HEAD OF SENIOR LEARNING COMMUNITY

Consider your future today. At this very moment, you are setting the foundation for the rest of your life. Every decision you make now has the ability to shape your future. Hillcrest Christian College is a place where your hopes and dreams can be nurtured and developed, and where we challenge every student to strive for excellence. We encourage you to be intentional in your decision making, so that what you do now will lead to the future you are dreaming of. If your goal is to reach the very highest academic outcomes, or study overseas, you can achieve this at Hillcrest. If your dream is to achieve excellence in your academics, and in your chosen sport, or build on your sporting success, you can achieve this at Hillcrest. There are countless opportunities for international study, sporting pursuits, and careers after Year 12, and navigating through these options can be complex. At Hillcrest, we have a dedicated Pathways Team who can guide you through this process, to help you make the best choices for reaching your personal goals. We have also designed several Pathways to provide possible avenues for overseas study, post Year 12. These Pathways start as early as Year 8, and allow you to engage in learning experiences that will enrich your learning now, and help you shape your future. Accessing international universities and colleges requires careful planning, and banking your results starts in Year 9, for a maximum of four years. Our Pathways are outlined in this booklet, along with other key information, and I encourage you to read this information carefully. The information in this booklet is a guide and families must always check with the relevant institutions for current requirements. Build a strong foundation with Hillcrest, and you will pave the way to your dream future. Your journey starts today. Dirk van Bruggen Head of Senior Learning Community (Years 7 - 12)

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE The Academic Excellence Program provides students the opportunity to gain admission into a range of universities and colleges in the United States, or overseas, and should be considered by students wishing to undertake study in conjunction with their sporting pursuits. The Academic Excellence Pathway is suitable for Hillcrest students seeking an alternative to studying at a Queensland university, as students who complete this program often gain admission into a top international university. It is the responsibility of the student and their family to research the institutions they wish to apply to. ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

PLANNING FOR THIS PATHWAY

To qualify for this option, students need to achieve high academic grades from Years 9 - 12, and must be selfmotivated and determined. Students are expected to achieve an average grade score in the 90s, including an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) of above 99, and ideally gain Academic Honours in their subjects.

Students wishing to study in America via this program need to plan their studies from the commencement of Year 9, as the entry requirements consider a four year program from Years 9 - 12. Completing up to six subject subjects in Year 12 allows students to broaden their subject choices, and creates flexibility when their ATAR is determined. To successfully undertake this program, students must work in a sustained and focused way for the duration of their senior High School studies.

ADMISSIONS INFORMATION Academic admission to American universities is more complex than simply completing a QTAC application, and many institutions require applicants to complete their online application, including academic reports, a resume, personal essay, and a recommendation report and reference from Hillcrest. Students must apply directly to the institution/s they are hoping to study at, and should note that even if all academic requirements are met, admission is not guaranteed so students are encouraged to also apply to Australian universities.

Example: • English (Years 9 - 12) / English Honours (Year 12); • Mathematics Methods (Mathematics B) (Years 10 – 12); • Three elective subjects from Science, Social Sciences, Engineering, Specialist Mathematics, or the Arts; • University studies – e.g. Griffith Exercise Science; • Accelerated Subject (e.g. Studying Year 11 English in Year 10).

ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS

TYPICAL COURSE

Many reputable Ivy League colleges and universities offer Academic Scholarships to international applicants, covering 100% of tuition fees, room and board.

Year 12 students undertaking this Program have a higher subject load than other pathways, which means less study lessons, and more work to complete. This requires a significant amount of commitment and effort to ensure students meet the demands of the Program. Many students in this Program enrol in five full subjects in Year 12, and choose to undertake extension or university subjects, in conjunction with their High School studies.

These scholarships are usually income tested, and are offered if combined parental income is under USD$65,000 per year. Parental income information may be given in the application form, so that the university can determine the amount of financial aid they will offer to the successful applicant. Other universities may also award scholarships based on academic or athletic merit, or a combination of both. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Application requirements for each institution may vary, however, most universities and colleges typically require students to achieve the following: • • •

Complete 16 core year-long courses; Graduate with a 3.0 GPA or above; Achieve an SAT/ACT score that meets the institution’s requirements. Most top universities require students to sit SAT subject tests and the general SAT exam.

IMPORTANT DATES Applications Open: 1 August, of Year 12 Applications Close: 1 January, after Year 12 completion Admission Offers Released: End of March.

