ISSUE 8, MONDAY, 14 SEPTEMBER 2015 have the opportunity, in many cases, to experience the joys of just being in nature. Our protectionist view of the world can create a limited perspective of what the real world can offer young children in their learning adventure.

PRINCIPAL, JEFF DAVIS As I reflect back on life growing up in a small country town, I reminisce about how my parents would allow my brother and I to roam the neighbourhood with friends finding exciting activities by the lake or in the council gardens and fill our time with a wealth of experiences. In each of us, this instilled a sense of adventure and opportunity and made us more determined to find out more of the world in which we live. As I fast track to the communities in which we are involved today, it is quite apparent that the majority of children no longer play on the streets or roam the neighbourhood looking for fun or even

A N E V E N IN G W

Instead, we tend to allow our children more time to sit inside, watch endless videos or play computer games when they are not searching the internet, as we endeavour to keep them safe from the potential dangers of the outside world. More and more research is being gathered to show that this approach is a fallacy. In fact, we seem to be fostering a generation of young people, who are more addicted to digital technology than anything else in life. We are seeing digital detox centres being established worldwide as parents seek to restore their children back to normal behaviours. Parents are becoming more aware of the long term dangers that digital technology can negatively impact upon our children. At Hillcrest, we are determined to develop a learning platform that includes digital technology as a tool for enhanced learning. While we are expecting our students to use computers more frequently in their studies, we would also expect that students would

only be using computers to create and research rather than just to consume information. This is an important definition when we are considering why we are using computers for our learning. Throughout the next period of time, there will be many opportunities for parents to better understand this approach and to see why it is essential in developing a learning environment where the rate of learning is maximised. As an educator, I am fully aware of the benefits that digital technology can bring to learning, but I am also acutely aware of the dangers that digital saturation can cause to individuals in the way that they think, and more importantly in the way that they act. Schools, throughout the world, are readjusting to the epidemic of social media and the way in which this significantly impacts negatively on the school community. While we may lord the excitement of having Facebook pages to keep up with our friends and relatives, the reality is that in many cases, these are the ideal bullying pages that many students use in an attempt to gain notoriety and superiority. I would ask all parents to support us in our intention to break the digital cycle and become part of a community

committed to ensuring our students are digitally safe from the addiction and abuse of social media. NEXT WEEK, WE HAVE INVITED INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED SPEAKER, BRAD HUDDLESTON, TO ADDRESS OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY ABOUT THE DANGERS OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY. Brad is a qualified a computer scientist who has become aware of the dangers that technology can bring. For the last decade, Brad has researched the impact that excessive use of technology can have on adolescents and how parents, in particular, are totally unaware of the dangers that this presents to their children. His presentation will look at both the physical and emotional impact that excessive technology can have on the operation of the brain, which will help many parents explain the behaviours they are seeing in their children. Brad's latest book, Digital Cocaine, looks at the impact that screen time has on the brain and the way in which it has an identical effect to using illicit drugs. This is a meeting that all parents should attend, as we seek to provide a safe and secure community in which our children are to grow up.

H-I-L-L-S-P-E-L-L ... that is... correct  PHOTOS AVAILABLE ON PORTAL August 2015 marked our 5th annual HILLSPELL competition for Years 1 through to 7. Many students put their hand up to be involved, as aspiring young spellers. Perhaps the recent media exposure for the program Spelling Bee caused spelling to be the flavour of the month, but there were many spelling enthusiasts who put their hand up to spell tricky words. Brilliant! All the students sat a written component, with some words seen and some unseen. From there, five finalists were chosen to move into the second stage of the competition; the oral component. Complete with lifelines, bee antennae and a Chuppa Chup waiting to be devoured, each student carefully spelled the words that were drawn, at random. It was F-U-N but also C-H-A-L-L-E-N-G-IN-G. All the students did a superb job; as did the various teachers who hosted their year level and our wonderful volunteer judges. Our champions for 2015 were as follows: YEAR 1 – MATTHEW SABOT YEAR 2 – SIGRID NIX YEAR 3 – KOOPER RANSOME YEAR 4 – LACHLAN CAREY YEAR 5 – ALEXIS CHAU YEAR 6 – ELIJAH BURTON YEAR 7 – JESSICA COLEMAN Congratulations to all the HILLSPELL participants. YEAR 4 CAMP

