The proposal aims at looking at one such neighborhood along Baixaing Street which has succumbed to the rapid growth and now consists of three important buildings which stand alone as the only remnants in the neighborhood. The design proposals stand to act as methods of revival and preservation of the current state through minor strategies which are either remnant of the past or have an essence of the past. They include ideas of imprinting the plan of buildings that were on site, allowing a tessellated, alien surface to grow and become a part of the space and allow smoother interactions in between and creating a series of windows that envelope the three buildings allowing views to form along to walk around them. Creating vital public space for the city was of prime importance.

The activity of buying and selling food and other commodities has shaped towns and cities for centuries. At the heart of this exchange stand public markets—the buildings and spaces where marketing has taken place. Increasing population and real estate values calls for developments and redevelopments in and around the city. Hence, mixed use developments are proposed in the island city to meet the requirements of growing population. Municipal markets that have recently redeveloped under these public-private model are often seen to be defunct; being mixed use development market spaces are often neglected leading to defunct market typologies and city loses vital public spaces like these marketplaces and affects a large population. Marketplaces are slowly losing its hold and are only seen as places for commerce rather than public spaces that they are meant to be. Idea is to sustain these marketplaces; to study the patterns embedded in these typologies and strives to create a space that supports and encourages local businesses and provides an atmosphere that encourages community activities and become generators of vital public spaces in the city.

The authorities attempts to relocate or remove the vendors are met by oppositions from the vendors associations. A BBC article reported that “many vendors also opposed the establishment of malls in the city, as it takes away their daily livelihood. Even if the opposition is quashed, the attempt to relocate the informal vendors has been a failure. This is because such planning fails to consider the dynamics of the market system. As per the statistics, there are more about 107 municipal markets in Mumbai; of which 90% of markets are developed within the span of 20-30years are stated as dilapidated and needs reconstruction. These markets are now given up to private entrepreneurs for redevelopment as the market now stands defunct or stays unoccupied after constructing. The cases of Mumbai’s markets are studied to understand their characteristics, the issues related to these markets, the patterns seen in these markets and the relationship it has with the community and the surroundings. Diagrams here try to compare different associations and patterns embedded in these market typologies, to attain certain understanding of these complex typologies.

Based on the site analysis and case studies of the redeveloped markets, strategies for design are made taking into considerations factors that help in the functioning not only market spaces but also the spaces that follow along it. Among the few strategies mentioned, the main idea is to help develop the market in an organic pattern that it embodies.

3. Front elevation Redevelopment under this public-private model is carried out with a view of profits for both the developer as well as the vendors. Market takes maximum ground coverage for efficient functioning while the developer’s sell-able units form the vertical rising tower on the site. Strategies for the development of both the units are different as market needs a more flexible and connected approach. The site is falls under Transit oriented developments (TOD) making it viable for the market to be sustained for longer period of time.

03 Model Making
The form is derived for the studies of older market which is to be redeveloped. The three prominent structures of the site were taken into account while designing the new and interconnectivity between these structures was the idea behind the form of the market buildings. While the commercial component rises vertically, it still needs to be well connected with various parts of the site. Hence, the location and form of it is derived strategically so as to have its equal dominance over the site and it is not secluded.

I n d ividu al pr oject S t u d io A d v is or s - Apu r va S Ta s k s h a n d le d -D e s ig n , Wo r k in g d r aw in gs, D etails Usagoan is a remote village in Vrajreshwari, Maharashtra. The site is surrounded by brick kilns and a reservoir that supplies reservoir to the surrounding areas. Site is situated near the reservoir and at the very end of the village where the only interaction of the villagers was in the form of recreational activities. Project so proposed had a purpose of recreation as well as a center for the village for their growth and development. Since being a remote village it was far fetched from any kind of development. The structures built there were mainly from the local material available that is brick. In terms of development, the village has access to electricity and other elemental needs. But, lack of infrastructural development is a major setback to the village leaving it disassociated. Hence, the project aims at creating a community center where a major part concerns recreational facilities that the villagers can enjoy, which also aims at aiding their growth and development.

Individual project
1 The project is built on a topography which is highly contoured and near a water reservoir that the village acquires. Hence, the site comfortably enjoys the panoramic vistas of the bounty hat surrounds. The design thus aims at creating a series of transition spaces. Transition spaces so formed are to capture the views of the site giving rise to recreational spaces that the villagers can enjoy. Series of walls angled in a certain direction are provided with punctures so as to facilitate movement and porosity within the project. It also uses some ideas from the vernacular architecture of the village such as large open courtyards surrounding a tree, using local material such as brick and achieving spaces with heights that allow for micro climate within the spaces.

The idea of the project lies primarily on the walls that span across the contoured region creating vistas for the space with in. Structurally, minimal hindrance and large span with column-free spaces was achieved with the idea of trusses. Main objective of having panoramic views is addressed making the structure light.

Design in this project talks more about the upside-down approach to the market place, since the shops form the major part of the program; Where movement is governed by the shops of the market, here shops are governed by the movement that shall be facilitated for better functioning of the site. Since the project has programs with diverse nature it is essential that movement is so categorized so as to avoid any conflicts between the paths of the people also addressing other concerns as making the Gurudwara a prominent structure on the site which was not the case earlier, facilitating cross programing which is much needed for such project.

With the city of Bangkok there lies a small precinct locally known as little India. Most of the residents there are of Indian origin settled there for work, education or leisure. India emporium is typically a mall that sells Indian goods in bangkok with goods managed and sold exclusively by Indians. With the growing community of Indians been settled there, a Gurudwara was established by the locals there which not only is a place of worship for the Indians residing there but is also an teaching center for the fellow non-Indians there. The site functions as multi-cultural platform in itself allowing various cultures to exist and grow. Typically the Gurudwara offers teaching aids, carries Langars on everyday basis, provides recreational facilities and a space for worship. The site adjoining the Gurudwara is hence taken up to enhance and support this kind of multi-cultural platform.

An Indian Restaurant located in a near California, USA. The brief for the restaurant was to design a restaurant that is typically Indian and reflects a few design principles as that of a typical diner in remote areas of South India, particularly. The layout of the restaurant was kept minimalistic and the Indianness was uplifted with the decor and furniture.
