The Yorkshire Dales landscape has many moods; it can be wild and windswept or quietly tranquil.

Did you know..? Yorkshire Dales National Park was designated in 1954 in recognition of its extraordinary natural beauty, the diversity of its wildlife habitats, its rich cultural heritage and its fantastic opportunities for outdoor recreation. Covering a stunning 2,179 square kilometres (841 square miles), the National Park is not a wilderness area, but a living, working environment, home to 24,000 people. It’s one of a family of 15 National Parks in the UK, protected for future generations to enjoy. It’s Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority’s job to care for this very special place and its communities, and to help people understand, enjoy and share in it.

It includes some of the finest limestone scenery in the UK, from crags and pavements to an underground labyrinth of caves. Each valley or ‘dale’ has its own distinct character, set against expansive heather moorland tops. Stone-built villages sit amongst traditional farming landscapes of field barns, drystone walls and flower-rich hay meadows, and show how the area has been shaped over thousands of years by the people who have lived and worked here. Spectacular waterfalls and ancient broadleaved woodland contrast with the scattered remains of former mine workings and other rural industries which remind us of the area’s rich industrial heritage. Together, nature and people have created a special landscape of immense beauty and character.

Wharfedale Given its steep hills, great views and rocky crags, it’s no surprise that Wharfedale is popular with walkers. Popular routes include the Dales Way along the River Wharfe, Grass Woods, and the fascinating leadmining remains on Grassington Moor, brought to life by a series of interpretation panels. Kirkby Stephen & the Westmorland Dales

The Howgills and northern Pennines are a stunning backdrop to some quite wonderful walking, cycling and horseriding country, with both easy going valley routes and more challenging climbs to take on. The Coast to Coast, Pennine Journey and Lady Anne’s Way long distance trails converge here and Stonetrail Holidays offer bike hire and horse riding from their base right on the Pennine Bridleway National Trail. Kirkby Stephen is a vibrant market town, with individual shops, galleries, and the Upper Eden Visitor Centre for all the information you need for a visit.

The atmospheric ruins of 12th century Pendragon Castle in Mallerstang

The old Stainmore Railway line - built to bring coal from the Tees Valley to Cumbria - now offers some great walking routes. The Northern Viaducts Trail takes in part of the old trackbed, while another section takes walkers over the spectacular 14 arch Smardale Gill Viaduct straddling Scandal Beck. Rail enthusiasts have restored a further section of line at Kirkby Stephen East station and run it as a visitor attraction with train rides and special events. You can also take a trip on the famous Settle-Carlisle mainline railway along the Eden Valley all the way to Carlisle.

The parish church features a Loki Stone, which probably came across with the Vikings who settled in the area. Only two such carved stones, named after the Norse god, are known of in Europe. Wild Boar Fell dominates the skyline of the remote Mallerstang valley. Here you will find the atmospheric ruins of Pendragon Castle with its reputed connection to Uther Pendragon - the father of King Arthur. Nearby Lammerside features a Pele Tower - a defensive building against Scottish raiders. High on the fells of Great Asby Scar, with its huge expanse of limestone pavement and fantastic views to the Lake District and North Pennines, is an old fortified settlement, Castle Folds.

Nestled in the Eden Valley within easy reach of the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines. We welcome tourers, campers and glampers. Perfectly placed on the Coast to Coast walking and cycle route. Spacious pitches, dogs welcome, hot showers, free wifi. Destination Dales

Make tracks Yorkshire Dales National Park is very accessible by road. The M6 skirts it to the west, the A66 is to the north, the A1 to the east and the A65 and A59 south (see map on centre pages). But car travel can have an impact on this special environment - so why not give your car a holiday, too? There’s no better way to travel to or around the National Park than by train or bus. Taking public transport means you can relax and enjoy the scenery - and see over the top of drystone walls!

All aboard Taking the bus is an excellent way of enjoying the views without having to worry about keeping your eyes on the road. It helps reduce congestion and parking problems, as well as opening up the possibility of some fantastic linear walks back to your car. For a relaxed ride and truly local experience jump on one of the services that provide links between the main towns and villages and surrounding area. These are supplemented by extra services during the summer, mainly Sundays and BankHolidays - visit www.dalesbus.org or contact Traveline on 0871 200 22 33 or www.traveline.info for more information.

