Education
Encourage Children to Love Reading Reading can have a profound impact on a child’s life in and out of the classroom. Reading can help a young student develop a more extensive vocabulary, and a study from the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics found that reading to young children promotes language acquisition, making it easier for them to learn a foreign language. That’s a significant advantage for children growing up in a world that’s increasingly global. But reading has benefits outside the classroom as well. Reading can provide an escape

from the daily grind, which is something even today’s youngsters can appreciate. Reading also is a great way for kids to relax and unwind while simultaneously giving their brains a workout. While many parents recognize the impact reading can have on their children, it’s no secret that getting kids to embrace reading can be difficult. Distractions such as video games, social media and even the great outdoors are all there to draw kids away from reading. But parents who want to instill a love of reading in their children can still take steps to

Education ensure their kids don’t miss out on the benefits of a good book. • Read to your children. Numerous studies have discovered various benefits of reading to children when they are young. The National Center for Education Statistics notes that children whose parents read to them typically become better readers and perform better in school. Reading to children early on is the first step toward fostering a love of reading kids will develop and continue throughout their lives. Many parents read to their children at night before bedtime, but any time of day will suffice. • Don’t be discouraged if kids are not interested in books. While reading fiction can help develop a youngster’s imagination, parents should not be discouraged if kids don’t want to read books. Reading
the newspaper, magazines and even comic books can help kids develop strong reading skills and an extensive vocabulary and, in the case of comic books, inspire their imaginations. Young sports fans might be more inclined to read the sports page than a novel, so let them do so. Kids are more likely to embrace reading if what they’re reading interests them, so encourage kids to read up on those interests, even if that reading does not involve picking up a book. • Get your youngster his or her own library card. Thanks to the popularity of e-readers, many adults would be hard pressed to locate their local library if asked to do so. But visiting the library is a great way to encourage kids to read, especially if kids have their own library cards. Kids with their own library cards tend to look at Article Cont’ on pg 8

Education Encourage Children to Love Reading Cont’ visits to the library as shopping trips where they get to make their own choices about what they’re taking home with them. And once kids reach a certain age, they can visit the library on their own. • Share your own reading experiences with children. Kids look up to their parents and often want to mimic their behavior. So parents can set a good example by reading as well. On trips to the library, check out your own book. While you might not want to discuss every book you read with your children, discuss the books they’re reading. Chances are you read many of those same books yourself when you were a child, and discussing books with your child is a great way to improve his or her reading comprehension.
Distractions abound for today’s youngsters, who might not embrace reading as readily as they do video games or social networking. But parents can take many steps to instill a love of reading in their kids that will last a lifetime.

Family Healthcare
What if the Aches and Pains become to much?
Copping with Juvenile Arthritis By: Miranda Pesses Did you know that kids can get arthritis, too? According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease, there are approximately 294,000 American children under age 18 that have been diagnosed with arthritis or other rheumatic conditions. Arthritis is swelling in the tissue that lines the insides of joints, and is caused by an autoimmune disease (when the body produces antibodies that attack its own tissues). Many kids feel aches and pains due to playing hard, sports or even growing pains. What do you do when you suspect that it may be more than that? There are several symptoms of juvenile arthritis which include the obvious, such as pain, stiness, and swelling in joints, and the not so obvious, such as high fever, rash and swelling in lymph nodes or other parts of the body. It is possible for these symptoms to come and go as the disease can flare and then go into remission without warning. It is important to get diagnosed by a doctor as soon
as possible, because this type of arthritis in kids can cause bones and joints to grow unevenly, as well as causing inflammation of the eyes. If you suspect that your child may have more than everyday growing pains, schedule an appointment with your pediatrician. It is a disease that can be difficult to diagnose if there are only a few vague symptoms, but doctors will usually suspect arthritis with pain and swelling in joints that lasts more than 6 weeks. The doctor will complete a physical exam, draw blood for lab tests and possibly order x-rays. They will also attempt to rule out other possibilities such as injury or Lyme disease. Be prepared to give a complete family history and a detailed list of symptoms, including dates, times and severity of symptoms, such as pain levels. If your child is diagnosed with juvenile arthritis, there are many ways to help treat the disease and manage the pain. You will most likely be referred to a Rheumatologist, which is a doctor

