Manager’s Note

Cristina Caravaca | Cultural Arts Program Manager City of Hillsboro | Parks and Recreation Department | Cultural Arts Division What does ART mean to HILLSBORO? The City of Hillsboro has an active history of supporting the arts as a way to enhance livability. In fact, the City’s guiding document, the Hillsboro 2020 Vision and Action Plan, calls for over a dozen initiatives in the cultural arts sector alone. Highest on that list are the creation of a cultural arts center, an arts council and a public art program. Within the pages of the new HillsboroARTS Magazine, you will see the dreams of 2020 becoming reality through creative programs, events, classes, concerts, gallery exhibitions, community grants and public art works. Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center The Walters opened on March 16, 2004. Located at the corner of SE 5th Avenue and Main Street, this site has a rich history of community involvement that began when the Trinity Lutheran Church started construction of the church building in 1947. The Walters is a ground-breaking facility that provides expanded opportunities for the entire Hillsboro community, including: youth and adult art education and training, increased access to local, regional and national artists and increased opportunity for individual artists to teach and demonstrate their craft. It is the first site constructed in Hillsboro with the intention of showcasing cultural events and providing community-centered arts education. Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council The HACC mission is to promote and support the growth of arts and culture as assets for a vital, prosperous and livable community. The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC) first convened in the spring of 2007. This citizen advisory committee is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council. Under the general direction of the City Council, the HACC oversees policies and programs pertaining to arts and culture for the City. It is housed in the Parks and Recreation Department and is administered by the Cultural Arts Program Manager. Hillsboro Public Art Program Public art is a powerful tool for meeting the goals of Hillsboro’s community plans. Memorable public places strengthen our community. Often referred to as “third places,” they are the places that are neither home nor work. These social spaces attract us to downtown, enliven our neighborhoods, enhance our experiences in parks, inform us about the history and peoples of our place and celebrate our ethnic and cultural diversity.

Introducing Carter Girl Meet Carlene Carter

A bit of backstory:

“This may be the best record this Carter girl has ever made” – Boston Globe

cross legged on the floor in the college and grandma walked on stage. Before she even touched the guitar or the autoharp they gave her a standing ovation. It was amazing to see the respect she had so earned… that is a great night I will always remember.

Born into one of the most beloved families in country music, Carlene Carter has had a prolific recording career since the 1970’s and traveled the world sharing her talents with audiences of all ages. Her latest album Carter Girl, released this year, is already receiving rave reviews. On Friday, November 7, she will perform at the Walters in support of the album Rolling Stone calls a “fresh take on a variety of classics from the family catalog”.

GR: Having had such a successful music career spanning multiple decades, what advice would you give to aspiring songwriters?

In this exclusive interview with Walters staff member Gayle Ritt, Carlene shares her thoughts on what inspires her music and live performances—then and now.

And keep your publishing rights!

GR: What is one of your most memorable performances?

CC: That’s one of the nicest things: to play, live, and have my sweetheart beside me, too! I grew up and watched mom and John (Johnny Cash) together all of the time making music, and they were together so much. Joe and I have spent the past 10 years as thick as thieves and we fall deeper in love each day.

CC: I can go back early here. We went out as the Carter Family and we were performing in West Virginia, opening for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. It was then I truly realized the historic impact that grandmother (Maybelle) had on music. There were 5000 kids sitting

4

CC: I can say that songwriting is the beginning of everything. If you can write or sing a beautiful song and touch people with that....Songwriting is a spiritual thing... For me, it’s not out of my tricky little brain, but a soulful experience. GR: Your husband Joe is on tour with you; what is that like to be able to perform together?

The daughter of June Carter Cash and Carl Smith, granddaughter of Maybelle Carter, and stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, Carlene Carter has created an album that features classic songs from three generations. Special appearances on the album include Vince Gill, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. Carter, who says it’s been a lifelong goal to complete this project, is a proud torch-bearer for the family legacy that gave rise to the “big bang” of the country music genre. In a recent review, Glen Herbert says, “what Carlene does on Carter Girl is significant. She doesn’t approach these old songs as sacred relics to be enshrined with pious respect. Rather, she treats them like living, vital pieces of art that can withstand being taken apart, thought about and re-imagined.”

“If there’s a better hardcore country record in 2014 than Carlene Carter’s Carter Girl, I haven’t heard it.” – Huffington Post

Don’t miss this opportunity to see Carlene Carter live on the Walters Stage, Friday, November 7th at 7:30 pm

Walters Instructor Spotlight

Meet Bonnie Burbidge “Life is extraordinary—but you have to be listening.” For Bonnie Burbidge, long-time painting and drawing instructor at the Walters, teaching and art begin with the senses. “The body doesn’t lie,” says Burbidge, who approaches the creative process as an educator and professional artist with a focus on careful listening and attentiveness to her surroundings. Whether it’s observing a scene in nature, or paying attention to students in the Bonnie Burbidge at play in her Home Studio classroom, for Burbidge it’s all about nurturing the conditions for inspiration. “I’m not one of those teachers who sits in the back and paints. I’m watching. I’m listening.”

