SparkAmplify Intelligent Media Outreach

Category | User Interface Design, User Experience Design Material | Digital Designer | Hillary yap Duration | 4 months

SparkAmplify is a Digital PR Saas Platform helping clients maximise their media exposure. My role as a UIUX Designer at SparkAmplify was to continually ideate, prototype, test and seek out insights for existing and upcoming features in the platform.

BETA

Overview The initial goal was to enhance the Onboard process for new users on SparkAmplify’s web-based platform, to increase the pick-up rates of this service. However, further research shows that the flow amongst individual features was the cause of leakpoints. In this case study, i’ll showcase my UX workflow on finding the problematic areas and how they are resolved.

Highlights: · Mapping out wireflow to examine platform userflow · Observation & User interviews to collect platform insights · Team communication to implement changes for the better · Solution explained

Background study:

The PR industry VS SparkAmplify’s story A PR executive role is to fulfill the journalist’s requirement for news while enhancing the client’s image in the public eye. Ultimately, generating positive media coverage for their clients. A typical PR’s Job includes: - Spending a lot of time cultivating and building relationships with journalists and other members of the mass media - Drafting eye-catching press releases, and sending it to targeted members of the media (aka outreach) - Finding the hook that makes a dull story interesting - Preparing Press kits for media follow-ups - Arranging interviews and responding to press requests Chien, the founder of SparkAmplify realized how expensive and frustrating the repetitive process of building relations with the media was without a PR. Thus he set out to revolutionise the PR industry by digitalizing the work process of gaining a press coverage.

Project brief:

This wireflow is a combination of wireframe and flowchart, documenting the workflow and screen designs when there are few pages that change dynamically.

There’s a problem, Users weren’t using it The features sounded perfect to the team, but the platform usage by users showed otherwise. I analyzed and observed our backend administrative dashboard that SparkAmplify was experiencing usage drops and incompletion in various task flows. This is not a good sign as a bad user experience could be costly for a startup. To begin understanding what our users are thinking and feeling, I began user research on our whole platform process beginning from the onboarding process.

Purpose of Task 1: Complete basic info in Profile

For interested Journalists to have a deeper understanding of the brands.

Hypothesis I felt that the original tutorial tasks did not fully communicate how the platform could be & should be used, plus the red dot wasn’t intuitive enough, making it seem like it appears randomly. I needed to know what others felt, and wanted to know how they would navigate through the platform to leverage on SparkAmplify’s features. Thus, I begin looking for users to conduct observation & interviews.

Collecting insights from interviewees SparkAmplify is a startup company with no stable client base and little UX resources. I had to make use of what i have in reach; my team mates and peers from other companies on the same floor became my user research participants. I begin designing my test scenarios and executed my tests using hallway testings and internal google survey tests to quickly understand some of the common problems on the platform. Apart from that, i scouted our SQL database and reached out to our locally based (Taiwan) users to invite them for my interviews.

Visualization of my findings:

Made use of colors to organize the results for a quick visualization of good & bad comments as well as to identify the most problematic areas.

Tasks that failed most will be considered as “urgent” issues to change for the next sprint.

Each task was designed with a goal in mind. The success rate of each goal depends on whether the testers managed to fully execute each stated Goal.

Designing the interview tasks Apart from testing the onboard process, i designed my interviews tasks as a whole platform with the ultimate goal of understand our 4main features in mind thus it covered [Outreach] & [Dashboard]. The motive behind each task & question was to understand: - how users navigate through the platform (action observation) - what are their concerns - which feature was most important to them - their level of understanding of each feature

Observations & Key statements: Profile page

“The amount of fields i need to feed to my page..is tiring me out.” “Is this profile for SparkAmplify or who is going to look at my profile?” Observation analysis:

80% of the interviewees managed to follow the red dot and completed what was required in the profile. However, they went on to continue scrolling through the page, briefly taking a look without answering the fields, then proceeded to Connect page straight away. Profile page was left empty.

