ISSUE 2, WEDNESDAY, 23 MARCH 2016 FROM THE PRINCIPAL The more I meet with families, the more times I hear parents in particular mention that they do not have enough time in their lives. As you might imagine, I have the privilege of speaking into the lives of families based on my research and experience. Family time is precious. Too many times we all take it for granted and assume that it will be there forever. Please do not think that I am anything but a realist, I know the hard yards that parents go through when they have young children and the difficulty we all have in life in balancing careers, family time, self-time and then having the energy left to just complete life. In reading an article recently I was captured by the message that, “we all want more.” I did some further research on this and discovered that we have a symptomatic problem that our society is creating, where we want more luxuries in order to feel relaxed, yet we are having to work much harder to afford the luxuries. To me this is somewhat counterproductive. We work harder, which gives us less time, in order to purchase items that make us happy, which we don’t have the time to use. Somewhere along the way we have all made the mistake of thinking that real joy comes from anything other than investing in the lives of those who we value the most. In reading scripture, I often learn many truths that help better understand what is truly important in life. I was recently reading the story of the Ten Commandments, which we all know well, however in Deuteronomy 5:9-10 it talks about how God views our behaviours and particularly our worship of other things, such as money, instead of focussing on what is truly important.
You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. DEUTERONOMY 5:9-10
What I learn here is that my behaviours as a parent will affect the generations of my family that follow. There is never a clearer reason for me to ensure that my priorities reflect what is truly important to me so that my children learn from my actions, not my words. Research shows that children copy their parents. I would encourage all Hillcrest parents to keep this in mind as we approach the Easter season where we celebrate the death of Jesus Christ who died on a cross for the atonement of our sins. Especially at this time in the year, our children will see what is truly important to parents by their actions. There are amazing church services all around the coast this weekend. If establishing the right family legacy is a high priority for you, take the time to go to one of these services and start showing your children what is important in life. Please don’t make the excuse that you are too busy, because we are ignoring the promise made in verse 10 where God say he will show “love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commands”. On behalf of the entire Hillcrest community, I wish you every blessing possible over the Easter period and holiday break. Thank you for your continued support and encouragement. Jeff Davis, PRINCIPAL
at Theme Parks for the remainder of this year. Staff will be required to map learning intentions against the Australian Curriculum elements and also ensure that their assignments are consistent with a 21st Century Learning Design in order that we can assure the quality and effectiveness of these learning activities matches the intention of our overall curriculum program. Students will be given opportunities to learn new skills and abilities at school prior to exploring and testing assumptions and hypothesis at Theme Parks directly related to the area of study.
All students in Years 3 to 12 will be given Theme Park passes until 31 December 2016 which they may use privately as well as educationally.
Cambridge University has been a leader in the development of educational philosophies that show that scenarios that can be solved in the real world lead to far richer and deeper student experiences. In conjunction with Village Roadshow, we will be piloting a project where students will be able to complete parts of their learning in a problem based learning activities
We are very excited where this partnership may lead and from the student feedback, they are equally as excited to not only receive the passes, but to have the opportunity
In developing a 21st Century curriculum we have learnt that real life application of learning is critical for the full development of skills and abilities that students will require in the employment world once they graduate from Hillcrest.
I will keep you fully informed of the developments of this program throughout the year and will also provide details of where our curriculum program can be accessed for your consideration.
ACCESSING YOUR MYFUN TICKETS Paper tickets will be allocated and sent home with all students in Years 3-12 this week. To activate membership and receive your MyFun Pass, students will be required to attend one of the Village Roadshow theme parks and process upon your first admission at an operating ticket booth so that you can be issued with your pass.
This is not an attempt to create an environment where students are leaving the school community to have ‘fun’ days, but rather the students will enter an enclosed environment where they will be able to explore curriculum elements in the real world, completely related to their school based learning program. All assessment pieces will be provided to Village Roadshow Executives and parents with the intention that students all around Australia will begin to use our programs as part of their excursions to each of the Theme Parks. Hillcrest staff will be developing these assessment pieces to ensure that the critical elements of learning are maintained. Students will get the benefit of experiencing a completely different learning environment, rather than the four walls of the classroom.
MYFUN PASSES YEARS 3-12

So hard to believe that we are at the end of Term One already. Thank you to all the parents who have registered with Flexischools as this is now the only method accepted for ordering for JLC students. SLC students are able to order through Flexischools but if their student ID number is linked with the Flexischools account they can simply buy and scan their cards which is a lot faster than paying cash or using eftpos. We no longer accept money sent in bags as this is excessively time consuming and is double handling. We are constantly trying to streamline procedures to run more effectively which is why we have opted for Flexischools only.

