Squad Structure The Hillcrest Basketball Program is divided into two programs with three distinct levels in each program. The Participation & Development Program (PDP) is generally aligned with the Junior Learning Community (JLC), while the Basketball Excellence Program (BEP) is aligned with the Senior Learning Community (SLC). The Participation & Development Program is designed to provide opportunities for students in the JLC to both try basketball and develop skills in a non-competitive environment. The PDP is a user-pays program, with a term-by-term commitment. Information letters are emailed home each term, outlining fees and a weekly schedule. Online registration and accompanying payment must occur for each student to be enrolled . More information, online registration and payment link that can also be found on the College website in the Parent Lounge. Please be aware, a minimum number of students is required for the activity to commence. A maximum number of 30 students may register for these activities; subsequent students are placed on a waiting list. If your child is going to be absent from these activities, please inform the JLC Office.
SPARKS The Sparks program exists for students between Prep - Year 1 and aims to build the fundamentals of Basketball in a fun, games-based environment. The Sparks co-curricular program is designed to offer parents a cost effective, ‘safe’ and professional place where your child can grow, develop and find belonging. Limited focus is placed on competition, with students encouraged to participate in an inclusive environment that celebrates participation.
FLAMES The Flames Program is for students in Years 2 - 4. It continues building on the foundations of the Sparks program and extends the students in the fundamental skills and game play of basketball.
EXPLOSIONS The Explosions program is for all students in Years 5 and 6. Students begin their development the ‘Hillcrest way,’ learning the basic structures and team plays that will make them successful as a Hillcrest Basketballer. Students refine the fundamental skills introduced in Sparks, and further enhanced in our Flames Program, but are exposed to more complex skills that further extend their capacities. In Term Two, expressions of interest from Explosions participants will be invited from those students who wish to be considered for entry into the Future Development Program within the Basketball Excellence Program (BEP). The program coaches will identify students who have demonstrated potential, as well as a commitment to their development, for entry into the BEP. Upon acceptance of selection, and payment of the reduced BEP levy, these students will form the teams entered into the Gold Coast Invitational, Hillcrest’s tournament that is conducted every July. These students will then Hillcrest Christian College | Basketball Excellence Program

train with the BEP Freshman squad for Semester Two, and participate in games against local school teams. Students who wish to participate in the Participation and Development Program can join at any level and have the opportunity to both try the sport, and develop basketball skills. We encourage any program participant who then wishes to participate in organized games to contact the Heat Basketball Club to inquire about joining the club and playing in the Gold Coast City Regional Basketball Association competition. The Basketball Excellence Program is designed to provide opportunity for student athletes to pursue the development of their basketball skills and abilities in an elite team environment. The BEP has three levels, Freshman, Emerging and Opens. These squads are reflective of student age and general ability, which is ascertained through previous performances and training. Depending on the age of the squad and the timing of the year, students are allocated sub-team for scrimmage games and tournaments. These sub teams are referred to as ‘Hawks,’ ‘Hurricanes,’ ‘Hornets,’ and ‘Hammerheads,’ which are focused on distributing the skills and abilities of the squads. Three months out from major tournaments (CBSQ and ASC), trials occur and representative teams from each of the relevant squads are announced.
OPEN/EMERGING SQUAD The Open and Emerging Squads are comprised of the most talented and gifted basketballers in the Senior Learning Community, with the most elite making up the Open Boys and Open Girls teams. All students in the Open and Emerging Squads are given opportunities to represent the College at a variety of scrimmage games and formal tournaments. However, only the selected students who make the Open Boys and Open Girls teams represent Hillcrest at state and national championships. To qualify for nationals - ASC (Australian Schools Championships) they must win their way through the state competition, CBSQ (Champion Basketball School of Queensland) in the championship division.
FRESHMAN SQUAD The Freshman Squads at Hillcrest were introduced in 2016 as a strategic measure to nurture the youth development at the College. To be part of the Freshman Squads, students must not be turning older than 14 in the year of the program. The purpose of the Freshman Squads is to develop students in more complex structures often seen in the Senior and Emerging Squads. During Term 3, calls are made for students to trial for selection in our representative Freshman boys and girls teams to compete in the ASC, being held in Melbourne after the end of the school year, in early December. The majority of students in the Freshman Squads are in Years 7 – 9.