Watercolor Painting by Bonnie Burbidge

It’s the quiet, personal growth of her students that Burbidge finds so rewarding and electric. “You can see their eyes light up, or you can see them struggling silently with something.” In class, Burbidge stays keenly aware of the energies and dynamics at play in the room. She encourages students to help one another, to form relationships of mutual support, and mutual awe. “My students at the Senior Center are really good at that,” she says. “They help each other. They fill each other’s water. They talk to each other. They are so supportive of one another.” Burbidge herself is an example of how an arts education experience can dramatically impact the course of a person’s life. After 35 years as a yoga instructor and set on a career path in counseling, she discovered her latent painting talents later in life—the result of timely nudging from an artist friend. Within six months of picking up a brush for the first time she had her own show. “Art inspires art,” she says. “You see how universal struggle is, and how each person has their own way. Paintings don’t just pop out. Artists go through phases of growth and then they’re stagnant for a while . . . it’s a cycle of ups and downs. Sometimes you just need to dump some color over water and watch the colors move—that’s how things start. It’s healing. It’s fun.”

“Sometimes you just need to dump some color over water and watch the colors move—that’s how things start.”

In her home studio, not far from downtown Hillsboro, Burbidge has created an oasis of color and creativity. “All lessons start in the studio,” she says. Her studio is bright and decorated with pieces reflecting those things that inspire her: birds, local landscapes, abstract odes to color and form. Outside, a thriving garden blooms with color. The environment perfectly reflects the personality of its dweller, a principle that Burbidge applies to her teaching philosophy. “More important than anything is the student’s voice. All of my exercises are designed to draw out the student’s personality. The point is to go deeply into themselves and bring out what is unique to them.” Register online anytime: www.hillsboro-oregon.gov/Walters

Bird Child Travels Through History Shute Park Library Mural by Angelina Marino-Heidel Sunlight streams through the tree trunks, flooding the newly renovated Shute Park Branch Library with the filtered light of a forest. Bright colors and a tumble of mythical images draw your eye to a vibrant new mural by Angelina Marino-Heidel created specifically for the children’s reading area. Bird Child Travels Through History depicts a child in feathered cape on a journey through time and space. Pine needles, echoing the forest outside and the leaf patterns in the library

windows, create a backdrop for images from petroglyphs, cave paintings, mythology and dance from around the world. Astute observers will find She Who Watches, a beloved Native American image that is incised into the stone of the Columbia Gorge. Marino’s mural can be appreciated on many levels. The images from different cultures are a treasure hunt for research; the colors and patterns excite the imagination, and the child’s launch into flight is emotionally uplifting. Marino was a particularly fitting choice for the library because she illustrates books, often collaborating with poets. Her latest, Everyone Out Here Knows: A Big Foot Tale, features text by longtime Oregon Poet Laureate William Stafford, and was published in conjunction with Stafford’s centennial commemoration. With a vivacious and exuberant spirit, Angelina Marino-Heidel brings vivid colors and expressive designs to her work in paint, glass fused to copper, pastels, sculpture and murals that can be seen in Beaverton, Astoria and many

neighborhoods of Portland. Marino designs the pieces in her home studio, and then paints the panels outdoors in her Portland garden. Her husband Joel Heidel, a sculptor and painter, is her frequent collaborator and kindly, supportive presence. Hillary Ostlund, Shute Park Branch Librarian, is thrilled with the addition of the mural to the new library. “The bird child depicted in Angelina’s mural is like a reading child experiencing the library: a place where imagination takes flight into the wonderful world of reading, exploration, and creativity! We love that you can experience the mural up close and find all the little pieces that complete the whole picture, but also feel the colors, warmth, and vibrancy from the other side of the library while browsing for reading material. The mural has added such liveliness to the library and we look forward to talking with patrons about their impressions over the years to come.”

Donation Honors a Career Dedicated to Libraries When the renovated Shute Park Branch Library reopened in March, 2014, retired librarian Donna Selle was there to celebrate yet another achievement of Library Director Mike Smith. Smith began his career as librarian in Forest Grove and helped plan the move to its current site. He managed the creation of an integrated library computer network connecting all the public libraries in Washington County. In 1997, he joined the Hillsboro Public Library and was instrumental in the planning and purchasing of the main library facility, the recent opening of the second floor of the library, and in the extensive renovation of the Shute Park Branch Library. Donna Selle was the first Washington County Cooperative Library Services manager, and Mike Smith’s supervisor. At the library dedication, she spotted the blank wall in the new children’s area and was inspired to donate artwork that would honor Smith’s contribution to libraries. Mike Smith was happy to take a break from his recent retirement to rejoin his colleagues for the dedication of the mural in his honor. “I found the mural especially moving. The theme I pick up is the progression of a character, from crawling to flight, from ignorance to knowledge. For me, that is experience of literacy and the purpose of the Library. It is a great honor to have my name associated with this work and with the Shute Park Library.”

