ISSUE 3, FRIDAY, 22 APRIL 2016 FROM THE PRINCIPAL We live in an ever changing world of dissatisfied people. Everyone dreams of a future that is better than the present and work tirelessly to find the secret to a better life. I am amazed to see how many self-help fads are advertised which promise something more and better. Over the holiday period, one of our staff and her family went to Fiji for a holiday. As you know, during the holiday period, Fiji was hit with massive storms and cyclonic conditions. This family witnessed how the Fijian community lived in the face of disaster, living in bare shacks for shelter, but so engaged with life. The lives of these children contained far less than our youth in Australia, yet they were totally engaged in life. They were engaged in the present. Finding each moment full of excitement and adventure. In contrast we find ourselves often dreaming of the future rather than the engagement of the present. We certainly have created a complex world in which we live, failing to see the beauty of each moment and enjoying the potential of each opportunity. The holy grail for Australians appears to have changed in the last 50 years. Once the aim was to work hard to pay off a mortgage and then
enjoy retirement pottering around the house with the grandchildren. Many grandparents today would fit this description and are very happy doing just this. Certainly younger generations seek much more for their future, but often at the expense of the present. The future becomes a calculated goal, rather than a journey through the beauty of life. In my opinion, we are robbing our children of some of the beauty of life. My wife and I have a favourite scripture that we quote regularly. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” In quoting this we accept the need to plan, but we also acknowledge that God has a plan for our life that surpasses all of the plans that we could dream of. Every experience builds us as individuals and a couple towards the future that God has in store for us. Through these experiences, both positive and negative we see our characters built and refined, enabling us to be ready for the next stage of our lives. Through continually seeking to build our faith and trust in God, we more and more can appreciate each moment and enjoy each experience.
I am fully aware of the need to plan and be organised, please do not think for one minute that I am suggesting the need to stop this, but what I am suggesting is that we need to start enjoying each moment more. We need to teach our children that life is a collection of experiences and we need to trust that God is building our character through these experiences in preparation for the future he has in store for us. Through faith our path become clear. When we plan less and trust more, our hearts soften and our faith grows. This is what I would love our children to understand, so that they are less enticed by the temptations of self-help programs to improve their life. If you need help in getting this balance right with your children, please contact us for some helpful ideas.

100%HOPE UGANDAN CHOIR Earlier this week we as a College were blessed and privileged to have the 100%hOPE Ugandan choir come and minister to the SLC and JLC where they sang, danced, played traditional drums and shared their testimonies. These young children are either orphans or come from extreme poverty, but have been given a future and a hope through
the not-for-profit organisation 100%hOPE. Staff and students were truly blessed and touched by their stories and the joy they brought despite their life of hardship: "You are so amazing at dancing and singing. We noticed how loving, caring you are and you never stopped smiling. You never got upset about what has happened in you past. And you were so open to us when we asked questions. thank you for being such a blessing and you opened all hearts and made us think what we can do when we are older and maybe even now.” KENDAL SAUL YR 6 ”One day I would like to visit you in Uganda. I love that you are so happy and that you had faith in God no matter what had happened in the past. I noticed that you are always smiling. You are all true blessing from God. 100%hOPE you brighten up my day.” ALYSSA HUGHES YR 6

GREETING FROM PREPLAND! Welcome back from holidays! We are sure everyone is a little taller after the holidays. Prep classes have started the term with our new literacy rotations which include phonics, sight words, reading with the CODE, reading groups and crafty fun connected to the sound of the week. It is wonderful to see how quickly all our little ones have settled into our new routines and applied themselves to their learning. Term 2 has lots of special events in Prepland. These include our Beach Day on Friday 29th April, Mothers Day Pamper afternoon Thursday 5th, our excursion to Paradise Country on Friday 17th June and Grandparent's Day on Wednesday 22nd June. Please look out for more details in your child's Red Bag and in emails. We sadly farewell our wonderful Mr Sam Downey this week. We will miss him very much and wish him well as he moves to New Zealand. We also welcome Mrs Toni Cederblad who will be teaching Prep D. Welcome to Mrs Melinda Brown who is the Prep F teacher aide for four weeks while Mrs Marnie Govorko completes her teaching practicum. And our fun tongue twister for the week is 'Thaddeus Thumb ate three plums'.
YEAR 1 What an exciting first couple of weeks we have had in Year 1! In Week 1 the students went back in time to learn about Dinosaurs. We studied their habitats, what they ate and the features of their bodies. In Week 2 we had the Teddy Bear Hospital come and visit. The medical students from Griffith University taught us about our bodies, how to care for our teeth, the importance of healthy eating and how to be safe in the sun and around medication. We had so much fun! This week in Year 1 also saw a very special event take place. Miss Soares got married! She will be returning to the College as Mrs O'Meara and we would love to congratulate both Monique and her husband Michael on their special day. A wonderful way to start Term 2!
YEAR 3 Year 3E went to Beenleigh Historical Village on Monday where students enjoyed school days from a bygone era.

