can’t begin to express how much I love spring here in the Lowcountry.

Our azaleas and daffodils are in bloom, the grass is turning green and the Heritage is here.

You’ve made a great choice deciding to spend your vacation here in this wonderful place we are lucky to call home.

Much like a proud parent is quick to point out a PUBLISHER child’s accomplishments, LORI GOODRIDGE-CRIBB we are eager to tell you lori@hiltonheadmonthly.com about all the wonderful things Hilton Head Island, Bluffton and the surrounding area have to offer.

We hope this guide will be used as a tool for getting the most out of your time here.

Unlike many tourist destinations, the Lowcountry isn’t littered with flashing neon signs. While the sign and lighting standards help protect the area’s natural beauty, it also makes finding things difficult for visitors. Virtually everything is hidden behind a tree or two.

With this guide and a GPS, you should be good to go.

First, you will notice a map of the region with many “hot spots” listed by address. These are popular beaches, parks, marinas and other landmarks.

That is followed by our spring directory,

with contact information for businesses that cater to visitors (kayak rentals, dolphin tours, bike rentals, etc.).

We thought to ourselves, what would we want to know if it was our first time visiting? We have included that information.

We also wanted to make it useful for visitors that already know their way around. For those people, we have included a calendar of the biggest events happening through April with a tide chart for each month (we live by the tides here).

Of course our biggest event of the year is happening April 11-17 at Harbour Town Golf Links.

After the tournament is gone, we still have plenty of great things to do here in the spring.

Inside, you will find information on our most popular activities — going to the beach, golf, tennis, biking, boating, fishing, shopping, eating out and much more.

We also touch on the local culture, the laid-back lifestyle and why you should never leave.

You will soon notice the pace of life is much slower here. So break out your flip flips, take a deep breath and soak in the beauty that surrounds you.

D

eveloped in 1956 by Charles Fraser, Hilton Head has come a long way from its mere 300-person population in the early 1950s. Today, the island’s year round population is about 39,000. At only 12 miles long and 4 miles wide, this tiny island has much to offer for vacationers.

Here on Hilton Head, we may move slower, but that’s just island time. Friendly locals and beautiful scenery make for the perfect seaside getaway with countless activities. With many beaches, world-class golf courses and tennis courts, endless restaurants, shopping and so much more, we can guarantee you’ll never be bored.

Here you can choose from a lazy day spent on the beach or an adventurous day out on the water doing water sports. As for the beaches, they’re all public and equally stunning. Each one of the beaches offers a different feel. For example, Coligny Beach

offers food and shopping in a fun, beachy environment while Burkes Beach is a more low key environment.

But, if you are looking for something in between there’s still a beach for you. If you still want to enjoy the salty ocean water, but looking for a more active day, there’s countless water sports to partake in. B

luffton began as a Native American enclave where tribes could fish and collect oysters, then trade them along the May River. Later, it became a retreat for wealthy cotton, indigo and rice plantation owners who enjoyed the river breezes from the town’s bluff. Thus its name, Bluffton.

That life revolving around gentle breezes continues today, earning the town the designation of “one of the last true Southern coastal villages.”

Bluffton didn’t change much for decades, not until interest in Hilton Head flowed over the bridges onto the mainland — a little at first, then Bluffton’s population surged with the construction of Sun City Hilton Head, now home to 14,000 people.

Geographically, Bluffton mushroomed through vigorous annexation, going from 1 square mile to 53 square miles in the 1990s. Within that perimeter, development exploded, creating a critical mass of young families that have given Bluffton its own flavor.

Town planners grouped development, so residential areas remain nice and peaceful. Shopping centers are clustered along U.S. 278, several schools and athletic fields ring McCracken Circle and a dining and entertainment district keeps the Calhoun Street Promenade hopping.

Yet still central to the town’s ambiance is Old Town, which is Bluffton’s original square mile. It’s sprinkled with artisan shops, art galleries and one-of-kind eateries.

Now a National Historic District, Old Town includes the pre-Civil War Church of the Cross and the antebellum Heyward House, which serves as Bluffton’s visitor center.

Not only is Bluffton a great coastal village, a couple of attractions keep Bluffton on many “best of” or “most interesting town” lists. One is the iconic Bluffton Oyster Co., one of the last operating oyster factories on the Eastern Coast.

Another landmark is Palmetto Bluff, a coveted community that boasts the five-star Inn at Palmetto Bluff and protected wilderness overlooking the May River.

Despite its vastly expanded dimensions, Bluffton remains a small town. Because the warm weather makes outdoor activities possible year-round, the town’s parks host a plethora of festivals, events and public gatherings in every season. Bluffton offers an ideal blend for its residents: small town feel with the shopping, dining and entertainment found in much more cosmopolitan areas. But if you really want to know what makes Bluffton unique, head to the May River. After all, Bluffton’s elevated view of that waterway gave it its name, and the town remains true to its watery roots. 

A bit off the beaten path from the plantations and resorts, Folly Field has more of a locals’ beach feel. With a shorter walk to the beach than nearby Driessen Beach, it is both convenient and quiet. Take a long walk and grab a pit stop and a drink at the outdoor bar at the nearby The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa, or spread out your towel and spend the day at one of the island’s wider and uncluttered beaches. Loved by surfers and body boarders, it still can occasionally be treacherous with its riptides and undertows.

