Welcome FROM THE EXECUTIVE HEAD OF COLLEGE

Hillcrest Christian College has embarked on an exciting journey of growth, innovation, and change in recent years. We are a college that is embracing and redefining 21st Century education, while standing firm on the core values envisioned by our founders over 35 years ago. In 2016, we unveiled our five-year Strategic Plan, a plan to cement and connect our history and College ethos, with a bold and exciting future. A plan that would see Hillcrest provide a learning environment of world-standing, where every student would be equipped to succeed spiritually, educationally, and in their extracurricular pursuits.

Our classrooms are filled with incredible young men and women imbued with character, confidence and a genuine desire to impact the community. Our campus is filled with students who are enjoying some of the most amazing educational and extracurricular facilities imaginable. We have been blessed beyond measure, and give glory to God for all that He began here 35 years ago, and all that He continues to do at Hillcrest Christian College. Mr Jeff Davis Executive Head of College

Three years into this Strategic Plan, and I can honestly say that Hillcrest is flourishing. Our reputation in the community is stronger than ever before, and our enrolments have increased significantly over the past three years.

“For no one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. Corinthians 3:11

OUR STORY Hillcrest Christian College was founded in 1982 as Southern Gold Coast Christian Community School, with the aim of providing a holistic Christian education to Gold Coast students. We began teaching from a small site at Palm Beach Baptist Church with only 35 students and five staff members, and quickly became renowned for providing a quality, Christ-centred education, and strong sense of community. Hillcrest is now a thriving College, with over 1,450 students from Pre-Kindy — Year 12, set on a picturesque 10-hectare property, in central Gold Coast. Hillcrest is reimagining the landscape of conventional education, as we continue to develop an innovative and responsible digital-learning environment. Significant construction and renovations have occurred across the College over the past two years, to maximise learning opportunities, inspire creativity, foster peer engagement, and optimise digital technology, as part of every student’s daily learning.

OUR LEARNING

COMMUNITIES Hillcrest Christian College is differentiated by four smaller communities to ensure that each student’s learning journey is shaped by the curriculum and environment that best suits their specific age group, and relevant learning needs. Hillcrest is comprised of three unique learning communities across Pre-Kindy Year 12, and also offers an International Learning Community with programs for international students from Prep – Year 12.

EARLY LEARNING COMMUNITY (ELC)

PRE-KINDY - KINDY Our Early Learning Community at Hillcrest is the first stepping stone in your child’s formative educational journey, and we consider it the greatest privilege to be able to nurture and equip young learners in our Pre-Kindy and Kindy programs. Our experienced team of educators see their role as an extension of your family, and enjoy working in partnership with families to ensure every child’s early learning milestones are achieved. Our Kindy program implements the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guidelines (QKLG) and is developed through the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). At the heart of this Framework is the view that early childhood is a time when exploring the notions of being, belonging and becoming, are essential to the development of identity, reasoning and wellbeing. We recognise that our young students learn best through play, and our inspirational learning environment at Hillcrest has been designed to encourage hands-on play and peer interaction, giving each child the thrill of personal discovery.

An Early Years education can greatly benefit a child’s development, and better prepare them for starting school. Children ‘graduate’ from our Early Learning Community feeling confident and ready for their transition to Prep, equipped with many new skills and friendships, to ensure they can thrive in our Junior Learning Community.

PREP - YEAR 6 Our Junior Learning Community strengthens your child’s educational foundation, by providing a caring environment where they will embark on a journey of social, spiritual, emotional, physical and academic development. Every child has been uniquely and wonderfully made, filled with the potential to succeed in their personal pursuits, and to make a significant difference in our world. We believe children have a far greater capacity to learn and succeed if their strengths and needs are identified, and so our teachers are committed to knowing each child’s individual character, and providing a learning environment that is best suited to their needs and interests. The Junior Learning Community provides a rich curricular and cocurricular program. Along with our core learning areas, all students from Prep - Year 6 have specialised Music, French, Design and Technology, and Physical Education lessons. They can also engage in additional programs such as Chess, Speech and Drama, and other interest areas.