Students within the Senior Learning Community wishing to be considered as a member of the Open, Emerging, or Freshman squads in the program, will be required to complete the Basketball Excellence Program Application Form, included in the Appendix, indicating the squad they are requesting to be considered for selection to. Selectors will take into consideration a variety of factors, including attendance at training, including gym and skills sessions, individual skills and ability, teamwork, willingness to learn, attitude and discipline. The selection process will also be in close consultation with the Head of Senior Learning Community, to ascertain the maintenance of student academic standards and behaviour and attitude in the classroom environment, attendance at tutoring sessions, and initiation of academic support if required. Parents must also agree to making their child available for major tournaments and championships and the associated costs as a component to the selection process. Participants will be advised at the end of the selection process if their application was successful or declined. In order to guarantee your squad position, you will be required to sign an Acceptance with Terms and Conditions Form and return to the Sport Admin Office. If you decide not to accept this position, please notify us immediately so that another student may be offered a place on the squad.

Training Expectations and Attendance A training schedule is included in the appendix for your convenience. Please be aware that the training schedule changes each term. Current versions of the training schedule are uploaded to the College Website in the Parent Lounge, and on Hillcrest Basketball facebook group. Dress requirements for training are basketball shorts, reversible training singlet, and non-marking soled basketball boots. Student athletes in the SLC are encouraged to wear ankle guards and mouth guards; however, the final decision with these requirements is at the parent’s discretion. When training or games have finished, students must depart from the College wearing shoes and boys must wear a shirt. If a student athlete is going to be absent from a regular training session or scheduled game, advise your team coach or email basketball@hillcrest.qld.edu.au immediately, citing reason for absence.
Coaching Development All students within the Open Basketball Teams (over 15 years of age), must participate in a coaching and/or officiating course to bolster the depth of the future coaching staff of the College. These courses are free to all students and run regularly through the year. Alumni of the Basketball Program are often given opportunities for volunteer and, at times, are paid in positions of coaching and for refereeing.
Academic and Community Expectations All students within the Hillcrest Basketball Program are expected to maintain a suitable standard of academic progress and personal integrity (Hillcrest Cornerstones) while members of the Basketball Program. This is to develop them as a ‘whole athlete,’ which is the key to future College scholarships and general success as a basketballer and as an individual. These standards are actively monitored and reviewed by the Student Athlete Academic Advisor & Basketball Coordinator in conjunction with Head of Senior Learning Community and Heads of Faculty. Additional expectations on student’s engagement in the school community are details in the Player’s Code of Conduct and Student Contract, which you will find included in the Appendix at the back of this booklet. The student Contract is a binding contract that is often used as a tool to reflect on behavior, attitude and academic effort, and discussed as a line of corrective action which may include your status in the squad being shifted to a provisional status, or temporary or permanent disqualification from the Hillcrest Basketball squad. A copy of the Players Code of Conduct and Student Contract are included in the Appendix at the back of this booklet. All students participating in the Hillcrest Basketball Program are to complete a Student Contract before they can represent the College.