YEAR 5 afl

4P’s excursion to Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre at the beginning of term two was followed up by a visit from one of the educators. Melissa Traill came to the classroom to present two wild ginger plants for The Secret Garden project. She then explained how the reduction in numbers of the native Richmond Birdwing Butterfly in the Burleigh region was due to the Dutchman’s Pipe vine, an introduced species. The butterfly usually lays its eggs on the native Birdwing Butterfly vine. When the caterpillars hatch out and eat the leaves of the introduced plant, it dies due to the toxins therein. The vines are very similar but the native vines are being overtaken by the introduced species. She presented the class with a rare native Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vine to plant in the garden for the survival of the species. The students will record any caterpillars or butterflies found for future sustainability of the butterfly.

On the 3rd and 4th of September 2015, Year 4s from Hillcrest went to Camp Goodenough for their first camp. In every activity we did, we had to trust our teammates. We worked as a team in team pursuits, we conquered our fears on the giant swing, we got to use nails and bolts to create a billycart and crate stacking was a blast! With every meal we learnt some new table manners and we had to describe with some adjectives the meals we were serving up. The food was delicious and the dessert was even better! We slept in cabins and some of us even snored! Lights out was 9pm and we had no talking – but some us chatted anyway. Overall camp was amazing and we were all very tired at the end. We can’t wait for next year’s camp!

Year 5 have been learning leadership skills through playing the wonderfully awesome game of AFL. They have been placed in 3 teams within each class where they ran a game as officials and played a game as players. They had to learn skills essential to leadership such as negotiation, humility, patience, acceptance, selflessness etc. They will be undertaking the selection process next term for Year 6 2016 student leadership. This is an exciting process for them. We have seen some great action in the games and in the grand final this week, 5P won over 5J 47 to 34. It was an action packed and well fought game. Well done Year 5 we have seen you grow in your skills.

YEAR 12 COMBINED SCHOOLS CHAPEL AGAPE: FEEDING THE HOMELESS

YEAR 11 PHYSICS

QCS TESTING

Earlier this Term, Year 12 students attended a combined chapel service with Year 12 students from Emmanuel College and King’s Christian College, to worship together and encourage each other. After a worship time, led by the students, and a short message by the Emmanuel Principal on carrying joy, students formed teams to be a part of “The Amazing Race: Emmanuel”, where they had to post Instagram photos of different locations and in different poses around the College. There was a BBQ after, with all of the students wanting to stay around long after to be together. This was a great time to be with other likeminded Year 12 students from other schools, and was a strong sign of unity amongst the Christian schools.

As an introduction to the study of Waves; the year 11 Physics students build their own wave machine. This was used to investigate certain properties of waves eg amplitude, speed, frequency and wavelength and how these variables relate to one another. The wave machine, unfortunately had a very limited life as the ‘mass’ of the system aka jelly babies did not last very long!

On Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 September, fifty-four of our Year 12 students sat the Queensland Core Skills Test (QCS). Sat by most Year 12 students across the state, the QCS involves four papers; a writing task, a short response task and two multiple-choice papers. As a school, it is very important that students achieve well in these tests. Our students have been preparing for the QCS for the past 12 months. Allocated time each week has been given to specialised tuition to develop and fine tune skills in the areas assessed. As a College, we are proud of our Year 12 students and their efforts. They have worked hard in their preparation, and were very focussed in their intent on the days. We look forward to receiving their results in November. I would like to acknowledge the hard work of Mr Norman Power, Mrs Leah May, Mr Paul Wotton, Mr Peter Fernance and Mr Michael Burgess in preparing and equipping our students for these tests.