Under steam on Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway (Stephen Garnett Photography)

Many of the most scenic and popular parts of the National Park can be explored by train, bus, bike, foot or horseback, and events have been scheduled to link in with timetables wherever possible. By leaving your car behind for just a few days during your trip you will be making a valuable contribution to the Dales’ future wellbeing.

Sweet dreams There is a fabulous range of accommodation available in the Yorkshire Dales to suit every taste and pocket, from B&Bs to bunk barns and youth hostels to yurts.

With the East Coast Mainline to the east, the Leeds-Lancaster Line to the south, and the Settle-Carlisle Line to the west, the train is a great way of getting here. And whatever you do, don’t miss a trip on the historic Settle-Carlisle railway. This gives fantastic access to the heart of the National Park on one of the most spectacular train journeys in England as it rumbles over Ribblehead Viaduct and through Blea Moor Tunnel. Stops include Hortonin-Ribblesdale (perfect for the Yorkshire Three Peaks), Dent (the highest mainline station in England), and Garsdale (to connect to Hawes). Timetables for the daily service can be found at www.settle-carlisle.co.uk and for special steam services visit www.uksteam.info

Plan your trip

The trains to Skipton and Ilkley and on the Settle-Carlisle line all carry bikes. No booking is required, but space can be limited, so rush hour services are best avoided. Our dedicated cycling website www.cyclethedales.org.uk can tell you more, including the great trails you can enjoy when you get here.

including access advice for those who are less mobile, your dog in the countryside, and where to find WiFi hotspots - visit our website at www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/ plan-your-visit

Four Seasons in one Dales Yorkshire Dales National Park has a mood for every time of year. Whether visiting in spring, summer, autumn or winter, there is always something wonderful to discover and do.

SPRING As the days lengthen and the temperature rises, the first flowers begin to bloom in earnest. Listen out for the drowsy buzzing of bumblebees - the lucky queens that survived the winter are the first to take advantage. The National Park turns into a nursery at this time of year. Spring lambs (known as hoggs until their first shearing at around 14 months) are found in lower fields, and cows, which overwintered in barns, are turned out to share the fields with ground nesting birds. There’s nothing that says spring has arrived more than the haunting, bubbling cry of the returning curlew as it looks for a mate.

Between March and July it is important to keep dogs on leads but, if you feel threatened by cattle, let your dog go.

Farmers are glad to see the green flush of new grass on the Dales’ limestone pasture as it means they no longer have to supplement their animals’ feed.

Get up close to small water-loving beasties on a Go Wild! streamdipping event at Malham on 26 May or 23 July.

April showers swell the rivers that have helped shape the Dales over the centuries, causing them to thunder over the National Park’s spectacular waterfalls. Experience the drama at Aysgarth Falls or Hardraw Force - the longest single drop waterfall in England. The unpolluted waters are also great for spotting wildlife, not only fish, but birds like dipper and kingfisher. Take the time to stop, look and listen quietly. If you go down to the woods in late spring you’ll be in for a big treat. A carpet of bluebells could welcome you on the footpaths through Freeholders’ Wood at Aysgarth Falls or Strid Wood near Bolton Abbey, alongside the pungent smell of wild garlic. Woodlands are also the best place to hear the dawn chorus and if you’re very lucky you might just glimpse a roe deer.

SUMMER Upland hay meadows come alive with wildflowers, insects and small mammals like field voles. Look out for stoats hunting along the line of a drystone wall. Swaledale has some of the finest meadows. Imagine what it was like during the hot, hard work of haymaking later in the summer and how welcome the ‘drinkings’ were - food and drink brought out and shared. Look skyward in July and you might spot the fastest animal in the world - the peregrine falcon. For over 20 years breeding pairs have nested at Malham Cove. As the young prepare to fly the nest 10 | Visit the Yorkshire Dales National Park online at www.yorkshiredales.org.uk

Remember, always stick to paths and walk single file. Haymeadows are beautiful but fragile, and, to a farmer, mean winter food for their stock.

you can watch them through high powered telescopes at the RSPB and National Park Authority viewpoint. As evening draws in, keep an eye overhead too for bats chasing moths for their supper. Join a bat walk for expert help spotting and identifying the different species (see our ‘What’s On’ listing on pages 23 to 46). Traditional agricultural shows such as Malham (29 August), Kilnsey (1 September) and Muker (2 September) have long been at the heart of local communities in the Yorkshire Dales. Many can trace their origins back over a century and have their own distinct traditions.