Champion Basketball School of Queensland (CBSQ) Basketball Queensland, in conjunction with Queensland School Sport and Queensland Secondary School Basketball, delivers the Champion Basketball School of Queensland (CBSQ) tournament in September each year. Held since 1974, the event attracts a great deal of interest from secondary schools across the state each year, with past years seeing in excess of 90 boys and girls teams competing across four divisions, including the Hillcrest Open Boys and Open Girls teams in Championship Divisions. CBSQ 2018 will be hosted by Logan City Council from Thursday 13 to Sunday 16 September at the following venues: • Insports Logan Metro - 357 Browns Plains Road, Crestmead (main Division 1 venue) • Insports Cornubia Park - 146 Bryants Road, Shailer Park (main Division 2 venue)
At this stage of planning accommodation has again been booked at Brisbane Gateway Resort, Rochedale. The players will be staying in self-contained cabins, fully supervised by accompanying adults including coaches, team managers, and a staff member. The additional cost for the players is $450. This fee includes transport, accommodation, food, and score bench duties. Transport will be in 12 seater mini buses. Parents will be rostered to provide coverage for score bench duties throughout the Championships, and will be refunded $25 for each game they cover bench duty for.
Australian Schools Championships (ASC) The ASC is the main focal point for Hillcrest’s Freshman and Emerging (U17) teams. Each year representative teams from these squads are invited to trial, and pending selection are announced to represent the College at the ASC, which will be held in Melbourne until at least 2018. Each year Hillcrest sends one Freshman and one Emerging (U17) team for both boys and girls (numbers dependent). Teams are announced three months prior to the tournament, in early September. Further to this, and pending the results of the Open Boys and Open Girls at CBSQ, the Open teams may also attend ASC in Championship Division. Student Athlete Eligibility To be eligible to qualify to participate at CBSQ students must have been enrolled and be a legitimate student with the College for three months prior to the tournament. To be eligible to qualify to participate at ASC in Participation Division, students must have been enrolled and be a legitimate student of the College for three months prior to the tournament. For Championship Division, students must have been enrolled and be legitimate of the College for three months prior to qualifications, that is prior to CBSQ.
Score Bench Officials – Scrimmage Games and Tournaments Basketball Administration Staff, Coaches or Team Managers are responsible for rostering parents on the score table for each game. The timing rules for games will determine the number of officials required on score table. Fully timed games require two parents (from each team) to fulfil score table duties. Running clock requires one parent from each team. The roster will be made available as soon as Tournaments or games are announced or confirmed so parents can advise availability. If parents are unable to fulfil their duties it is up to them to find a replacement, not the Team Manager. If any parent cannot perform their scheduled duty or find a suitable replacement they must pay the Team Manager $25.00 to find a replacement. The replacement parent will then be paid the $25.00, however this is not guaranteed (although we do encourage parents to help one another out and switch duties where possible). Unpaid score bench fines result in players being ineligible to take the court.

Major Fundraising Event – Hoops Mania Hoops Mania is Hillcrest Basketball’s major fundraising event. It has the capacity to allow each individual student to raise funds towards their Hillcrest Basketball related expenses through personal sponsorship. If embraced to its full potential, families can significantly reduce out of pocket expenses associated with state and national championships each year. The date for 2018 Hoops Mania is to be confirmed. Students participating in Hoops Mania, gain personal sponsorship per shot or made baskets and donations for the event. The monies are deposited with the Accounts Office and are allocated to that students account; think of it like a savings account. Money can then be allocated to Hillcrest Basketball related expenses during the year, or can be rolled over for use in future years at Hillcrest. This exciting event will see participants from Year 5 – 12 sign up to shoot continuous free throws during several rostered 30-60 minute time blocks of their choice, throughout a 24-hour period. All participants will combine together to keep the shots coming over the 24-hour timeframe. Using Hillcrest’s MPC, we will have 6 participants shooting at the same time. Over the 24-hour timeframe our aim is to shoot a collaborative total of over 53,000 baskets and surpass our 2016 accumulative total of 52, 579! Basketball Students within the Senior Learning Community are permitted to stay overnight. Students from Years 5-6 do not stay overnight, however are invited to place their names on the roster for sessions throughout the day and evening.
Terms and Conditions Please take note of the following Terms and Conditions for the Hoops Mania fund raising event:
Students raise personal sponsorships to help offset Hillcrest Basketball related expenses. Unused funds can be rolled over for each year they are a Hillcrest Student. 10% of funds raised is given to Student Representative Council to help support charities, 90% is available for individual student’s Hillcrest Basketball related expenses. Student personal fundraising monies can be accessed for Hillcrest Basketball related expenses (CBSQ, ASC, Basketball Uniforms etc.). Students may use their personal balance for any school based representative basketball. This includes South Coast Team and/or Queensland Team. Students may not use their personal balance for anything outside of the basketball program (school fees, school uniforms or other sporting programs etc.). Students may request to transfer funds between members of their family who are also within the Basketball Program. However, they are not able to transfer funds to other unrelated students within the Basketball Program. Any use of funds is to be applied for through the Basketball Administrator. Social Media - Facebook Hillcrest Basketball has a private Facebook group called Hillcrest Basketball. We welcome all players and parents to submit a request join and be a member of this group. This is a closed group and is for the benefit of parents and players, not for the broader general community. This is a main avenue of communication, where we advise changes and cancellations to the training schedule, advise about upcoming scrimmage games, events and tournaments, we post pictures, game results, and encouraging and motivational quotes. When it is called for, members are often tagged in comments if a response or further action is required. We have an open line of communication through this media, and all questions and queries are invited and responded to as quickly as possible. After all, if you have a question, there is probably someone else with the same question, so feel free to ask. As students are a part of this group, we do ask that all posts, comments and responses are within the ethos of the College. Hillcrest Basketball has an account on Instagram. Search and follow Hillcrest.Basketball.