Profile page

Connect page

“There is no red dot, is this a bug?”

Observation analysis:

Every interviewee got lost and looked around for clues on what to do next. Intuitively, they would open the tutorial’s drop down to check, but feedback that it did not give them any clear hints on where to find the right media.

Connect page

“I think i am supposed to click this (+) thing but where does it go?” “Will i send notifications to these journalists after i click (+)?” Observation analysis:

60% of the interviewees could intuitively tell that they need to click the plus button, but it took them awhile (3-5~secs) of switching between [Connect] & [Outreach] for them to understand that the (+)button is used to add their preferred journalist to their [Outreach list]

Outreach page

Outreach page - 5Qns

“Why do i have to keep repeating my company infos?” Observation analysis:

Interviewees shared that the listed questions in were easy to understand & fill in. However, they hesitated when choosing templates because they didn’t want whatever that they’ve typed earlier to be wiped out.

Outreach page - Mail editor

“I basically did not look at the grey section because it was too alien” Observation analysis:

Testers checked their email contents, and clicked preview right away. No one took notice of the [Merge tags] nor [References] provided. Most feedback on a lack of [back] button, because they wanted edit their answers.

Insights conclusion:

ONBOARD (Process)

Time consuming and confusing when the red dot couldn’t be found. Users understood how to navigate each platform features but didn’t understand the value behind each feature.

PROFILE

Users do not have the patience to complete Profile page due to the overwhelming number of empty blanks. They feel pressured and time-consuming having to think from scratch.

CONNECT

(+) button is not intuitive enough. Users could not see the connection between [Connect] & [Outreach] page especially for first time users.

OUTREACH (Questions)

Users understood and appreciated SparkAmplify’s email generation feature but was pretty confused by the 3rd, 4th and 5th Question. They were irritated when their answers were erased after changing template (Last question)

OUTREACH (Editor)

The editor page wasn’t what users were expecting from existing products. With too many confusing information provided, it confuses users when they needed to confirm their email.

Gaining clarification together, as a Team Apart from getting through with the compulsory tutorial at the beginning, Platform testers & Users are trying to figure out how to navigate through the platform and understand what SparkAmplify can do for them.Through researching into the Onboard process, it was revealed that pages such as [Connect] & [Outreach] was a page break that many users had to switch inbetween unnecessarily.

Making changes that matter After organizing my findings, i would share them with our team’s UI Designer. We then began to work on the relevant solutions. SparkAmplify run by biweekly sprints therefore it was important to identify and plan out what was essential to change for each sprint so that we maximise our time and efforts. When each of the elements are confirmed and finalized with Chien, the design team would then hold meetings with the dev team to communicate the tasks that needs improvements. We use Planning poker to gauge the story points, enabling time for clarification and concensus within the team.

Gaining clarification together, as a Team Apart from the essential bi-weekly meetings with the Dev team prior to each Sprint, i try to gather the entire SparkAmplify Team on a quarterly basis to communicate our current user’s behaviors. The sharing helps SparkAmplify’s Front-end & Back-end Develeopers as well as Data engineers, members who rarely face users first-hand understand what SparkAmplify users are facing and feeling. This also gives them space to generate ideas when doing their own scope of work.

Sharing persona maps with the Team:

The goal of sharing UX information on my side is simple. I help to clarify the Team’s doubt by letting them know who are our users are, why do they need these features, and the frequent challenges they face when using our platform.

Final outcome with results

ONBOARD (Process) Drop-offs decreased greatly by 85% after the change was made.

BackUP Design for healthcare

REDEFINING

Category | Product Design, Medical Back brace Material | SLA Designer | Hillary yap Duration | 8 months

BackUP is a newly designed posture correctional back brace that focuses on treating bad postures by correcting the Flexion and Extension positioning of the spine.