From its heel to its toe, here’s an overview of some of the island’s popular beaches and hidden gems. 

MITCHELVILLE BEACH (3)

Many locals consider this beach Hilton Head’s best-kept secret. If you’re looking to build sandcastles on a pristine beach, pick another spot. If you’re looking for privacy and beauty in a rich historical setting, this beach is for you. Be sure to check out the incredible story of Mitchelville in the nearby park.

FISH HAUL CREEK BEACH (2) DOLPHIN HEAD (1)

Located on the northern tip of Hilton Head in Hilton Head Plantation, Dolphin Head beach overlooks Port Royal Sound and includes a mile-long walking path and a quiet two-mile swath of beach only open to HHP residents dotted with vestigial live oaks and pines. Hilton Head Plantation is one of the island’s largest year-round residential communities, and Dolphin Head is more private than some of the island’s other beaches.

The area is known for its diverse ecology, maritime forest, salt marsh and creeks, beach dunes and scrub, and the Port Royal tidal fl ats. The beach itself is a generous walk from the park, but ambles through a wonderful nature path, and is lightly used for swimming. The beach park, located on the “heel” of the island, is 31 acres of mostly untouched nature, feels like your own private beach and is arguably the scene for the best bird watching in all of Hilton Head.

ISLANDER'S BEACH (4)

A favorite of locals, Islander’s Beach recently earned a high ranking in Coastal Living magazine’s Top 21 Beaches on the East Coast. It’s less crowded than most Hilton Head spots and swimmer-friendly, thanks to its gentle underwater slope. Parking is at a premium and is mostly reserved for residents and year-round pass holders, with metered spots available for guests. For nearby mid-island visitors, a bike ride or a friendly beachfront drop-off might be the best bet for easy access.

A long boardwalk connects the maritime forest to the white-sand beach. A long, wide shoreline leaves ample room to spread out, and the flat ocean floor and small waves make it kid-friendly and great for body boarding or just wading. Tucked in a heavily shaded and wooded area, it’s a bit hard to find, but with tons of amenities like parking and restrooms, it’s popular with both locals and discerning visitors alike.

BURKES BEACH (7)

Located to the northern side of Chaplin Community Park, Burke’s Beach is adjacent to Singleton Beach, divided by the natural folly field. The beach offers seasonal lifeguards and limited parking, but boasts some of the best waves for surfing and boarding. The dog park at Chaplin Park is a nice touch and makes it a great destination for a bark-andbeach day with man’s best friend.

NORTH FOREST BEACH (8)

Located near over 100 dining and shopping options in one of the island’s oldest neighborhoods, it is one of the places to be on Hilton Head. For surfers, the beach area at Jacana Street is known to offer some of the best waves at high tide on the island. Locals swear by the shoreline as the best on Hilton Head, and the quaint mix of older beach cottages with modern ocean compounds makes for a compelling community feel.

BEST FOR: Swimming, walking and surfing ACCESS: The one-mile stretch of beach starts at Coligny Circle and runs north to the Sonesta Resort located in Shipyard Plantation

COLIGNY BEACH (9)

SOUTH FOREST BEACH (10)

Part of Hilton Head’s “Ocean Community,” South Forest Beach is on a one-mile stretch of beachfront between the Coligny Circle and Sea Pines Plantation gate. It is the largest of the island’s public beaches, and draws more crowds than North Forest Beach. Wide, comfortable and spacious, and buffered somewhat from nearby development, it’s a great all-purpose spot. Venture a little further path the public access point that divides the north and south beaches, and you’ll find even more room to spread out.

SOUTH BEACH (11)

Located in Sea Pines at the “toe” of the island near the South Beach Marina. Though the marina area is one of the more popular island destinations for visitors, with its dining, shopping and inventive water sports experiences, the Calibogue Beach itself is relatively quiet, nearly secluded, and is great for just watching the dolphins or a relaxing walk. Don’t go out at high tide, though, as there is little to no beach at that time. If you are not a Sea Pines resident or registered guest, you must pay $6 per vehicle to enter the resort.

BEST FOR: Unique water sports opportunities (kayaking, sport fishing, parasailing, etc.), sightseeing and walking ACCESS: Near Sea Pines South Beach Marina, best accessed by bike or foot

At Hilton Head’s busiest beach you’ll find soft sand and wonderful clean water.

Even better, it’s close to the island’s unofficial downtown area. The beach is protected by security cameras and visitors can enjoy free Wi-Fi, volleyball nets and scores of beach rentals and free parking — just not at the popular Coligny Plaza. The beach and the shopping plaza do get a little crowded, but if you like an active and lively beach experience, this is your spot.

BEST FOR: If the crowds are any indication, everybody. Perfect for sunbathing, swimming, biking, an early-morning jog or a romantic date night. ACCESS: At Coligny Circle, at the intersection of Pope Avenue and South Forest Beach Drive

CANNONBALL JELLYFISH

Also known as the cabbage head, this is the most common jellyfish encountered in our waters. It is the least venomous native jelly and stings are very mild. You will often see it washed up on the beach.

hat's that? It's a question visiting mothers and fathers are asked constantly by inquisitive children during family beach days. Don't lose cool points by answering, "that's a bird, son."

