whole-person approach to reducing symptoms. Nutrition is a big factor in the healthy development of a child’s brain and as a company that has worked with thousands of children with behavior and learning issues. It is important that parents know how they can establish a dietary plan at home. Nutrition for adequate development of the body and brain requires a mix of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids and complex carbohydrates. As parents become familiar with the nutrient-rich foods, the options are endless. As a family, they can spend time creating recipes that their children will love. The certified nutrition coach at Bran Balance Achievement Centers of San Antonio recommends the following foods for children with neurobehavioral issues: • Foods High in Omega 3 Fatty Acids: This includes tuna, broccoli, salmon, walnuts, avocado, and spinach, among others. • Foods High in Foliate: Sprouts, Asparagus, Beans, broccoli, spinach, and kale are good examples. • Foods High in Fiber: These include whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables. Omega 3 Fatty Acids are crucial for proper cognitive development, fighting inflammation, protecting the heart, insulating the body from the cold, and maintaining a healthy metabolism and weight. Fiber is crucial for maintaining proper digestive health, and foliate has been long touted for its effectiveness in enhancing cognitive development and performance. About Brain Balance Achievement Centers of San Antonio Brain Balance Achievement Centers helps children reach their academic, behavioral and social potential through a unique drug-free, whole-child approach. The Brain Balance Program utilizes customized sensory motor and cognitive activity plans, coupled with nutrition guidelines to address the root cause of most learning and developmental disorders. Brain Balance Achievement Centers of San Antonio is located at 1742 N. Loop 1604 E. Suite 121, San Antonio, TX. Things to consider before choosing a summer camp

Summer camp is often something kids look forward to, and something they will fondly recall long after they reach adulthood. For many kids, summer camp provides a first taste of independence. But as great an experience as summer camp can be for youngsters, it can be just as difficult an experience if parents don’t find the right fit for their children. That’s why parents should start thinking about summer camps for their kids in winter, before camps start filling out rosters, which tends to happen in early spring. The following are a few things parents should take into consideration when seeking a summer camp for their kids. Staff - The right summer camp staff can make all the difference. Many children are understandably shy when arriving at a summer camp, as their friends from back home might not be joining them. That can make kids hesitant to participate in activities or less enthusiastic about activities. But a good staff will know how to make kids feel welcome, which should help. The quality of staffs can vary significantly depending on the camp, so it’s important that parents ask camp representatives about their staffs before making any commitments. Ask how long the staff has been together and the types of training new and even veteran staff members undergo before the start of camp season? Does the training include first aid and emergency medical training and certification? It’s also good to ask about the consideration process the camp employs before hiring new staff, including the extent of its background checks. Are criminal background checks conducted? How many references must potential staff members supply to be considered for employment? A good camp will be forthcoming with answers to all of your questions, so eliminate those that appear hesitant to share information about their staffs. A day in the life - When choosing camps for kids, parents should ask what a typical day is like once the season hits full swing. Many parents want their youngsters to have a well-rounded experience, while others might want their kids to attend a more specialized camp, whether it’s a sports camp focusing on a particular sport or a music camp devoted to helping kids become better musicians. Regardless of the type of camp parents are considering for their kids, they should ask about what daily life at the camp is like. Ask to see schedules and how strictly camps adhere to those schedules. When considering specialized camps, ask the staff representative if kids will have the chance to simply have a little fun and which types of recreational activities are planned to give kids a break from what are often rigorous schedules. Camp goals - Another thing parents must consider before choosing a summer camp for their kids is the goals of each individual camp. A camp should be dedicated to ensuring kids have fun, even when kids are attending more specialized camps that tend to be more strict. In addition, parents should look for a camp that wants its attendees to foster relationships with their fellow campers. Camp can be lonely for some youngsters, especially those attending summer camp for the first time, but a summer camp that strives to promote friendship among its campers can reduce, if not eliminate, any feelings of homesickness. 14 alamoareakids.com Please tell our advertisers you heard about them in Enjoy San Antonio

Arts and Crafts Crafts CUPIDS ARROWS

You’ll need: Red and Pink Cardstock or Construction Paper Straws Ribbon Instructions: 1. Cut Hearts (about 3”) or use DieCutter Cut a Slit 3/4” under the point at the top of heart.

2. Insert Straw into slit. 3. Cut three 6” peices of ribbon and tie onto end of straw.

RAINBOW WIND CATCHERS

You’ll need: Paper Plates Paint, colors of the rainbow Different Colored Crepe Paper Streamers Glue Stick Fishing Instructions: 1. Cut Paper Plate in half. 2. Have children Paint or color both sides of the plate like a rainbow. 3. Glue Crepe Paper, to match colored plate, on the back of the one plate 4. Add String to hang 5. Glue other plate half to back.

YARN EASTER EGG You’ll need: Glue Yarn A Balloon Ribbon 1. 2. 3.

4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 20

Blow up your balloon a little ways and tie it. Cut some yarn in about 12 inch pieces. For this craft I used about 20 , 12″ pieces total. Mix your glue with a tiny bit of water if you want, this made it easier to soak the yarn but it took longer to dry. Either way works- just don’t dilute it too much. Start drenching the yarn in the glue Laying it on the balloon. Criss cross it over the whole thing. When you feel it’s done let it dry , I prefer to let it dry by hanging it from a rack with a clothes pin. That way it’s not touching anything and won’t get stuck. When it’s dry carefully pop the balloon, and fish it out of the egg. Add your ribbon! alamoareakids.com