With activities such as fell racing, livestock classes and sheepdog trials, the day has always been a chance for isolated farming families to get together and for visitors to have a great family day out. The shows also offer a welcome break from haymaking, an important summer task for farmers as they think ahead to feeding their animals through winter.

AUTUMN September is a fine month for walking, horse riding and mountain biking. Mild weather, fewer visitors and moorlands bursting with heather at the start of the month make it a perfect time to explore the many bridleways in the National Park. Evening light and striking sunsets provide great photo opportunities. Climb a hill on a crisp clear day and admire the view. You’ll share the countryside with farmers who work long into the night harvesting their second cut of silage. Repairs to the famous drystone walls of the Yorkshire Dales are also underway. The skies come alive as the nights draw in. The lack of light pollution makes the National Park a stunning place for stargazing. On a cloudless night turn off your torch and just stand and stare (read more about the Dales’ dark sky on pages 52-53).

Autumn is a good time of year to try red squirrel spotting as they dash about gathering winter supplies. Take our self-guided trail round the special viewing point at Snaizeholme reserve - see www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/ red-squirrel-trail or ask at Hawes National Park Centre.

Around now dormice go into hibernation. Along with hedgehogs and bats they are one of only three British mammals to do so. It’s also a great time to stock up on autumnal fare at farmers markets - wild mushrooms, game and preserves could be on offer. Farmers put the sheep bought at auction in October to work as tupping (mating) begins. The hundred-year-old Hawes Auction Mart is the only livestock market inside the National Park and a visit on sales day is a real experience.

WINTER Escape the Christmas traffic and head to the country! Why not jump aboard and take one of the world’s best train journeys along the historic Settle-Carlisle line, travelling through the Three Peaks, over Ribblehead Viaduct, and past the highest mainline station in England at Dent.

Visit industrial heritage sites like Ribblehead Viaduct, and Old Gang smelt mill in Swaledale to appreciate the hardship faced by workers in these isolated places in times past. Or escape the cold at indoor attractions like the Dales Countryside Museum. Discover more ideas at www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/ attractions

carried out in the winter months whilst ‘the sap is down’ and tree planting begins as they are less likely to get damaged in the dormant winter months. Rangers hurry to finish path repairs before the worst of the winter weather sets in. New Year, and above ground the temperature may dip to its lowest, but underground it is a constant surface average year-round. The National Park has some of the finest and most extensive limestone caves - known as karst - in Britain, and three showcaves to visit White Scar Cave, Stump Cross Caverns and Ingleborough Cave. Winter brings frost and snow. A thin ground covering can highlight archeological features: ancient field systems, outlines of deserted settlements, and the bumps of Bronze Age burial cairns. Look out too for otter tracks in the snow along riverbanks. This shy animal is making a strong return in the Dales, but they are usually only out and about at night. Finding a set of footprints is almost as thrilling as seeing the animal as it means it is thriving.

Swaledale & Arkengarthdale The National Park’s two far northern dales, with their classic farming landscape of field barns and drystone walls, are the perfect spot to retreat from the hubbub of modern life. The little village of Keld at the head of Swaledale is a crossing point for three long-distance walks: the Pennine Way, the Coast to Coast, and the Herriot Way. It’s also at one end of the Swale Trail - a 20km (12mile) route for mountain bikes starting from Reeth, and a great way to experience Upper Swaledale and test your off-road cycling skills. Bring your own bikes, or hire them from Dales Bike Centre in Reeth.

The hardy Swaledale sheep is the emblem for the National Park

For a truly authentic Yorkshire Dales experience

The Keld Countryside & Heritage Centre brings local history to life, and in the winter months the village operates a selfservice tearoom for walkers with an honesty box and a magical supply of homemade cakes. The River Swale flows along the valley and is lined with stone-built villages, such as Muker with its well-known wool shop, and Gunnerside where the King’s Head pub has recently been reopened by Swaledale locals Fiona and Neil Bowe. In the valley bottoms, the stunning wildflower haymeadows are at their best in early summer. Throughout the area, you’ll come across the scattered remains of former industry, such as Old Gang Lead Mine and Grinton Smelt Mill. Find out about the harsh life of a miner at the Swaledale Museum in Reeth.