Impress your little one with a name and a quick fact about the critter in question. Here is a look at the 10 most common animals you will see at the beach. 

GULL SEA STAR

They’re often called starfish, but they're not actually fish. They don’t have gills, scales or fins and move using hundreds of tube feet, which are located on their underside.

These scavengers are the most common bird on the beach. They usually eat dead things that wash up on shore, steal other birds’ meals, beg tourists for food or hover around shrimp boats.

HORSESHOE CRAB

SAND DOLLAR BLUE CRAB

Greatly cherished by local seafood chefs.

Females have broad abdomens, like the dome of the Capitol. Males have narrow abdomens, like the Washington Monument.

BROWN PELICAN

These birds glide gracefully over the water until they spot a fish, then they fold their wings and clumsily smash into the water to grab their prey.

Flat sea urchin with velvet-textured spines covered with very small hairs. Coordinated movements of the spines enable sand dollars to move across the seabed. It’s illegal to remove living sand dollars from the beach.

BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN

More than 200 live here year-round, and many more are migratory. Local captains have given several of them names based on their personalities, such as Chopper and Nic.

They resemble crustaceans but are actually closely related to spiders and scorpions. They are considered living fossils, originating 450 million years ago.

LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLE GHOST CRAB

They live in holes in the sand above the high tide line and stay inside during the hottest part of the day. They emerge mostly at night to feed on clams.

You’ll find their nests on Hilton Head Island beaches between May and August, when they come ashore at night to lay their eggs.

The eggs hatch in about 60 days and the small turtles make their way to the ocean using the moon as their beacon.

mory Campbell has spent a lifetime enduring and influencing change on Hilton Head Island. He grew up Gullah at a time long before artists and tourists celebrated the culture.

Long before the days of a bridge connecting the Sea Islands to the mainland, Campbell boated to high school and became the valedictorian at Michael C. Riley High School in Bluffton. At first, the scholar was oblivious to the history of the region.

He left the Lowcountry to get an education — first a biology degree at Savannah State College, later a master’s degree in environment engineering at Tufts University in Boston. Campbell was intent on using his education to help his family — helping his parents build a house and getting his paraplegic brother medical help up north.

But while he was up north, Campbell became increasingly curious about his culture’s history, and that fed a hunger to return to the Lowcountry to help his people.

“I was learning just how important the islands and the culture were. The more I learned, the more I knew I needed to make my way back home and help,” Campbell said.

He has done more than help over the last half century.

He’s championed health care and infrastructure for the Gullah and worked to protect land from being lost to devel-

opers. In his three decades leading the Penn Center, he evolved a school started to educate freed slaves into a vital force to preserve and honor the Gullah heritage.

Campbell also served as the first chairman of the GullahGeechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission, helping to oversee the preservation of the Gullah over four states.

Today, he runs Gullah Heritage Consulting Services and leads Gullah Heritage Trail Tours on the island.

He’s evolved from a wide-eyed and ever-curious youth to a constantly active participant in his culture’s history. The spiritual leader of the Gullah preservation movement has been more reflective than ever as of late, taking part in a documentary chronicling the Gullah, “Hilton Head Island Back in the Day: Through the Eyes of the Gullah Elders.”

“What a wonderful project that has been,” he said of the film, which was released in October. “Gullah is all about storytelling, about sharing tales of working and loving the land from generation to generation. But we haven’t always been good at documenting that history, so this was so important.”

Campbell has been a doer for so long, and doers don’t spend a lot of time looking back or patting themselves on the back. But he sees progress, as the Gullah have gone from a displaced by development to blending into “progress.”

Too often, luxury is just hollow avarice, and that’s why luxury is cheap.

ilton Head has long been known as a family-friendly vacation destination, and now more than ever families are choosing to stay and play with their four-legged family members in tow.

Boasting dog-friendly beaches, an abundance of dedicated walking paths, endless outdoor activities and a variety of pet-friendly restaurants, Hilton Head’s dog-loving community might sway you to want a dog if you don’t already have one.

“Many island hotels and restaurants are rolling out the welcome mat for visitors who travel with their pets,” said Charlie Clark, vice president of communications at the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce. “These services and amenities only add to the attraction of our destination and provide another great reason for them to choose Hilton Head Island.”

Teeming with dog lovers, Hilton Head welcomes pet owners and their pups with a variety of activities and pet-friendly businesses.

There are several outdoor shopping areas where dogs are welcome, while many Hilton Head restaurants and businesses welcome dogs with water bowls and treats.

Many restaurants on the island see a steady flow of regulars who frequent their establishments because they are able to bring their dog with them. Restaurants such as Charbar Co., Holy Tequilla, Bomboras, Bistro 17 and Captain Woody’s are known for their dogfriendly atmospheres.

Hilton Head’s 12 miles of beach are dog friendly year-round with seasonal restrictions in place. Dogs are invited to enjoy the beach before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m. the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day. During shoulder seasons, leashed dogs are permitted on the beach from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 1 through the Thursday prior to Memorial Day as well as the Tuesday after Labor Day through Sept. 30.

During the off-season pups are welcome to run around, enjoy the surf and chase tennis balls leash-free as long they obey commands with positive voice control.

If your pup enjoys socializing, there is a fenced dog park at Chaplin Community Park, where both locals and visitors bring their dogs. The park is open from sunrise to sunset and includes a separate area for small and large dogs.

