Rachael Kantaris - New Beginnings
Rachael Kantaris has for some years been widely regarded for her etchings, which are strongly coloured evocations of landscape often with words mysteriously, incorporated into the image. This show also features her gloriously colourful paintings, executed in Sandra Blow’s old Porthmeor Studio and influenced both by the great Cornish colourists (Blow, Heron, Crossley) as well as looking at the incredible view from the window of the sea and beach.

“Etching is equally as important a medium to me as painting and I love it for its’ sculptural qualities and versatility to create both sumptuous, resonating colour, and subtle delicate marks. The contradiction between the craft of working with the metal, and the painterly image I aim to achieve on the paper fascinates me. The processes I use in both painting and etching influence each other. I frequently use printed areas of texture combined with layers of paint built up and then rubbed or sanded back. Conversely with etching I often try to create painterly, spontaneous brush marks using metal. Whichever medium I use I am forever exploring the language of colour and the physical affect it can have on the viewer.”

Rachael Kantaris
Rachael Kantaris, born in Australia in 1967, lives and works in St. Ives. She studied at Falmouth School of Art, and then went on to complete her B.A and M.A at Brighton University. She regularly exhibits her work both nationally and internationally, and divides her time between etching at The Porthmeor Print Workshop (formerly Peter Lanyon’s School of Painting), which she was instrumental in setting up, and painting in her studio a stone’s throw away in one of the famous Porthmeor Studios. “Until last summer I worked in studio 5 whose former occupants have been Ben Nicholson, Patrick Heron and Julius Olsson amongst others. It’s a huge and historic studio and it was amazing to be making these paintings in the same space as such inspirational artists. Since then I have moved to studio 9 (formerly used by modernist painter Sandra Blow) perched right on the beach. It is a beautiful space to work in with the sound of the sea and its’ ever moving visual impact always present. Some of that raw energy has made its’ way into the new paintings created here.”
