Education
Teach Children to be Charitable It is often during times of extreme devastation when children first see how communities can join together to help one another. Such efforts may be a child’s initial exposure to charity while highlighting the importance of putting another person’s needs before your own. But children need not be exposed to charity solely during times of tragedy. Teaching children to be charitable is one of the ways to help them become good citizens of the world. By helping others, parents can instill early on lessons of kindness, empathy and compassion into their sons
and daughters. Children who are ready and willing to lend a helping hand may grow up to be more appreciative of what they have in their own lives. What’s more, they may learn to be selfless while assigning less value to material things. Youngsters who repeatedly see their own parents and other role models doing good and lending a helping hand may be more inclined to repeat that behavior, and giving will be the norm for them rather than the exception. To mold charitable children, families can employ the following techniques:

Education • Start locally. There are people right in your own community or on the street where you live who can benefit from a helping hand. Ask an elderly neighbor if he or she needs assistance with shopping for groceries or could benefit from your child taking in the garbage cans after pickup. Children can help shovel snow from sidewalks or do other ageappropriate tasks, such as place a carelessly thrown newspaper closer to a neighbor’s door. • Volunteer as a family. The entire family can get together and spend time working at a community-sponsored carnival or cleaning debris from an area beach. Volunteer work may be available at your child’s school, where families can plant gardens around the property. When volunteering as a family,
not only is your entire family helping to do good, but you’re spending quality time together as well. • Make charitable donations. Let children see the solicitations for monetary donations that come in the mail. Read aloud the pleas for funds to help children and adults who may not have enough to eat or who may require medical care. This is an important lesson in humility and helps show children that not every person in the world is comfortable. Once kids have read about the needs of others, involve them in the donation process. They can assist with sorting clothing and toys they may no longer need and then help bag it up and donate it to an agency that takes collected Article Cont’ on pg 8

Education Teach Children to be Charitable Cont’ items. • Give throughout the year. Charity need not be limited to the holiday season. Inform children that many people need help throughout the year, and that volunteering is a yearround activity. • Match kids’ charitable fundraising. Encourage children to start their own fundraising efforts and match the funds they raise. Find companies that will also match the amount your children have raised. * Set up a giving policy. Children can learn the importance of giving at an early age by dividing their allowances and financial gifts into different categories. They can put onethird toward savings, one-third
toward spending and one-third toward donations. If children do not have a lot of money in a piggy bank, they can donate their time, which many charities need as much as money.

Family Healthcare
Keep Your Family Healthy Through the Holidays The holiday season is upon us once again, and with it comes the season’s notoriously hectic pace. With crowded social calendars and the stress of holiday shopping, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed once the season hits full swing. Unfortunately, many people have trouble staying healthy through the hectic holiday season. With so much to do, it’s easy to put health on the back burner during the holidays. But however hectic the holiday season can be, there are ways to keep the family happy and healthy this holiday season. • Encourage kids to wash their hands. Germs are often spread most quickly through our hands, which are in constant contact with hotbeds for germs, including doorknobs. While adults might be quick to wash their hands after they sneeze or cough, kids are often lax in the hand washing department. But washing hands thoroughly is an effective way to ward off winter germs that attach to hands. Encourage kids to be diligent about washing their hands, not only after they use the restroom but whenever they sneeze, cough or arrive home from school. • Keep indoor air crisp and clean. Bringing home airborne germs, such as sickness-causing bacteria and other contaminants, is inevitable during the holiday season. School is a breeding ground for such germs, as is
the shopping mall filled with holiday shoppers. While it might be impossible to avoid bringing home these unwanted holiday guests, it’s not impossible to fight them off once they do get home. Employ electrolyzed water technology that suppresses airborne bacteria and germs while eliminating unpleasant odors in the home. Use a HEPA filtration system to remove 99.97% of airborne particles and allergens. • Circulate indoor air. Stagnant air indoors can also increase the liklihood of cold and flu. Central heating can dry the body out and lead to dehydration, making it harder for the body to flush out poisons and germs during the winter months. • Get outdoors. Even if the weather outside is frightful, it can be beneficial to spend some time outdoors during the winter months. • Squeeze in some daily exercise. While the holiday season is certainly hectic, adults and kids alike should still find time to fit in daily exercise. Kids might get their daily dose in gym class, but adults need to make time as well. Exercise can prove a great means to relieving holiday stress, and a body that’s strong and fit will prove more capable of defending itself against airborne germs and bacteria.