DEBATING ROUND 2 On the 20th of April, Hillcrest Junior B 1 Debating Team were once again victorious in their debate. Standing as the affirmative, they debated the topic: “Australian teenagers should have smartphones”. They proved that teenagers should own smartphones to keep them connected to both local and global communities. After winning their second round of debating, they are ready for the Secret Topic in Round 3. The team members include: Molly Swanson, Jessica Coleman, Lily Wan Lum, Zali Welsh and Hannah Stortenbecker. Also competing in this round with the same topic as the negative team, was Hillcrest Junior B 2 Debating Team. Though this team missed out on victory by a small margin, they are confident that they will draw from their experience in future debates. The team members include: Tahlia Spence, Harrison Hunter, Mikael van Dyken, Liam Carstens and Angus Cheung. Hillcrest Intermediate B Debating Team has competed in two debates, so far. The Round 1 topic was: “Loyalty is valued”. Hillcrest B lost by one point as the affirmative team in the closest margin allowed in a debate. Round two was, ‘Music that glorifies violent behaviour should be banned’. In this highly controversial topic, the Hillcrest team won by a two point margin as the negative team. The team members include: Georgia Cameron-Dow, Brianna Lynch, Dominique Martin, Owen Lynch and Georgia Irving.
GOLD COAST JUNIOR COUNCIL Mrs Nieuwoudt would like to welcome the newest members of the Gold Coast Junior Council to the program - Shakirra Enright, Ebony Courtney-Eman, Georgia CameronDow and Vivian O'Brien. exchange ideas and provide input. Students are given the opportunity to meet young people from a variety of backgrounds, interests and schools. The program is dynamic and varied, incorporating themes suggested by students. Students are exposed to a range of guest speakers, participate in workshops and have the opportunity to engage in a variety of interesting activities.
2016 GC CAREERS EXPO
The Theme for this years EXPO is Gold Coast’s City and the growing demand for STEAM-related skills. (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ARTS, MATHS)
The growth trend for STEAM-based occupations on the Gold Coast takes in disciplines such as medicine, ICT, engineering, design and science. The Gold Coast is well placed to take advantage of the increasing demand for STEAM employment; our universities have world-class teaching and research facilities and Gold Coast employers are embracing innovation and technology that is driving employment opportunities in occupations that did not even exist five years ago. South East Queensland’s position as a leader in many new technologies has been recognised internationally by the staging of the 2016 World Science Festival in Brisbane. The event brings some of the world’s greatest thought leaders in science to the Gold Coast’s doorstep and showcases local scientists and performers from around the Asia Pacific region. HINTERLAND DISTRICT TRIALS Hillcrest Christian College is a member of the Hinterland Green District Sport Association, which is an avenue for students possessing exceptional ability to progress to South Coast, State and National level representation. There are a wide variety of sports students can trial for and these are listed on the College's Parent Lounge. Any student wanting to trial in any of these sports must see Mr Pauly or email sports@hillcrest.qld.edu.au between 1-2 weeks prior to the trial dates. Students then need to fill out an application form that must be signed by the school (if students don't get this signed, they will not be allowed to trial). Furthermore, is a large amount of students want to trial then Hillcrest may need to perform their own internal trial and send through their top students.

HILLCREST JUNIOR NETBALL The weekend of 16th April was a dawn of a new era with Hillcrest entering its first teams in to the Hinterland District Netball Association Saturday Competition. Hillcrest has entered 4x teams, with one U7, 2x U9 and 1x U10 teams making up our overall squad. This is a very exciting opportunity for parents to have their children train immediately after school with their classmates, while also engaging in a club based competition. This program would not have been possible without the enormous efforts of Mr Mutton, Mrs Geddes and a suite of parent volunteers.