SENIOR LEARNING COMMUNITY (SLC)

YEARS 7 - 12 The Senior Learning Community is the final stage of education within Hillcrest Christian College, and involves a journey of significant emotional and physical growth in a student’s life. These years can have a profound impact on students, as their identity becomes more defined, and they approach maturity and adulthood. Our focus throughout Years 7 - 12 is on instilling the values of integrity, cooperation, respect, confidence and a deeper personal relationship with Jesus. Our aspiration is for graduates to leave our school as confident, caring and wellbalanced young adults who are equipped to thrive and make a meaningful contribution to society. Hillcrest offers many opportunities for students to explore and develop their personal talents and interests, while preparing them for the rigours of tertiary education and life beyond Hillcrest. Students are led through the art of goal setting, and reaching the higher expectations of independence, personal responsibility and self-motivation. We offer an extensive range of subjects and guarantee to offer every subject in the timetable, irrespective of the number of students who choose it. This helps students plan their senior years with confidence, and means that whether they intend to pursue further study through an ATAR, Rank Pathway, Vocational Education or employment, every student can succeed.

COLLEGE CURRICULUM Hillcrest Christian College follows the State and National guidelines for the development of curriculum. As a Christian College, we also embed biblical values and beliefs into all of our subjects. All students complete our Christian Living core subject, which teaches about Jesus, biblical principles, and living a God-honouring life. We believe that each child is a unique creation of God, and we strive to foster each child’s spiritual, physical, emotional, social and cognitive development, to build a strong foundation for successful learning. Many of our subjects incorporate DesignCentred Learning (DCL), which is a model of learning where students engage in tasks that have a real-world audience. Our older students also take part in a skills-based program which focusses on interpersonal, social and communication skills that equip them to be successful both at Hillcrest, and in their future workplace.

CURRICULUM

ENRICHMENT CAMPS

EXCURSIONS

MISSION TRIPS

Our year-level and House camps are the highlight of the College calendar for many students, and provide a wonderful way for students to connect with their peers, as they learn things about themselves that they may not have discovered in the classroom. Students often grow in self-confidence during our exciting camps, as they push their personal boundaries, overcome fears, create lasting memories and develop friendships that carry them through their College years.

All of our classes at Hillcrest embark on a range of excursions throughout the year, designed to bring our curriculum to life outside of the classroom, and ultimately deepen our students’ understanding of a current topic. Excursion costs are generally included in College fees, and often include visits to theme parks, museums, galleries, technology centres, wildlife parks and much more.

At Hillcrest, we believe it is important to connect students with communities at a local, national and international level, and to show them the value of service to others. The perspective and experience they gain from these trips is invaluable, and helps our students appreciate cultural diversity, and the needs of those in our world who are less fortunate. Senior students have opportunities to participate in a range of mission outreach programs, including the North Queensland and Thailand Mission trips and individual community outreach activities.

Camps are a compulsory part of our curriculum and begin from Year 4 with an overnight camp, and gradually increase in duration as students mature. The cost of our camps are included in College fees.

SPECIAL EVENTS Every year we host hundreds of family members and friends at Hillcrest for a variety of exciting events, designed to promote learning across generations, engage students in various topics, and encourage an active love of learning. Some of these events include Grandparents Day, Mothers and Fathers Day morning teas, our biennial College Fete, Sports Carnivals, The Choral and Art Extravaganza, the Anzac Day service, Graduations, Celebration Evenings and College Musicals. We also create excitement every term for our younger students with various dress-up days designed to foster fun and imagination, including our Easter Hat Parade, Pyjama Day, Book Week Parade, Crazy Hair Day, Story Book Day and much more.

LEARNING

SUPPORT The College operates a successful Learning Support program for Prep - Year 12, staffed by qualified teachers and aides. At Hillcrest, we believe that each child is an individual, uniquely made in the image of God, and it is our aim to nurture, guide and support children and their parents through the learning journey.

Our successful support programs are intended to help every Hillcrest student reach their potential for success in learning and life.

16 | HILLCREST CHRISTIAN COLLEGE PROSPECTUS

ENGLIGH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE We offer English as a Second Language (ESL) lessons to any Prep - Year 12 student whose native language is not English, and who needs additional support with learning the English language. Students do not have to be studying within our International Learning Community to be able to utilise ESL support.

STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

(PREP - YEAR 12)

The Education Adjustment Program (EAP) is used to identify and respond to the educational needs of students. Adjustments are made for students with disabilities to enable them to access the curriculum, achieve curriculum outcomes and participate in College life. This process consists of an ongoing cycle of data collection, planning, program development, intervention, documentation, profiles, evaluation and review.