“The Visitor and Convention Bureau website HiltonHeadIsland. org gives visitors a list of pet-friendly properties, restaurants that allow dogs, special pet menus and details on town regulations so they can enjoy the beach together,” added Clark. “It’s a major resource for them when planning their stay.” 

BEACH SAFETY

 Protect your skin with sunscreen and reapply at least every two hours, but if you are more prone to burning or in the water a lot, reapply more often.  Drink lots of water as your body needs to stay cool in the hot sun and drink water even if you are not thirsty. Thirst is the first sign of dehydration and being in the sun especially during the hottest part of the day can cause dehydration faster.  Watch for signs of heat stroke that often comes when one is dehydrated and in the sun for extended periods of time. When sweating does not help cool the body anymore the body’s temperature rises and one may feel faint, have a rapid pulse, feel hot, skin flushed red, and more. Should this arise call 911 and move the person to a cool place, wrap them in wet sheets, towels, or place ice packs on their wrists, ankles, armpits, and neck to cool them down. Keep watch on their breathing and

do not let anything block the airway, keep them lying down out of the sun.  Just as you put sunscreen on your skin putting sunglasses on is protecting your eyes from the sun’s harsh UV rays.  Make sure to wear appropriate foot protection as many times the sand can be extremely hot and can burn your feet.

Beyond just the hot sand there is glass, shells, or sticks that can cut you as well as the occasional crab.

OCEAN SAFETY TIPS

 Never swim alone.  Learn to swim no matter how old you are as it could save your life or someone else’s.  Make sure you can always see the lifeguard and stay in designated swimming areas.  Always check the water conditions at the lifeguard post incase rip tides are high or stingrays or jellyfish are in the area. It is better to be prepared than find out the hard way.  Don’t swim against a current but swim across it.  Make sure to always have enough energy to make it back to land in any case.

FIRST AID TIPS FOR THE BEACH

 Sunburn: Soak under cool water most likely in a shower or tub. Aloe can often help heal and provide anti-inflammatory, taking Ibuprofen can help too.  Bee Sting: First and formost if allergic seek medical help immediately, if not apply baking soda paste and ice.  Jellyfish Sting: Try to remove any remaining barbs then rise with vinegar, apply dry sand, or put under hot water.  Snake bites: Use a compression dressing just above site. Seek medical help immediately and if you can remember the type of snake or at least the markings will help with treatment.  Alligators: Stay away from them as they can both run and swim very fast but if you do get bitten call 911.  Sting Ray: Rinse with water and apply heat to neutralize sting, in any case seek medical attention immediately.  Crab bites: Rise out well, clean out wound, and apply an antibiotic ointment as you can get infections from them.

Depending on severity may need stiches that would require seeking medical help.

FINAL TIP

AS ALWAYS BE SMART AND CALL 911 IF NEW SYMPTOMS ARISE OR THE SITUATION WORSENS RAPIDLY.

ince 1969 when the PGA Tour first visited Hilton Head Island, it has been hard to think of Hilton Head Island without thinking also of golf. The RBC Heritage has been a veritable who’s who of golfing immortals. Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Greg Norman, Davis Love III and many other golf luminaries have had their names etched on the champion’s trophy and received the now famous plaid jacket associated with the victory. The now world renowned Harbour Town Golf Links is open to the public and with a little advance planning you too can play the course your heroes play.

Not quite ready for the PGA Tour?

That’s fine as well with over 20 public courses on Hilton Head and immediately off Island in Bluffton, there’s a track that will fit you like a glove.

Forgot your clubs? All of the local courses offer great rental and demo programs. Don’t forget to ask for demo clubs sometimes they are the latest and greatest but beware you might shoot the round of your life and feel like taking them home with you. Winter, spring, summer or fall; Hilton Head Island golf is world class and you will have a great day on the links. 

ennis, like golf, is a year-round activity on Hilton Head Island and in Bluffton. One of the top 50 tennis destinations in the United States, the Lowcountry has the facilities and the competition to satisfy the most discriminating player. BIKING the island

hile the Island only measures about 12 miles long by 5 miles wide visitors can enjoy nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails accessible to all. In addition, there are close to 50 miles of paths behind the gates of private communities like Shipyard, Sea Pines, and Palmetto Dunes.

The fl at terrain and the bike path system make it very easy to ride on the bike paths, however many visitors fi nd the best place to pedal is on the beach. Enjoy a bike ride on the hard packed sand near the water line at low tide. It is great fun and it offers a spectacular view. You might even see some dolphins! There are miles of beautiful bike paths open to all waiting for you to explore.

RULES OF THE ROAD First and foremost, be a safe rider. Please pay attention to traffi c lights, crosswalks, and stop signs. There are small stop signs posted for bicyclists safety on the pathways, and it is never safe to cross anywhere other than at a marked crosswalk.

Please lock your bike when not in use. As previously mentioned, bike rental companies usually provide bike locks at no additional cost.

Bike paths inside gated communities, or plantations, are restricted for use by residents and guests of that community.

If you do decide to ride on the beach please do not ride in the water. The sea salt wreaks havoc on bikes and quickly damages the paint and moving parts. Please use fresh water to rinse off bikes that might have salt water on them.