Basketball Student Contract I acknowledge that by being accepted into the Hillcrest Basketball Squad that I have been provided with a special opportunity to continue with both my personal academic studies and participate and train in Basketball to the highest possible level within the College. I understand that to maintain my position within the squad my performance in both areas must be of a required standard as deemed by the Director of Student Performance and Innovation, and the Head Coach, in consultation with the Team Coach, Principal, Director of Sport and Co-curricular, Head of Senior Years and/or Director of Student Pathways. Specifically: I will attend all classes and activities within my timetable. I will follow the school guidelines as stated in the College Behaviour Management Policy. I will complete all homework tasks, assignments and exams, and will seek assistance if having difficulties. I will abide by the College Players Code of Conduct. I will notify the College, through the appropriate channels, anytime that I will be absent. All absences must be evidenced by a parental note and phone call/text to the basketball coach. I understand that absence is the primary reason players do not fulfil their potential. I will do my best, be enthusiastic and actively participate and be prepared to work hard at training sessions. I will welcome every challenge, whether it is in preparation, fitness, skills and drills or competition, to become the best student basketball player I can be. I will represent the College at Champion Basketball School of Queensland, Australian School’s Championships, tournaments, and games which the College enters. I will consult with my teacher/coach before any difficulties I am having become problems. Throughout the duration of this year I will ensure that I uphold the name of the College. I will aim to represent the College with pride and distinction. I will be attired in the appropriate College uniform, basketball uniform and training gear. For Australian School’s Championships - ASC (where applicable): Year 12 students representing the school at the ASC must abide by the school’s Behaviour Management Policy from the period between graduation and the conclusion of the tournament. Public displays that place the school in disrepute at Schoolies or other post-graduation celebrations will, under the consideration of the Principal and Head Coach, make the student ineligible to compete. Failure to comply with any of these conditions above will result in the teacher/coach, in consultation with the Director of Sport & Co-curricular and the Head of Senior Learning Community, deciding on a line of corrective action which may include your status in the squad being shifted to a provisional status, or temporary or permanent disqualification from the Hillcrest Basketball squad.

Hoops Mania – Letter of Introduction
18 January 2018
To Whom It May Concern, Subject: Hoop Mania – 2018 Each year, Hillcrest Basketball runs its annual major fundraiser to assist in the further development of the Basketball program. This program is designed to offset the costs of Basketball Tours, Uniforms and other Hillcrest Basketball Related expenses during a child’s life as a Hillcrest Basketballer. The event will be held at Hillcrest Christian College and requires students to take turns in shooting continuously for 24 hours across 6 basketball hoops. The aim is to successfully shoot 53, 000 baskets. This letter is to advise that your donation would be greatly appreciated to assist our students and basketball community. Within your donation, 90% will be available for the child seeking your donation to use within the basketball program for their entire life as a Hillcrest student. The remaining 10% will be donated to a charity. This will be of significant help to all students undertaking Hoops Mania, as each year up to 100 students represent the College in Basketball at various levels, which all have a significant financial commitment. In 2018 our top basketballers in the Senior Learning Community (Years 7-12) are aiming to represent Hillcrest at both the Queensland and Australian Championships. These two events alone will cost, in total, around $1400 per student. Hillcrest has committed to sending their students to these events each year and therefore, younger students are encouraged to begin saving for these trips – even if they are in the Junior Learning Community (Prep-Year 6). As a donor, you can either commit to a lump-sum payment for the entire event or a ‘per-shot’ payment. Please note that in 2016 most students were successful in shooting between 500-750 baskets. The child seeking your donation should have an authenticated ‘Hoops Mania Sponsorship Booklet’. Unfortunately, donated funds are not tax deductable. Thank you for supporting our students in their quest to reaching their basketball ambitions. If you have any questions about this event, please feel free to contact me at basketball@hillcrest.qld.edu.au.
Kind Regards, Andrew Taylor STUDENT ATHLETE ACADEMIC ADVISOR & BASKETBALL COORDINATOR
