ISSUE 1, MONDAY, 30 MARCH 2015 WELCOME to the first of our new College newsletters. These newsletters will be issued fortnightly throughout the term in both electronic and printed form. We hope that they will be a great source of information for you. PRINCIPAL, JEFF DAVIS Last week, I had a great opportunity to visit our international agents in Hong Kong and Japan together with our Director of International Students, Cath Butler. We often take for granted the opportunities we have to worship freely, to openly speak about the word of God without fear of persecution. During my devotions, while I was away, this verse was highlighted to me. It tells us how the Lord is right and He does have a path for us and the light in our eyes through his understanding is clear for others to see. On this trip, it was great to see the excitement that the agents have for the future of Hillcrest Christian College. I would ask you to join with us in prayer that we receive international students, whom we can minister to over the

duration of the next few years. The Christian experience that they will have at Hillcrest is not readily available in their countries which makes it even more essential that we take this opportunity to share the gospel through our ministry at this school. Â I also commend to you our musical team for their incredible efforts in developing the musical, Jesus Christ Superstar and also the music performances. Last Monday night we held our Secondary Showcase event, which highlighted our amazing senior student performers in music, vocal and dance performances. I must take the time to thank our incredible teachers for their diligent, caring and hard work with our students. Clearly, the outcomes of one Term of hard work were evident on this evening and, as a parent and Principal, I was measurably impressed by with quality of the performances. I am looking forward to Jesus Christ, Superstar performances, next Term, where most of these students will again showcase their talents in a College-wide production.

The P&F AGM was held on Monday night, over 70 parents were in attendance to thank the 2014 P&F team for their efforts and especially Shandelle Sievers for her long service on this committee as a member and President. Shandelle has retired from the committee for 2015. I would like to congratulate Renee Watson for her election as P&F President and also the following committee members, who will support her VICE PRESIDENT Shireen Geddes TREASURER Daniel Stepanik SECRETARY Helen Filmer COMMITTEE MEMBERS Shelley Kent and Mia Pyyvaara I am looking forward to working with the 2015 P&F Committee to further Hillcrest Christian College both as a school, but also as a community-minded organisation.

One of the highlights of the last P&F Meeting was the opportunity to hear of our 2020 Vision. This has been supported by an article that states what the school will look like in the year 2020 as we modernise and update our facilities and teaching practices to be more akin with 21st Century learning. I would encourage all parents to READ THIS ARTICLE so they are better informed as to the changes being made and recognise that this article is based on extensive research into best practice from schools all around the globe. Hillcrest Christian College is founded on the tenants of excellent education; personal integrity; evangelism and Christ-centred education. All improvements have been designed to continue the values upon which this school has been built. I have concluded the parent forums for Term 1 and will open further sessions during Term 2. I am enjoying meeting many in the Hillcrest community and listening to their opinions and questions of this amazing school. I would like to thank the parents who have joined the groups to date for their openness but also for their willingness to engage with new ideas and plans for the future. The administration team are working closely with the Board to develop a school-wide concept to deliver an incredible educational platform for all students at Hillcrest Christian College based on the tenants of the foundation stone on which we are established. I encourage you to book in for a session next Term if you have not already attended one prior.

Reading Information Nights This term Year 1 parents and new parents of Year 2 and 3 attended a reading night. This was a very successful evening, where parents had the opportunity to develop skills in tutoring reading at home. Whilst the night focused on how to teach a child to decode words, the elements of comprehension and fluency were also discussed. A similar night for Prep will be held in the Prep classrooms for Prep parents on 1 April at 6:30pm. If you were unable to attend these evenings, but would like to access the information, please contact your teacher.

Swimming Update Swimming lessons this year have changed to an intensive program in the large pool at Somerset College. Lessons are held on consecutive days over a week rather than one lesson a week over an eight week period. This term Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 participated in this intensive swimming program.

Literacy Planet has commenced in the Early Years Literacy Planet is aligned to the Australian Curriculum and is a program designed to help improve students’ literacy learning in a safe, secure, fun online environment.

The Easter Hat Parade will take place on Wednesday 1 April at 9:00am. Please come and join us at the Terrace Hall and the morning tea to follow. Once again this event will be a memorable one; full of song, action and praise for our Lord Jesus Christ.

Prep Career Day On 13 March our Preppies dressed up in the outfit of the job they would like to do when they grow up. So much excitement in the Prep rooms!!!

70 Hillcrest students and staff walked from Burleigh to Southport to raise funds and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation.

This is an important part of our College life and a time for us to come together as a community. We look forward to you joining us for the service.