VACATION TO REMEMBER Many vacationers feel that biking on Hilton Head is one of the factors that make our Island special. We hope that you will take advantage of our bike paths and bicycle vendors to make this vacation one to remember. 

1. MOST SCENIC RIDE The boardwalk at Barker Field overlooking the marsh is simply amazing. If you’re on the south end, visit the “toe” of the island on the beach looking at the entrance to South Beach Marina.

You’ll see Harbour Town in the distance, Daufuskie Island dead ahead and the Atlantic to the left.

2. BEST BEACH TO CYCLE 1 3

Start at Palmetto Dunes, hit the beach and travel south to the tip of the island at South Beach — preferably with the wind at your back. Assuming cooperation from the tides and tourists, this is as good as it gets.

3. BEST NATURE TRAIL The rice dike trail in Sea Pines to the horse stables and into the Sea Pines Forest Preserve is incredibly rich in natural beauty, and it’s often almost empty.

4. BEST FAMILY RIDE Start at Coligny Circle and take the pathway west along Pope Avenue to New Orleans Road. Then turn right along the pathway and follow Arrow Road across the William Hilton Parkway to the Palmetto Bay Marina and back; you’ll stay off the main drags and discover a lengthy hidden ribbon of trail behind the shops and restaurants. For an alternate route, turn onto the William Hilton Parkway from New Orleans Road, follow the pathways to the Shelter Cove Marina and back.

es, “water, water every where…nor any drop to drink” as Coleridge wrote 215 years ago in the “Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” but we don’t care about drinking water as long as we can always enjoy it by boating, sailing, paddleboarding, kayaking, charter boating and everything else.

For locals and tourists alike, the creeks, rivers, sounds, ocean, lagoons, ponds, salt marshes, wetlands and maritime forests with their abundant wildlife provide a bounty of outdoor adventures for everyone of all ages.

Kayaking on calm water that surrounds Hilton Head Island is not only relaxing, it can be a great adventure, too. And the best part? Kayaking is a sport for everyone.

“Ability is not a concern,” said Mike Overton, president of Outside Hilton Head, which rents kayaks and other water sports equipment. “If you can walk around the block, you can kayak. This is taking a

nature walk through the marsh.”

With the abundance of accessible inlets, rivers and lagoons in the area, kayaking is an exotic yet practical exercise. But it remains unchartered territory for many locals and tourists. For those willing to try, here are some basic expectations and recommendations.

Whether starting with a lesson or tour, or for those who prefer trying solo, the necessities are safety precautions, knowing how to enter and exit the kayak and some paddling basics.

Important safety rules include wearing a personal flotation device, keeping safe distances from larger water vessels such as boats, maintaining balance and simply staying in a comfort zone.

When entering and exiting a kayak, a safe and convenient location is a boat ramp. Place the kayak parallel to the edge of the ramp and step sideways in and out of the kayak.

Kayak paddles, unlike canoe prototypes,

have blades on both ends. Once in the water, grip the paddle with your arms slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.

Then alternate strokes from side to side, forming an imaginary figure eight.

From there, one can kayak for leisure, or turn an afternoon into vigorous exercise.

It’s much like deciding whether to walk, jog or run intervals, only on the water. The harder you paddle, the more strenuous the workout.

Depending on the location, expect to encounter marine wildlife. In this area, dolphins are aplenty and may come within feet of your kayak. Manatees, river otters and various fish reside here, too. Many local companies that rent kayaks also have guided eco-tours and dolphin tours.

Check in with a local outfitter for dolphin and nature boat cruises, fishing and sailboat charters, kayaking, kiteboarding, crabbing, parasailing, waterskiing, tubing, wakeboarding, kneeboarding, jet skiing and power boating.

WATER DIRECTORY KAYAK BROAD CREEK This seven-mile saltwater river is the heart of Hilton Head Island and is the prime place to spot water birds such as egrets, pelicans, blue herons and sandpipers.

You will often see dolphin or watermen harvesting crabs the traditional way. All three public marinas on Broad Creek offer rentals. If you bring your own kayak, a good launching point is the boat landing next to Old Oyster Factory. Be sure to keep an eye on the tide. You don’t want to get stuck on the razor-sharp oyster beds. Go against the tide on your way out and ride it back in.

SPOT A DOLPHIN In Orlando, you’ll pay $80 to watch the world’s saddest dolphins mull about their depressing enclosures. You can see them free here, frolicking in their natural habitat. More than 200 live here full-time and many more are migratory.

A good place to spot them is on the island’s southern tip, where Calibogue Sound meets the Atlantic Ocean. You can get even closer by renting a boat or booking a nature tour for around $25 an hour.

RENT A BOAT If you didn’t bring a boat, you can rent one by the hour or by the day. Rentals of all sizes are available all year, allowing you to explore our numerous waterways at your own pace. Visit Daufuskie Island or find the infamous May River sandbar (aka Redneck Riviera), where folks from all walks of life gather to party. The sandbar appears once a day on receding tides and can only be reached by boat.

LEARN TO SKIMBOARD The surfboards only come out when a storm is coming or going. Our waves may be wimpy for hanging 10, but they’re perfect for the popular and extremely dangerous sport of skimboarding. Unlike surfing, skimboarding begins on the beach by dropping the board onto the thin wash of previous waves. Skimboarders use their momentum to skim out to breaking waves, which they catch back into shore in a manner similar to surfing. The end result is usually a faceplant.