THE PROBLEM

By providing support, stabilisation, proper alignment adjustment and positional correction to the spine throughout its healing process, Orthopaedic braces are often prescribed to patients during their rehabilitation course towards recovery. However, modern practical orthopaedic supports are generally tailored-fit to each individual. It takes minimally a week to custom-make a single brace from scratch, as established specialist outlines the required dimensions before starting to bend and forge metal rods. Therefore, due to its ‘tailor-fit’ nature, current orthopedic braces are not only costly and have a long lead time, they are also too rigid to be comfortable. Manufacturability issues aside, users have also criticised current orthopaedic braces in terms of its aesthetic, comfort and durability. What’s more, recent studies has shown that Osteoporosis, a bone deteoriating diseases that causes your bones to weaken and appear deformed are happening faster in younger women because of unnutritional diets and inappropriate work hours.

“Bracing is necessary at this point of time because of the post surgery procedure. However it can be really warm and uncomfortable after a long period of time plus it is not very asethetically pleasing!” Male / 42 / Trainer

INSIGHTS

“I suffered a back injury from slipping and falling, whats worst is that the pain runs from my lower back to my shoulders so it affects my arms, meaning i cannot exert too much strength so i always acquire help from a family member to help me with the brace support. I do not like to trouble others but it is necessary.”

Through understanding existing users and their experiences, i justify that this topic; BackBrace, Back Support/aid can be improved. Thus i started brainstorming, ideating on how i can introduce new functions, to giving Backbracing a new touch so that it can benefit more users.

FIRST GENERATION

conclusion: Initial idea was to create a spinal brace that could incorporate rehabilitation strength exercising function to boost patient’s recovery as well as adding a secondary usage for a backbrace. However through thorough investigations interviews and, and medical advices from medical practitioners/ physiatrists; adjustments to its functions and supports has to be made.

BackUP

BackUP is a easy to wear posture correction brace suitable for patients with poor spinal postures , minor scoliosis, pusher syndrome or stroke patients who is undergoing balance rehabilitation.Poor posture places stress on our spine, which may lead to anatomical changes in the longrun, bringing pain and discomfort to your daily lives. Wear Backup on a day to day basis as a reminder or during rehabilitation to prevent incidents caused by a loss of postural balance.

BackUP’s key design is derived from observing the basics of Human’s spine ergonomics.

Concept BackUP includes a uniquely designed hinge located on the backplate of the brace, acting as an angle measuring device for tuning to different angles for different stages of treatment. These mechanical joints are strategically positioned in areas that avoids direct bodily contact for maximum comfort. In addition, instead of pulling velcros for fastening, users now can effortlessly adjust the tightness of this brace simply by pressing down and turning the knobs.

Injured

How does it work? Backbracing is usually needed as supports for sore, injured backs. Physiatrists can now control and adjust patient’s posture with BackUP’s new adjustment function according to the different needs of different patients. For example, Patients with compression fracture suffers from painful backaches caused when their spinal bones collapse. Patients will feel better when they maintain a straighter posture thus physiatrist would tune backUP’s extension angle (upper plate). Lumbar spine

Category | Product Design, Exercise kit Material | variation Designer | Hillary yap Duration | 3 months

Engaging and portable respiratory muscle training system for stroke patients.

THE PROBLEM

The average human life span is increasing bit by bit as technology advances everyday. Yet this also means that hospitals rely heavily on machines to sustain lives. The reliance on breathing machines are costly not only monetary wise but the cost of natural resources as well. Thus, to alleviate this problem, it is best that patients who would be staying in the hospital for a long period of time, could quickly get back on breathing themselves.

A senior citizen patient who is staying in the hosiptal long term is asked to lift water bottles (Light weight excercise) to strengthen muscles such as biceps and improve respiratory system. This would promote cognitive recovery as well as physical wellness.

Identifying

LOOKING WELL

It started out with observing people within age group has different life approach towards dressing. I got curious as to why some elderlies dress more fashionable then others. Does that mean they are more expressive? Does dressing well reflect their wellness?