BEACH-2-BEACH FUNDRAISER  PHOTOS AVAILABLE ON PORTAL On Saturday morning, 71 students from Years 9 to 12 and staff participated in the Beach2Beach walk raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation’s ‘World’s Greatest Shave’. This is the fifth year in a row the College has done this. The group walked the 14 km from Burleigh beach to Southport. After this, Year 11 students BRENDAN FILMER and RYAN WOODWARD had their heads shaved and SARAH WRIGHT and CASSIDY DEMPSEY had their long hair cut short. With all the events that have happened this week (including Crazy Hair Days, the walk and individual fundraising), the College has collectively raised in excess of $2500. This number is still growing, with more donations coming in. An excellent effort from the Hillcrest community. Thanks to the staff who were part of this and worked hard to make it happen. Of particular note, a big thanks to the Year 12 leaders, MR NORMAN POWER and PETER FERNANCE for all their work in making this such a success.

Debating

Federal Parliament comes to Hillcrest

Hillcrest has been chosen to host a Mock Parliament session on the Gold Coast in July.

YEARS 10, 11 AND 12

The Speaker of the House of representatives, HON. BRONWYN BISHOP MP. will host a mock parliament for schools across the Gold Coast. This will be an amazing opportunity for our students to be able to learn about the way Federal government works in a hands on situation.

Tutoring for Years 10-12 Hillcrest has formed a partnership with Mighty Minds Educational Consultants to provide tutoring to our year 10 to 12 students. We are offering small group tutorials to help for students 2 afternoons a week. Over the first four weeks we have seen a huge uptake by our students. They have been receiving help with their class work, assignments and

To book help from a tutor students need to visit the library and record their name in the tutor book at the front desk. If a session is full students can put their name down on a waiting list. Students can book ahead to the end of term.

SENIOR YEARS Easter Service The Hillcrest Community invite you to join us for the Secondary Easter Service on Thursday 2 April at 9:00 am as we celebrate the John 3:16 promise.

In our second year of Debating at Hillcrest we have 3 teams entered into the Gold Coast Secondary Schools Debating competition. Junior B – Grade 7, Intermediate B, Year 10 and Senior B Year 11 and 12. As part of our commitment to Debating we have taken on the role of hosting Debating Evenings for the Gold Cast region. On March 4 Hillcrest had the pleasure of hosting the first round of the Senior B debating competition. Twenty six schools in 13 rooms debated the topic – Governments should restrict freedom of speech. The Hillcrest senior team – DANIELLE ARCHER, SHANNON LABUSCHAGNE, KATIE WARD and EMMA TAYLOR debated as the negative team. We won convincingly against All Saints Anglican School, who were the affirmative team. The girl’s main argument was that, if freedom of speech was restricted, then they would not even be able to debate the topic. Last week on March 11, our Junior and Intermediate teams debated their first round.


JESSICA COLEMAN, MOLLY SWANSON, ZALI WELSH and GRACIE PRASSER debated in the affirmative that – Cats made better pets than dogs. This was the Year 7s first ever debate and they had a convincing win against All Saints Anglican School. Our third win came from our third team: SHAKIRRA ENRIGHT, JEMIMA ROZE, EBONY COURTNEY-EMAN and CHANTEL SPENCE. The Intermediate team won against Coomera Anglican College in their debate, stating that - Space exploration is not a waste of money. Our final speaker concluding with the apt comment that – If we have our heads in the clouds, we might as well have a look around while we are there. Thanks must go to MRS LEAH MAY and MR DAREN MALLETT for the work they are doing with our students and developing a culture of Debating in the College.

New Sails for the Secondary Courtyard Term 2 will see the installation of a sail structure over most of the secondary courtyard. This has been helped by a contribution of $25,000 by the College P&F, for which we are very grateful. This is the first part of a refurbishment of the covered areas in Secondary. The aim is to create a streetscape for the students, staff and wider community to use. The art department is already making plans to enhance the new area by creating silk banners, preparing art work for display along with the painting of a piano to be put permanently outdoors for student use. The Year 12 Gift to the College in 2014 of an outdoor chess set will also be installed in this new structure. Café tables and retro coloured seating have been purchased for the new area and are currently being used by the Year 11’s.

District Sport Trials Swimming 2015  PHOTOS AVAILABLE ON PORTAL With the 2015 swimming season coming to a close, I would like to recognise the outstanding contributions to the success of this program. From the perspective of staff, students and parents, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to those who warmly embraced the concept of combining the Primary and Secondary carnivals. This approach built an atmosphere of engagement and enthusiasm with the students and it proved to be a concept that will be embraced in future years. Chosen from this carnival was a squad of 34 students who represented Hillcrest at the Hinterland Green swimming carnival at TSS. The energetic approach to this carnival by all students is commended, with special mention to GIDEON BURNES (4), CORBAN SIEVERS (10), CHARLOTTE PERKINS (7) and ELLA PERKINS (9) each representing Hillcrest at the Hinterland District Swimming Carnivals. Well done to all students and thank you to the parent body in your continual support of the broader sports program at Hillcrest.