JUNIOR LEARNING COMMUNITY READING INTERVENTION Children who are performing below year level in reading may need additional support to develop these important skills. Student data is carefully monitored to ensure intervention takes place in the early years of education and beyond. This support may occur in small groups or one-on-one. We have a team of speciallytrained teacher aides who administer a reading intervention program that is tailored to the needs of students in Prep - Year 6.

DIFFERENTIATED AIDE SUPPORT Differentiation occurs within the classroom context and is an important part of learning. Teacher aides support this process, assisting the teacher at various times by working with small groups, or with students on differentiated programs.

SENIOR LEARNING COMMUNITY STANDARDISED LANGUAGE & MATHS TESTS

MODIFIED LEARNING PROGRAMS

These tests are administered to help teachers identify students who may require additional assistance. In-class assistance from Learning Support staff is timetabled in mainstream classes, and arranged on an individual basis.

These programs are offered to students who require minor adaptations in order to participate meaningfully in mainstream classes (both compulsory and elective), and are implemented within the mainstream program.

Every person is a gift from God, and every student at Hillcrest is a treasured member of our College community.

COCURRICULAR

PERFORMING ARTS Hillcrest’s Performing Arts program is a dynamic and diverse department of staff and students, who are passionate about what they do. Hillcrest students have the opportunity to participate in an exciting variety of Performing Arts curricular and cocurricular programs, across the scope of Music, Drama and Dance. Our Performing Arts facilities consist of a 260-seat performance theatre with professional sound and lighting, two dance studios equipped with barres and sprung floors, music classrooms with the latest in teaching technology, a black-box acting theatre, a film and television studio with editing suite, and multiple practice studios.

PROGRAMS Our renowned Performing Arts program features 14 choirs, with specialist vocal and choral staff. Within our Choral program are three Excellence Choirs who have represented the College locally, nationally and internationally with recent tours including Hobart, South Korea and the United States. Our Instrumental Program has over 320 musicians from Years 4 - 12, including numerous band ensembles and orchestras. The Years 4 - 6 band and strings programs run as part of our general curriculum, to give every student a foundational understanding of music. Students can also access private tuition from our team of highly accomplished instrumental tutors. In addition to our Hillcrest SLC Dance program, we also have over 250 students enrolled in our Hillcrest Dance Academy, run in partnership with the Currumbin Academy of Performing Arts (CAPA) and offering classes in all forms of dance, from Kindy - Year 12.

We host a number of community events, including our annual Choral and Art Extravaganza, which gives students the chance to showcase their talents in front of an audience. Our annual College musicals are a highlight of our College calendar with previous productions including Thoroughly Modern Millie (2017), Seussical (2016), Jesus Christ Superstar (2015) and Wonderland (2014). Participation in Performing Arts provides a number of benefits for students, and recent studies have shown that involvement in Performing Arts can actually help facilitate proficiency in mathematics, reading, cognitive development, verbal scores, and skills for second-language development. We encourage every Hillcrest student to become involved in an area of Performing Arts, to reap the many benefits of this supportive program, and express their artistic gifts as an act of worship to God.

Performing Arts is an enriching experience for all participants, and improves a student’s confidence and ability to collaborate, communicate and express themselves.

SPORTS & COCURRICULAR Our Sport and Cocurricular program at Hillcrest is important to the holistic education of students, and is integrated throughout our Prep – Year 12 timetable. This program is consistent with the educational aims of the College and provides experiences at all levels and abilities, in a supportive and Christcentred environment. In our Junior Learning Community, we foster passion for physical activity with an engaging ‘house-based’ culture, and broad exposure to various sports. These include netball, basketball, tennis, soccer and athletics, and are led by experienced coaches during and after school. As students progress through the Junior Learning Community, they can join the competitive interschool sport program and participate in basketball, netball, soccer, rugby league, hockey, Oztag, touch football or AFL. We also encourage participation in our extracurricular Sparks, Flames and Explosions programs. These give our JLC students a breadth of options and are offered before and after school to provide a cost-effective way for children to develop extracurricular and sporting skills in a fun, safe and supportive environment.