JUNIOR LEARNING COMMUNITY YEAR 1 What a fantastic time we have had in Year 1! In Week 8, all of the students excitedly boarded our Hillcrest buses for Somerset Pool. The students loved participating in swimming lessons and had so much fun engaging with their instructors and increasing their ability in this vital skill.
YEAR 2 Friday, 18 March saw the Year 2 explorers heading out to visit a variety of sculptures and memorials from one end of the Coast to the other. As part of our History unit this term we have been studying many sculptures on the Coast, together with their significance, what they are made of, and the part they play in reminding us of the past. There were some surprises awaiting us, especially at The Man on the Bike at Tallebudgera where we saw a couple of additional statues which looked remarkably like Mrs Geyer and… Mrs Balym!
YEAR 3 3G, 3C and 3T stepped back in time on their excursion to Beenleigh Historical Village. During this experience they discovered examples of change and continuity in daily life over the past 150 years. The students experienced “wash day” including participating in washing clothes by hand and helping to put the wet cloths through the Mangle. They visited the “logging camp” where they learnt about the life of local timber loggers, found out about their wages and discovered how tiring it was to use a two man cross saw to cut up timber. The final tour before heading back to school was to attend a school that was about 100 years old. The students discovered a range of changes between schooling of the past and our school life today including writing on slates and learning by rote!
YEAR 4 On Monday 22 February 4A, 4Y and 4SL visited the Gold Coast Botanic Gardens in Benowa. As the students were learning about life cycles of plants and animals in science, this excursion was a fantastic opportunity to see
these life cycles in action! The students learnt all about different environments of plants and animals. They even saw some baby ducklings, black swans and dragonflies in their natural habitat. Overall it was a fun, but exhausting day of learning for everyone.
YEAR 4P (ECHO) Term One started off with a bang … lots of banging of nails, sanding wood, gluing, painting, sewing and using equipment to make toys of yesteryear. We are exploring what entertainment was like for children of the 1850s in early Australian life. What forces are at work in moving toys form the basis for Science investigations. During week one and two the children were given a group Marshmallow challenge. How do we design and make a free standing tower as tall as possible using 20 pieces of spaghetti, tape, string and with one marshmallow on top?
YEAR 5 Students in Year 5P, 5M and 5S were given a Maths investigation task last week. Their challenge was to take a side and prove or disprove the claim that boys are taller than girls using mathematical reasoning. This has required them to measure accurately and convert units of measurement. In order to prove their case, we have looked at different data displays and which one would best represent the type of data we have. We look forward to seeing whether the claim is proved correct.
YEAR 6 Simulating the movement of the tectonic plates of planet Earth! This activity was to show students the layers of the Earth’s core and to demonstrate the movement of the Tectonic plates. What was needed? A very big tray of red jelly and pieces of toast (strategically placed onto the surface of the jelly. The Year 6 students carefully moved the plates (pieces of toast) side by side and watched what happened. Toby Craven and Natalie Teasdale then explained this experiment to the class. They sounded just like scientists from Geo Science Australia. The best part however, was getting to eat jelly on toast at the end of Science lesson, yum!