NCAA GRADE POINT AVERAGE CALCULATIONS • • • •

The NCAA Eligibility Centre calculates your grade point average (GPA), based on the grades you earn in NCAA-approved core courses. Only your best grades from the required number of NCAA core courses will be used. Grades from additional core courses will only be used if they improve your grade point average. To calculate quality points for each core course, multiply the following points for each grade by the amount of credit earned for the class: A: 4 points B: 3 points C: 2 points D: 1 point To calculate your estimated core course grade point average, divide the total number of quality points for all of your core courses by the total number of corecourse units you have completed. Students must achieve a grade point average of a C, or higher, to be eligible to meet the minimum 2.30 GPA required by the NCAA, however, many Division I Colleges require a higher GPA to meet their academic standards.

SPORTING PATHWAY: NAIA COLLEGES The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), is a small group of colleges who offer a Competitive Athletes’ Program within their four year undergraduate degrees. The NAIA is not a stepping stone to transfer to an NCAA Division I or II College, but rather an athletic competition that students participate in, while attending a less academically-rigorous institution. This Pathway provides students with the opportunity to enter a range of colleges in the United States, offering early or guaranteed entry, and a taste of university life. It is a viable option for students who have good grades, but their athletic profile may not be strong enough for the NCAA pathway. Options through this pathway are limited and should be considered carefully. EXAMPLE

APPLY ONLINE: https://web3.ncaa.org/ecwr3/ ADMISSIONS INFORMATION • Register during, or shortly after, completing Year 12; • To participate in NAIA athletics, the NAIA Eligibility Centre must certify your eligibility; • The cost to register with the NAIA Eligibility Centre is $120. SPORTING PATHWAY: NJCAA COLLEGES The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) is a two year college program designed to provide an entry point into the United States for students pursuing a pathway in sport. Junior or Community Colleges are equivalent to an Australian TAFE system, and not a university, enabling students to complete a two year Associate Degree, and transfer this credit to a four year undergraduate degree program, upon successful completion of the Associate Degree. The options through this Pathway are less demanding in terms of their academic, athletic and financial requirements, and should be carefully considered. Students must expect that this experience will differ from a university experience, and often there is no on-campus accommodation, and the campus culture may be significantly different to university life. This program is a viable option for students who have not met requirements for NCAA or NAIA Universities and Colleges. EXAMPLE

APPLY ONLINE: www.NJCAA.org ADMISSIONS INFORMATION A student must have completed Year 11 in high school to receive an official recruiting visit by a member from an NJCAA College. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS • Applicants must graduate from High School and have their QLD Certificate of Education authorised by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA); • Students are advised to sit the SAT exam and submit their results to the Junior or Community College, to ensure they are enrolled into the Associate Degree program, rather than a lesser qualification; • Students must achieve a minimum 2.0 GPA; • The NJCAA institution must certify the student’s eligibility. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Please read this information carefully in preparation for pursuing an Athletic Excellence Program at Hillcrest Christian College. OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES

OUR ATHLETES’ CODE OF CONDUCT

CHRISTIAN VALUES

STRIVING TO EXCEL

The most significant aspect of the Excellence Program is our commitment to the development of Christian values in our student athletes. Sportsmanship, work ethic, leadership and teamwork are the cornerstones of our program. These are identified through the biblical Fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5: 22-23;

We accept that we will not always win, but we succeed when we continually strive to do our very best;

ARTICULATED PROGRAMS The Excellence Program supports the career and sporting aspirations of each athlete and includes the potential to gain post-secondary international sporting scholarships; ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT Academic achievement will be expected, promoted, supported and celebrated throughout the Hillcrest Sporting Athlete Excellence Program; QUALITY COACHES The coaches in the Program will demonstrate a commitment to our shared vision through their leadership, professionalism, support of our programs and participation in the wider sporting community; COMMUNITY SUPPORT The Program will serve as a catalyst that creates pride within our school, and establishes consistent support from our wider community; INCREASED OPPORTUNITIES The Program will offer numerous opportunities for student involvement and success. This includes competition locally, nationally and internationally, refereeing and administration, and service to others; COMPETITIVE EXCELLENCE Members of the Program will demonstrate a level of commitment that enables our teams and individuals to consistently compete at the highest level. AIMS OF THE PROGRAM The Hillcrest Christian College Athletic Excellence Program focusses on the students’ needs for physical, academic and spiritual growth. The core purpose of the Program is to offer our student athletes an opportunity to develop their: • Self-discipline; • Commitment to achieve; • Respect for community; • Spirit of hard work and sacrifice.

