Rose Hilton - Maggie Matthews - Alice Mumford

This exhibition brings together five artists who are united by the fact that they use still life as a starting point for an exploration into colour and form, featuring Rose Hilton, Maggie Matthews, Alice Mumford, Teresa Pemberton and Saliann Putman. Still life has been used by artists such as Morandi, Matisse and William Scott as an ideal vehicle on which to go beyond the actual subject matter with into the sublime world of shape, pattern and colour relationships. A wonderful life enhancing show which is fascinating in the way different artists go about achieving these aims.

Rose Hilton Rose Hilton, born Tonbridge , Kent, studied at Beckenham School of Art and in 1953 won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London. On her return from a year in Rome she met the artist Roger Hilton and married in 1965 and set up home together in a house on Botallack Moor, St Just, where they lived until Roger’s early death in 1975. Rose has steadily built a reputation as a major St Ives artist. At the recent retrospective held at Tate St Ives in January-May 2008, the paintings were chosen to reflect the increasingly abstract nature of her work, though she rarely abandons figuration entirely. Though best known for her sensual nudes and lusciously coloured interiors, there were also landscapes on display, in which the leap towards abstraction is perhaps most apparent. An in-depth study on Rose Hilton by Andrew Lambirth, critic for the Spectator, was published in June 2009. Salliann Putman Studied contemporary fine art at West Surrey College of Art and Design, Farnham between 1988 and 1993 where she obtained an Honours Degree. In 1997 Salliann Putman was elected an Associate member of the Royal Watercolour Society and a Fellow in 1999. Salliann was elected a member of the New English Art Club in 1999. Her contemporary paintings are now in many public and private art collections worldwide Salliann says of her contemporary paintings: ‘Subject matter is far less important to me than the abstract quality of the painting itself. I’m preoccupied with colour, light and space and the relationship of these qualities. Although the subject matter, through light and colour may inspire me, in the end it is my emotional response to the paint itself that is all - important. Many of Salliann Putman paintings begin with a quick drawing. This is an immediate response to the subject which Salliann observes. She then develops the painting from memory with imagination playing an important part.