Interschool Sport The Primary and Secondary Interschool sport competitions are well underway. It is fantastic to see the energy and sportsmanship shown from all students. Formal training takes place on Monday (Year 7-8) and Wednesday afternoons (Year 5-6).

Parents are encouraged to be part interschool games and competitions as supporters or volunteer coaches/referees. If you are available to assist in these capacities on a Thursday or Friday between 12-3pm, please contact the sports department on

On Tuesday 31st March, the Interhouse Primary and Secondary Cross Country Carnivals will be held on the Hillcrest campus. These carnivals will be held independently of each other with the Primary carnival held in the morning and the Secondary in the afternoon. This will be a fantastic day of community, culture and healthy competition. If you have not already done so from your email provided to the school, please download the following information letters about the carnivals. These also have a section to indicate whether you are available to assist on the day, which would be greatly appreciated.

SOCCER 15 YEARS & UNDER Tuesday 28 April Any student wishing to participate in these trials must fill out the district trials booklet and have MR PAULY sign it before trialing.

CHESS COMPETITION The first of our 2015 Chess competitions was held recently on the MPH verandah. A beautiful autumn day and our very excited and boisterous Early Years Chess players made for a perfect morning of chess. It is so exciting to see the progress in chess skills that our

players have made in recent years. Many of the players attend all the competitions and the friendly, but fierce, rivalry between these students is a delight to watch. Importantly, the students displayed most pleasing manners as they battled their way through eight rounds. Students are learning to be magnanimous when they win and to be gracious when they lose. We welcomed a number of Year 1 and Year 2 players today and they, no doubt, showed they will be a serious threat to our more senior Chess “Generals” in the coming years. LEARNING AND TEACHING Evidence confirms that excellent teaching is the single most powerful in-school influence on student achievement (Hattie, 2003; OECD, 2005). One of our four cornerstones at Hillcrest Christian College is academic excellence and we are committed to continuing to review, evaluate and develop strong teaching practices across all areas and year levels from P-12. Hillcrest Christian College has been accepted into a number of programs facilitated by the Independent Schools of Queensland Association. These projects focus on developing quality educational practices among our teaching staff. These programs are:

• Great Teachers in Independent Schools: Mentoring Program • Literacy and Numeracy Coaching Academy • Self-Improving Schools Program Each of these initiatives gives our teachers and leaders opportunities to connect with consultants and experts in education as we continue to grow our professional learning culture.

Year 7 and 9 Mighty Minds Online Testing Literacy and Numeracy are both learning areas that continue to remain key aspects of our focus. This year we have partnered up

with Mighty Minds Educational Consultants to help ensure we are able to meet the needs of our Year 7 and 9 students’ individual needs. Earlier this term students participated in a series of online diagnostic tests in numeracy and literacy, including reading, language conventions and writing. With the help of Mighty Mind’s data analysis expertise, we are now able to identify areas needing additional support for each student.

TUTORING Hillcrest Christian College offers a variety of free in-house group tutoring sessions during the week where students can connect with a teacher to receive extra help with assignments, homework or classwork. This information is updated each term so for the most accurate information please refer to the family portal.

We are currently finishing off the final touches of our differentiated literacy and numeracy lessons based on this data. These lessons will occur throughout the rest of this term and the first half of next term.

PERFORMING ARTS WELCOME TO PERFORMING ARTS

Year 5 Music Program

It is with great delight that I introduce the commencement of Hillcrest’s year in Performing Arts, as your new Director. We have a big vision for Performing Arts in our College; to be a national leader in Vocal and Instrumental Music, Dance, Drama and Musicals; and to be working on the cutting edge of arts programs internationally. We have a wonderful team of professionals in the department who share this vision. You can be assured that as the year progresses, you will see and hear some of the wonderful plans we are putting together to achieve our vision; some of the great PA happenings and achievements thus far are below. On a personal note, I am grateful for the huge welcome to the Hillcrest community, and I look forward to working with you and your students in the years to come.

One of the new initiatives in the department for 2015 is the Year 5 all-inclusive Instrumental Music program. This means every single student in the grade receives tuition on a band or string instrument, plus gets to play in a concert band or

I believe in equality if access to the opportunity to try a musical instrument, and I also believe in students and parents making an informed choice through a hands-on experience. Each Thursday, the students have been receiving tuition on their instrument, plus the Year Five Concert Band and String Orchestra have already started rehearsing. You will see the students in action lots this year with scheduled performances at the College and at the Gold Coast Eisteddfod. It is such an awesome opportunity for students to grow musically and enjoy all the huge academic and brain-related benefits that go with learning a musical instrument. Choral Excellence Camp On Friday 27th February, 75 choristers from Bel Canto Bella Voce plus 7 staff, headed up to Mount Tambourine for the annual Choral Excellence Camp. The students worked incredibly hard for the weekend under our Head of Vocal and Choral Music, MS JENNY MOON; and our guest director, the Internationally-renowned choral director MS CLAIRE PRESTON. Ms Preston has a long career having worked in the world famous Toronto Children’s Chorus, the VCA