Family Healthcare that specializes in the treatment of arthritis. Minor pain and swelling may be treated with ibuprofen, but prescription medicine may be required for more severe pain, and swelling. Physical therapists can teach kids how to keep their muscles strong to support the joints with specially designed exercises. Keeping joints moving can help keep pain at bay, but heat is very helpful when joints are particularly painful. There are many ways to warm painful areas such as heating pads, electric blankets, warm baths and even a
paraffin wax dip. If your child is diagnosed with juvenile arthritis, there are many things you can do to help your child, yourself and other family members, such as joining a support group and staying involved with your child’s school. Encourage them to exercise and follow doctors and therapist wellness plans. Remember that well informed is well armed. Activities
Make Home Projects A Family Affair Tackling home improvement projects with kids in tow can be challenging. But if kids are old enough, moms and dads can enlist their youngsters’ help when working on projects around the house. Not only can adults keep closer tabs on kids’ activities, but involving kids in home projects also lets parents instill important and practical lessons at the same time. When asked to pitch in on home projects, young kids may feel proud they can lend a hand with such a “grown-up” task. With the right instruction, children of all ages can get involved with fix-up projects and learn new skills in the process. • Include children from the start. When beginning a project, parents can make their kids a part of the design and planning process, welcoming the input of younger members of the family, especially if renovations will impact spaces they use directly. Draft a list of supplies and ask questions of the kids regarding what supplies they think will have to go into completing the project. • Shop as a family. Although it may slow you down, take children along to the home improvement store so you can purchase supplies together. Let youngsters help you as you choose materials for the project. This way they can see how the raw materials will turn into the finished renovation. • Emphasize safety. Children
should understand that tools serve a distinct purpose and that they are not toys. Identify and explain the dangerous pieces of equipment and instruct children that they should not touch or turn on tools without an adult nearby. Go over the proper ways to handle the tools and explain the purposes of each device. Make sure everyone is wearing safety equipment, including eye protection, gloves and ear protection, while handing the tools. • Demonstrate and then let kids try. Children will not have the skills to perform more intricate tasks, but older kids can hammer some nails, mix paint or even cut wood with supervision. Assign tasks based on the child’s age. For example, a preteen may be able to saw wood, while a kindergartener can hand over nails and tools. Illustrate the correct way to get things done and then have children mirror your actions. • Attempt an easy project first. Painting a room, building a planter box, or another less complicated project can help parents gauge their kids’ abilities. Involving children in home improvement projects can teach then new skills, give them a greater appreciation of the work that goes into maintaining a house, instill a sense of pride in youngsters, and provide a great chance for kids and their parents to spend quality together

Pull yarn across heart, wrap around wire and pull yarn across to the other side. Wrap yarn securely so there is no slack. Tie a knot and cut yarn with enough length for hanging. You could also tuck a note inside and give it as a valentine.
Egg CARtON BUNNY You’ll need: recycled egg carton scissors white/pink paint a black sharpie glue 1. 2. 3. 4.
Start by cutting out just one little egg carton cup…you will need to trim around the edges so it sits flat. Then cut a square from the carton to make the ears. Cut out two bunny ears and put some white paint in the middle. Draw on the bunny’s face with a black sharpie and paint the nose with pink paint! Once the ears are dry, glue them to the back of the egg carton then paint on some white whiskers.
BINOCUlARS CRAFt You’ll need: 2 toilet paper rolls Construction paper Glue Scotch tape Scissors Stickers, crayons, etc. string 1. 2. 3.
4. 5.
Cut a piece of construction paper so that it will wrap completely around one of the toilet paper rolls. Tape the construction paper in place and then repeat this process with the other roll. Roll a piece of scotch tape into a donut and stick the two toilet paper rolls together. Cut a piece of construction paper that is long enough to wrap around the two toilet paper rolls. This piece is what will actually hold them together. Tightly wrap the piece of construction paper around rolls and tape the ends together. Add a few more tape donuts underneath this piece to have it stick even better. Use stickers or crayons to decorate the binoculars. P a hole on either side of the finished binoculars (make the holes down towards one end). Thread and knot the string through the holes to create a “strap” for the binoculars. alamoareakids.com 21

Doesn’t it seem like life’s getting harder?
The kids have to go to baseball practice and ballet, you have a business trip coming up and the dog is far overdue for his shots.