YEAR 5/6 ECHO COMMONWEALTH DAY CELEBRATIONS Students celebrated by wearing Commonwealth country themed tops/hats and accessories and tasting foods from a variety of Commonwealth countries. A special thanks to Mrs. Diven for her scrumptious Commonwealth Day cake and Mrs. Penfold for helping with the serving logistics. It was a fun (and yummy) way to learn about the 53 Commonwealth Countries.
ECHO ENGLISH INCURSION Dr Cameron Stelzer, Author / Illustrator of The Stroogle and PieRat characters, visited Hillcrest's ECHO classes this term. He conducted writing and illustrating workshops throughout the day. No matter what the age or focus, he captivated the children's attention and enthusiastically inspired them to become sensational writers. The children look forward to his input each year.
TECHNOLOGY INVESTIGATIONS The children in 4P have enjoyed reading the set text, "The Borrowers" by Mary Norton and completed some technology tasks related to the theme. They each set off with borrowing bags to collect five things that little people could use in their daily life. From this they drew what the items could possibly be turned into and then they made the inventions.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS LUKE PINK Year 5 student Luke Pink is a competitor in the National Rotax Mini Max Challenge Championship of 125cc go kart racing. This is a competitive hard fought championship for aspiring motor racers. Racers like Craig Lowndes, Mark Winterbottom and Michael Schumacher have come through the ranks of go kart racing to be champions of their elite sports category. On the weekend of 2628th Feb 2016, Luke travelled to Warwick to compete in the latest round and won convincingly. Out of 5 races he won 2 heats, finished 2nd in another heat then won the pre-final and the final. Just recently
the 11th to the 13th of March Luke travelled to Port Macquarie. He qualified 3rd and won the 3 heats, crashed in the pre final and won the final. What a showing! Due to such a great showing in the first 2 rounds of the year he is currently placed 4th in the championship. We certainly wish Luke well and will be following his progress closely. LIAM RICHARDS On Saturday 19 March, Year 5 student, Liam Richards competed in a Trampolining Competition in Redcliff. He received 1st place in Trampoline 2nd place in double mini. Congratulations Liam! HUNTER PETERS On Saturday 19 March, Year 5 student, Hunter Peters, achieved his black-white belt (first level of a black belt) for Taekwondo at the Tans Academy. YEAR 10-12 COLLEGE UNIFORM GETS A NEW ADDITION TERM 2
The hat is to be worn to and from the College each day and at outdoor or off campus activities when the full College uniform is worn. Each student's locker has a shelf for their hat to be stored on as well as a hook to hang their blazer from. This is to ensure that students can safely store these parts of their uniform when they are not being worn during the day. Each student will be responsible for the upkeep of their hat and keeping it in a clean and wearable state. I strongly recommend that the hat is not put into the College back pack as crushing it will result in permanent damage to the rim.
Last year we launched the new College hat for Years 10 to 12 students. All students had a fitting for their hat. These hats have now arrived and will become a part of the uniform for Year 10 to 12 students as of Term 2. The hat is being provided to students in Years 10 to 12 as part of their transition into the final years of schooling. It replaces the previous tradition of giving each students a Senior tie as they enter Year 10. New students who join the College during the year will be fitted and provided a College Hat. The students will receive their hat on the last day of this term. As they receive their hat they will be asked to name it on the inside rim and they will also be provided with a bag to get the hat home safely.
The new hat adds to the formal College uniform and will help students in their development of pride in their uniform.
BEACH TO BEACH WALK On Saturday morning, 40+ students and staff from Years 10 to 12 participated in the Beach-toBeach Walk raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation’s ‘World’s Greatest Shave’. This is the sixth year in a row the College has done this. The group walked the 14km from Burleigh beach to Southport after which, students had their heads shaved and long hair cut short. Well done to all students on this substantial effort and for raising funds and awareness for such a worthy cause.

HILLCREST'S YEAR 10 'LEGAL EAGLETS' LEAVE THE NEST FOR THE FIRST TIME In the spirit of the well planned risk taking of intrepid Antarctic adventurer, Geoff Wilson, Hillcrest’s Year 10 Legal students paid a flying visit to Parliament House in Brisbane on Tuesday, 23 February, foregoing the relative safety of their ‘nest’ (Room 27) for the thrills and spills of a frenetic Question Time, which included a heated debate between the Queensland Premier and the Leader of the Opposition. The students then engaged in a mock parliamentary debate about a hypothetical proposed law of making school compulsory from 9am to 5pm. Risk taking in real world immersions such as this excursion, where our students learn to voice their opinions with dignity, respect and authority, is essential to the ultimate development of wisdom, empathy and action. Character is destiny!
DEBATING On Wednesday 9 March Hillcrest Christian College Debaters competed in the first round of debates for the year. The Junior B topic was: Homework is a Worthwhile Use of Time. HCC 2 debated in the affirmative but were sadly defeated by their opposition. HCC 1 debated in the Negative and victoriously won their debate. Both teams have learned new strategies and are now getting ready for the second round. The Year 10 Intermediate Debating Team faced up against Emmanuel in a debate about the value of loyalty. The teams were separated by only one point, with Hillcrest as the affirmative team not winning this time. The adjudicator was very surprised that this was their first ever debate and congratulated them on a near win against a much more experienced team. We are expecting big things from them. We have 3 senior teams this year. The next debate topic is: Employment should take precedence over the environment.