Limekilns, Langcliffe Mill & Leaping Salmon

Distance: 4½ miles Time: allow 3 hours, with time to explore the historic Craven Lime Works site Terrain: mainly flat, but uneven in places; the riverside footpath can be very muddy after wet weather!

This fascinating walk gives a glimpse into Ribblesdale’s industrial past, including a 19th century hidden wonder - the Hoffmann Kiln. The first part alongside the river follows the Ribble Way, one of several longdistance footpaths running through the National Park.

From Stainforth National Park car park 1 take the path by the stream under the B6479 into the picnic area and up to a hand gate. Turn left and continue to follow the path as it bends right along a walled lane until you reach the road 2 .

Facilities: Stainforth has a pay-and-display car park, toilets, picnic area and pub, The Craven Heifer.

Built in 1675, the Stainforth bridge would have had low parapets to avoid obstructing panniers on the horse’s back, and was a favourite picnic spot of the composer, Edward Elgar, when staying with his friend Dr Buck in Settle. The ‘stony ford’ that predated the bridge gave Stainforth its name.

Continue on beside the river through a handgate and over stone stiles until eventually reaching an iron footbridge 4 . Take a moment to look back at the well worn paved path to Stackhouse which must have rung to the sound of millworkers’ clogs every morning and evening. After crossing the footbridge, bear right between the double row of former millworkers cottages. Turn left past the last house, and follow the path round to the right and alongside the large mill pond 5 which once supplied Langcliffe High Mill 6 .

Built on the site of a corn mill in 1793 by three Lancashire entrepreneurs, Langcliffe High Mill was one of Yorkshire’s earliest and largest cotton spinning mills. From the age of 10, children were allowed to work in the mill part time (with school in the morning) and full time from 14. The mill was greatly enlarged in the early 19th century when steam power was brought in, and in the 1820s the company began weaving cotton, with the looms eventually housed in what is now Watershed Mill half a mile downstream. In the 1950s it was converted to papermaking. Continue round the edge of the mill site and then ahead up a narrow walled footpath. As you cross the bridge over the Settle-Carlisle railway line, look out for Pen-y-ghent in the distance 7 . When you reach the B6479, carefully cross over into Langcliffe village. Go straight ahead between the houses and bear left at Cock House, built in 1809 as the village workhouse. Continue past the memorial fountain and take Pike Lane on your left by the village car park. Follow it into a walled grassy Stainforth’s 17th century packhorse bridge

lane heading north. Take the public footpath on your left signposted to Stainforth through fields, and then alongside the railway line into the site of the former Craven Lime Works 8 . Take time to explore this amazing piece of industrial history following the interpretation panels which form a trail around the whole site - including the impressive Hoffmann Kiln 9 . The construction of the Settle-Carlisle Railway made heavy industry, such as lime-burning, possible in Langcliffe, with the lime used to make mortar for building. Craven Lime Works has important examples of several types of limekiln with the Hoffmann Kiln one of the best-preserved examples in England. Built in 1873, it had 22 individual chambers where limestone was continuously burnt in a circuit that took around six weeks to complete. The quarried limestone was carefully placed in the chambers by hand. Coal was mixed in and, when lit, more was dropped in from chutes above. Behind the burning zone two or three chambers were allowed to cool so that the lime could be shovelled out and onto waiting railway wagons. The operation was highly labour intensive and provided local employment, but the working conditions were unhealthy and dangerous.

After exploring the kiln interior, continue on the footpath north across fields and over a gated stream. Taitlands, the large private house on your left, was built in 1831 for Thomas Redmayne, a West Yorkshire mill owner with quarrying interests in Ribblesdale, and became a youth hostel in 1942 10 . Finally, take the roadside path back into the village and car park. Want to hear more? Join our expert leaders on a guided walk (The Craven Lime Works, 19 August). Come in the autumn and you could witness the incredible sight of Atlantic salmon leaping up Stainforth Force to the spawning grounds upstream (The Industrial Past of Ribblesdale & the Leaping Salmon, 10 and 17 October). Skipton & Bolton Abbey The 130-mile long Leeds-Liverpool Canal, one of the early achievements of the Industrial Revolution, runs through the heart of Skipton. It celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2016 and now offers narrowboat day trips and canalside walks. Originally a trading centre for sheep and wool - its name Sceap Tun meant ‘sheep town’ - Skipton grew up around its magnificent 900 year old castle and market place. These days visitors can enjoy re-enactments and other historic events in the castle grounds, and still visit the town’s regular artisan markets held in the canal basin.