SPORTSMAN-LIKE ATTITUDE We accept winning and defeat like true sportsmen, and women, acknowledging that we have done our best. We treat coaches, players, referees and supporters as we would hope to be treated and display positive social traits, including emotional control, honesty, cooperation, integrity and dependability; CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT We aim to continually improve our skills and attitudes, and strive to be more Christ-like in all we do. As athletes, we set goals and work hard to reach those goals. ELIGIBILITY AND EXPECTATIONS OF THE PROGRAM ATHLETIC Athletes must meet the relevant selection criteria as defined for their chosen sport, and may include: • Participation and representation of the College at a state or national level; • Maintaining a regular commitment to training, games and related sport activities; • Continuous support for coaches and managers. ACADEMIC Students are expected to maintain their academic and athletic performance, and typically a student must achieve a minimum C grade (or equivalent) across their various courses. This must be maintained each semester and will be reviewed by the participant’s mentor each term. Athletes must be enrolled in the required number of courses each semester, to maintain their position in the Program. COLLEGE COMMUNITY All student athletes must adhere to the expectations of the College, as outlined in the Community Information Booklet. Representing Hillcrest is a privilege, and therefore all athletes must maintain the highest standards of behaviour, dress and community behaviour as required by the College and their sporting programs.

PROBATION ATHLETIC The College expects athletes to: • Abide by the College Players’ Code of Conduct; • Notify the College through the appropriate channels of any absences, evidenced with a parental note, phone call, or text to the coach; • Be enthusiastic actively participate, and be prepared to work hard at training sessions; • Represent the College at tournaments, games and events, as required; • Consult with your teacher/coach if you are facing difficulties with the Program. ACADEMIC Hillcrest reserves the right to place any Excellence Program athlete with one or more C, or lower grade, on academic probation. The athlete will then complete one assessment to improve their result(s) to the agreed level. If the athlete does not improve their results, they will be unable to participate until they meet the agreed standards. To maintain eligibility in the Excellence Program during a probation period, students will be required to maintain a weekly Academic, Behavioural or Community Standard progress report. This progress report must be signed by every teacher on their timetable – not just the classes they are struggling in. The report will record both current academic progress, as well as an ‘effort’ mark. The Probation Progress Report must be submitted to the student’s mentor each Friday for review. Eligibility will be discussed for the following week with the relevant coach, sports coordinator or Pathways administrator. Any athlete who is achieving between a C- and C+ will be placed on academic evaluation. These students may be required to attend after school tutorial sessions and actively seek assistance to increase their grades in the relevant subject(s). These students will be monitored weekly with the intent of helping them progress to an improved subject grade. Failure to meet these requirements will result in an immediate loss of eligibility for at least one week. During the first week of ineligibility, students are required to attend sports practice, but not participate. If a student is ineligible for a second consecutive week, they are not allowed to attend or participate. If a student’s ineligibility extends to three consecutive weeks, they will be removed from the team, pending a meeting with the SLC Leadership Team. If an athlete does not maintain these expectations in a positive and ongoing way, the College may implement a Probation Period during which the athlete may be withdrawn from training, and/or competitions until they can meet these expectations.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Sitting SAT and ACT exams are an entry requirement of many American institutions. The following information is a guide only and you should always review the most current information, before completing either of these tests. WHEN TO SIT THE ACT OR SAT EXAMS It is recommended to take the SAT and/or ACT (whichever is offered in your region/area) at least once, or even twice, by the end of Year 12.

QUEENSLAND REQUIREMENTS FOR USA ENTRY (subject to change) QUEENSLAND SENIOR CERTIFICATE (QCE) Your grade point average (GPA) will be calculated by averaging your “Level of Achievement,” by the “Number of Units” for each core course recorded under the “Authority Subject” heading. These are listed on your leaving certificate and achieved by the completion of Year 12. The points generated by these calculations will be added together, and divided by the total number of units achieved in all core courses recorded under the “Authority Subject” heading. NOTE: Courses labelled “Authority Registered Subjects” will not be used in the grade point average calculation. Achievement of the core course requirement will be determined by reviewing the distribution of course work listed on your semester-by-semester reports. Courses must satisfy the definition of a core course as specified by University Entrance. Only those subjects where a grade of D or higher was obtained, will be used in the GPA calculation. Grades from the semester-by-semester reports and tertiary certificates will not be used in the grade-point average calculation. • Students who initially enrol full time in a collegiate institution on or after August 1, 2018, must present a 2.300 or higher core-course grade point average on a 4.000 (4 high) scale, to be eligible to compete at a Division I institution in the initial year of full-time enrolment. • Students who initially enrol full time in a collegiate institution on or after 1 August 2018, must present a 2.200 or higher core-course grade point average on a 4.000 (4 high) scale, to be eligible to compete at a Division II institution in the initial year of full-time enrolment. • Students who initially enrol full time in a collegiate institution on or after August 1, 2018, must present a 2.000 or higher core-course grade point average on a 4.000 (4 high) scale to be eligible to practice and receive athletically related financial aid at a Division II institution, in the initial year of full-time enrolment.
