Director’s Message

Director’s Message Summertime at Hillsboro Parks & Recreation, conjures images of kids playing in water fountains, softball games, summer camps, Thursday evenings at Showtime at Shute or a cool stroll under the Douglas Fir canopy at Noble Woods Park. This year you can enjoy all your old favorites and a few new ones too. A lighted 7,000 square foot plaza at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex is scheduled for completion in May. Located between the existing shelter and the Ron Tonkin Field concourse, the plaza is being built through the generosity of the Hillsboro Hops. This open space will be used by the Hops during their season and will be available for rental for private events. A very different plaza is also under construction. Orenco Station Plaza is an urban park providomg a vibrant, flexible gathering place for the community. Key amenities include a water feature, decorative lighting, moveable site furniture, public art and an elevated boardwalk with seating under two mature oak trees. Programs will take place in this space throughout the year including OrenKoFest on October 10, a winter village and small scale concerts in 2015. Join us at 4 pm on August 22 for the Grand Opening celebration! Around the corner from Orenco Station Plaza is Cornell Creek Park, a new 4-acre neighborhood park on the southwest corner of Cornell and NW 231st. This unique space provides amenities for park users of all ages. Features include walking trails, a nature play area, a bocce ball court, an outdoor ping-pong table and an off-leash dog area. These active areas are balanced by an open lawn, a riparian zone and plantings buffering the adjacent streets and development. The park will provide some green space for those living in the apartments and other high density developments in the immediate neighborhood. The park is scheduled to be completed in the fall. Parks and plazas aren’t the only new things at Hillsboro Parks & Recreation. On Sunday, June 28 we are hosting SHARC Fest, a family triathlon and water safety expo. The triathlon consists of a 100 yard swim, 1.86 mile bike ride and a half-mile run. Register your family for this event and start training now! The free water safety expo follows the triathlon and is open to the public. Youth 10 – 17 years have three new computer summer camps to choose from in July – Animation, Video Game Design and Web Design. These high tech camps are staggered so that budding programmers can participate in one camp or all three. In the Animation camp, students utilize Adobe Flash to create fun interactive animations. The Video Game Design camp is the perfect opportunity to get the game controller out of your teen’s hand and let them produce their own games to share. During the Web Design camp, students build a web site from start to finish and have free hosting of that site for one year. As you plan your summer, consider a new experience with Hillsboro Parks & Recreation. And, as always, if you have any questions or suggestions as to how we can better serve you, please send them our way. Have a terrific summer!

Register anytime! Online: www.hillsboro-oregon.gov/ParksRec

Located in the heart of Downtown Hillsboro, the Glenn and Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center is built on a site with a rich history of community involvement that began when Trinity Lutheran Church began construction of the building in 1947. Members of the parish pitched in and labored together to construct the frame of the building, donating both their goods and talents to create the church which would later become the Walters Cultural Arts Center in 2004. The Walters is a ground-breaking facility that provides expanded opportunities for youth and adult art education and training, community access to excellent regional and national artists and speakers, and increased opportunities for local arts organizations, and professional and emerging artists. It is the first site constructed in Hillsboro with the intention of showcasing cultural events and providing community-centered education in the arts. The establishment of the Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center and its programming has enabled the City of Hillsboro to expand and enrich the services available to its residents and the surrounding community.

Culture & Creativity Come Together:

The Walters is home to diverse range of cultural offerings through our Concert Series, Gallery Season, and Tuesday Happenings. Our arts education programming includes camps and classes for students all ages in ceramics, painting, drawing, theatre, music, animation, and more. The Walters is a proud showplace for the arts and a vibrant representation of Hillsboro’s commitment to culture and the arts. Creativity, culture and community—your cultural arts center has it all!

Celebrate Your Special Event:

With its classic red-stone architecture, stained glass features, custom woodwork ceiling arches, concert-quality sound system, and fine art gallery, the Walters is one of the west side’s most treasured sites for weddings, parties and other special events. Whether you’d like an intimate family reception for 40 guests in our fine art gallery, an extravagant party for 200 in the theatre, or an outdoor reception on the lawn, the Walters provides a variety of amenable and affordable options for your special event. For more information about events, classes and rentals at the Walters, go to www.hillsboro-oregon.gov/Walters.