Congratulations to Year 12 student Caleb Monk. In 2015, Caleb was awarded a High Distinction for his Grade 7 Drama and Performance exam through the AMEB. Last week we were informed that Caleb came first in the State of Queensland for this exam! An incredible result from a very talented actor. Caleb will be awarded his prize at a special ceremony at the University of Queensland in June.
Mr Henderson as Director, Mrs Rienecker as Music Director and Ms Hines and Choreographer/Costume Designer have been working incredibly hard for this show. I would like to share with you just a snippet from the program; of Mr Henderson's discussion of the story.
INSTRUMENTAL CONCERT AND SLC MUSIC SHOWCASE The music department has been busy. In the last week of Term 1 we staged our Band and Strings Concert in the Terrace Hall. Around 140 perfomers took the stage in a whole range of groups. The quality and depth of our Instrumental Program is really starting to show, culminating in an outstanding performance from our Senior Concert Band. Congratulations to Mrs Rienecker our Head of Music for coordinating this fine event. Last week, we held our first SLC music showcase for the year. Once again around 150 performers were involved, this time with the focus being choirs, singers and small group items. Once again in the Terrace Hall (as unfortunately our Courtyard venue was rained out) we were privileged to listen to the talents of our students. Our top choirs Bel Canto, Belle Voce and Manchoir are always a thrill to listen to. Just as impressive was the quality of our younger students on display in the vocal department. Congratulations to solo and duet performers Sienna Jak, Bronte Redenbach, Isabella Nunnink, Amber Arnold, Faith Armstrong, Dominic Power on Trumpet and Angus Wong on Piano.

"Seussical is a colourful, musical extravaganza that is fun for the whole family where many of Dr. Seuss’ characters have been lovingly brought to life. Join us on this journey as Jojo’s imagination transports us into the Jungle of Nool and the invisible world of the Whos.
The Cat in the Hat, tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing Whos. Horton faces a double challenge – not only must he protect the Whos from a world of dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community emerge triumphant and remind us that “a person’s a person no matter how small”."
MS MOON IN PARIS Our very own Ms Jenny Moon is currently in Paris on her way to the Anzac Memorial with the Brisbanebased Voices of Birralee. This group has been chosen by the Australian Government following a nationwide bid; to provide the singers at the commemoration services on the Western Front, France from 2015, for five years and during the centenary period. Ms Moon will be directing concerts at churches and major historic venues throughout France culminating in the Anzac Day commemorative service. We wish Ms Moon and her team of singers all the best.

TEACHING, LEARNING & GLOBAL EDUCATION QUALITY TEACHING & LEARNING AT HILLCREST CHRISTIAN COLLEGE
DEVELOPING DIGITAL APPS @ HILLCREST CHRISTIAN COLLEGE
Over the past 12 months we have been working to develop a clear, research-based teaching and learning framework that identify key standards for our teachers. Our Layers of Learning Framework is a set of broad guidelines relating to quality teacher practices and represents the way we teach at Hillcrest Christian College. The framework reflects our College cornerstones and our commitment to a consistent and effective teaching approach so that all students have the best opportunity to learn and reach their full potential.
In what is seen as an exciting leap forward, we have launched the beginnings of yet to be named technology academy at Hillcrest Christian College. Students from across Years 7-10 are learning how to use a complex programming language (C#) to develop apps. Which will be able to be used on a variety of devices and platforms. While many schools may engage their students in learning the basics of programming, our junior secondary students are leading the way in innovation and thinking. This is yet another example of students learning meaningful concepts with state of art computers and technology that many who are much older would struggle with. We await in eager anticipation the outcomes of their ingenious thinking.
AUTHENTIC AND PURPOSEFUL ASSESSMENT
Queensland Education explains the primary purpose of assessment is “to improve student learning. [It is] purposeful, systematic and ongoing.” (Dimensions of Teaching and Learning,, 2014). Gone are the days when assessment consist of exams after exams where students simply regurgitate the facts and figures that they can remember from the term. These days assessments reflect the broad range of skills and processes required by students living in a technology-rich society. Collaboration, problem-solving, focus on real-world context and creativity are examples of components we often see in quality modern assessment pieces. Assessment items should not simply reflect a student’s understanding but it should enhance learning and be clear and explicit to students. One of the key aspects of good assessment is timely and purposeful feedback. This is critical to our students’ further learning and empowering them to know how to improve as they take responsibility for their learning. As Hillcrest Christian College teachers we aim to: A1 use a range of clear and fair assessments including: informal and formal, diagnostic, formative and summative. A2 analyse student data, ensuring consistent and comparable judgements through moderation. A3 provide timely feedback, and consider changes to teaching based on student data. A4 provide clear and comprehensive reporting on student achievement. If your child is having difficulty understanding their assessment piece, encourage them to connect with their teacher and seek clarification.
