Project Brief While exploring for my thesis topic I came across this new proposal of Indian Aerospace Museum coming up in Palam, New Delhi in the vicinity of Indian Air force base camp and IGI Airport which has been proposed by Ministry of Defence which is not only meant to preserve the glorious tradition of the IAF but also to create awareness in general public about India’s rich Aerospace heritage.
3
Present Scenario of Museums Now-a-days, the public would not go to a museum in the first instance to acquire knowledge or information. Instead, visitors of a museum expect to go through a unique experience. That is why museums should be able to offer an “event” in their competition with movie theatres, amusement parks and shopping malls.
Issues being faced • Unawareness • Lack of space • Lack of architectural Impression • Uninteresting • Tiresome
4
Need of solving these issues • Involvement of more number of people to gain knowledge about India’s rich Aerospace heritage.
• To make the things more attractive for them by developing their interest. • To preserve the glorious tradition of the IAF.
5
Solution Before starting solving these problems there was the need to study or research for which I did some live case studies, library study and online study.

HAL Aerospace Museum, Bangalore
• Live case studies – Indian Airforce Museum, New Delhi HAL Aerospace Museum, Bangalore Naval Aviation Museum, Goa • Library study and online study was done to clear out the basics of museum designing and standards to be adopted while designing – it’s purpose and function.

Conceptualization “FORM & FUNCTIONS BOTH PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE, ITS NOT ABOUT ONE FOLLOWING THE OTHER” 1. Critically analysing the site and it’s climate • Site Details • • •
The site is located in the heart of capital city Delhi. (Palam) It is a corner land parcel of 54 Acres along the Dwarka Road. It shares its boundaries with: • • •
RAKSHA SAMPAD BHAWAN, CONTROLLER GENERAL DEFENCE ACCOUNTS & SPORTS VIEW COMPLEX.

• Climatic Analysis •
The climate is characterized by a hot and dry season. DELHI

• Site Feasibility • • • •
Site will be converted into a landmark in the capital city of India leading to positive social effects on the surroundings. Will act as a drawcard to bring people to the heart of the city. It will provide preservative infrastructure to the India’s rich heritage. The museum will help to generate healthy revenue which will further be used to preserve our heritage more efficiently.
• Site Topography • • • • •
Majorly levelled flat Approximately 450 mm below the road level Some areas has developed trees and wild plantation due to rain Soil: The site has rocky bedding with Kohi soil at the surface Water Level: The water level on the site area is 35 - 40 metres below ground level.

3. Orientation of Museum block The museum block was oriented basically according to two main factors • •
According to the sun path so as to cut the direct sunlight and allowing maximum amount of diffused light to enter inside the building. According to the view from the approach road which was important to attract the people moving across the road.
4. Form Evolution Form of the museum block was generally derived from the ‘TRISHUL’ formation made by the 3 aircrafts (Sukhoi – 30) in the sky keeping in mind the orientation decided earlier.

5. Design Strategies • Sun cutting • Serving purpose of relaxation – providing relaxing transitions like dark to light & small to large spaces and vice – versa. • Providing resting space at regular intervals. • Giving slit opening for north light to enter the museum. • Increasing curiosity among visitors by showing them where they have to reach next. • Making a universal design i.e. User friendly • A belt of trees around the site and museum building to reduce the nose pollution coming from the surroundings. 11

CONCLUSION
So, finally concluding my thesis I would say it was not just a building being made to exhibit and store the rich heritage of Indian Air Force but the site was developed into a space where a person can get themselves involved with interest and also can gain knowledge about this rich heritage about which they were unaware. A place where they can socially and emotionally gets attached. A place where one can feel proud of their country. A place of serenity.