Conversation Project: The Power of Play with Jonathan Blasher & Tara Doherty

June 16 | 7 pm “Grow up and stop playing.” Most of us have heard this admonishment in some form as we move from youth to adulthood. But is it good advice? In our age of inactivity and frequent screen time, what are our kids learning from us about how to be healthy adults? Research shows that play and physical activity can have positive effects on children’s health, well-being and education; they also boost health and creativity in adults. This conversation, led by play activists Jonathan Blasher and Tara Doherty, visits the concept of play among children and adults and explores the value of play. Note: this session includes interactive play for all ages and abilities. Arrive early for a seat! This program is made possible by the generous support of Oregon Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Oregon Cultural Trust.

THE NEW NATURALISTS Kelly Guthrie & Bryce Willem

Upstairs Gallery April 7 – May 25 The New Naturalists features work by two local artists who are looking at the natural world in fascinating ways. Each of these collections also evokes larger questions about the relations between artistic medium and subject and the connections we share to the flora and fauna around us.

My Bug Collection: Ink Drawings by Kelly Guthrie Through painstaking pointillism, Kelly Guthrie captures the tiny textures of insect life: from the fuzz of a bee to the vulnerable underside of a grasshopper. Guthrie’s drawings act as microscopic lenses, while her enlargements of the originals shine a light on the artistic process itself and allow viewers to celebrate the medium as well as the tiny subjects to whom her work pays homage.

Binarium: Digital Images by Bryce Willem

Mediating between phytomorphology (botanical form), human control and delimitative glitch, the work in Binarium is manually composed through choreographed performances with a flatbed scanner. Willem stages hauntingly beautiful images of plant specimens as they are caught between physical and digital spaces and asks us to contemplate the complex relationship between nature, technology and ourselves. First Tuesday Reception: May 5: 5 – 6:30 pm Featuring live music by John Knowles (Sinatra to Cash Duo)

68

Universal Truths Kathleen Cosgrove

Upstairs Gallery June 2 – July 22 Kathleen Cosgrove explores how archetypal symbols and patterns in art have been shared across the globe from early civilizations to the present. Early art from different cultures focused on many of the same themes, such as access to an afterlife, fertility, prosperity, renewal, food and other resources for survival. This exhibit shines a light on how art operates as a universal language across time and cultural divides and serves as a reminder that that we are not so different from each other, after all. Here, our shared concerns and revelations—and our unity as a species—are revealed in the timeless symbols of art. First Tuesday Receptions: June 2: 5 – 6:30 pm fFaturing live music by Austin Randle (Solo Acoustic Singer-Songwriter) July 7: 5 – 6:30 pm Featuring live music by Sky Bound Blue (Acoustic Americana Duo)

Jim Matthew

Upstairs Gallery August 4 – September 28 The work of Jim Matthew resonates with the subliminal drama and layered complexities of inner life: here, recognizable figures and images emerge from a cacophony of abstract elements, making a liquid dance between the chaos of experience and the ordering power of the conscious mind. Matthew’s work reveals a sometimes disorienting world shaped by composites of past and present, memory, sound, color and ceaseless sensation. Each painting mirrors the method by which Matthew creates his art, taking intuitive paths to narrate singular moments of being. Through his work, viewers enter into the fluid currents and territories of experience that surge always just beneath the surface. The City purchased the filbert orchard in 1999 and undertook a master planning process for the park. A group of children came to the meeting and asked that a skate facility be included in the plan. Former mayor Shirley Huffman remarked that some of their parents had made the same request some 25 years before, and this time the request was honored. When the park opened, it was for skateboards and skates alone, but eventually the rules were amended to allow bicycles. Benches and bleachers were added later through donations from the Paul Grillo Memorial to accommodate resting skaters and spectators The park’s aesthetic fountain is not intended for recreational use.

Reedville Creek Park is a 9.6 acre park named for the creek that runs along its southern edge. The popular park is used by individuals and groups for athletics and other activities. The softball field is the home of the Hillsboro Girls Softball League during summer months and the Hillsboro Soccer Club during the fall. Brown Middle School PE classes may often be found on the tennis courts, and the skate park and basketball courts are frequently in use, even in poor weather.