PAINTED FALL LEAF You’ll Need Leaves Washable paint Paper Paintbrushes 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Set out a piece of paper. Grab a leaf and add a drop of paint from three or four different colors to the back side of it. Take your paintbrush and spread the paint out, but careful not to blend the colors too much. Turn the leaf over onto the paper and press down. You may have to repeat this step several times to get the right leaf print. If you have too much paint, you will not be able to see the leaf’s natural vein patterns. Peel up the leaf to reveal your very own painted leaf. Set aside to dry. Once it’s dry, you can frame them and decorate your home for the fall season.
ICICLE ORNAMENTS You’ll need: metallic pipe cleaners pony beads a thread for hanging 1. 2.
3. 4.
Thread a pipe cleaner through beads. To stop the beads from sliding off the end of the pipe cleaner, twist the pipe cleaner around the bottom bead a couple of times, and do the same at the top end once the last bead is on. To give your icicle a spiral effect, have your little one wind the pipe cleaner around a pencil, and then slide it off, and stretch it out a bit. Finish by slipping a length of thread through the top bead, and knot to secure it.
NEW YEARS PARTY HAT
You’ll need: construction paper or cardstock paper stapler tape gluestick scissors hole punch (optional) crayons or markers 1. 2. 3. 4.
Create a cone shape out of construction paper. Decorate cone using the confetti, markers, or crayons. Cut out circles into a spiral shape. Tape the end of the spirals to back side of the top center point of the hat. The curls of the spiral will come out the top of the hat.

Activities
Celebrating New Years Eve with Children New Year’s Eve is one of the most festive nights of the year, when friends and families gather to count down the waning moments of the year as they anticipate the fun times ahead in the year to come. While adults tend to look forward to New Year’s Eve festivities more than children, there are ways parents can ring in the New Year with their kids. • Invite kids into the kitchen. New Year’s Eve festivities often include food, so why not invite youngsters into the kitchen to cook alongside you? Kids may not be interested in preparing the main course, but let kids get involved when baking the night’s more delectable treats, like cookies and cakes. Little ones can choose their favorite treats and then help Mom and Dad prepare those treats for guests coming over to join in the festivities. Decorate cakes and cookies with a New Year’s Eve theme. • Pick funny resolutions out of a hat. New Year’s resolutions are a big part of the holiday, and families who want to add some fun to this tradition can sit down and write their own funny resolutions. Keep the resolutions you write down to yourself, place each person’s ideas in a hat and then pick them out before the kids go to bed or right after the clock strikes midnight, whichever happens to come first. • Make a New Year’s pinata. Many people love to watch the ball drop from Time’s Square in New York City on New Year’s Eve.
Celebrants can bring a taste of this beloved tradition into their own homes come New Year’s Eve by creating a pinata that looks exactly like the ball in Time’s Square. Fill the ball with treats and games for youngsters, who can take chances trying to break the pinata once the clock strikes midnight or earlier if they aren’t likely to still be awake by the time the new year begins. • Make predictions for the year to come. Another fun and wholesome New Year’s Eve activity parents can enjoy with their children is making predictions for the year to come. Ask young sports fans to predict which teams will win championships in their respective leagues while encouraging other youngsters to share their predictions on awards shows or other popular social events for the coming year. Younger kids might not be able to make such specific predictions, so ask them to write down what they hope to see happen in the new year. • Ring in the new year under the stars. Families who live in warm climates might want to forgo television countdowns in favor of spending the final hours of the year under the stars. A New Year’s Eve camping trip is a great way for families to bond and spend time together at the end of what is often a hectic time of year. Instead of hoisting champagne or sparkling cider at the stroke of midnight, share some s’mores and hot chocolate around the campfire as everyone gazes up at the stars.

Allegro PiAno Music makes an important impact on how we think, how we feel, and how we believe. It plays a role in the development of children from the strains of the first lullaby. Music enters a child’s life from experiences in the family, from the media, as a part of religious worship, in school curriculum, and in play. In addition to its social value, recent research suggests that music also is important for intellectual development. Through piano study the child can learn much about the process of learning and develop an awareness of how self-discipline and daily practice can improve skills. The joy of musical expression and building self-esteem are also enhanced by combining muscular, visual and aural development. Allegro Piano Studio of San Antonio has been in business since 1999. Teachers are qualified with many years of experience. 210-364-4415 • 11230 West Ave, Ste 2108, San Antonio, TX www.allegropiano.net
The Natural Bridge Caverns are the largest known commercial caverns in the U.S. state of Texas. The name was derived from the 60 ft natural limestone slab bridge that spans the amphitheater setting of the cavern’s entrance. The caverns are located near the city of San Antonio, Texas in the Texas Hill Country next to the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, a drive-through wildlife safari park. The caverns feature several unique speleothems and other geological formations. The temperature inside the cave is 70 degrees year-round and the humidity rate is a constant 99%. The deepest part of the public tour is 180 feet below the surface. The caverns are still very active and considered living. Due to the porosity of the limestone, rainwater travels downwards through the layers of rock, where it dissolves out calcite, a weak mineral that makes up all of the speleothems at Natural Bridge Caverns.
