Director’s Message

Director’s Message Hillsboro Parks & Recreation firmly believes that parks, recreation and culture enrich the lives of our residents and visitors. Getting kids outdoors to connect with nature is increasingly recognized as an essential component of healthy childhood development. Participation in nature, recreation, arts and cultural programs at any age supports good health, encourages creativity, and allows our residents to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle. Our beautiful Oregon autumns, combined with the multitude of different activities available in our Fall Activities Guide, enable you to do just that. Here are just a few ideas for you: • Come take a nature walk and do some bird watching at Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve. • Bring the kids to try any of our playgrounds or enjoy one of our water fountains. • Expand your creativity in an art class at the Walters Cultural Arts Center. • Go for a swim or join in a workout class at the Shute Park Aquatic & Recreation Center. • Participate in a recreational or holiday-themed special event. • Volunteer to plant trees or help with various youth and Arts Center programs. Hillsboro Parks & Recreation after school programs will kick off soon at most of the Hillsboro elementary schools and all of the middle schools. We offer these vital homework help, sports and enrichment programs with the help of various partners and sponsors, including the Hillsboro School District, Hillsboro Schools Foundation, Washington County Commission on Children & Families, and Tuality Healthcare. We are always looking for volunteers and community sponsors to help us serve even more children, so please let us know if you’d like to help. Thank you to our wonderful Hillsboro community for enabling us to make a positive impact on the livability of our great town. We couldn’t do it without all of you!

September 7 – 29, 2010 Main Gallery Artists: Featuring Anne Greenwood, Helen Hiebert, Diane Jacobs, and Shu-Ju Wang.

The installation “For the Love of Food” had its genesis in a conversation between Anne Greenwood, Helen Hiebert, Diane Jacobs, and Shu-Ju Wang, a group of Portland artists who have been meeting monthly for the past five years. Greenwood’s concerns about the decline in the nutritional value of the foods we consume prompted the group to investigate the various issues surrounding food in our modern cultures. Canned food donations for the Oregon Food Bank are welcome all month.

Mitch Baird, Aimee Erikson and Unconditionally Us: A Reflection Dante Cohen, Jessica Burke, Katie Jamee Linton Allen, Larry Cwik, Lauren Henkin and October 5 – 27, 2010

October’s featured artists’ work will be on display throughout our facility. Mitch Baird celebrates life and the beauty that surrounds us in his representational painting. He is devoted to the traditions of the late 19th century artists who looked to the figure and nature’s landscape for inspiration regarding light, color, and design. His artistic desire is to “portray a positive visual statement and hope the viewer will experience what I see and in some sense be inspired, uplifted, or moved by my painting, whether it is of a small intimate setting or a grandiose subject.” Aimee Erickson began teaching at the Multnomah Arts Center in 2005. Her paintings reflect a lifetime of observation – light, shadow, subtle color transitions – in a style that is representational and painterly, seeking beauty and the essence of things. Favorite artists include Sorolla, John Singer Sargent, Burt Silverman, and Gregory Manchess (“and a lot of other illustrators!”) “Landscape painting is a vehicle through which I study life and nature. Using a combination of memory, emotion, and reference, I translate the landscape into scenes that focus on color, balance, and composition. This translation establishes a conversation between the real and the ideal and is inspired by the appreciation of beauty, emotional intensity, and nature as a manifestation of the sublime.” – Jamee Linton

Dennis Worrel. November 2 – 30, 2010

For the exhibit “Unconditionally Us,” curator Carl Annala chose artists whose work is reflective of themselves, their relationships and society. While all the art is beautiful, many of the perspectives are not apologetic or idealized. Rather than romanticizing, they express honesty, aggression, frustration, loss and empathy with subtle doses of humor.

First Tuesday Opening Reception

Tuesday, November 2, 2010 6:00 – 8:00 pm Exhibit opening reception honoring all November artists. Enjoy refreshments from Claeys Catering and a concert in our lobby.

Elements: Multiple Parts/ Singular Art

December 7, 2010 – January 26, 2011

Also on display will be sculptures by WCAC student Hailey Bourassa, age 11, in the lower exhibition area. Hailey has been a student at the Arts Center for three years and we are proud of her great work.

Contemporary art that employs the use of many pieces to create the whole is the theme of this show. Mosaic, fiber, ceramic, paper and wood are a few examples of the types of media visitors will see. Abstract or representational artwork that blurs the line between function and fine art will be of special interest in this international juried exhibit. Curated by Lynn Adamo with Arthur DeBow and Carl Annala.

During the 15 month span that has come to be known as the Salem Witch Trials, more than 150 people were imprisoned and 19 people were hanged after being convicted of witchcraft. Many others died while in prison or during ‘questioning.’ In the centuries since the trials ended, people have debated their real cause. Were the Salem Witch Trials caused by mass hysteria? Was it a conspiracy by two powerful families to destroy their political enemies? Or was it something as odd as food poisoning? Historian and author Jeff Davis traveled to Salem, sometimes walking in the footsteps of the judges and accused to try to find out why. Come and see what he found.

12.5 acre park Natural area Off street parking Play equipment Tennis courts (2) Trail and boardwalk Youth softball field Youth soccer field .63 mile pedestrian walkways

Located northeast of Henry Elementary School and south of Maple Street, 12.5 acre Turner Creek Park is a lovely setting featuring open grassy and wooded areas, wetlands, sports fields, tennis courts and a children’s playground. The natural area on the west side of the park offers paved and wood chip trails leading to a boardwalk and bridge across Turner Creek. These trails run down a small canyon that separates the improved portions of the park from the creek and provides a connection to the elementary school. About four acres of the park are along the meandering creek, which creates ponds and islands and healthy habitat for a variety of wildlife including Great Blue Herons. The park was developed and opened in 1990. Since then, with financial assistance from a Metro Greenspaces grant, volunteers, community groups and Parks & Recreation maintenance staff have restored the woodland area with a new trail, boardwalk, native plantings, a wildflower garden and birdhouses. Brookwood Baptist Church Student Ministries is the adopter of Turner Creek Park. Register Online Anytime: www.ci.hillsboro.or.us/ParksRec

2. Experience Java Rock Café – this free monthly music event is held the first and third

Fridays each month from October through May at Insomnia Coffee Company and features performances from local high school musicians and bands.

3. Get the kids hooked on running – we are offering four youth cross country meets this fall (9/28, 10/5, 10/12, 10/19), and a Youth Turkey Trot Fun Run on November 23rd at Hare Field – all are free and are great ways to introduce the kids to the fun of running.

4. Tour the Walters Cultural Arts Center – come take a tour of our art exhibits Monday

through Saturday, or attend a “First Tuesday” Art Exhibit Opening Reception (first Tuesday of every month @ 6 pm), a monthly Open Poetry Reading (second Tuesday of every month @ 7 pm) or Spoken Word events (third Tuesday of every month @ 7 pm).

5. Bring your dog to play at Hondo Dog Park – Hillsboro’s dog park is located at 4499 NW 229th Avenue and offers three different play areas.

6. Play some tennis – there are 15 public tennis courts in Hillsboro’s parks, including 53rd Avenue Park, Rood Bridge Park, Turner Creek Park, Reedville Creek Park, Magnolia Park, and the Fairgrounds Sports Complex.

is a wonder of nature, with both outdoor and indoor exhibits including interpretive signs and displays identifying native plants and wildlife. A $2 donation is requested for ages 10 and over for the indoor education center, which is also home to the only “authentic” bald eagle nest exhibit in the continental United States.