HINTERLAND DISTRICT TRIALS Hillcrest Christian College is a member of the Hinterland Green District Sport Association, which is an avenue for students possessing exceptional ability to progress to South Coast, State and National level representation. There are a wide variety of sports students can trial for and these are listed on the College's Parent Lounge. Any student wanting to trial in any of these sports must see Mr Pauly or email sports@hillcrest.qld.edu.au between 1-2 Weeks prior to the trial dates. Students then need to fill out an application form that must be signed by the school (if students don't get this signed, they will not be allowed to trial). Furthermore, is a large amount of students want to trial then Hillcrest may need to perform their own internal trial and send through their top students.

On Tuesday 8th March Hillcrest held its Years 4-12 Interhouse Cross Country Carnival. Due to the construction works at the Hillcrest site, this year saw the carnival moved to Pizzey Park where students revelled in the new surroundings. The day was a mixed bag of weather conditions, with the early part of the day looking ominous with rain. However, by the time the carnival was in full swing the weather tuned out to be fantastic, which was matched by the enthusiasm of all students, teachers and parents. Congratulations to Carmichael who took out the overall House Points for the day. Thank you to everyone who made the day a success and well done to the students below who made the District Cross Country Team - students are listed in order of position. Students being selected for Districts have been emailed with the information for the carnival.

PERFORMING ARTS CHORAL NEWS A great start to 2016 with all 13 College Choirs rehearsing and already in fine voice. We are very much looking forward to some beautiful concerts throughout the year. CHORAL CAMP 2016 On the final weekend in February, 66 choristers attended the annual Choral Excellence Camp at North Tamborine. We were very blessed to have the highly experienced and talented Ms Claire Preston as our guest conductor. Students worked through a series of small group sectionals, movement classes and choir rehearsals over the 2 and half days with the all hard work culminating in a wonderful concert performed for parents, families and friends. Night-time activities were organised superbly by the Year 12 Bel Canto girls and included fancy dress Disney Trivia and the inaugural Disney “aca riff-off”. Many thanks to the staff who attended the camp and to the students for their dedication and enthusiasm. SEEKING A SPONSOR FOR TOURING CHOIR UNIFORMS Bel Canto and MANCHOIR will be travelling to Tasmania in the June/ July holidays to perform as part of the International Choral Program at the Festival of Voices in Hobart. We are currently seeking a major sponsor to provide a performance shirt for the festival. The sponsor will have exclusive branding rights with their logo appearing on the sleeve of the performance shirt. TEACHING, LEARNING & GLOBAL EDUCATION QUALITY TEACHING & LEARNING AT HILLCREST CHRISTIAN COLLEGE Over the past 12 months we have been working to develop a clear, research-based teaching and learning framework that identify key standards for our teachers. Our Layers of Learning Framework is a set of broad guidelines relating to quality teacher practices and represents the way we teach at Hillcrest Christian College. The framework reflects our College cornerstones and our commitment to a consistent and effective teaching approach so that all students have the best opportunity to learn and reach their full potential.
ENGAGEMENT IN LEARNING Quality teaching occurs when quality learning is the goal of the teacher. It is not just about delivering content, but planning and facilitating a rigorous, engaging program that encompasses understanding, skills, thinking processes, attitudes and behaviours. Robert Marzano, a wellknown educational researcher and author of the book The Art and Science of Teaching”, states
As Hillcrest Christian College teachers we aim to: E1 ensure expected learning outcomes are made explicit to students. E2 provide engaging learning opportunities including: rigorous investigations and complex exchanges of ideas. E3 differentiate learning experiences, giving support and having high expectations for all students. E4 ensure students practise, question, imagine, critically think, reflect and create. E5 develop learning experiences that are purposeful and relevant to students’ lives in a technology rich society. The ways these practices may look in the classroom vary from year level to year level and from subject to subject. Our teachings are currently involved in twilight Professional Development Sessions as we continue to hone and improve our teaching skills.
“[Teaching is] a dynamic mixture of expertise in a vast array of instructional strategies combined with a profound understanding of the individual students in their class and their needs at particular points in time.” (Marzano, 2007)
