Your Best Energy Are we crazy, or is this just crazy?......

Up before dawn, meals prepped, kids dropped at school and then off to work - where the high gear, high demand frenzy continues. The evening is a crawl to the finish line after hauling kids to basketball/soccer/ dance practice (perhaps all of those noted in one night), driving-through for dinner, doing last-minute homework, and collapsing into bed for a repeat of this process in the days that follow. Upon reflection of what we tackle as parents, it is truly amazing what we are capable of making happen, but at what point does it begin to work against us…and them? Of the many consequences to consider, we can all end up feeling like we’ve survived another day; like we have checked the boxes of our to do list but checked out on any level of meaningful engagement. Worse yet, we are teaching our children through our role-modeling that hurried, overscheduled, and wear-yourself-out is the way to get through life. What if we slowed down, simplified, and plugged into our lives in a way that truly feels like living? 6

www.hillcountryparents.com

Create space – Strategically plan the day by taking inventory of what is on the schedule/agenda/to-do list, and consider, “Do I really need to tackle all of these things today? Can someone else help me with that item or can it possibly wait until tomorrow?” Without this time for reflection, everything can begin to feel urgent, and this immediacy in getting it all done only adds to our overload and stress. Take this strategy a step further by proactively scheduling the personal time needed first, even if it’s just time to breathe, and schedule everything else around this precious recovery time. Recruit help – There are many people in our life that could possibly lend a helping hand, starting with our own children. Can they make their own lunches the night before? Can a teen grab some milk and other items on his/her way home from school? Not only does this support the needs of the household, but it teaches them kindness, helpfulness, and the importance of taking care of themselves and others. Get up 15 minutes earlier – How we start our day lays the foundation for what is ahead. If the day starts like a gun going off in a race, then a race the day becomes. If it starts with calm, positive, and in control, we are much more likely to have that play out as the day goes on.

Start the day on a positive note – The simple fact that we wake up to enjoy another day is a reason to smile! Add a moment of reflection on other things or people for which we are grateful, meditation, a workout, making the bed…or bringing a cup of coffee to a spouse as a random act of kindness, playing music in the kitchen while preparing for the day, writing sweet little notes to kiddos to put in their school lunches…these are just a few of the many options that could generate positive emotional fuel for the day ahead.

Disconnect to connect – Life is a series of precious moments…how many are missed because of technology? Being connected to our cell phones 24/7 can create a disconnection with what is going on right here, right now, and the constant barrage of information that comes with using these devices can contribute significantly to the overload we feel. This may come as a surprise, but the average person checks their phone 150 times a day. If we factor at least one minute for every check of the phone, this is two and a half hours of our day potentially wasted. What could be done with a little of that time back? Consider the opportunities at work or with friends and

family that could help to slow down the crazy technology train and allow more engagement and connection… especially when it matters. Simplify – Contrary to what we may think at times, we cannot do it all… at least not all at the same time. Are there times when saying no would enable us to say yes to the life we want for ourselves and our families? Are there priorities that we want to be able to give our full and best energy to, and other things/people/ activities that need to wait? Being mindful and fiercely protective of the balance we need and want could enable us to not just do but make an even greater difference. Despite what we sometimes think, one hundred percent of the choices we make day to day are our own to choose. Taking accountability and making choices that align with what we want, ensuring that we aren’t overcomplicating or overburdening ourselves in what we take on, and being in charge of our life vs. life taking charge of us, are some of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves and our families. What are some new choices that could have a meaningful impact for you? How to Get Your Child Ready for a Successful School Year Summer is swiftly coming to an end and already many school systems are starting back for the beginning of another year. Lots of children approach this time of year with a feeling of elation-the chance to see friends and favorite teachers lights up their faces. But for others, the beginning of the school year can be a time of anxiety almost equal to that of the parents. Here are some helpful tips on how to begin the school year ready so that your child can be successful all year long. • If your school system has an open-house or pre-registration, take every opportunity of this and attend. This is a chance to meet your child’s teachers and help your child find their way around the school. Even if they have attended this school for years, take advantage and show them around since