The 20 acres of parkland at Aireville Park contain skateboard and pump tracks, and the new Raven Tree Top Adventure, a high ropes adventure course. Craven Swimming Pool & Fitness Centre, also in the park, has two swimming pools, a fitness centre, café, sauna and steam room. The livestock auction mart, on the edge of the town, transforms into an unusual arts venue for annual events such as Art in the Pen and Yarndale, as well as hosting plays, comedians and bands. The perfect gateway to the National Park, Skipton boasts many pubs, cafés, shops, and hotels - plus a cinema - and is easily accessed by train from Leeds and Bradford.

Hesketh Farm Park is a great family day out with animals and fun tractor rides, a unique hands-on experience of farm life. For steam buffs there is Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. Now restored and run by enthusiasts, the track winds its way back and forth between the village and the abbey. Visit www.welcometoskipton.com for more information.

Sedbergh, Dentdale & The Howgills Nestled beneath the Howgill Fells - the distinctive rounded hills described by writer and walker Alfred Wainwright as looking like ‘a herd of sleeping elephants is the market town of Sedbergh. As befits its status as one of England’s ‘book towns’, it has many second hand book shops. It also boasts a huge variety of eateries from quirky tea rooms to award-winning dining experiences, including former 17th century coaching inn, the Black Bull. Restored Victorian wool mill, Farfield Mill Arts & Heritage Centre, sits a mile outside Sedbergh. Here you can watch artists and craftspeople at work in their studios, as well as enjoy the changing exhibitions, shop and tearoom. The dramatic waterfall of Cautley Spout is reached from the Cross Keys, a 400-yearold temperance inn, now owned by the National Trust.

The area is central to the history of the Quaker movement. Climb up to Fox’s Pulpit, the hillside spot where George Fox preached in 1652 and thought of as the start of the society, before visiting the peaceful meeting house at Brigflatts, which is open to all. The cobbled streets of Dent village are home to the award-winning George & Dragon pub with its own micro-brewery, and the town’s centrepiece: a memorial fountain to its most famous son, Adam Sedgwick, considered the founding father of modern geology.

Dent Station is the highest mainline station in England at 1,100 feet and a stop on the historic Settle-Carlisle railway line. At the Dent Heritage Centre you can find out about the mining of the black marble synonymous with the dale, as well as the story of the ‘terrible knitters of Dent’.

Kirkby Lonsdale & the Lune Valley With buildings dating back hundreds of years clustered around a narrow cobbled street and market square, Kirkby Lonsdale is an historic town with lots to interest visitors.

Intersecting these fells is the peaceful valley of Barbondale. Visit The Churchmouse café and village store in the village of Barbon for tempting delights and speciality cheeses.

The spectacular span of Devil’s Bridge has a riverside picnic area and famous snack wagon. A well-known viewpoint over the River Lune, Ruskin’s View, was painted by the renowned eighteenth century landscape artist J M W Turner.

Settle, Ingleton & the Three Peaks The market town of Settle - home to the world’s oldest music hall and an eclectic mix of cafés and outdoor suppliers - is synonymous with the famous SettleCarlisle Railway. The historic line winds its way across the western Dales, crossing a series of stunning viaducts - including Ribblehead (completed in 1874) - and passing through the 1½ mile long Blea Moor tunnel. Both are incredible feats of Victorian engineering.

2020 will see a series of special events celebrating the life and work of Clapham’s famous son, plant collector and writer Reginald Farrer. Brought up at Ingleborough Hall, the limestone landscapes of Reginald’s childhood inspired a love of exploration and a passion for plants that could survive in rocky environments.

Ingleborough Cave, reached from Clapham with its pubs and tearooms, is linked to the famous pothole of Gaping Gill. Britain’s longest show cave - White Scar - sits at the foot of Ingleborough on the road between Ingleton and Hawes. The waterfalls of Stainforth Force and Catrigg Force make great walks and

Attermire Scar is a good climb. For cyclists, there are some super rides to tackle, including the 10 mile Settle Loop which forms part of the Pennine Bridleway. Visit www.thisisingleton.co.uk and www.visitsettle.co.uk for more information.

i

Following university, he travelled to Europe and Asia in search of new alpine species and some of his finds can be now be seen around the village and along the nature trail dedicated to him. Reginald’s famously eccentric solution to the problem of planting on the rocky outcrop across the lake was to pack his seeds into a shotgun, row a boat close by, and fire them towards the cliffs in the hope that they would find a fertile resting place. Starry, starry night

There are four official Dark Sky Discovery Sites at Hawes and Malham National Park Centres, Buckden National Park car park, and Tan Hill Inn. Open to the public, accessible to all abilities, and with car parking and other facilities on site, they offer a grandstand view of the starry sky in all its glory.

