Bonding Together in the Struggle by: Taylor Abrahamsen
2020 has become a meme itself in the many challenging differences from our normal experiences. Our holiday season will not escape being impacted, but we can preserve the joys of the season and renewal of the year with intention. A transition in perspective to the long view and the blessings these memories of time together can serve to your family, can help make those dirty piles of laundry and dishes lose their grasp on causing frustration. Not being able to adventure into the world as much as we once did create obstacles, but it does not mean we can’t find ways to enjoy time together, and perhaps create some new traditions in the process. Studies by The American College of Pediatricians show the benefits of family time ripples through every member. Young children learn proper playing techniques and communication when interacting with siblings and parents. Teenagers are proven to share more, act out less, and perform better with adequate time spent with their parents. Even the adults can benefit. Being stuck at home can seem like a boring position to still be in. However, finding a new hobby together as a family such as cooking, baking, gardening, crafting, there are endless possibilities, can create a solution providing fulfillment. Sharing “risks” or new experiences together is a great way to bond as well. Consider the fun of not watching but sharing a first experience with your child. No matter what it is, growing flowers, learning to cook, road tripping, or even skydiving, you can both experience it together! Building the bond of adventure and fun makes the family bond and trust stronger. While we are still in the season of taking pause to our many normal activities in life why not invest that time in your family relationships. A struggle of normal life can often be the need to fill all of our time, and our children’s time, with activities but just as important is the ability to disconnect and be present in the moment. Psychology, Health, and Medicine published a study showing adults who commit to uninterrupted leisure time with their families can lower stress and the negative health impacts stress can lead to. Less stress and more time to watch your family as they grow, talk about a win, win! 6

Especially in the pandemic world, lowering our stress levels is now a necessity. Self-care and lowered stress levels provide the ability to take care of others. Volunteering is another way to help your family share together while redirecting to what matters most. The need is greater than ever now and there are options to serve our communities in person as well as remotely to fit your comfort level. Help your family understand how fortunate they are for everything they consider normal parts of life and share together in your gratitude. The challenges present today make it hard to not focus on the negatives we are experiencing. Trying to see the things we are grateful for in life can serve to help pull us out of that negative thought trap. Research by Positive Psychology has proven that gratitude provides an overflow of benefits when practiced. Even the task of simply journaling for 5 minutes a day on what you are grateful for can enhance your long-term happiness by over 10%! The emotional, health, social, and personality benefits are not just for adults. Consider learning how to notice your gratitude alongside with your children. In the world of social media with things so negative, think of the benefits the skill of noting what we are grateful can be to them in their growing years. Learning how to practice gratitude exists in so many mediums, there are great books and podcasts purposed on it or you could even start one to share on your journey! No matter the factors we can’t control in this season, we can make the best of the experience and turn it into a net benefit, if we put forward intention to focus on growth and time with our loved ones. Let’s come out of this challenge fortified and strengthened.

While we can’t bring you the full festival this year, we wanted to keep the decade long tradition of WinterFest in Stone Oak alive and still give the kids a chance to feel the magic of the holidays! Story Time and Photos with Santa, Saturday, Dec. 5th at North Central Baptist Hospital – Tickets will be sold in time slots so we can ensure a safe, socially distanced event. Kids will get to tell Santa what they want for Christmas and then get a photo with Santa and Mrs. Claus 6 feet behind them. They will then get to stay and enjoy Storytime with Santa. Plus everyone will get a WinterFest Swag Bag with goodies from local partners. You can also choose to watch Storytime with Santa virtually and receive a pre-produced Frame where you can add your child’s photo so they can still have a picture with Santa (virtual guests will have the opportunity to pick up swag bags without getting out of their cars; information is available once you purchase your ticket).

Here in Texas we enjoy the good fortune of mild winters that make life easy to accommodate around the weather. We all recount the excitement during the once in a blue moon snow we receive or the ice days that shut down our roadways and schools. One thought that can be lost in the excitement is what to do to keep your family entertained if everyone is stuck indoors! Here are some great ideas, many that use things found around the house, to help keep your kids amused without causing destruction.
Do you have a rambunctious little one, a large box, and some spare battery powered lights around? Then get ready for your youngster to show off their imagination! Make a new world, perhaps Santas’ village or a magic time machine, inside the box with lights and colors. It’s entertaining to see the minds of children as they explore and create, even the older kids may want to join in on the fun. Connect multiple boxes together or next to each other with cut out windows to make a city for everyone to take part in creating! It will take time to color it all, filling up the afternoon with creativity and exploration, and giving you time to knock out anything on your list. 10

Sumo Style! Perfect for any age to enjoy this easy to create game which inspires hours of entertainment as long as the pillow holds fluff. All you need is large shirts and pillows to stuff in a sumo belly and the kids will laugh their way around the house waddling back and forth. Concerned about someone getting too competitive? Youtube has some great videos of Sumo Wrestlers practicing without contact, and bonus: it could help them learn about another culture from around the world!
Interested in burning some energy
while staying indoors? Time to bring out the homemade ice skates! Strap some wax paper onto the feet of your athlete with a rubber band or string to secure it and they are ready to glide. This fun indoor activity works on rugs, tile, and hardwood floors. It’s a hilarious take on winter sports, that is the perfect fit for fun and laughter to fill your home on even the coldest of days.
Do members of your family prefer more to work with their hands? Winter crafts are a perfect fit! These homemade snowflakes are easy to bring to life with items in the cupboard: all your need is glue, pasta, and a sprinkle of glitter Begin by laying out the design, glue into place each delicate piece, and once it dries, coat with a brush of glue, then make it sparkle! What a fun way to create something together, while letting each member of your family splash on their own style.
Another exciting craft perfect for a winter freeze are popsicle stick ice skaters! Using markers, have everyone decorate a popsicle stick person to be ready for a winter ride. Once they are ready for a temperature drop, fill a ramakin with water and cover with foil, puncture the top with the popsicle figure so it stands, and freeze. After the water freezes, gently remove from the molds and place on a metal tray and let them take off across the ice!
Working with your family to have indoor fun can seem stressful, but with some time to prep supplies before hand, it can be an easy unknown to tackle! Let your children in on the process and decide which game will come first. No matter which direction you chose to go the best way to ensure a memory for your family with indoor fun is to let your inner child come out!