Last Monday evening, our Senior Instrumental and Vocal groups showcased their work for term one in the Theatre. The standard of performance was so high for early on in the year and I look forward to what our groups can achieve in 2015. Of special mention were the soloists and small groups who performed – CHLOE DEETLEFS, HARRY POWER, DOMINIC POWER, EMILY SUTER, JAYDE CASTLES and the flute trio. Speech and Drama Building your child’s self confidence, speech and ability to speak in public is truly a life-long skill. At Hillcrest we have a specialised Speech and Drama teacher who takes students for lessons in Speech and drama. MRS JAN BONIWELL LSDA is our teacher. Lessons are ½ hour and are held each week on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Cost for small group lessons – up to 4 students - is $120.00 per term per student. Individual lessons are $260.00 per term. A 10% family discount applies when there are 2 or more S&D students from the same family. Those up to 13 year olds are encouraged to participate in

COLLEGE NEWS BYOD UPDATE We are still working through our BYOD Program and hope to have further information for parents during Term 2. If you can, please hold off on new device purchases for your children. Loan devices are available, if necessary, and can be organised by completing a loan form located on the BYOD part of the family portal. IT Support will coordinate this for you.If a student does not have a device for a day, one can be borrowed from the Library.

ANZAC Day 100 year Commemoration Ceremony We invite you to join us as we commemorate 100 years since the landing in Gallipoli by the ANZACs. The service will be at 8:30 am on Friday 24 April in the MPC. It is a time to remember and to reflect.

Accounts FEES Fees are always due the second Friday of each term. Thank you to all those families who have paid their Term 1 fees or entered into a payment arrangement with the Accounts Office. If you have not yet paid Term 1 fees please know that they are now overdue and we expect you to settle your account promptly to ensure continuation of Enrolment. BUS PASSES The closing date for payment of Discounted Bus passes is always the second Friday of each term. All bus passes can be purchased from the Accounts Department.

SHUTTLE BUS TO AND FROM THE TRAIN STATION Please note that trips to and from the Train Station are $1 each way and this money can be paid at the Accounts Office.

Lest we forget Last year we applied for an ANZAC DAY commemoration grant to install a new flag pole. We received acknowledgement a few weeks ago that we funding would be available for this. On Thursday 19 March the flagpole was installed and the Flag raised for the first time. Year 6 students, as part of their leadership role, will take on the responsibility of maintaining the flag.

The College has a Direct Debit facility available. A form can be downloaded from our Family Portal or you can have one emailed to you from the Accounts Office. You can opt to have payments debited from your Bank Account or a Credit Card. INTERNATIONAL HOMESTAY FAMILIES NEEDED

HISTORICAL EXCURSION

Have you ever considered inviting an International Student to be a part of your family in a short or long term capacity? With International enrolments increasing, we would like to invite families from Hillcrest to consider hosting International Students long term (throughout the year, continuously) and / or short term (one week to 4 weeks at a time in either a single or double placement). Families are paid to function as a homestay and are expected to provide for students: three meals a day (school lunch during the week), their own bedroom, and their own study area. If you have the space, and this is something you think your family would enjoy, please contact MRS GAIL MULLER in the International Department for more information

On Wednesday the 25th of February, all the International Students from Year Seven to Year Twelve, went to the Beenleigh Historical Village where they learnt about what life was like for the early colonists and pioneers. Although it was a hot day, there were many enjoyable moments: like climbing all over the old firetruck!

AQUA ENGLISH While the rest of the school was enjoying the Swimming Carnival on the 9th of February, five International Students accompanied by MS BUTLER and MR HAWKINS travelled to the Southport Aquatic Centre and Main Beach, Southport for an Aqua English Class. This program is one of a kind and exposes International Students to the important English words, signs and principles of water safety, with a special focus on beach safety. To our knowledge, Hillcrest Christian College is one of the only schools to make this program compulsory for International Students, thus ensuring a degree of safety for them while engaging in water activities during their stay In Australia.

OVERSEAS INTRODUCTIONS In the week of the 8th of March, the previous Director of the International Student Department, MRS DIANE GALLACHER, accompanied MR JEFF DAVIS and MS CATHERINE BUTLER to Hong Kong, China and Japan to meet the existing Education Agents whom we hold agreements with, and to make some new connections. In addition to meeting agents, and participating in a Japanese Tea Ceremony at Fuji High School, we also had some very enjoyable social gatherings with current and past student’s parents.