Watching the calendar is essential to knowing when the best times are to go stargazing, with the lunar cycle and of course the weather being key factors. It’s easiest to see the stars if there is no Moon, so look out for the new Moon phases.

Starry sky over Malham Tarn (Chris Werrett)

Try to avoid looking at any lights as it can take up to 20 mins for your night vision to come back!

When was the last time you stood still and looked up at the night sky? Gazing up in the dark at the stars and imagining a tantalising world beyond is a great way to put the daily hustle and bustle in perspective. With large expanses completely free from light pollution, Yorkshire Dales National Park is a very special place to experience a truly dark sky and start your stargazing adventure. On a clear night it is possible to see the Milky Way as well as the planets and meteors - and not forgetting our Moon. You could see as many as 2,000 stars, pick out the red glow of Mars or the finer details of constellations such as Orion the Hunter. You might even catch the brilliant dancing glow of the Northern Lights, when activity and

conditions are right, as well as the International Space Station travelling at 17,000mph overhead. Even if you only have a set of binoculars or a simple telescope it is possible to pick out details on heavenly bodies that would be invisible from a city. Be patient. As your eyes adjust to the darkness, the more you will see. And wear warm clothing as clear nights are also the most chilly! For tips on viewing the sky at night, and what to look for and when, pick up our ‘Stargazing’ leaflet from National Park Centres or visit www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/stargazing

The best time to view the stars is from mid-August through to early May. A great excuse - if you needed one! - to visit the Dales in autumn and winter. Winter is the best time to see star clusters and constellations, spring is best for planets, and autumn is best for the Milky Way.

Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Park - together with Nidderdale AONB, teamed up to hold our fifth annual Dark Skies Festival in February 2020. Read more about this thrilling celebration of our sky at night with full moon trail rides, mobile planetarium, rocket making, dark sky themed menus and much more - at www.yorkshiredales. org.uk/dark-skies-festival. And keep your (owl) eyes peeled for news of next year’s event!

Yours to explore! With miles of glorious rights of way, brilliant climbing, two National Trails and the longest cave system in Britain, the Yorkshire Dales is a fantastic place to get outdoors. There are opportunities for everyone to breathe deeply and indulge in a relaxing riverside picnic or take a stroll. You don’t have to be an adrenaline junkie to enjoy what this stunning 841 square miles has to offer - though there are plenty of opportunities for you, too. Head to our website at www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/get-outdoors to find out more.

Step up If walks are what you’re after, then you’ve come to the right place. The National Park is criss-crossed with superb long distance trails, including the Coast to Coast, Dales Way, Pennine Way and Pennine Bridleway, which can all be enjoyed as day walks. And then there are the hills, including Yorkshire’s famous Three Peaks. For ideas and downloadable routes, go to www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/ walking - and for shorter, more accessible options visit our ‘Miles without Stiles’ section.

This year’s Tour de Yorkshire features a ‘Three Peaks Stage’ on 1 May which will take the world’s top riders right through the National Park. Rolling out from Skipton, they will race past Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside, before climbing the world famous Buttertubs Pass. For more information and the best spots to watch, visit letour.yorkshire.com

Saddle up Horseriders have a network of over 900km of bridleways to try, a fantastic mixture of Roman roads, monastic highways, mining tracks and ancient droving routes. Find approved trekking centres, as well as guidance on planning your own route, at www.yorkshiredales. org.uk/horse-riding

Pedal power From family-friendly valley bottom trails to the challenging 210 km (130 mile) Yorkshire Dales Cycle Way, there is a huge range of routes for road cyclists. A network of minor roads and mountain bike-friendly byways, bridleways and ‘green lanes’ cross the area. And any effort to climb a hill is always rewarded with a fabulous view! Our dedicated website www.cyclethedales.org.uk will tell you more, however you like to pedal.