STAND-UP PADDLEBOARD Get a new perspective on Hilton Head – standing right there in the water. It requires all kinds of balance, and you may take a tumble or two into the drink, but trust us — it’s easier than you think, and you can do it.

FLY HIGH WITH A JETPACK Maybe the coolest water adventure is HHI Jetpack.

GO CRABBING ON THE CRABBER J II They laughed when I said I was going with the kids to catch some crabs. They are not laughing anymore. What we did was make reservations on the sport crabbing boat Crabber J II which departs out of Shelter Cove Harbour. Once everyone was on board, the Crabby crew untied the lines and we motored out to the calm waters of Broad Creek. Along the way we saw two dolphins playing. We anchored in the shallow water right next to the salt marsh and everyone fished for blue crabs. It was a lot of fun. The crabby crew kept score and a girl from Cincinnati won the world famous Crabber J II T-shirt cause she caught the most crabs. Please call for current prices.

lessed with natural beauty, white sandy beaches and temperate climate, Hilton Head Island has earned a reputation as one of the most family friendly vacation destinations in the United States.

At the top of many must visit lists is a climb to the summit of the iconic lighthouse in Harbourtown.

Visitors will learn about the island’s rich natural history and are rewarded for their climb with spectacular views of Harbourtown Golf Links, Harbourtown Yacht Basin and Calibogue Sound.

Active families enjoy eco-kayak or stand-up paddle boarding tours through salt marsh estuaries, where naturalists and photographers have frequent sightings of bald eagles, hawks and osprey.

Thrill seekers will enjoy a visit to ZipLine Hilton Head for an adventuresome canopy tour. Dolphin sightseeing tours, sailing trips, parasailing, waterskiing and tubing are especially popular.

A custom pirate ship is outfitted for a pirate adventure tour.

Sport fishing charters, night shark trips and a catamaran sunset cruise are also available.

A boat trip to Daufuskie Island offers a glimpse of what other sea islands were like before bridges and causeways opened them to development. Most native residents of the island are descendants of freed slaves, who have made their living oystering and fishing for decades.

Family-oriented singer, songwriter Gregg Russell can be found performing beneath the famous Liberty Tree six nights per week throughout the summer season.

At Lawton Stables a guided trail ride through the scenic Sea Pines Forest Preserve is offered. Young children will treasure a visit with Callie, the island’s pet deer.

A visit to Coligny Beach is an open invitation for people watching, where the flip-flop-tappin rhythm of steel drums and Jimmy Buffet songs sets a casual mood.

Jennifer Moscar of Atlanta, formerly of Bluffton, took photographs of chocolate ice cream mustaches on her two young children as they splashed and danced through the water spouts in the Coligny Beach Fountains.

Thousands of family’s annually enjoy Harbourfest at Shelter Cove, where Shannon Tanner has entertained audiences for the past 25 years. Live entertainment, bouncy houses, food, arts and crafts, and a Tuesday evening fireworks display are featured.

For the Freeland family of Rochester, New York, an afternoon at Islander’s Beach was an opportunity to construct an elaborate sand castle of a giant alligator, drawing admiration from a family of four on Fat Tire bicycles out for an evening ride along the shore.

Many families also enjoy championship caliber golf, tennis, cycling and miniature golf. Others relax during a game of bocce or kite flying. A children’s museum, video arcade, bowling alley and several movie theaters are also available.  WINTER/SPRING 2016 35

LAGOON FISHING Most of the lagoons on Hilton Head are brackish, meaning they are both fresh and salt water. Lagoons offer a unique fishing experience because of the variety of species you can hook. Don’t let the calm waters fool you; fish can grow to enormous sizes (red drum can weigh more than 50 pounds).

Other fish caught in the lagoons include tarpon, striped bass, black drum and the occasional blue fish. Live bait such as shrimp and finger mullet are your best bets, but they are usually hard to come by unless you catch your own or are fishing off of a private charter boat. Spinning and top water lures fished with a lightweight spin rod are another popular option. If you have a few hours to spend on the water, a charter boat will supply you with all the equipment, bait, and knowhow needed to land a monster.

SURF FISHING There are a lot of junk fish (skates, rays, small sharks) in the Carolina surf, which can be thrilling to catch, but frustrating for those in pursuit of game fish. Red drum, kingfish, and flounder are some of the more prized fish that can be caught.

Squid strips, minnows and bunker chunks are the most common types of bait used in the surf.

They can be purchased at any tackle shop along with 2- to 3-ounce sinkers to combat the rough water. Don’t feel like you have to cast halfway to the horizon to catch fish, some of the biggest can be taken right out of the breaking waves.

The best times to surf fish are early mornings and evenings, when the beach crowds have subsided and the fish are most active.

OFFSHORE FISHING If you are feeling particularly adventurous, and willing to spend a majority of the day surrounded by water, offshore fishing can provide some real thrills. Party boats generally accommodate large numbers of passengers, but private charters are also available (at a higher cost). Half and full day trips are typical. These trips generally target fish that are specific to the season, and can include marlin, tuna and cobia.

