• The riverside site is on the northern edge of the city center. • A road and railway line is to the south, the river to the north, and the concrete structure of the Salve Bridge to the east. • Making a tangible physical connection with the city, the building circulates and extrudes around the Salve Bridge, creates a curved riverside promenade, and forms a generous new public plaza on the south side of the site where the city grid ends.
THE BUILDING SITE WAS ONCE A THRIVING PORT AREA. • The Guggenheim’s existence began with a desire of the Basque Country government to bring more recognition to the city Bilbao and Spanish art in general. • The original site was vine storage warehouse called the Alhondiga, which was built early in the 19th century and was known for being one of first cast-concrete structures ever built in Spain. • The 28,000sq.ft. site., which ran a total block along Bilbao’s Alameda de Recalde that runs toward the Nervion river, would be converted into the museum.
• The museum serves as a shining beacon in the heart of the city on the river. • Total site area 32,500 sq.m. • Located at a bend in the Nervion river on a former industrial site. • The site has a vertical drop, so part of the building had to be build under the bridge and integrated into the urban context. • The entrance faces the city.