YEAR 9 visit by hon. karen andrews mp Our Local Member , Karen Andrews visited the Year 7 to 9's on Thursday 3 September in Assembly. This was to present all the year 9's who went on the Sydney Canberra trip with a certificate of participation. After the certificates were presented Ms Andrews also presented to two of our Year 9 leaders an Australian Flag that hung in the House of Representatives for the school to display. Ms Andrews spent some time talking to the students about what life is like as a politician and how she spends 6 months of the year working in Canberra and the remainder of the time in her electorate. We thank Ms Andrews for making the time to visit and present our Year 9 students with their certificates.

On Tuesday 28 August we had 45 Hillcrest students attend the event, from year 7-12, which was held on the beachfront in Coolangatta. We served the local homeless and needy, alongside the existing AGAPE ministry by serving them hot food, drinks and offering donated blankets and clothing. Our students embraced the opportunity and thrived. It was interesting to notice the challenges a few students had in accepting they were the ones (as a teenager) who were in a position to help these adults. A very humbling act of service. In the future we would like to break this larger group up into two separate groups, heading down on either Tuesday or Wednesday evening. If any of parents would like to join a group as a leader, please let me know! MR BEN THOMPSON, CHAPLAIN

The Year 11 Physics students also visited Dreamworld to investigate the ‘mechanics’ behind all the thrilling rides and how Physics laws affect amusement park ride design. They discovered that the designers of the roller coaster rides carefully crafted these rides to be exciting and scary, but you're actually in less danger than you think. You face a greater threat of injury playing sports or riding a bike than you do on a park ride. Amusement park rides use physics laws to simulate danger, while the rides themselves are typically very safe.

On Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th the Hillcrest Athletics Team competed at Griffith University for the Annual Regional Athletics Carnival. Students performed exceptionally, with nearly every athlete surpassing their personal bests in their chosen events. Special mention extends to Simi Thomsen Ajayi, Dylan Carpenter, Jacob Radloff, Saxon Bruce, and Flyn Schieb for qualifying for the Queensland Championships in Term 4. These students will continue their preparation for these Championships with specialised coaching.

On Friday 4th September our tiniest of students participated in the Prep to Year 3 Sports Day. The occasion was filled with excitement, enthusiasm and support for one another. With the purpose of the day being a focus on enjoyment and participation, all students had an opportunity to engage in a variety of activities in a community based atmosphere. For the first half of the day, students participated in a 70m dash in front of their peers. The parent and teacher races were also a source of amusement for all and the visit by Hillcrest's mascot 'Hilly the Hound' took the atmosphere to a new level. This was followed by a rotation-style series of activities that were set for each year level. These activities pushed all students in a variety of challenges but at the end of the day, all students had a lot of fun with their peers, teachers and parents. A big thank you goes out to all the teachers who ran the day and to the parents who assisted in the running of the carnival and the support of your children. We look forward to the event in years to come.

PERFORMING ARTS YEAR 5 CONCERT BAND WINS! One of the major strategic plans for the Performing Arts Department, and the whole College, is the new all-inclusive Year Five music program we commenced this year. In particular the Concert Band is designed to put every child who doesn’t currently play an instrument onto one. This program gives many students the opportunity to try something for the first time in their lives and which may stick with them for the rest of it. Many, many young students have found a special gifting on a musical instrument this year which they may never have found without this program and we thank God regularly for giving us the gift of music. The Concert Band has 55 members and have practiced and rehearsed diligently with their hard-working teachers all year. There were 40 Gold Coast Beginner Bands entered into the Gold Coast Eisteddfod in four sections. In our group of 10 the competition was very strong from some very large and established programs. In front of an audience of over 1000, Hillcrest's Year Five Concert Band was awarded 1st Place! The strategic plan with this group and program is to put 50-70 musicians through the Concert Band and into Year Six band and so on progressing upwards for a number of years until Hillcrest can proudly stand amongst the top Queensland music schools with our Instrumental ensembles. With this talented group of Year Fives the future is certainly looking bright. Add to this that in our current QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education) system, students who complete at Grade 8 AMEB level on their instrument can automatically be awarded an OP 9; then this program is certainly one to strongly consider. Many of our current Year Fives with dedication could achieve that Grade 8 level and even more! .
