DIRECTOR’S NOTE
The disruptions to the world in 2020 have formed a new way that we will think about living on our planet forever. The daily assumptions that we have previously made can no longer be taken for granted as life has changed. While Australian schools have been largely unaffected due to coronavirus restrictions, there have still been impacts felt which can affect even the smallest decisions that we make.
Joseph is a story about love, redemption and forgiveness.
It is with this background that we have made a deliberate decision to hold the 2021 College Musical at the start of this year to enable our students to experience the incredible joy of being part of an amazing joint experience as a cast or crew member of the production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”. Students have been rehearsing for this production since early last year and although it has been delayed in being performed, their dedication to performing this production has ensured the audience will witness something truly exceptional. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the Hillcrest Performing Arts team who have walked our students through to this point. It would have been easy to say that due to COVID a production was too hard, or perhaps too risky, but instead they have embraced each challenge with an innovative spirit of overcoming each obstacle. I offer my sincere appreciation on behalf of the entire College community. Please sit back and enjoy this production. Remember that this is unique and special. I am absolutely sure you will be experiencing a truly remarkable performance from a group of young men and women who have worked tirelessly to create this outstanding production.
Congratulations and thank you to the Cast, Parents, College Executive and our Creative Team of staff for your commitment to the 2020/2021 College musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. We made it! Musicals have a momentum that build towards an opening night. This incredible cast of students, now in Years 8, 9 and 10, plus a ring-in and the Creative Team, have demonstrated courage and diligence when rehearsals were interrupted twice, but together they have managed to produce an outstanding production. Joseph, a musical comedy with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber was first presented as a 15-minute “pop cantata” at Colet Court School in London in 1968 and was their first musical to be performed publicly. This story about love, redemption and forgiveness is based on the “coat of many colours” story of Joseph from the book of Genesis in the Bible. This family-friendly musical, with catchy music, has only a few lines of spoken dialogue; is almost entirely sung-through. By the way you won’t see any tea towel headdresses tonight! This contemporary production of Joseph, has a local flair, set in the Outback (Canaan) and Surfers Paradise (Egypt). Thank you for your support of this production. Enjoy the performance!
SYNOPSIS Joseph, his father’s favourite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar’s wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph’s gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves grovelling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock ‘n’ roll, this Old Testament story emerges both timely and timeless.