LIVING WELL

Research & Analysis / Interview

I often hear people say, “I am in my 50s or 60s or that they have retired and I don’t need to wear these traditional clothes.” In fact, we will never be younger than today, and since we have worked hard for most of our lives, give yourself a good reward. Everyone should try to have a set of their own exclusive high-order uniforms, even a good uniform, and leave them to their children or daughterin-law as heirlooms. It is also full of emotionally deep meaning. Every age group has their intellectual beauty and figure beauty.

The next level of identifying the design is to do research to back up my findings.Through researching from online materials to interviewing real life persons to understand and engage myself into their world, i broadened my insights. Dressing well as we age does not only suggest the wearer tohave a more positive outlook on life, dressing up and engaging themselves onto social media promotes a more youthful spirit. This is a rather key insight as the world is facing aging populations everywhere else. Thus apart from living well physically, it is important to live fulfilling mentally too.

Greatest takeaway: Understanding the Personas ; using empathy

TO THOROUGHLY UNDERSTAND THEM 銀髮族 Middle-aged? Senior citizens? Who are they? Age at this significant era has been rather debatable as technology has helped many senior citizens become young at heart; thats if as long as they don’t stop learning. This not only affects their mental and physical health, their well-being also concerns their loved ones as well. Thus, to thoroughly understand this specific age group, so that i can truly empathize with what they go thru in their “silver” years, i wrote in to New Taipei City Association of Retired Persons and met up with a group of people ranging from young seniors (50-65) to real seniors (65-85). During this meet up/workshop session, i wanted to pursue a few things, to understand; Their interests, daily problems, goals and concerns. We sat in a circle and discussed light-heartedly and through this sharing session we identified common interests and problems. The next step is to ideate and map out a series of ideas onto sketches on paper . This allows participants to understand how design thinking can help make lives better because their thoughts matters.

A futuristic concept of gifting

INSPIRED BY

The act of gifting flowers.Whether it is a carefully chosen bouquet of flowers or just a stem, it is sure to convey a warm feeling to the recipient. Its not only because Flowers are exquisitely beautiful and their fragrance is exhilarating, its also because they carry the freshness of nature and the world outside with them. The main reason for the popularity of flowers as gifts though is their ability to bring good cheer and convey the right message with their Language and Meanings. Flowers appeal to all our senses and brighten up our lives and our hearts.

DEATH OF A GIFT

OBSERVING

It is beautiful, wonderful and it is romantic to receive flowers, however, what happens upon receiving them? The majority of flowers begin to wilt 3-5 days after being cut from their stems. 2+ weeks at most for the longer lasting cut flowers, and recipients would prepare to toss them in the waste. What if the gifted flowers doesnt have to die? Or what if i can begin growing the flowers i receive? Thus i began ideating on the notion of prolonging the life of a gifted flower.

Digitalizing the process of real life flower types into Microchips

Your surroundings affects it’s growth status. DIGIPLANT

Inspired by the rituals of gifting flowers as a congratulative to occasion, Digiplant is set out to revolutionize the current situa then witnessing them wilt. Infused with the excitement of you responsibility and possibility of making your seedlings bloom

Modelling process

I have always enjoyed creating/ modelling by hand, but it requires planning before execution. This is a Freshly 3D printed model after cadding it out in Rhino. The surface of the model requires sanding and putty to even out the folds.

After the first layer of putty. Patience is key at this stage because i have to calculate the drying time and then repeat the steps of sanding it down and then mending dents again over and over until it is near perfection.

Almost ready for spray painting. I sanded off the first layer of paint because the irregularities of this form makes it harder for the paints to go on within the holes. which is why it is important to always start with the inner surface first.

Final outcome of Digiplant. To mimic the holographic effect during presentation, i photoshoped and printed on a transparency so that my audience could somewhat understand my product at first glance.

Style preferences ranges from vintage, magical to sophisticated. I was advised to take on something more gender-neutral.Thus I chose a more futuristic style which would probably fit into more homes in the future as well.