Going underground One of the very special features of the Yorkshire Dales is its limestone scenery above and below ground. There are three show caves for a first trip underground White Scar, Ingleborough and Stump Cross Caverns - and if you are keen to see more you can team up with a guide on a true subterranean adventure. Wensleydale Wensleydale has a long history of dairying, so it’s no wonder that it’s home to the Wenseydale Creamery, Hawes, source of the world famous Wensleydale Cheese which you can nibble in all its varieties in the tasting room. Also in Hawes is family-run local business Raydale Preserves - which offers the chance to tour the premises and try their range of jams, chutneys and sauces - while Humble Pie Cookery Kitchen champions quality local meats and dairy as part of its brand new courses. Further along the dale at Thornton Rust, the Harrison farming family - who were the first farmer to introduce Jersey cows to the dale - have diversified into creating delicious Wensleydale Ice Cream. They opened their new parlour this year in a restored barn which you can visit. If you feel some exercise is in order after sampling these delights, visit Stage 1 Cycles - based at the Dales Countryside Museum - for bike hire and advice on the

best places to go. Or jump on the Little White Bus to Snaizeholme Red Squirrel Trail and see these native creatures making a comeback in their natural habitat. If you want to try something a bit different, visit Semerwater Alpaca Ambles, and take the animals for a gentle stroll through this spectacular landscape with views of the largest natural lake in the Dales. Meanwhile for the big kid in everyone there are hidden passages and riddles to be solved at the mysterious The Forbidden Corner. Wensleydale has spectacular waterfalls, including the three-stepped Aysgarth Falls, Hardraw Force - the highest single-drop waterfall in England (pictured right), and Cauldron Force at West Burton made famous by the artist J M W Turner. Jervaulx Abbey, located in a beautiful, wooded setting by the River Ure, has an ‘honesty box’ to help towards its upkeep. The Edwardian Rock Garden in Aysgarth, commissioned by local landowner Frank Sayer-Graham (1859-1946), has such a fascinating story that it is now Grade II listed.

The lovely village of Askrigg offers a wonderful selection of pubs and a delicious new deli, The Bake-Well.

Dog Friendly at Swinton Bivouac, Yorkshire’s premier glamping experience situated within the 20,000 acre Swinton Estate and surrounded by stunning countryside. With various cycling and walking routes, a Café Bistro, family activities, birds of prey and the Druids Temple, it’s the perfect place to visit! Teeswater Year: Farm, Fleece, Fashion

Reflections on Landscape

Nidderdale-based photographer Melissa Peakman documented Teeswater sheep and their breeders over 12 months in fields, barns and show rings. Her often gritty images contrast with Yvonne Le Mare’s beautifully crafted, colourful feltwork, which transforms humble fleece into sophisticated stylish textiles.

A joint show by artists Beverley and Peter Hicks. Beverley reflects the stunning landscape of Malhamdale through her characteristic use of hieroglyphic mark making, while Peter discovers its visual secrets, working with the basic forces of his subject, its moods, light, rhythms and atmosphere. 10 July to 09 November

The View from the Fells: in the footsteps of Marie Hartley Artist Hester Cox printed 127 wood engraving blocks created by and bequeathed to the museum by historian, artist and Museum founder Marie Hartley. She then spent a year researching Marie’s life and work, visiting the places written about in three of Marie’s books:

Passing through Barbara Murray and Paco Valera divide their time between the Yorkshire Dales and Spain and are inspired by the woodlands on both doorsteps. Their collection of prose-infused monochrome tree portraits is a powerful combination of poetry and photography. Their work encourages people to give time to the ‘passing through’ moments of reflection offered by woodlands: “Without trees, we cease to exist.”

Say cheese!

Dish of the Day Don’t miss out on a real local institution. Ramsay’s mobile fish and chip van has been part of the fabric of village life for the past 38 years. Larger than life characters, by the time they retired Dick and Pauline were serving the third generation of some families.

Think Yorkshire Dales with its lush valley dairy meadows, and you definitely think of one thing - cheese. Today’s burgeoning local cheese scene is thanks in part to the Cistercian monks who brought their fromage-making skills over from Normandy. They settled at abbeys such as Jervaulx and Fountains back in the 11th century and started making Wensleydale - later to become the muchloved nibble of Wallace and Gromit. Now, the iconic Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese has been joined by a range of Dales delights such as Stonebeck, Swaledale, Ribblesdale, Thornby Moor, Richard III, Lacey’s, Yorkshire Blue and Fine Fettle. And this has spawned a whole side industry with preserves, chutneys, gins, beers and accessories all being created within the National Park.