Most offer specialized shark fishing trips all year. Your vessel may travel many miles out to sea, so be sure to have your Dramamine on hand if you are prone to sea-sickness.  WINTER/SPRING 2016 37

Some lakes and lagoons hold fresh water – or brackish water: To fi sh outside of plantations or private property one must be 16 years old and have a State fi shing license. For a non-resident you can purchase a seven-day pass for $11.

Plantations: You do not need a license but must follow plantations guidelines.  Sea Pines: must be a resident or guest and need a permit from CSA, available at security offi ce.  Shipyard: must be a resident or guest but no license is needed and there are no restrictions.  Palmetto Dunes: must be a resident or guest and only allowed on the banks of the lagoon crossed by the Queen’s Folly bridge.

onsider the typical visitor, on the island for a quick getaway and often intent on chasing golf balls, surviving beach bike rambles and maybe savoring an evening libation or two listening to Jimmy Buffett cover tunes at some torch-lighted island eatery.

Cool. We can do that. And very well, thank you.

But, as so many can attest, today’s tourist often becomes tomorrow’s yearround resident, and once they get past “Margaritaville” they’ll discover local musicians playing original rock, blues and electronic dance music in venues that are off the beaten path and bear no artistic connection to Mr. B or the hormone-fueled Barmuda Triangle.

World-class musicians work nightly at the Jazz Corner, serving up swing, trad-jazz standards and rhythm & blues for more seasoned locals and visitors, but if you’re in the mood for much older classics track down the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, now in its 34th

There’s also the well-regarded Hilton Head Choral Society and the well-attended International Piano Competition that draws some of the world’s finest young players to First Presbyterian. And the Hilton Head Dance Theater further bolsters our cultural credibility.

The Heritage Golf Tournament remains our biggest tourist (and traffic) draw, but soon-arriving data will show that visitors counts for productions at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina have pushed that venue firmly into second place. “I always enjoy going to plays at the Arts Center because you get such high-quality productions performed in such an intimate setting,” said long-time island resident Isabel Mangan. Folks looking for more progressive one-act productions can turn to South Carolina Repertory where Hank Haskell and spouse seat barely 70 patrons in a tiny theater on Beach City Road. The Art League of Hilton Head, which shares space with the Arts Center,

displays all manner of paintings, jewelry and artworks on a rotating basis and there’s a growing roster of smaller galleries scattered about the island. Our museum scene is anchored by the pastoral Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn just as financing continues to grow toward creating a full-fledged Gullah Museum that truly celebrates our diverse culture.

“Years ago this was just a beach town,” said Sheri Sternitzke, chairman of the Main Street Theater that incorporates non-equity actors aged five to 82 for its annual productions. “Now we’re becoming year-round and I think a lot of people are amazed by how much we now have to offer. And there’s going to be more to come.”

No doubt this short-form essay has excluded deserving additions, but here’s a tip for a more encompassing look at island cultural offerings: The Arts and Cultural Council of Hilton Head operates a website/calendar about upcoming events in almost every category. 

Coligny Plaza (One North Forest Beach Drive): The south end of the island is the heart of the vacation area. The very first shopping center on the island and a perennial favorite is Coligny Plaza at the intersection of Pope Avenue and North Forest Beach. Considered Hilton Head’s “downtown” there are more than 60 stores, 15 restaurants and a unique movie theatre that shows mostly independent films. Candy, T-shirts, and great apparel are there along with groceries, restaurants and a hardware store.

THE SOUTH END (continued) Harbour Town Shops (149 Lighthouse Road): At the landmark destination of Harbour Town, the scenery is pictureperfect, the backdrop vividly stunning yet, in addition to the incredible views at every turn, Harbour Town is also an incredible shopping destination, with over 20 boutiques, galleries and gift shops. Shaded red rocking chairs along the harbour encourage you to rest and recharge, perhaps with an ice cream cone or your favorite beverage.

The Village at Wexford (1000 William Hilton Parkway): This upscale center boasts 30 retail shops, restaurants and services. Most are locally owned, small businesses.

MID-ISLAND Shelter Cove Harbour (Shelter Cove Lane): With a beautiful Mediterranean waterfront village setting, this is one of Hilton Head’s most popular spots. NORTH END Pineland Station (430 William Hilton Parkway): Located at the intersection of William Hilton Parkway and Mathews Drive, this shopping center includes restaurants, shops and other services. A duck pond in its center is popular to both locals and visitors.

Main Street Village (1500 Main Street): Each building has a different style and this very walkable area is reminiscent of Main Street in a small town. Here you can find great restaurants, handmade crafts, gift items, salon services, and more.

Berkeley Place (106 Buckwalter Parkway): This popular mixeduse development includes a movie theatre, shops, restaurants and more.

Kittie’s Crossing (25 Bluffton Road): Home to many popular national chains, including Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Payless ShoeSource.

Tanger Outlets (1270 and 1414 Fording Island Road): Because you are making your purchases directly from the manufacturer and avoiding the middleman, brand name merchandise can be purchased at up to 70 percent below retail prices.

Old Town (Calhoun and Promenade streets): Comprised of onesquare mile, Old Town Bluffton includes Calhoun Street, which runs from scenic Highway 46 to the May River, and the newly built, but looks old, Promenade. This is a fun and interesting area to shop. Calhoun Street is home to the Bluffton Farmer’s Market, where you can find beautiful produce and locally made baked goods and other treats every Thursday afternoon. 