16

www.hillcountryparents.com

many school systems are experiencing heavy turnover and your child may find the teacher who was in Room 105 may not be there anymore. Also, this is a great way to show your child that education matters to you. • Once you receive the school’s calendar, program the important dates into your smart phone, or buy a dayplanner to keep track of these. Be sure to know about holidays, progress reports, report cards, and early release days. The last is truly important as these are often set aside for parent conferences. • Set up your home computer for your child. Set up a special folder in “My Documents” just for them so that they can save all of their important papers and essays. Also, set up a section in your internet bookmarks just for your child. Be sure to include educational websites such as research sites and tutoring sites. If your child is in high school, the OWL website at Purdue University is a good one to set aside for all things related to writing. But also make sure that you get math websites set aside for the purpose of practice and drills.

powerful learning environment. Our educational model includes: accelerated liberal arts, math, and science studies, as well as an introduction to subjects like Mandarin Chinese and engineering in Kindergarten. One of the most unique aspects of the BASIS Curriculum is the Connections course; it ties multiple subjects together to help students see the links between academic subjects and real world issues. BASIS students are given an opportunity to be themselves, to let their true spirits and passions fly, and are given the best environment to do so.

While many primary schools place two teachers per classroom, the BASIS charter school two-teacher model is unique. In our model, one teacher is a Subject Expert Teacher (SET), and one is a Learning Expert Teacher (LET). The SET is just that: a teacher with a minimum four-year degree in their respective area of expertise, while a LET usually has a degree in education or early childhood education. So imagine that your first grade student is learning math from a teacher with a mathematics degree, while your second grade student’s Language Arts class is taught by a teacher with an advanced English degree. These educators, who are both passionate and experienced in their fields, create a 20

Extracurricular Activities Can Help Your Teen Prepare for the Real World Involvement in academic and athletic extracurricular activities is a big part of your teen’s high school years. It gives them a chance to express themselves by participating in one of the various programs the school or your community offers. It’s true that this is an excellent way to help teens make friends with like-minded peers while learning valuable social skills. However, the benefits don’t stop when they walk across the stage and receive their diploma. Many students will go on to enter the work place or further their education. It is in these places that the skills they learn will give them the edge they need to make their way in an adult world. • Team Work: One of the biggest things employers look for in job candidates is their willingness to work as a team. Team work is often emphasized in college and universities classrooms where professors know and therefore teach its importance in the real world. What can prepare your son or daughter more for teamwork than actually being part of a team? Being part of a team helps them hone the skills necessary to interact with their peers in a respectful manner. 26

• Goals: As a member of a sports team or club, your child will be responsible for meeting individual or group goals. For this reason, extracurricular activities are an excellent way to help your teen learn the fundamentals of goal building, something that is necessary in the work place. Goals help the individual keep track of where they are and where they would like to be. • Responsibilities: As an active member of a team or club, individuals are held responsible for things like attendance and partici®

pation. When a member doesn’t respect their responsibilities, they will face consequences much like an adult would in the work place. Failure to be responsible can get you benched or suspended from team activities, and in the workplace it could get you fired. Students who learn to take their responsibility seriously will carry that into their careers. • Respect for Rules: Sure you may have rules that your son or daughter must follow, but it’s the outside world that really teaches them the importance of following rules. Rules, much like responsibilities, can make or break a person's career. When rules are not followed on the field it will result in penalties that will effect their play. Likewise, rules in the work place must be followed to make sure the week's end brings a pay check and not a pink slip. • Conflict Resolution: When two or more people work together for a common purpose there are bound to be conflicts. Since each individual sees the world through their own eyes, not everyone will approach problems the same way. This is very true when it comes to extracurricular activities. While one student may feel a particular play is the best option, another student may believe there is a better way to reach the goal. Ultimately, for the team or 28

club to succeed there will have to be a conflict resolution. This is a very important part of work place success and therefore learning it early on can save your teen from problems in the future. • Resume Building: Whether it's their college application or a job resume, extracurricular activities along with academic performance will put your teen at an advantage. To employers, involvement in these shows the individual was able to balance work and play. In other words, they were able to take on various projects at the same time, something that is very important in the work force. By: Jennifer Wasilewski