Right Brain Initiative Inspires Hillsboro Students and Teachers Last year, 5th and 6th graders at Jackson Elementary in Hillsboro learned to create biographies in an engaging manner using digital media. Teaching artists Michelle Swinehart and Katie Basile from The Right Brain Initiative taught them to do oral interviews with school staff , such as the school nurse or a favorite teacher. The students then filmed additional shots from interesting angles, to edit together their own documentary film. The students learned interview skills, videography skills, and editing, as well as teamwork and collaboration skills. With employers increasingly looking for people who can devise creative solutions while school art programs have faced years of cuts, Right Brain is one part of the solution to fill the gap. The Right Brain Initiative is a K – 8 grade arts education program that integrates arts experiences into the students’ core –curriculum through hands on lessons for the students from professional teaching artists, as well Photos by Rick Paulson Photography

as providing professional development in arts integration to teachers. Right Brain places professional artists in schools to work with teachers to develop creative approaches to teaching the core curriculum. Instead of simply teaching art, the artists use dance to teach math, collage to teach science, videography to teach literary arts, and print making to teach history. The Right Brain Initiative began in 2008 and has grown quickly, serving over 13,000 students last year. Now in 7 Hillsboro Schools, the goal is for Right Brain to someday reach every K – 8 student in the metropolitan area. For now, with limited funding, the emphasis is on expanding to Title 1 schools first, in order to serve the children most in need of arts education opportunities. According to Superintendent of Hillsboro School District Mike Scott, “The Right Brain Initiative has been an excellent partner for the Hillsboro

School District—allowing us to provide a sustainable, high-quality program that infuses the arts into core curriculum for thousands of our students.” At W.L. Henry Elementary School, a Title 1 School in Hillsboro, students in the 5th grade embarked on a Right Brain project to learn about the Declaration of Independence, colonization, and cultural perspective through print making. Classroom teachers Shelley Panayiotou and Benjamin Fong had their students contemplate the cultural climate of this period of history and through an essay explore whether or not the Declaration of Independence‘s famous proclamation that “All men are created equal” would have applied to them in the skin they are in. In a school with a Hispanic population of 81 percent, the students’ perspectives were moving and thought-provoking. The children then worked with Right Brain artist, Caitlin Shelman to use printmaking to create self portraits. Shelman

combined excerpts from their essays with their finished self-portraits and bordered them all with the Declaration of Independence in Spanish and English to create a stunning permanent installation in the school library. Marna Stalcup of Right Brain Initiative says, “Right Brain helps teachers and artists work together to identify powerful curricular connections between the arts and other subjects. Arts integration engages children in a creative process that ultimately transforms learning.” To learn more about the Right Brain Initiative, visit TheRightBrainInitative.org.

All Things Audience Development Paul Stavish Wednesday, November 19 | 4 – 6 pm | $25 | Course # 44890 For arts organizations and individual artists alike, this workshop will guide you through the process of creating strategies aimed at building an audience for your art. We will uncover ways to identify your prospective audience, and then develop strategies to invite and engage them. We’ll also look at the tools you have at your disposal in tandem with the current technological marketing space, and how to utilize them so that you’re getting the most return for your effort. Paul Stavish is an arts marketer who has worked with two of the major arts organizations in the Portland Metropolitan area. At Oregon Ballet Theatre, Paul held the title of Audience and Business Development Manager, raising promotion and group sale revenues by 40% in one season, and helping the organization achieve their 2012-2013 earned revenue goal in just six months. At Portland Center Stage, Paul works in a newly formed Patron Services department, whose core goal is to drive revenue while simultaneously increasing patron loyalty.

The theatre, gallery, classrooms and outdoor locations provide a variety of amenable and affordable options, whether you have 20 or 200 guests. Located in the heart of Hillsboro’s historic downtown, this former church is a bustling nexus of cultural activity. Our facility is open Monday through Friday, with private rentals available on Saturday & Sunday. The Walters is centrally located with easy access to Portland, Washington County wine country, and the Oregon Coast. Our experienced and friendly staff will be happy to answer your questions and assist you through our rental process. Whether you’re planning for your wedding day, preparing for an upcoming business luncheon, or hosting a nonprofit fundraiser, your cultural arts center is the perfect venue for your special event!