The Home Farmer Back in the early 1960s, Wensleydale had its own mobile milk-vending machine. Now, local farmers Ben, Adam and Sam Spence have re-introduced one to the dale - and taken things up a notch - in the form of a specially adapted horsebox. Serving farm fresh milk daily to eager customers, they have also developed their own raw milk cheese, Old Roan. So if you’re staying in the area, why not grab some free-range milk from the Spences’ herd of happy cows for your breakfast (with the cream on top,

Specialist shop The Courtyard Dairy, near Settle, includes a cheese museum. Owners Andy and Kathy Swinscoe champion independent farmhouse cheese-makers, many of whom still make by hand with unpasteurised milk from their own herds in order to get the best depth of flavour. Each cheese is then aged to perfection in the Dairy’s maturing cheese room. And then there is the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes with its famous tasting room and visitor centre. On Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September, it will once again host the opening weekend of the now annual Yorkshire Dales Cheese Festival in the National Park, with butter and cheese making demonstrations, pairing workshops, and over 30 local producers of cheese, bread, chocolate and much more displaying their wares in the marquee. Get ready to sample the Dales on a plate…

With new owners, but a dedication to the tradition and importance of such a service in rural areas, the van continues to add to its weekly rounds, getting to know regulars and visitors, and adding new local products, such as deep-fried Real Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese. Visit www.ramsaysfishandchips.co.uk to find out times and routes.

And to wash it down? Long the home of great beer, Yorkshire has ale-lovers covered. Local to the National Park are Wensleydale Brewery in Leyburn, Yorkshire Dales Brewery in Askrigg and Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery. If artisan gin is your thing, you’re in for a treat with locally-made tipples from Yorkshire Dales Distillery, Masons and Whitakers, to name just a few. In 2018, Taplin & Mageean opened the very first gin distillery in Wensleydale beside a steam train parked at Leyburn station platform.

naturally) - it might even stir up some childhood memories. Follow ‘The Home Farmer’ on Facebook to find out where the Home Farm Dairy Barn will be setting up next.

With so much mouthwatering, quality produce on offer in the Dales, from meat from grass-fed livestock to hand-churned dairy ice cream, we can’t cover it all here. Head to the Eat Drink Shop section of our website at www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/ eat-drink-shop to satisfy your cravings.

For the last 15 years, peregrine falcons - the world’s fastest animal - have chosen to nest and raise their young at Malham Cove.

Malhamdale With some of the best known natural wonders in the National Park, it’s not hard to see why Malhamdale has inspired artists, filmmakers and poets over the centuries. A short walk along good paths from Malham village - with its busy National Park Centre, pubs and cafés - is the soaring limestone ‘amphitheatre’ of Malham Cove.

A free viewing point set up by the RSPB has allowed visitors to study the antics of these fascinating birds through high powered telescopes as they stoop for their prey. This year the viewpoint will be open on long weekends from April to July until the birds Exploring the gorge of Gordale Scar fly the nest. You might also catch a glimpse of the other wildlife - like little owls and new skill. Further down the valley you can woodpeckers - that also call learn about the art of butchery and charcuterie Malham Cove home. with Chris Wildman at Town End Farm Shop, and stock up on some great local produce.

The top is reached by 400 stone steps climbing up the Cove’s left hand side - count them! A stunning lunar landscape of limestone pavement awaits made up of clints (blocks) and grikes (fissures). For the makers of Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 it was the perfect choice for a location shoot.

Visit www.malhamdale.com for further information.

Our Climate is in Crisis

Above the Cove lies the highest natural lake in England. Tranquil Malham Tarn alongside the ‘sooty’ marks on the Cove face - is said to have inspired Charles Kingsley who wrote The Water Babies while staying nearby. Take the boardwalk through the nature reserve and you may just spot one of the rare water voles that were released here as part of a reintroduction programme in 2017. The dramatic gorge of Gordale Scar - part of the Malham Landscape Trail that takes in all the key sites - is hemmed in by high cliffs. A waterfall emerges through a hole in the rock at its deepest point. Walking through woodland pungent with wild garlic in spring, you also pass Janet’s Foss, a gladed woodland waterfall and pool. Janet, the Queen of the Faeries, is said to live in the cave behind the falls.