Our curriculum sports programs include Sports Development for Years 3 - 4, interschool sport for Years 5 – 6, participation in multiple gala days across our target sports including basketball, netball, AFL and futsal, and team membership with our Hillcrest basketball and netball clubs. The Junior Learning Community boasts a plethora of options and amazing coaches including: • Matthew Lappin – former AFL star • Pero Cameron – FIBA Hall of fame member • Amanda Scott – Athletics Coach As our students move into the Senior Learning Community, we continue to promote a culture of team participation, and futsal is introduced as an interschool activity. Hillcrest also provides opportunities for excellence in a variety of sporting contexts and students displaying individual excellence for a team sport can trial to represent the College at both State and National levels. Student displaying excellence in pursuits such as swimming, cross country and athletics, may join our specialised training programs. Qualifying students can also participate in our Basketball Excellence Program, where Hillcrest teams are ranked among the best in Queensland and Australia. Other opportunities for team-based excellence exist within our futsal, netball and volleyball programs. Achieving excellence in Sport and Cocurricular pursuits may signal success in their own context, but we believe students need a balance across all areas of education. This philosophy means our students can enjoy success in their natural talent and primary interest, while also receiving a solid educational platform to succeed in all other areas of their life.

LEADERSHIP

DEVELOPMENT Our role as a College is to educate the next generation of global citizens who will be responsible for leading and shaping the world we live in. We promote the development of leadership skills from a young age in the Junior Learning Community. Our activities often involve older students buddying younger students, and teaching or leading them in various events and activities.

Our Chess, Debating, Public Speaking, Mooting and Art Club programs complement the academic progress of students, while engaging with the broader community through formal competitions. The Duke of Edinburgh award program provides an opportunity for eligible Senior Learning Community students to engage in Bridge, Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards, which expose students to adventurous journeys that challenge them personally, physically and socially. Our engaging and inclusive Sport and Cocurricular program provides students with a variety of skills and experiences that may not be gleaned from inside the classroom, and promotes a healthy lifestyle and a well-rounded approach to education.

COCURRICULAR

PROGRAMS

We identify some of our strongest Year 5 leaders at the end of each year and offer them a leadership role in Year 6, which include our Junior Captain, Vice-Captain and Prefect positions. These roles include public speaking opportunities, and provide a valuable experience for these Year 6 students to put their leadership skills into practice, preparing them for more advanced leadership opportunities in our Senior Learning Community. Our senior leadership program starts in Year 7 and continues throughout Year 12, providing students many opportunities to develop their skills through leadership roles, practical workshops, assistance at College events, and service to others. This program prepares students for undertaking leadership responsibilities at our College, in the community and in life beyond Hillcrest.

Our role as a College is to educate the next generation of global citizens who will be responsible for leading and shaping the world we live in.

RESOURCE CENTRE Hillcrest Christian College considers our Resource Centre as more than just a facility, but as an important service to our students. The Resource Centre is staffed by friendly and supportive librarians, who offer a comprehensive array of library services in modern, creative and well-equipped facilities, with an abundance of literature, digital resources and interactive learning tools. Our Resource Centre supports students to develop a love for reading and strong digital information literacy skills. Whether students are collaborating with their peers in one of our glass learning pods; igniting their imagination in our library maker space; or focusing on quiet revision on our Years 10 -12 mezzanine study space, our Resource Centre provides ample opportunity for learning.

CAR PARKING Pre-Kindy – Year 1 parents are provided with a fob to swipe at the boom gate, giving them access to Chocolate Drive for onsite car parking and the Prep - Year 1 drop off zone, which is staffed daily from 7.30am - 8.20am. Prep - Year 1 students who use this drop off zone will be escorted to the Castle undercover play area. To ensure the safety of our student pedestrians, Castle Drive is not accessible to vehicles after 7.45am, and Chocolate Drive is not accessible between 9.00am and 2.30pm, except for emergencies. Hillcrest offers street parking on Bridgman Drive for parents and licensed student drivers. Most parents utilise our Drop and Go drop off and pick up zone, for ease of getting students to and from our College.

To ensure the safety of our students walking around campus, driving onsite is restricted during certain hours of the day.

BUSES Hillcrest owns a fleet of seven modern buses, providing a bus service to and from school each day and spanning from Northern NSW to Southport, and the Hinterland. Passes can be purchased for one student, or a family. To take advantage of our discounted Term Bus Passes, payment must be received by the second Friday of each Term. Trips to and from the Varsity Lakes Train Station are available at the cost of $1.00 each way.

We do not include Bus Fees on College Fee Statements as they are paid separately to the College fees. If you do not require a full Term Pass then you can purchase Flexi Passes online. The Flexi Pass must be punched by the driver on each journey. Bus routes are listed on our website and applications are available from the Community Zone under Bus Information.