Hudson’s Seafood House On the Docks

The restaurant with one of the best views of Port Royal Sound also takes much of its signature shrimp from the sound — one of two remaining shrimping operations on the islands uses the Hudson’s dock in exchange for the restaurant having first right of refusal on its catch. The décor is simple and old school and the boat-shaped gift shop kitschy, but the food and the views are still top notch.

This Marshland Road staple was voted one of the top 100 scenic view restaurants by Open Table. Built on the site of an early 1900s oyster cannery, the restaurant honors the history of the Broad Creek fishe man with some of the area’s finest seafood. Black Marlin

This Palmetto Bay Marina dockside favorite is one of the best spots for boat watching in the area thanks to its expansive patio. Seafood and steaks are the menu mainstays, but the Key West vibe is unmistakable. The sushi nachos and fish tacos are mouthwatering.

SEA PINES BEACH CLUB

The Westin in Port Royal Plantation, Marriott and Omni in Palmetto Dunes Plantation, Sonesta in Shipyard Plantation and the Holiday Inn Beach House by Coligny circle are examples. Prices vary by the season.

DIRECTORY A number of Hilton Head hotels have just undergone major renovations, refreshing the look and feel of the popular resorts. The Westin underwent a $30 million renovation with an improved pool, deck and fitness studio.

The Sonesta also underwent a $30 million renovation resulting in an expanded pool deck and terrace surrounding a lagoon-style pool, a shade pool as well as new cabanas, outdoor beds and umbrellas.

Other major oceanfront resorts have recently completed extensive renovations, including the Omni Hilton Head Oceanfront Hotel’s $17 million renovation adding a third pool and renovations to all 323 guest rooms.

The Beach House completed a $5 million renovation of its 202 guest rooms and public spaces. The Hilton Head Marriott Resort and Spa underwent a renovation as well. Others resorts have plans to begin renovations in the near future.

If you are looking for something a bit smaller, boutique inns located in Sea Pines at Harbour Town and South Beach in Sea Pines offer the same level of service though a bit further from the beach, offer a charm all their own. Perfect for a romantic getaway or a peaceful week away. With luxuries befitting the finest hotels, The Inn at Harbour Town offers a unique variety of first-class accommodations within The Sea Pines Resort.

Traditional chain hotel/motels are located mainly along the 278 corridor, and are outside of the plantations. Prices are lower than the full service hotels, but you will not have the same amenities as the larger resorts.

RENT A HOME Vacation home and villa rentals are available in most of the South End plantations. From ocean front homes and villas to off-the-beaten-path destinations you can decide based upon your budget and desired amenities, beach, tennis, golf, fis ing. Don’t be afraid of the larger 6-8 bedroom homes as they can be split by multiple families and the prices won’t work out as high as you might think.

Or, look for a vacation villa. Here, you can rent a fully furnished home, enjoy the extra space to spread out and the full size kitchen. If you are a tennis or golf lover, you can often rent a villa close to the course.

Several rental companies on the island specialize in helping you find the perfect vacation home, whether it is a cozy villa for one or two persons or a seven-bedroom spacious home for a family. Be sure to give them a call, they are very knowledgable to the different areas and can help you find the perfect rental.

In fact, it’s very common for families to use rental homes on Hilton Head Island as the perfect place for a family reunion where they enjoy the extra space, kitchen facilities and a personal pool.

Hilton Head rental homes can offer an oceanfront view, pet-friendly accommodations or condos and villas with golf course views. No matter your preference — hotel or rental home — there is something for everyone. 

3. CLIMATE Winter here is unpredictable. It can be 80 degrees one day and 30 degrees the next.

Compared to the road-blocking snowstorms just a few hours to the north though, we’ve got

it pretty good. Conditions greatly improve in April and stay really nice through the end of October. We also have many nice and sunny days November through March. You will have to travel south of Vero Beach to find warmer weather.

4. GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION AND ACCESSIBILITY Direct flights from SAV now include 13 major destinations: Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Memphis, Miami, NYC, Newark, Philadelphia and Washington. Within driving distance we can access three growing metropolitan areas — Atlanta, Charlotte and Jacksonville. We can escape to acres and acres of nature in the rural areas of South Carolina and the charms of the mountains of North Carolina.

We are nestled between the two most historic and architecturally beautiful cities in the south — Charleston and Savannah. With the widening of U.S. 17, access is becoming easier than ever.

The Don Ryan Center for Innovation (also referred to as Bluffton incubator) is just one example of how the region is actively trying to cultivate a spirit of entrepreneurship and make it part of what will drive the future.

SAVANNAH HOSTS 12 MILLION VISITORS A YEAR Savannah’s relatively recent surge as a major getaway destination will have a trickle-down effect for our regions as millions of people who haven fallen in love with the “Southern Charm” will be looking for a different experience and/or consider a longer vacation.

7. CULTURAL, RECREATIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL CHOICES It was only 10 years ago when our choices were very fairly limited when it came to active sports, cultural and educational choices. No longer so. 9. 10,000 BABY BOOMERS A DAY RETIRE Yes, these are the official statistics and it will continue at this pace for almost two decades (begging the question if it will bankrupt Social Security).
